Making Little Dresses For Africa BY FRANCINE FULTON

An ordinary pillowcase can be transformed into a new outfit for a young girl as part of Little Dresses for Africa, a Christian ministry that provides dresses to girls in need at orphanages, churches and schools in Africa. Locally, Monica Feeley of Elverson is leading an effort to make dresses for the program at St. Thomas More Parish, 2101 Pottstown Pike (Route 100), Pottstown. So far, the newly formed group has met twice and has

created about 37 dresses. The next gathering is scheduled to be held at the church on Tuesday, April 19, from 6 to 8 p.m. Feeley heard about the Little Dresses for Africa program after attending another Catholic church while on vacation. “I saw it in a church bulletin at the Jersey shore. It sparked my interest,” she said. “COVID came and the churches were closed, and when we went back to church, I called the secretary at the parish in New Jersey, and she gave me the information.” See Little Dresses pg 3

he Twin Valley High School (TVHS) Theater Arts program will present “Annie” as its spring musical. Performances will take place at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, April 7, 8 and 9, as well as at 2 p.m. on Sunday, April 10. Based on the Depression-era comic strip “Litle Orphan Annie” by Harold Gray, the musical follows the title character on her journey from an orphanage on the Lower East Side in New York to a mansion on Fifth Avenue. The musical,

T

which includes the well-known songs “It’s the Hard-Knock Life” and “Tomorrow,” was brought to Broadway in 1977, where it won the Tony Award for Best Musical. At TVHS, the performance marks the return of full-scale stage show. “This is the first full stage production of a musical we have performed since before the pandemic,” said producer Jessie Miller, noting that “The Addams Family” was presented in 2019. “ We prepared for ‘Newsies’ in 2020 and one week before opening night, they shut everything down.”

In 2021, Miller noted, TVHS presented “Through the Years: A Musical Revue” to a limited audience. The show featured musical numbers from every show performed at TVHS over the past 15 years. “Everyone had to be masked and we had to (practice) social distancing,” she said. Starring as Annie is 10th-grader Jenna DiFabrizio, who said she first saw the movie at the age of 6. “I just watched it again when I heard we were doing ‘Annie’ for the (spring) show,” she said, noting that auditions were held last fall. “I knew that I wanted to be Annie.”

Parents looking for fun and educational activities for their children to take part in this summer are invited to consider Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) Academies being offered by the Chester County Economic Development Council (CCEDC).

cutting out arm holes and gathering the corners of one end of the pillowcase in both the front and back and folding them down so that elastic can be pulled through. Bias tape is used around the arm holes. “We are doing the easy ones with no sleeves,” noted Feeley. “You can use standard, king or queen and some little tiny pillowcases like a toddler pillow.” The completed dresses will be sent to the organization’s headquarters in Missouri for distribution. “We have to package them and identify them by size and put them in (sealed) containers,” explained Feeley. “They go over with the missionaries. That way, they don’t have to pay exorbitant shipping fees.” The ministry also offers Britches for Boys, which is a program where boys’ shorts are made from T-shirts. “Our goal is to create 300 dresses and then switch to another project,” noted Feeley. Feeley said that she was pleased with the progress the group made during the initial meetings. “Parishioners have really responded generously with their time and talents. It’s a community effort working toward a common goal of helping other people,” she stated. “It’s a very nice thing and a nice fellowship. We’re sitting and working, but we are also talking and laughing. It’s the like the old-time quilting bee.” For more information about the program or to donate pillowcases and other materials, contact Feeley at monicafeeley@yahoo.com. After receiving approval from the Rev. Larry Kozak, pastor of St. Thomas More Parish, Feeley organized a gathering where volunteers worked on making the dresses using pillowcases she purchased from a local discount store. Volunteers brought their own irons and sewing machines. “The first time we had kids help cut the bias tape for the straps. For the second meeting, a woman who owns her own sewing business gave us tips on how to do things faster,” Feeley noted. “One woman brought some pillowcases from her grandmom that were (made of) really heavy cotton and very colorful. (We can use) anything colorful that you can’t see through.” Instructions on how to make the pillowcase dresses include

The cast has mastered the music and is now perfecting the staging. “Blocking is the hardest part - knowing where you are supposed to be and when,” Jenna said. “We have so many different interactions (with the other characters).” In addition to Jenna, featured cast members include Gary Meals as Daddy Warbucks, Cat Ramage as Miss Hannigan, Heather Anderson as Grace, Michael Haak as Rooster and Hannah Kurtz as Lily. Two local pet owners have “loaned” Sandy and Rocky to portray Annie’s dog, Sandy. “ We are excited and also nervous about using real dogs to play the role of Sandy,” said Miller. “That’s the beauty of live theater. You never know what’s going to happen.”

In addition to Miller, the adult production staff includes Nicole Weaver, director; Reid Simmons, choral director; Tonna Dieter, orchestra conductor; Susan Findley, choreographer; Jimy Kuhn, light and sound director; Ken Reinert and Adam Sanders, stage designers; Andi Lydon and Wendy Clayton, costumers; Michele Algier, prop master; and Anne Reinert, production assistance. Clair Leaman, a member of St. Stephen Church, New Holland, is looking forward to the church hosting “The Gospel According to Bach,” and he wants area residents to know about the heart behind the group’s presentation. “They are doing it because Tom (Elliott) has this vision of people hearing the Scripture and the story of the crucifixion and being touched by it and coming to know Christ as their savior,” said Leaman. “That’s his goal.” Trombonist Tom Elliott and his wife, Cheryl, who is a violinist, will present “The Gospel According to Bach” with other professional musicians and a narrator at St. Stephen Church, 249 E. Main St., New Holland, on Friday, April 8, at 7 p.m. The event is free, and registration is not necessary to attend. According to Leaman, Elliott started with J.S. Bach’s “St. Matthew Passion,” and arranged portions as solos for trombone or other instruments or to be played by the ensemble. “A narrator reads Scripture, and they weave it all together,” said Leaman. Professional musicians who make up the rest of the ensemble are Richard Amoroso on cello, Scott Antony on organ, Emilie Park on violin, and Ana Tsinadze on viola. The shortened presentation will feature evangelist and vocalist Todd Thomas. Leaman explained that the “St. Matthew Passion” includes seven chorales. “When they get to the chorales, (Elliott) leads the audience accompanied by the ensemble, and they sing the chorales,” said Leaman. The Elliotts studied at the Curtis Institute of Music before leading successful music careers. Tom is a founder and former director of the Westminster Brass, and Cheryl served as associate concertmaster for the Minnesota Orchestra. Amoroso attended the Philadelphia College of the Performing Arts, earning degrees in performance. He has played with the Philly Pops Orchestra. Antony is a freelance musician and accompanist who studied at the Peabody Conservatory. He serves as organist at Cresheim Valley Church and as rehearsal pianist and music director for a number of regional theaters.

Park began studying violin as a child. She is a graduate of Philadelphia Biblical University, and she was a faculty member at Settlement Music School of Philadelphia for more than a decade. Tsinadze was born in Tbilisi, Republic of Georgia, and she began her music education as a child. In 1995, she moved to the U.S. She is an active chamber musician, recitalist, soloist, and orchestral player. Thomas is an American baritone who has had an international operatic career for more than three decades. He
