Daniel Boone Homestead To Celebrate Community Day BY FRANCINE FULTON
The Daniel Boone Homestead, the birthplace of American pioneer, frontiersman and explorer Daniel Boone, will reopen for the 2022 season with a Community Day on Sunday, March 13, from noon to 4 p.m. All admission fees will be waived that day.
In past years, the March event at Daniel Boone was held to celebrate Charter Day, which is observed annually on the second Sunday in March by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission. Charter Day celebrates the granting of the Pennsylvania Charter to William Penn. See Daniel Boone pg 3

Therapy Dog Provides Comfort And Caring BY FRANCINE FULTON
hen her mother was suffering from Alzheimer’s disease and living in a nursing home, Morgantown resident Lynn Cronomiz recalled what seemed to bring her mother the most joy - a visit by a therapy dog. Today, Cronomiz now has her own therapy dog, named Chester, and together they bring that same sense of comfort and caring to people who need it most, including residents of local nursing homes. “(My mother) could not really talk and was slumped over in a chair, but when the therapy dogs came, she would wake up and look happy and was smiling,” Cronomiz recalled. “It made me realize the importance of the human/animal bond. She grew up on a farm and loved animals, and it reached her.” After Cronomiz’s mother passed away in 2017, a counselor suggested raising a therapy dog as a way to help with the grief. “I was by her bedside, and I couldn’t sleep for two or three
Currently, Chester and Cronomiz visit Tower Behavioral Health and Haven Behavioral Hospital of Eastern Pennsylvania in Reading, as well as Keystone Villa, a senior living community in Blandon. “They get a group of seniors in the rotunda and people pet him, and he does tricks, and we talk about dogs,” she said. “Some days we will go to the rooms where people don’t come out much. We will talk and visit with them.” Chester and his owner also visit the Reading Courthouse, where they provide comfort to children who are preparing to testify in a legal matter at the Children’s Alliance Center. “We go and sit in the waiting room with the child. Even the parents or grandparents are so nervous, and it helps them (as well),” Cronomiz shared. “It’s like a distraction for them. Chester jumps up on the sofa and lays his head on their laps. Sometimes dogs sense when people need attention.” To learn more about KPETS or to request a visit by a therapy dog, visit www.kpets.org.
Costumed volunteer interpreters will be on hand during Community Day at Daniel Boone Homestead to demonstrate Colonial crafts.

months after that. Watching someone slowly decline at the end of life is a struggle,” said Cronomiz. “I went to counseling and the counselor suggested it. It helped me immensely. Helping others alleviated the stress I felt from my mother’s death. I hope Mom is smiling in heaven.” Cronomiz adopted Chester, a 4year-old pit bull/Labrador mix, in 2018 from a rescue in Lancaster. “(My husband I) went there and came home with him that day. He was 10 months old when we got him,” she noted. Chester first took a basic dog obedience course through the Berks County Dog Training Club and then received his training from Keystone Pets Enhanced Therapy Services (KPETS), which also provides therapy cats and other animals. “You become registered as a KPETS therapy team,” Cronomiz noted. “This organization has 400 volunteers. Some people have mini horses, who are not much bigger than Chester. One lady has two ducks and takes them to a library.”

People will be able to bid on items before the concert and during intermission. “(People will) register and get a number and bid on whatever items (they) are interested in,” said Franz. “By the time the concert is over, we should be able to announce the winners.” In addition to the TVHS Jazz Ensemble, other performers will be students from Exeter, Muhlenberg and Oley Valley high schools. “The community can come in and hear some cool jazz music played by Berks County students and raise funds for the music program here at Twin Valley,” said Robert Bennett, TVHS director of bands, who noted that the jazz concert will be free and open to the public. Each of the high school bands will receive a free clinic and performance feedback from local jazz educators and professionals, including saxophonist and teacher Andrew Mohler; John Copenhaver, adjunct professor of trumpet at Lebanon Valley College; and Jonathan Gardner, director of the Kroc Center Jazz Orchestra. “One clinician will come up on stage and give a live clinic for the kids. They will get
direct feedback … and hear how they did and (learn) tips to get better,” said Bennett. The Twin Valley Music Boosters raise funds for equipment and instruments, and they provide scholarships for the students within the TVHS music program. “The boosters provides scholarships for kids to take private lessons. It’s great that the boosters can step in and meet that need,” Bennett stated. More information about the group is available at www.facebook.com/TV .MusicBoosters. Some large-ticket items have already donated to the silent auction, including clear teeth straightening aligners, a gift donated by Dr. Yooson Kim of Family Dentistry of Morgantown, valued at nearly $5,000. Garden Spot Communities has announced that it will affiliate with Allegheny Lutheran Social Ministries (ALSM) of Altoona and Liberty Lutheran Services of Ambler under the new parent company name Ilumin. The affiliation is subject to the receipt of certain regulatory approvals and consents, which the three not-for-profit, faith-based senior living organizations hope to receive by spring. The affiliation is intended to strengthen and benefit all three organizations and their stakeholders. Together, the organizations hope to introduce new services and programs to residents, offer employees more career opportunities, and have a stronger voice in negotiating contracts with health care providers. The three organizations will share an executive leadership team, led by Steve Lindsey, current CEO of Garden Spot Communities and a thought leader in senior living. Lindsey will be joined at the executive level by current leaders of the three affiliating organizations. From Liberty Lutheran, Joan Myers will become chief

