SERVING THE LOCAL COMMUNITIES SINCE 1954
Providing Clothing For Women And Girls Combining their love of fashion and a desire to help others, two Chester County women - Jennifer Burke and Anne Meads - have created Two Tunics - A Giving Boutique, a nonprofit organization that provides free clothing to women and girls in need. The charity, which started in the fall of 2019, is based on a quote from Luke 3:11, which reads, “The man with two tunics should share with him who has none, and the one who has food should do the same.” Burke, president, and Meads, vice president, are both graduates of the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City and coincidentally met while attending the same church. “It was random for us to find each other,” said Burke. “We both love fashion and clothes and wanted to serve the Lord with what we know. We started looking around for places to help out and be a service.” As part of the ministry, they gather donations of clothing, shoes and accessories and distribute them in partnership with local agencies, including Chester County Women’s Services in Coatesville; the Maternal and Child Health Consortium in West Chester; YoungLives Chester County, a ministry for teen and young mothers; and Genesis Women’s Clinic, with locations in Pottstown and Phoenixville. On two separate occasions during Girl’s Night at The Parkesburg POINT Youth Center, Two Tunics hosted a pop-up shop, where the girls and their families were able to choose free clothing and accessories. Most recently, Two Tunics donated 80 prom dresses - many of them new with tags - to Anchored Ministries in Elverson. The dresses will be distributed free of charge in March to girls who attend Twin Valley High School.
ElversonHoney Brook EMS To Hold Food Drive BY FRANCINE FULTON
As part of its ongoing effort to serve the community, ElversonHoney Brook Area EMS will hold a food drive for the Honey Brook Food Pantry (HBFP) on Saturday, Feb. 26, from noon to 3 p.m. at its Elverson station, 4458 Main St., Elverson. The community is invited to donate nonperishable food items, which company members will later deliver to the pantry. Those who drop off items will also be invited to support Twin Valley Girl Scouts by purchasing Girl Scout cookies, which will be on sale during the event. Troop members will also provide assistance with the food drive. “Our organization has always prided itself on community service, be that through EMS or any other venture we find ourselves involved in,” stated Steven Jones, See Food Drive pg 2
INSIDE THIS ISSUE Community Calendar . . . .3 Jennifer Burke (left) and Anne Meads are the founders of Two Tunics - A Giving Boutique.
“On Thursdays at noon, Coatesville Bible Fellowship does a Bible study and parenting class, and women from the Coatesville CYWA (Community Youth and Women’s Alliance) go to that class,” Burke noted. “I bring a couple bins of clothing for them to choose from. The women come and have their class and they take a few items each, and then the next week I bring some more. It’s a fun thing for them to brighten up their day.” Community members who would like to donate clothing are asked to

contact Two Tunics in advance. In addition, specific needs are listed on the organization’s Facebook page. Monetary donations will be used to help fund the cost of renting a larger space to store the clothing. “We currently serve women and girls age 8 and up because of our limited space,” said Meads. “But we have and will work to fulfill needs for anyone through our donation page. We hope to grow, expand our space and continue to serve our community.” Both women, who are mothers of young children, are pleased
with how the ministry has taken off since its founding. “ We are happy with what we are doing but definitely want to do more,” said Meads. “People have been so generous (with donations), and we are so thankful,” said Burke, adding, “The Lord has been in it every step of the way.” For more information about Two Tunics - A Giving Boutique, visit www.facebook.com/Two TunicsBoutique or www.Two TunicsBoutique.org or email twotunicsboutique@gmail.com.

