Ryerss Farm Sets Run For The Horses be no race-day registration,” explained Joelle Temoyan, administrative manager at Ryerss. “Registration can be done online, or you can stop by the farm; we have the forms.” Although the number of participants is not limited, the start times will be staggered. Runners will start the race with masks, but once they are distanced from others, masks can be removed. Runners should be prepared to put their masks back on if other participants are close by. Spectators will be required to wear masks at all times while on the property.

Check-in will begin at 11:30 a.m., and the race will start at 1 p.m. All proceeds will benefit the retired and rescued horses that reside at the farm. The stage crew is currently preparing for Twin Valley High School’s spring production, “Through the Years: A Musical Revue,” which will feature songs from the last 15 years of shows performed at the school.
TVHS To Stage “Through The Years: A Musical Revue” ince 2006, Twin Valley High School (TVHS) has presented a spring musical ranging from “Anything Goes” in 2010 to “Footloose” in 2015 to “The Addams Family” in 2019. To celebrate the past performances, this year’s spring musical at TVHS will be “Through the Years: A Musical Revue,” a show that will feature musical numbers from every show performed at TVHS over the past 15 years. There will also be a sneak peek into next year’s show. “Through the Years: A Musical Revue” will be staged on Thursdays, April 15 and 22, at 7 p.m.; Friday, April 16, at 7 p.m.; Saturdays, April 17 and 24, at 7 p.m.; and Sundays, April 18 and 25, at 2 p.m.

TVHS librarian Jessie Miller, show producer, noted that the students have adapted to COVID-19 restrictions while preparing for the production. “We followed social distance guidelines this year with rehearsals and staging this musical. The kids have been great sports and have really adapted to this crazy situation that we are in,” she stated. “We started out the season knowing that we could only have 30 people in the audience each night. Luckily, the restrictions have been lifted, so know we are able to have about 200 each night with the audience members sitting 6 feet apart.” Musical numbers will include “Oh, What a Beautiful Mornin’” from “Oklahoma!” (2006); “Lullaby of Broadway” from “42nd Street”
(2017); and “Once and for All” from “Newsies” (2020). TVHS agriculture science teacher Nicole Weaver, show director, noted that TVHS’ 2020 production of “Newsies” was recorded and presented virtually. “We are really looking forward to having the cast and crew perform in front of a live audience again,” said Weaver. “They miss it so much, and they have really been deprived of a lot the past year - especially the seniors. We are so excited for them to have this opportunity to act and sing for an audience.” “What’s really great about this year is that instead of having just a few lead roles, we were able to feature over 20 students in lead roles and solos,” Miller added.
Those with an interest in history or looking to learn a new craft are invited to take part in educational classes being offered at Historic Joanna Furnace, 1250 Furnace Road, Geigertown, on select dates from April through August. A class will also be offered for those considering becoming a tour guide at the historic site as part of the education /interpretation team.

A Match Between Ministries
MORGANTOWN - HONEY BROOK
BY ANN MEAD ASH
According to Lisa Kerstetter, director of marketing and events with CrossNet Ministries, the connection between the organization and Anchored Ministries in Elverson began in the spring of 2018 with a weekly newsletter called the Macaroni Kid. Barbara Vargas, then the editor of the newsletter, reached out to CrossNet. “(She) mentioned a clothing ministry,” recalled Kerstetter, noting that the ministry was Anchored Ministries. Kerstetter soon met with Erika Kanter, director of Anchored Ministries, and in late summer 2018, the two ministries partnered for CrossNet’s annual backpack giveaway, with Kanter bringing a clothing trailer to the event. Now, the two ministries partner regularly for the community meal at CrossNet Ministries held the fourth Monday of each month from 5 to 6:30 p.m. at the CrossNet Youth Center, 110 W. Franklin St., New Holland. A clothing trailer from Anchored will also be at the Blue Ball Elementary

