Robotics Team Holds Outreach Event At Library

FIRST Tech Program Teaches Valuable Skills

By Francine Fulton

In addition to taking part in robotics competitions, which require that team members design, build and operate a robot that completes assigned tasks, members of Kardia Robotics also enjoy sharing their enthusiasm for the activity with other youths. The team, which consists of middle and high school students who attend Kardia Learning Center, a Christian homeschool cooperative that meets in Mohnton, visited the Exeter Community Library on Feb. 13 as part of a library program, STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Mathematics) See Robotics Team pg 8

By Francine Fulton

While the members of the Kardia Robotics team have diverse personalities and bring different strengths to the FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) program, all share common priorities and qualities like problem-solving, teamwork and determination. The first competition of the season was in December, and team members began gathering long before that to design and create their robot. “One of the most intimidating and challenging parts for me is the very beginning of the season, when there is so much to be done and the robot is a prototype and the program is only a vague plan,” said team member Emily See FIRST Tech pg 7

As part of an outreach effort to promote FIRST Tech Challenge, members of Kardia Robotics visited the Exeter Community Library to show younger children how to operate robots. The event was held on Feb. 13 as part of the library’s STEAM Wednesday Nights program.

CrossNet Banquet To Feature Ruth Graham By Ann Mead Ash

According to Meredith Dahl, executive director of CrossNet Ministries in New Holland, the annual CrossNet spring banquet is much more than just a fundraiser. “It’s a wonderful opportunity for the community to come together and celebrate what God has done this past year and dream together about what we can do in the future,” said Dahl. This year’s banquet will feature Ruth Graham, daughter of the late evangelist Billy Graham. She will speak at two CrossNet events in March. The organization’s 18th banquet will be held on Tuesday, March 26, at Shady Maple Banquet Center, 129 Toddy Drive, East Earl. Doors will open at 5:15 p.m., and a buffet dinner will begin at 6:15 p.m. There is no cost to attend the banquet, but seating is limited and reservations are necessary to attend. Tips Posted For Managing Stress Stress is an issue that seems to affect everyone, especially in the workplace. Workers who take on too much work or those tasked with performing jobs beyond their abilities might be particularly affected. However, they can employ various strategies to manage their stress. Embrace planning: A 2011 survey from psychologist Robert Epstein asked more than 3,000 participants in 30 countries which stress management technique was most effective at helping them overcome their stress. Epstein discovered that participants felt planning was the most effective way to manage their stress. Planning is essentially a proactive approach to managing stress and fighting it before it even starts. Smartphone apps make it easier than ever to schedule one’s time. Utilizing such

apps or opting for the more traditional route by using a day planner can be a highly effective way to manage stress. Practice cognitive reframing: Cognitive reframing is another effective stress management technique that involves changing the way a person looks at something so his or her experience of it changes. Psychologists note that cognitive reframing is effective because the body’s stress response is triggered by perceived stress and not actual events. By reframing the way people perceive a potentially stressful event, they can change their body’s response to it. This technique is most effective when people are mindful of their thoughts, particularly those that might be negative or stress-inducing. Take breaks: A heavy workload may compel people to sit down at their desk and keep working until

quitting time. However, that approach takes both a physical and an emotional toll. Sitting for long periods of time without getting up not only increases a person’s risk for various diseases, but it also can contribute to something known as decision fatigue. Decision fatigue occurs when someone must make frequent decisions throughout the day. Without a break, such people’s abilities to reason become compromised, and they may end up making poor decisions or feeling less confident in their decisions, which may increase their stress levels. Frequent breaks, even if they are just brief walks to get a glass of water, can help avoid both the physical and emotional effects of stress. Stress affects people across the globe. Learning to manage it can make people happier in their personal and professional lives.