Visitors will also have an opportunity to learn about volunteer opportunities at the site. Hicks noted that several projects took place while the site was closed. “We did a Boone house paint analysis that revealed that the original paint was a Spanish red, so we repainted the Boone house to be more historically accurate,” she said. “ We made upgrades to our bridges and restrooms. We will have new lights added to our parking area.” Upcoming plans include a grounds cleanup day on Sunday, March 20; Heritage Wool and Textile Day on Saturday, May 14; and the Daniel Boone Dash, set for Sunday, May 22, which will include a 5K, 10K and family fun walk. Senior Living from pg 3 when the affiliation takes effect this spring. Both intend to continue to serve in the not-for-profit sector. Fisher noted that the three organizations engaged in thorough research and analysis when evaluating the potential for affiliation. The affiliation was approved unanimously by the boards of all three organizations. When the affiliation takes effect, Ilumin will be one of the largest 50 senior living organizations in the country. Its 2,000 team members will
serve nearly 40,000 individuals from nine campuses in 28 Pennsylvania counties. It will also offer communitybased services for multiple generations. Ilumin anticipates that it will report nearly $140 million in revenue. refreshments and a chance to win hunting-related door prizes. There will also be special door prize drawing for children. This year, for the first time, tickets will only be sold online at www.evenbrite.com by searching for “Wagontown Chapel Sportsman’s’ Event 2022.” No tickets will be sold at the door. “They can print out a ticket (from the website) and they bring that to get in,” explained pastor Tim Crans, a resident of Atglen. “ W hen they come to the church, we will give them our ticket, and that is their door prize ticket. We have $15,000 in door prizes that we are giving out.” Door prizes donated by local businesses will include Hoyt bows, Mathews bows, coolers, beverage koozies, wild game calls, gift cards, hats, binoculars and bow and gun cases. Photos of the door prizes can be found at www.facebook

The group will then move into the sanctuary for the presentation at about 1 p.m. Crans will begin by talking about the church’s Archers in Ministry (AIM) program. “We have an archery 3D shoot that the church does every spring and fall at the Camp at the Old Mill in Honey Brook. That is a shoot where you have animal targets all through woods,” he said. “I will also talk about our archery program for kids,
(which is) a three-day camp in June where we teach kids the sport of archery; we provide the equipment.” For more information about AIM, search for “Archers in Ministry” on Facebook. Danker, who started BuckVentures in 2003 with the motto “Shoot by Sight, Walk by Faith,” will then speak about whitetail deer hunting and related topics. He will also incorporate a message about his faith. “At the end of his (television) show, he brings his Bible out and does a five-minute devotional,” said Crans. “We are looking forward to having him here.” The door prizes will be given out following the talk. Crans added that many people look forward to the gathering each year. “It is an outreach for us and an opportunity to get people together to enjoy fellowship and have a good time,” said Crans. “We have an opportunity to share

“Sabina: Tortured for Christ, the Nazi Years” will be shown at 6 p.m. on Sunday, March 20, at Grace and Truth Fellowship, 201 Walnut St., Morgantown. The prequel to the 2018 award-winning feature film “Tortured for Christ,” “Sabina” tells the story of Sabina Wurmbrand, co-founder of The Voice of the Martyrs with her husband, Richard. The Wurmbrands advanced God’s kingdom in Romania amid Nazi and Communist oppression, and Richard’s underground Christian ministry led him to 14 years of imprisonment and torture. Sabina continued her husband’s work during his imprisonment and experienced three years of imprisonment and forced labor as a result. “Sabina” was filmed on location in Romania. The film screening is free and open to the public. For more information, call 610241-7151.