Community Connection event on Thursday, May 6, at the school on Ewell Road in East Earl from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. The trailer will also be present at three upcoming CrossNet events at the youth center, including the 2021 backpack giveaway on Tuesday, Aug. 10, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; the winter coat giveaway on Monday, Oct. 11, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and the Christmas gift giveaway on Saturday, Dec. 11, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Anchored story began in 2016 when Kanter was studying fashion and praying for God to use her. “I wanted to be the hands and feet, so I prayed for direction,” recalled Kanter, who saw God tap into her love of clothing by giving her a passion to put clothing in the hands of the homeless and others who could not afford it. “One day, I decided to collect clothing and take it to the streets of Reading and hand it out,” stated Kanter, who borrowed a trailer and took 82 boxes of clothing to the city to give away. “In July 2017, we received a trailer,” reported Kanter. The ministry now has four trailers, including one sporting air conditioning

and heat. The inside of each trailer has been converted to hold clothing on racks, and each one is stocked with clothing for newborns through adults, along with shoes, toiletries, and blankets. Personal shoppers are available to help find sizes and styles. Kanter said that the trailers are at events between four and eight times per month. Anchored is more than a clothing ministry. The 501(c)(3) nonprofit, which is located at 40 S. Chestnut St., Elverson, recently worked with Twin Valley School District to provide Easter baskets and meals to 21 families and 60 children. Hoping to fashion Anchored on the CrossNet
model, the organization holds a backpack giveaway, Christmas gift giving program, free community meals, and more. CrossNet now accepts clothing for Anchored Ministries at 123 W. Franklin St., New Holland, on Mondays through Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Kanter noted that clothing should be clean and in good condition without blemishes or excessive wear. Shoes, blankets, and accessories are also accepted along with toiletries. More information about Anchored Ministries may be found at www.anchored ministries.org or by searching for “Anchored Ministries PA” on Facebook.

Birdsboro Church of the Nazarene, 715 E. Third St., Birdsboro, is currently seeking new or gently used prom dresses to be distributed to local girls as part of its Clothing Closet ministry. Prom dresses can be dropped off at the church office on Mondays from 9 a.m. to noon and on Wednesdays between 5:30 and 6:30 p.m. in the lower level of the church. Dresses will be accepted through the last week of May. Dresses must be clean and fashionable. “They must be clean (with) no stains and they must be five years (old)
or newer,” said Betty Kennedy, who helps run the clothing ministry and is the advertising coordinator. The Clothing Closet has already received some dresses for girls to choose from, as well as dress shoes and handbags. Girls in need of a prom dress are invited to “shop” for a free dress during the Clothing Closet’s hours of operation, which are on the fourth Wednesday of the month from 5 to 7 p.m. The next scheduled clothing distribution date will be April 28. As part of the Clothing Closet ministry, anyone may choose free clothing for themselves or their families. It is
not necessary to provide income information or be a resident of Birdsboro. Those who visit the closet are able to choose from clothing for men, women, children, and infants, as well as shoes, belts, purses and accessories, and household items. The clothing is sorted by volunteers and placed in various rooms in the church’s basement. Men’s and women’s items are placed in one room, and another room houses clothing for infants through teenagers. Additionally, visitors may choose from household goods that have been donated, as well as personal care items. Because of the pandemic, the Clothing Closet ceased opera-
tions in March and reopened in July 2020. Currently, no children are allowed during the clothing distributions and people must bring their own bag to fill. Those who are not feeling well or have tested positive for COVID-19 within the past 14 days before their visit should return to the Clothing Closet the next month. The Clothing Closet is located in the lower level of the church building and can be accessed through the brown door at the left-hand side of the parking lot when facing the back of the church. For more information about the Clothing Closet, contact the church office at 610-5824700 or bnc@birdsboronaz.org.

Penn State Extension will offer its Tree Climbing School to teach the fundamentals of safe tree climbing and maintenance. The program will be held from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 5, through Friday, May 7, at Gring’s Mill Recreation Area, 2083 Tulpehocken Road, Reading. To achieve success in this climbing course, all participants should be in good health and have a desire to work in arboriculture. On the first day, all participants will be asked to sign a waiver. The school will include classroom and fieldwork. Topics will include safety and safe climbing practices, equipment and use of hand tools, tree terminology, tree disease and insect diagnosis, culture and pruning, tree removal, and knots. Students completing this school will not be accomplished climbers. However, students will have the basic understanding, knowledge, and skills required in the field of tree maintenance and tree climbing. A great deal of time will be spent in trees climbing. There is a cost to attend. Registration is required by Tuesday, April 27. To register, call 877-345-0691 or visit https://extension.psu.edu and search for Tree Climbing School.
Classes will take place in person at the site. The programs are open to those age 16 and over. Instructors will be volunteer educators with the Hay Creek Valley Historical Association (HCVHA). “Learn to Be a Joanna Furnace Tour Guide” will be offered on Tuesday, April 27, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. The class will focus on hands-on training inside the historic Joanna Furnace buildings provided by various HCVHA interpreters. “(Participants) will get a nice binder of information that will become their own study guide,” explained Mark Zerr, HCVHA executive director. “If the class date doesn’t suit people, Hay Creek is willing to work out other arrangements to get them to be trained and comfortable to be a tour guide here.” “Letters of a Daughter’s Devotion Preserved for Centuries” will be held on Tuesday, April 20, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. HCVHA president Juliana Flora, the great-