The writings of Mark Twain are undeniably an American treasure, and Becky Degan, director of the Hinkletown Mennonite School (HMS) spring play, wants to share that treasure with audiences. “People know (the characters) Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn, but (Twain) wrote so much more,” said Degan. “I would like audiences to take home an appreciation for Mark Twain’s humor and these (students’) abilities to tell these stories with the humor he intended.” Degan will have the opportunity to share Twain with audiences when HMS presents “Twain’s Tales” at the school, 272 Wanner Road, Ephrata, on Friday, March 1, and Saturday, March 2. The March 1 performance will be a dinner theater presentation, which will begin at 5:30 p.m. Performances on March 2 will be held at 2 and 7 p.m. The play will include five of Twain’s works - four short stories and one scene from the book “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer,” featuring Arthur Hamilton as Tom Sawyer and Adrian Ropp as Huck Finn. Other tales will include “The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County,” “Is He Living or Is He Dead?” and “The Joke That Made Ed’s Fortune.” The fourth tale, “The Belated Russian Passport,” will give

actors the opportunity to interact with the audience. “The young traveler … keeps asking the audience, ‘ What do I do now?’” explained Degan of the story, which takes a young man accidentally into Russia. To connect the five tales together, the action is introduced by five storytellers who have gathered on a general store porch in Hannibal, Miss. Degan has been working with the narrators to help them develop a stage camaraderie. Madison Stauffer, who will play storyteller Tess Brady, noted that some of the ways of speaking used in the play are unusual. “We have to do a Southern accent,” she explained. “Instead of ‘get,’ we say ‘git.’” Because several students play a number of different roles, Degan has been helping students learn how to transform from one persona to another. “Working with them to understand (how to play) more than one character (has been a process),” said Degan. Degan, who teaches at HMS, said that she has enjoyed journeying with the students as they delve deeper into Twain’s works with the goal of sharing them with audiences. “One of my favorite parts is helping them understand the stories,” said Degan. “Mark Twain wrote a lot about human nature, and a lot of (his writing) is tongue-in-cheek

and satire.” Degan noted that as the students read the material multiple times they come to better perceive the humor. “They start to … find the stories entertaining and amusing.” Hamilton and Ropp, who are friends in real life, are enjoying the chance to argue with each other as their onstage characters. As opening night approaches, the students’ thoughts are turning to what the show will bring to audiences. Isabelle Stauffer, who plays storyteller Flo Warren, said that she hopes the audiences will laugh at the humorous material. “I hope they will get a smile,” added Madison. Readers who wish to purchase tickets for the show may visit www.hinkletownschool.org/even ts/drama or call 717-354-7100. Tickets will be discounted for children ages 4 to 8 and free for children age 3 and under. Pictured on front: Actors who will take part in the Hinkletown Mennonite School production of “Twain’s Tales” include (from left) Arthur Hamilton as Tom Sawyer, Madison Stauffer as storyteller Tess Brady, Isabelle Stauffer as storyteller Flo Warren, and Adrian Ropp as Huck Finn. The show will play at the school on March 1 and 2. The March 1 performance will be a dinner theater.

impacted by life’s unexpected challenges. Dahl noted that organizers of the banquet were first drawn to consider Graham when they heard her speaking at her father’s funeral, which they watched online. “We were really encouraged by her story and her authenticity,” recalled Dahl, who added that she feels Graham has an important message to share. “She highlighted the fact that Billy Graham was a highly respected and loved evangelist, and even his family had some difficult things happen (to them).” Dahl shared an image that she remembered Graham discussing when she spoke at the funeral. “We appreciate that she talks about her dark times and how when she returned (from those) her dad was there with loving and open arms,” said Dahl. “It was a picture for her of how God

is with us.” That concept aligns with the mission of CrossNet to offer help and hope in the name of Christ. “That hit home because that is what we want our message to be at CrossNet - that God’s arms are open for everyone to come home,” said Dahl. In addition to Graham’s talk, the evening will include an update from Dahl on the ministry with assistance from Carl Edwards, director of development and ministries. “We have some exciting videos to share,” said Dahl. “One is a story of life change and the other is a program highlight video.” Part of offering help and hope is making area residents aware of the needs in New Holland. “Our focus is going to be the poverty and trauma that a lot of people in our community have experienced and how we can become numb to that (fact),” explained Dahl. “We as a community have