a member of the board of directors and operations/membership committees. “The Honey Brook Food Pantry serves a great need in our community, and being able to open our doors to assist them allows us another opportunity to serve. Plus, who doesn’t love Girl Scout cookies?” Those who are unable to donate food on Feb. 26 can arrange to have their food items picked up by volunteers. To schedule a pickup time, email membership@ ehbems.org. The company also held a food drive last March for the HBFP, collecting nearly a dozen large boxes of food and supplies that were delivered to the pantry. Members of the station’s operational leadership team were also given a tour of the facility and learned the logistics of how the food pantry serves hundreds of families each month. The HBFP is located at the Good Food Distribution Center, 5064 Horseshoe Pike, Honey Brook. Two distributions are held each month on the second Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and on the fourth Wednesday from 4 to 6:30 p.m. The pantry serves low-income residents of the Twin Valley School District (TVSD). According to its year-end report for 2021, the HBFP serves approximately 750 individuals per month, which include between 250 and 300 children and more than 150 senior citizens. HBFP volunteers also deliver food to 40 homebound families per month. For more information, visit www.honeybrookfood pantry.org, search for “Honey Brook Food Pantry” on Facebook or contact HBFP director Ken Ross at KRoss1414@aol.com. In addition to providing assistance to the food pantry,
Elverson-Honey Brook Area EMS has held Christmas toy drives to benefit local children for the past two years. During the second annual toy drive in December 2021, the company collected more than 500 toys, as well as more than 100 new and gently used coats for the Caernarvon Township Police coat drive. The toy donations were distributed to children in the TVSD by Anchored Ministries. “We are planning on doing our third annual toy drive this December,” Jones noted. representatives from the 13 colonies gathered in Philadelphia to sign the Declaration of Independence in 1776. Chester County is coordinating its activities with the statewide group America250PA. Two representatives from that organization, Marissa Gioffre and Jaclyn Victor, recently attended the commissioners’ public meeting virtually to discuss similar celebration planning across the commonwealth. In their comments, they thanked Chester County for its support. Chester County Commissioner Michelle Kichline, who represents the county on the America250PA County Advisory Committee, and who is a board member of the Chester County History Center, said the local commission will work on a parallel track, balancing county events with participation in state-wide activities. The Chester County Commissioners have taken their first step toward planning the county’s celebration of the nation’s 250th birthday in 2026. They have established the America250PA Chester County Commission. The plan is to formally appoint members to the commission in March. Representatives of all ages and from all areas of the county are invited to apply. Commission members will serve for up to three years. The county commissioners will also designate a chair and a vice chair. Further information and the application can be found at www.chesco .org/America250. Chester County Planning Commission executive director Brian O’Leary explained that planning is beginning now because it takes a long time to produce ideas and coordinate events this elaborate, particularly with a variety of partners involved. He added that the celebration will cover closer to 300 years because Chester County was active long before

We’ve been out of room for a couple of years,” said Judy Reid, executive director. “(By acquiring the building), we tripled our space.” The building had to undergo a major renovation in order to transform a retail space into a counseling center. “We went from six therapy rooms to 16 rooms,” Reid said. Each therapy room includes comfortable sofas and chairs and a variety of paintings and other artwork. Also added was a large family room for children’s therapy services. “ We wanted to avoid that clinical (feel),” Staff members at the Peacemaker Center include (from said Reid. “You don’t want it left) Scott Edwards, Patsy Green, Karen Uhler, Judy Reid See Open House pg 7

We wanted it to be hospitable.” The Peacemaker Center, founded in 2000, has grown from one therapist working from a home office to a staff of more than 25 clinicians working from seven office locations in Downingtown, Kennett Square, West Chester, Audubon, Fort Washington, King of Prussia and Douglassville. Telehealth visits are also available. In addition to Reid and general office manager Patsy Green, who has been working at the center for 22 years, staff members include Scott Edwards, director of operations, who has been working at the center for 16

years, and counselors Karen Uhler, 20 years, and Dan Rodgers, 15 years. Reid pointed out that the pandemic has changed the need for therapy across the country. “In this past year, (the Peacemaker Center) grew 50%,” she said. “Because of COVID, (more people suffer from) anxiety and depression. Kids are struggling with school. Marriages are struggling. Everyone being home made problems more obvious.” The Peacemaker Center serves individuals, couples, families and groups addressing a variety of issues, including abuse, addictions, anger, depression, domestic
violence, eating disorders, grief and suicide. “Our mission is to help people find peace with God, themselves and others. We do this regardless of the ability to pay for services,” said Reid, noting that clients pay on a sliding scale. “(2021) was a monumental year for us. We gave away - through reduced fees and scholarships - almost $1 million in services to the community.” For more information about the Peacemaker Center or to schedule an appointment, call 610-269-2661 or visit www.thepeacemaker center.org or www.facebook .com/thepeacemakercenter.

Guidance On Cooking With Kids serrated butter knife with a rounded point. This task helps to teach knife skills that kids can develop more thoroughly in the future. Children can mix and add ingredients as well. As kids get older, parents can decide the right time to let them use the stove. Children can also work with dough, particularly rolling out pie crusts and pasta or making dumplings and filling them with vegetables. Many cookware retailers sell small rolling pins that are easy for kids to handle. Parents should let children read the recipes and be in charge of portioning out ingredients. Doing so reinforces classroom lessons
about temperature, ratios, and fractions. Around age 8 or 9, children can take on jobs like opening cans, scooping batter, pounding poultry, proofing yeast, skewering kabobs, and slicing bread, according to cooking educator Julie Negrin. Negrin noted that children ages 10 to 12 can start working independently in the kitchen as long as an adult is in the home. Ultimately, children can cook without close supervision. Children also can be involved in cooking by helping to draft shopping lists and taking trips to the supermarket. Involving them in these tasks shows kids the complete process of making a meal.