In the past, visitors were encouraged to feed the horses with cut-up carrots or apples. Because of the pandemic, however, visitors are asked to purchase treats from the gift shop to give to the horses. On the day of the run, people will be able to visit the horses, many of which line the fence to watch the runners pass by. In addition, Ryerss has a resident pig named Rhubarb. “He has been here for 10 years, but people have become interested in him and people can sponsor him like (they do for the) horses,” Temoyan added. To register by Friday, April 16, visit www.ryerssfarm.org or www.run theday.com/register/detail/ryerss -run-10k-5k-walk. For more information, call 610-469-0533 or visit www.facebook.com/ryerss.farm.

The runs and walk will take participants along a cross-country course throughout the farm, through fields and around pastures. Runners in the 5K and 10K will be electronically timed. The times and division winners will be announced online. Medals will not be handed out in person. Those who earn a medal will receive it in the mail. There will be separate registration fees for the 5K and 10K and the walk. “All registration fees will come back to care for the horses,” said Temoyan, noting that the site’s gift shop will be open during the day, offering equine-related items, including plush miniature horses. “We will be setting up an online gift shop within the next month.” Those who cannot participate have the option to sponsor a 5K or 10K runner. Information about this sponsorship program can be found at www.ryerssfarm.org. Ryerss Farm remained open during the stay-at-home order in 2020 so that the resident horses could be fed and taken care of. “We shut everything down and it was employees only until Pennsylvania

lives to COVID-19. In addition to Warwick County Park, pinwheels were also installed at Springton Manor Farm in Glenmoore and at Nottingham Park. The memorial tributes marked one year since Chester County recorded its first coronavirus death. At each of the locations, a sign was posted near the memorial with a quote by poet Thomas Campbell that read, “To live in hearts we leave behind is not to die.” Chester County Commissioners Marian Moskowitz, Josh Maxwell and Michelle Kichline held a special memorial service at Springton Manor Farm in Glenmoore on March 27, where they laid three wreaths - one to honor the 543,975 lives lost nation-
ally; one for the 24,953 lives lost across Pennsylvania; and one to commemorate the 747 lives lost in Chester County. Under the Springton Manor Farm great oak tree, 747 pinwheels were displayed - one for each life lost in Chester County since the start of the pandemic. “Our family, those who we worked with and members of our community - we miss them,” said Moskowitz. “We hope this ceremony will serve as part of the collective healing for our Chester County community.” Moskowitz shared how she coped with losing her sister seven years ago. “My wish is that you remember their smiles, remember their stories, remember something funny they said or did,” she

stated. “Remember their history, their shared memories. Remember they loved you, and even with tears in your eyes and pain in your heart, remember to smile when you think of them.” Maxwell said that it was fitting that the memorials were located in the parks. “ We know that our parks and trails and the many other conservancies and preserves throughout Chester County have been a haven for fresh air, for exercise and for switching off the outside world part time to enjoy nature,” he noted. In addition to remembering those that lost their lives, Maxwell gave credit to health care workers. “By the very nature of their professions, our doctors, our nurses, hospital staff, long-term care personnel and EMTs all understand and accept that sometimes their jobs go beyond diagnosis, treatment and care,” he said. Kichline concluded the ceremony, quoting a passage from the book “The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse” by Charlie Mackesy: “‘What do we do when our hearts hurt?’ asked the boy. ‘We wrap them with friendship, shared tears and time (until) they wake hopeful and happy again.’” See Memorials pg 5