such as games or an art project led by a guest instructor. Folks are also welcome to bring their crocheting or knitting projects to work on. “We have time for socialization and visiting with each other,” said Jen Lisowski, director of congregational care at Hopewell UMC. “We then work on some sort of art project together. It’s kind of a fluid hour depending on who is teaching that week.” Attendees recently made scarves for clients at the Lord’s Pantry of Downingtown. Future plans call for possibly adding an exercise program or computer classes. From 11 to 11:45 a.m., participants take part in a faith talk. Hopewell UMC member Cynthia Lyman, who also offers English as a Second Language classes at The Well, leads the discussion. “Right now, we are studying the ‘Upper Room’ (devotional),” said Lisowski. “It’s very relatable.” Lisowski said that the Wednesday program at The Well is free and open to older adults of all ages; older adults do not necessarily need to be senior citizens in order to take part. “It is for older adults who are home and looking to spend time with people in a healthy environment,” said Lisowski. “If they are working on a project at home, why not bring it here?” According to Lisowski, the program for older adults began last spring and then took a break during the summer months. “We did a quick trial last May and we had a good (number) of people attend. But people were busy over the summer, so we launched it again in the fall and ran it for six weeks,” she noted. The program resumed on Jan. 23. “We don’t have an end date, but we will probably run it through the spring,” Lisowski noted. For more information about the program, readers may contact Lisowski at 610-269-1545 or jen@hopewellumc.org. The Well is located on Business Route 30. The building and restroom facilities are handicapped-accessible.

BASIS Support For Grieving Parents Comes To Paradise

FIRST Tech from pg 1 Schaeffer. “It is difficult to visualize the final result, but as each small accomplishment brings the robot to completion, it is lots of fun to think back on the original stages and see how much has improved.” Emily said that she enjoys watching the final outcome of the students’ hard work. “My favorite part is the exhilaration of overcoming a challenge. There is nothing as satisfying as watching the robot, after a thousand iterations of late-night programming, finally move forward and accomplish its goal on the competition field,” said Emily. “To see the robot complete an autonomous program is to see a very visual representation of hard work rewarded and problems solved.” Team member Jake Reese, a ninth-grade homeschooled student, explained that each student has different responsibilities throughout the competition season. “My specific responsibilities include contacting and presenting to potential sponsors, maintaining our team’s website, recording transactions and updating our budget and supporting the upkeep of our team’s engineering notebook,” he said. “I am a part of the programming team, and so I am in charge of making sure our robot will respond to the drivers’ commands and to prewritten autonomous programming,” Emily added. Jake said his favorite part of participating in FIRST Tech is meeting professionals in the community and showcasing the program to others. He added that the program prepares students for their future career plans. “Not only does FIRST inspire the use of

technical skills, but it also promotes communication, collaboration, creativity and critical thinking. These soft skills will greatly help us in the future in the workplace and in the community,” Jake stated. “(These) 21st-century learning skills will be vital to our future success.” Emily added that the team members have grown closer through their working relationship. “Our experiences in FTC have created a bond within our team that is rarely strained by conflict,” Emily added. “Spending so much time together seeking solutions to problems has made it hard for (conflict) to arise among us.” Both Jake and Emily said that they would recommend robotics and the FIRST Tech Challenge program to all interested youths. “Even though FIRST is a robotics competition, it’s not only for those who want to be programmers or engineers,” said Jake. “There are many aspects of other occupations that are incorporated into FIRST, making it an extremely wellrounded program.” “I would enthusiastically recommend FIRST Tech Challenge to other students,” added Emily. “When I originally became a part of my robotics team, I knew nothing about robotics. FIRST Tech Challenge gave me the resources and experiences necessary to learn more not only about robotics, but also about leadership, communication, problem solving and team building,” said Emily, who is a senior homeschooled student. “This program has given me some of my fondest high school memories, and I will miss it very much.”

Akron. “There are so many people in (this area) who have lost children, we thought it would be beneficial to have a group down this way,” said Phyllis. Because fathers and mothers may grieve differently, BASIS has styled the support group atmosphere to be comfortable for all involved. Speaking is not required, but those who wish to are encouraged to share feelings. “Women are (typically) more into

support groups,” noted Nancy. “Men (generally) don’t want to talk about their feelings.” When Phyllis began attending BASIS with Nancy, Dan became interested. Phyllis recalled that when she came home, he would ask questions about the meetings. “I told him it was hard to explain, and he just needed to come (along),” Phyllis said. When Dan attended, he met a few other fathers who were attending, and he is hoping to

see men join the Paradise group. In addition to training, BASIS provides free leadership support through BASIS director Don Allison, as well as a newsletter, meeting topics, and lists of resources. In addition, BASIS holds two yearly countywide gatherings, including a spring breakfast and a summer picnic. BASIS honors the deceased children of members by printing their names with birth and death dates quarterly in the

newsletter. Nancy also described a portable Wall of Remembrance, which includes the children’s names, photos, and other information. The wall is displayed during the picnic and the breakfast. Readers who would like more information about BASIS may visit www.hvmi.org. “No one understands (losing a child) like someone who has been through it,” said Nancy Heckman, who lost her son Rob to stomach cancer more than three years ago. She, along with Dan and Phyllis Steinman, who lost their son, Andy, two years ago in an auto accident, have brought BASIS, a Christian support group for grieving parents, to Paradise. The new BASIS support group, which began meeting in November, is sponsored by Calvary Monument Bible Church, located at 1660 Mine Road, Paradise. It meets near the church on the first Monday of each month at 7 p.m., and the next meeting will be held on Monday, March 4. The organizers attended a training session in Ephrata for leaders prior to starting the group. BASIS, which is associated with Handi-Vangelism Ministries International, stands for Brothers And Sisters In Support, and the ministry provides support, resources, educational workshops, structured gatherings, and more for bereaved parents. According to Phyllis, the meetings revolve around a discussion

topics, such as the holidays or winter, but the agenda is flexible. “If someone is having an issue or a concern is brought up, the conversation will revolve around that,” she explained. “(The meetings are) very welcoming,” added Nancy, who noted that when new members arrive and need to talk about their personal experiences, the leaders can switch gears. Phyllis stated that there is no set curriculum. “If you miss a month, you missed out on the conversation and the sharing, but you don’t have to worry about reading a chapter (in a book),” she said. Phyllis noted that she and Dan are grateful to Nancy for introducing them to BASIS. “After our son, Andy, died, we reached out to pastor Jim Davis at (Calvary Monument to) ask if any other parents had lost children,” she explained. Davis shared the names of Nancy and her husband, Lee, who has since passed away. In early 2017, Nancy asked Phyllis to attend BASIS meetings that are held at a church in Akron. The two began making the monthly trip to Akron, and they found the sessions helpful. However, neither relished the nighttime drive to

Robotics Team from pg 1 Wednesday Nights. During the evening, team members brought two robots for the other youths to experience, including a large robot with an extended arm that is being used during competitions this season. “ We also brought a smaller robot, which is a demonstration robot we use at outreach events to give people an opportunity to drive the robot,” explained Dr. Timothy Tam, one of the team’s coaches and mentors. Kardia Robotics, a FIRST Tech Challenge Team (FTC), is currently in the midst of its third season of competition. As part of the competition, FTC teams play a floor game with their robots. Last season’s project, titled Relic Recovery, required the robots to use a claw to stack foam blocks, transfer relics and retrieve jewels.

participation with FIRST has really helped (team members) in their pursuit of STEM education and learning many skills which will benefit them in their future educational and vocational careers. “ Tam noted that the younger library patrons were especially enthusiastic. “It was so cool hearing 6-year-old boys and girls asking their parent if they could drive the robot or inform us about how much they like robots or want to learn how to build robots,” he remarked. “Some parents even expressed interest in learning more about FIRST and how they could get their kids involved with a team.” For more information about Kardia Robotics, readers may visit www.kardiarobotics .weebly.com or search for “Kardia STEM Program” on Facebook.