As people arrive on the day of the event, they will be directed to tables where they can place thier plants. theables will be marked with different categories such as sun perennials, shade perennials and herbs. “At 6:30 p.m. when the tables are full, I ask everyone to pick their one favorite plant that they really want,” Ekdahl said. “Once we do that, people can help themselves. Generally we ask people to take as many (plants) as they brought. If there are leftovers, it’s anybody’s game.” The 2020 spring plant swap at HPF was canceled because of the pandemic, but the fall plant swap did take place last September. “It’s a nice way to share, and sometimes when you find who you got the plants from, you can go back and talk to them,” Ekdahl said. “It’s nice a way for people to share their gardens with one another.”

We have local neighbors and people in the community,” said Dawn Ekdahl, HPF executive director. “We have a lot of people who bring really nice plants from their gardens that you may not find anywhere else - heirloom or unusual or expensive. If they have more than they need, they pot them and bring them. We have some nice surprises.” She noted that local nurseries have

Team Jennifer Cahill To Hold First Fundraiser DVCCC To Hold Virtual Gala which will hold its kickoff event on Saturday, May 15, from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. on the grounds of the Reinholds Fire Station, 138 W. Main St., Reinholds. The event will include car and motorcycle shows and rides, a Chinese auction, more than 20 product and craft vendors, several food trucks, and live entertainment. Spectators are welcome at 8 a.m., with registrations for cars and bikes held from 10 to 11:30 a.m. The ride is scheduled to start at noon. Mike noted that the mission of the charity is twofold. First, the group helps preplan and prepay final expenses and arrangements for female veterans who have terminal cancer and do not have life or burial insurance or other resources. He explained that many people believe that veterans are automatically covered for these expenses, but that is not necessarily the case, and many families have to pay significant out-ofpocket expenses. “We will off-

After disabled United States Air Force veteran Jennifer Cahill was diagnosed with terminal cancer in May of 2020, she was amazed at the number of people who reached out to help her and her husband, Mike, who is also a disabled veteran, with expenses. “I got this diagnosis, and (we) learned we had no burial insurance,” recalled Jennifer. “Some friends took it upon themselves to start fundraisers, and people I don’t know … strangers reached out … even during the pandemic.” The fundraisers were so successful, the Cahills were able to prepay Jennifer’s expenses, and they had money left over. By September of 2020, Jennifer had made up her mind to find a way to aid others in the same situation. “I thought how awesome it would be for others to have that support and help,” she shared. The result is Team Jennifer Cahill Charities,
set final expenses,” explained Mike, who added that funds could be available up to $16,500. Second, Team Jennifer Cahill wants to raise awareness concerning female veterans. Mike pointed out that when most people think of veterans, they picture a man in a dress uniform, but there are many female veterans like Jennifer, who served in communications and security in Alaska from 1995 to 1999. Mike said that the rides at the kickoff event will follow a protocol similar to the MakeA-Wish Convoy but with hot rods and motorcycles rather than trucks. “(Cars) will go 20 miles in one direction, and bikes will go 30 miles in another direction,” he explained. In addition to
product and craft vendors, there will be a Chinese auction featuring a saddlebag for a 2017 Harley Davidson Breakout. Live entertainment will be provided by Easily Amused, a Southern rock cover band called Buckskin Whiskey, and Dirt Road Redemption. Food items for purchase will be provided by Holy Smoked Meats, Fink’s French Fries, and Auntie Anne’s, among others. Team Jennifer Cahill will sell hot dogs in the pavilion. Jennifer and Mike noted that they would like to raise more than $15,000 from the event. Readers may find more information about the organization by visiting https://team jennifercahillcharities.org or by searching for “Team Jennifer Cahill Charities” on Facebook.