improve our robot and engineering notebook so we can try to not just go to States this year but try to do well and maybe even advance to Nationals,” Tam reported. The Pennsylvania FTC Championship will be held on Saturday and Sunday, March 2 and 3, at Oxford Area High School. “If we would be fortunate enough to qualify for Nationals, they will be held in Detroit, Michigan, on April 24 through 27,” Tam noted. He added that the team hopes to take part in future events to promote First Tech. “The outreach was a huge success,” he said. “There were probably about 30 kids and parents who expressed interest in seeing or driving our robot. We were able to have some great interactions with parents and sharing with them about how (the students’)

This season’s floor game is titled Rover Ruckus, which is a space-themed game where the robot must collect minerals and place them into the cargo holds of a lunar lander. The task was devised in commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing, which is being observed this year. A new challenge this year is that the robot has the option to be attached to a lander and land onto the ground before completing the tasks. The Kardia Robotics team competed in York on Feb. 2 and 3 and most recently took part in a qualifying tournament on Feb. 16 in Emmaus. “Even though we had already qualified for the Pennsylvania State Championship at our first competition at Horsham back in December, our focus continues to be trying to

Chocolate-Dipped Sesame Tuiles For many people, no baked good is truly indulgent unless it includes chocolate. Baked goods range from relatively simple fare like chocolate chip cookies to more elaborate indulgences, such as this recipe for Chocolate-Dipped Sesame Tuiles from Michael Recchiuti and Fran Gage’s “Chocolate Obsession” (Stewart, Tabori & Chang). Tuiles are thin, curved cookies that often appeal as much to the eyes as they do to the stomach.

mixture with a rubber spatula. Stir in the butter with the spatula until no streaks of butter remain. 3 - Measure 2 level teaspoons batter onto a prepared sheet pan. Using a small offset spatula, spread it into a round about 3 1/2 inches in diameter. Repeat with the remaining batter, putting 8 rounds on each pan and leaving 1 1/2 inches between the rounds. 4 - Bake the trays, one at a time, until the cookies are a uniform golden brown, 6 to 8 minutes. Remove from the oven and, while the cookies are still warm, run the offset spatula under each cookie and place it upside down on the rolling pin so that it curls around the pin. (You should be able to do five cookies on a rolling pin, so by the time the sixth cookie is about to be draped over the pin, a few should be ready to be moved. Ideally, though, you will have two rolling pins.) If some of the cookies are not a uniform color, or if some cool too much and are no longer

Instructions To bake the cookies: 1 - Preheat the oven to 350 F. Line the bottoms of four 12-by18-inch sheet pans with parchment paper. Lightly coat the paper with flavorless vegetable oil. Put a rolling pin on a work surface. If you have two rolling pins, ready both. 2 - Combine the sesame seeds, flour, sugar, and salt in a medium bowl and whisk by hand until combined. Classes from pg 1 By Francine Fulton

R032128

Living God Lutheran Church (LGLC) is currently offering yoga classes and line dancing lessons on Sundays at the church, located at 3200 Horseshoe Pike (Route 322), Honey Brook. Activities are free, but attendees are asked to bring nonperishable food items that will be donated to the Honey Brook and Twin Valley food pantries. The beginner’s yoga classes are being offered from 3 to 4 p.m. on Sundays through April 7. “If you ever wanted to try yoga, here is your opportunity to try it for the first time or get back into it if you’ve not done it in some time,” said Beth Defeo, LGLC outreach coordinator. She noted that attendees should wear appropriate exercise gear and bring their own mats. The yoga classes are being led by congregation member Joan Rumer. “She leads yoga at Tel Hai (Retirement Community) and offered to do it at the church,” noted Defeo. Country line dancing lessons are held from 6 to 8 p.m. and are being offered by Defeo on Sundays through April 7. Defeo, who has been line dancing since the 1990s, explained that line dancing involves choreographed steps that people perform at the same time. No partners are required. “Lessons are designed for beginners or novice dancers, but we also will do some more advanced dances for those who’ve been dancing for some time,” Defeo said, noting that she offers the classes at the church in three sessions throughout the year. Lessons take place in the church sanctuary, which features a hardwood floor ideal for line dancing. Attendees are advised to wear comfortable clothing and shoes. School-age children are welcome. “I have some regulars coming back, but I always welcome new people who want to give it a try,” Defeo said. “Families have come and brought children along.” In addition to the activities, the Sunday worship service at LGLC is offered at 9:30 a.m. Sunday school is also offered, and child care is available. FIRST RESPONDER SPOTLIGHT: William “Bill” Radford

Cpt. William “Bill” Radford, 73, of Glenmoore, a member of Glen Moore Fire Company Station 48, has been volunteering as a fire police officer since 2016. Radford, a resident of Glenmoore since 1977, started his volunteer career in 2016 after retiring from a 30-plus-year career in the semiconductor industry. Cpt. Radford is a 1963 graduate of Upper Darby High School, attended Temple University and West Chester University, and served in the United States Marine Corps as a machine gunner from 1966 to 1973. He rose to the rank of sergeant in a weapons platoon. Radford has been married to Bonnie PowellMendenhall Radford since 1967. Radford’s son has been volun-

teering as a firefighter and rescue diver for close to 20 years. When Radford retired, his son suggested he volunteer in his local fire department as a way to share his life experiences and knowledge of the local area. After joining the Glen Moore Fire Company in 2016, Radford completed Fire Police I and II training through the Chester County Public Safety Training Center, a premier first responder training facility in Chester County. Radford also holds training certifications in Emergency Vehicle Operations, Hazardous Materials, CPR, and many other areas. Radford was promoted to fire police captain in 2018 and serves at the direction of the Glen Moore Fire

Chief Jeff Seese. Radford oversees all fire police officers and all fire police operations in the primary response district of the Glen Moore Fire Company. “Members of our community like Bill Radford have a tremendous amount to contribute,” said Seese. “Capt. Radford and our fire police officers are an integral component of keeping our volunteers and our citizens safe at emergency scenes. Without them, our personnel would be performing the job at an increased risk. They are an integral part as it pertains to the safety of our operation.” Fire police officers are sworn in as special fire police in the municipalities served by the Glen Moore Fire Company. Once sworn in, they have limited police powers to perform their duties in the commonwealth of Pennsylvania. The majority of what they do is controlling traffic and access during emergencies and special events. These officers are not paid and are contributing their time, often in freezing temperatures and precipitation for hours, to ensure that firefighters, emergency personnel, and the public are safe. Almost 300 teams from 242 high schools across Pennsylvania will compete in district and regional levels of the Statewide Mock Trial Competition sponsored by the Pennsylvania Bar Association Young Lawyers Division. Pennsylvania’s mock trial program, now in its 36th year, is recognized as one of the largest in the nation. During the competition, eight-member student teams are given the opportunity to argue both sides of the case in an actual courtroom before a judge. The students, who play the roles of lawyers, witnesses, plaintiffs, and defendants, are assisted by teacher coaches and lawyer advisers in preparing for competition. Lawyers and community leaders serve as jurors for the mock trials. The juries determine the winners in each trial based on the teams’ abilities to

prepare their cases, present arguments, and follow court rules. The district and regional levels of the competition will continue throughout February and March. At the conclusion of the local competitions, 14 high school mock trial teams will advance to the Pennsylvania Bar Association Statewide Mock Trial Championships, scheduled on Friday, March 29, and Saturday, March 30, in Harrisburg. The winning team of the state championship will represent Pennsylvania in the national mock trial finals to be held from Thursday, May 16, through Saturday, May 18, in Athens, Ga. This year’s hypothetical case is a criminal jury trial in which the defendant, a local pain management doctor, is accused

of prescribing opiate painkillers outside the realm of normal medical practice, resulting in the overdose death of his patient. The case was written by Jonathan A. Grode of Philadelphia, Paul W. Kaufman of Philadelphia, Jonathan D. Koltash of Harrisburg, and Talia Charme-Zane, an alumna of the Pennsylvania mock trial program and former captain of the Central High School team in Philadelphia. For more information about the 2019 Pennsylvania Bar Association Statewide Mock Trial Championships and to read this year’s case, readers may visit www.pabar .org/site/For-the-Public/ Mock-Trial-Competition. Interested volunteers should contact Maria Engles of the Pennsylvania Bar Association at 800-932-0311, ext. 2223.