The Domestic Violence Center of Chester County (DVCCC) will celebrate 45 years of serving the community with a virtual gala on Friday, April 23, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Participants will enjoy a catered meal to eat at home and entertainment by the A Cappella Pops, as well as learn about the organization’s mission to provide programs and services for survivors of domestic violence in Chester County. Although the event is typically held in person, organizers of this year’s gala decided to make it virtual because of the pandemic. “It’s our biggest fundraiser of the year and we wanted to hold it even it meant making it virtual,” said Danielle Dougherty, DVCCC director of philanthropic partnerships. “Last year it was supposed to be at Franklin Commons (in Phoenixville), and it was canceled. We’re hoping to hold it there in 2022 in person.” Registrants will receive a dinner package catered by ANEU Catering & Events in Malvern with the option for pickup or delivery by a DVCCC volunteer. All tips will be donated to the organization. In addition, everyone will receive a Gala Celebration Kit, complete with goodies, mailed to their home. “(The meal) comes in a thermal package, and it has reheating instructions,” Dougherty explained. “You can eat it while logging on to our Zoom gala.” The virtual gala will be hosted by Jen Croneberger, founder of JLynne Consulting Group. “She
is a longtime supporter of the DVCCC. She is an TEDx speaker and author,” noted Dougherty. The program will be presented live from Advanced Staging Productions in West Chester. The gala will be broadcast as a Zoom webinar, meaning viewers will only see the speakers and not all of the other attendees. “There will be some prerecorded content, but (Croneberger) will be live,” noted Dougherty. “Our CEO will be joining and share some information about our mission, and the president of our board will also be saying a few words. Tracey Davidson from NBC-10 will share a prerecorded message.” Providing entertainment for the night will be A Cappella Pops, a mixed voice chorus that will perform three songs. The theme of the gala is “All That’s Purple 2021: 45 Years of Empowerment.” “The big thing is that 2021 is our 45th anniversary so there will be a special celebration video compilation,” said Dougherty, noting that purple is the symbol of domestic violence awareness. “We will also be presenting our annual award recipients.” To coincide with the gala, a silent auction will run from Monday, April 19, through Friday, April 23. “You do not have to register for the gala to take part in the auction,” Dougherty added. For more information and to register for the event, visit www.dvcccpa.org/gala. Silent auction offerings will also be available on the website.

Program Earns Recognition
®
R068943
The West Chester University/Bryn Mawr Hospital Respiratory Care Program has been named a recipient of the 2021-22 Apex Recognition Award by the American Association for Respiratory Care (AARC). The program is among an elite group of only eight respiratory care educational programs from across the U.S. to receive this award. In conjunction with Bryn Mawr Hospital, West Chester University offers a Bachelor of Science degree in respiratory care. Students train to become respiratory care professionals through the partnership of an institution of higher learning and a teaching hospital. Respiratory care professionals, who work to evaluate, treat, educate, and care for patients with breathing disorders, have become particularly crucial in the care and treatment of COVID patients. As COVID often affects the lungs, respiratory therapists provide critical care to these patients through ventilator management and by helping to maintain adequate oxygenation and ventilation. In addition to the part they play in the COVID pandemic, respiratory therapists also work with infants as young as 23 weeks old who have incomplete lung development as well as adults who have been diagnosed with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) such as emphysema or pulmonary fibrosis. The Apex Recognition Award recognizes facilities for their commitment to excellence in professional development, evidence-based care, patient safety, patient satisfaction, and quality improvement. Awards are presented to facilities in five categories: acute care hospitals, longterm care facilities, home medical equipment (HME) companies, educational programs, and dedicated transport teams. The full list of Apex recipients can be found at www.aarc.org.

CCDDAS recently noted that the opioid and overdose crisis, along with other substance use disorders, are still prevalent during the pandemic. The upcoming events are part of a continued effort to prevent further opioid use disorders (OUD) and accidental overdose death. All event details and registrations can be found on www.chesco .org/drugandalcohol. Residents should wear a mask and practice social distancing at all locations. A Virtual Opioid Epidemic and Narcan Training hosted by Chester County Hospital will be held on Wednesday, April 21, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Each participant will receive training on the use of naloxone and receive a dose of naloxone at no charge. In that tradition, the events will follow all guidelines from the Pennsylvania Department of Health and local facilities to provide a safe and responsible event for all participants and for Luzerne County as the host. The Pennsylvania Senior Games will not be held in 2021. This event is a multisport festival for people age 50 and up, which is held in PA biennially in even years to qualify athletes to compete at the National Senior Games. The National Senior Games will next take place in May 2022 in the Fort Lauderdale area; for details, visit www.nsga.com. Seniors who would have participated in the Pennsylvania Senior Games are invited to instead enter the Keystone State Games this summer, where many sports will have senior age divisions.
