Visitors to the Daniel Boone Homestead on Saturday, April 27, will be able to follow all the steps that were required to process wool in the 18th century - from shearing sheep to weaving the wool - during the annual presentation of Sheep
and Fiber Day. Events will take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Attendees will be able to start the day at the barn, where the site’s resident sheep will be sheared. The sheep’s wool will be washed, and the wool will then go through the picking process, which is a task done to remove debris that does not come out during the washing. “This is done by hand,” explained Daniel Boone board member Anne See Sheep And Fiber Day pg 5

When nursery teacher Dawn realized that Sherry, the mother of one of her students, was on the verge of homelessness, she connected her to Bridge of Hope @ Good Samaritan Services (GSS).
The program saved Sherry, the mother of four, after a family conflict jeopardized their living arrangement. Dawn also pulled together a “neighboring” group at their church, which became an essential support system for Sherry during her two years in the Bridge of Hope program. Through those essential two years, Sherry learned budgeting skills, was promoted in her fulltime work and found permanent See Golf Outing pg 9

Jon Noel has been named sales manager for Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc.’s (EPC) Advertiser, Merchandiser, Pennysaver and Community Courier weekly newspapers in Lancaster and Dauphin counties. Noel is a native of northwestern Pennsylvania and has a degree in journalism from Penn State. He has worked at daily and weekly newspapers in various-size markets over his more than 30-year career. “I’m excited to become part of the EPC family,” Noel said. “I’ve always had a great deal of respect for the company from my days as advertising director at the Lebanon Daily News. I think it’s amazing that we can tell our advertisers we reach well over 90 percent of the households in our market area, while at the same time smaller businesses can select the individual publications and even ZIP codes that will do the best job reaching their current and potential customers. I look forward to working with our knowledgeable and caring staff
The Historical Society of Salisbury Township will hold a book signing and historical presentation on Saturday, May 4, from 2 to 4 p.m. at historic White Chimneys Estate. Attendees will have a chance to meet the authors of the historical society’s newest publication, “Civil War Veterans Who Lived in or Were Buried in Salisbury Township, Lancaster County, PA.” Alfred Brown, Alfred Gerhardt Jr. and Joan Lorenz have assembled the book to honor the Civil War soldiers of the area. The project began in September 2011 and was completed in October 2018. The 569-page book contains 439 full biographies as well as photos, newspaper clippings and other documents. “I did a small project for Westtown Township in Chester County. Joan saw it and decided she wanted to do it for Salisbury,” said Brown, explaining how the project got started. “I’m an English teacher, so I’m used to doing things like this. With these two guys working so hard and so well, it was a pleasure,” Lorenz said, praising Brown and Gerhardt, both of whom are veterans. “I’m very proud. Here these two veterans now are able to spotlight veterans of earlier times.” Information was gathered from hundreds of newspaper clippings, obituaries, letters and other documents. Sources are fully cited in footnotes. The bulk of the biographies cover Union veterans, but there were a few area residents who served the Confederacy. One chapter covers the complex history of Martin Buzzard, who began as a Union Army member, but switched sides after he was captured. Captured again by the North, he returned to Union Army. The book also includes information on life on the home front and information on Salisbury Township veterans and

Sheep And Fiber Day from pg 1 Goda. “You are basically picking out sticks and dirt that is caught in the fibers.” The wool is then carded to continue the cleaning process and to separate and disentangle the fibers. Spinning follows the carding, whether it is done on a hand-spindle, a thigh spindle or a wool wheel. Once the wool is spun, plied and washed to set the twist, it is yarn. Yarn can then be woven into cloth. To get colored wool, the wool would have been dyed with natural materials like those that would have been used in the
18th century, such as walnut bark, red beets, berries and turmeric. “Those are just things they would have naturally had access to,” said Goda. Children will be given a piece of wool during Sheep and Fiber Day, which they can then take through all the steps. “When they get a piece of wool, it will be already washed and they can walk it through the processes,” explained Goda. “They can card it, spin it and they can dye it if they want to. We will be using kid-friendly Kool-Aid dyes.” In addition to wool process-
ing, visitors will learn about flax and hemp fibers and how they were processed and used in the 18th century. Other 18th-century demonstrations will occur throughout the site, including blacksmithing, gun building, baking in the 18thcentury bake oven, open hearth cooking and sawing planks in the 18th-century water-powered sawmill. A re-enactor will serve as the town crier. He will announce the timed events throughout the day. Horse-drawn wagon rides will provide transportation See Sheep And Fiber Day pg 6

For example, one window features the IHS symbol, which in Latin is an acronym for “Jesus Hominum Salvator,” which translates to “Jesus, Savior of Man.” The window is dedicated “In Loving Memory of Mazy E. Butler by her daughter, B.P. Clark.” Another window dedication reads, “Presented by Mrs. Emma Stneback’s Sunday School Class.” There is also a window dedicated “In Loving Memory of William H. Conference from pg 4 volunteered at her daughter’s school. The guest speaker at the lunch will be Joyce Chester, president and CEO of the Chester County Opportunities Industrialization Center (OIC). Amber Little, candidate for state representative, will be the master of ceremonies. “After lunch comes even more fun things,” Johnson added. “We will have a whole area for pampering - massages, makeovers, haircuts and hair styling and essential oil treatments. And, we will (offer) Zumba.” Johnson said the event has grown through the years, noting activities are held in the school’s two gymnasiums, the cafeteria and the classrooms. “The first few years about 50 to 70 women attended, but it has since doubled,” she stated. “We also have giveaways and (prize drawings). Everybody walks out with pink bags with a lot of gifts in them. No one leaves empty handed.” Likewise, she added, children will enjoy special games and activities while their moms are participating in conference events. “What I’m really excited about is the activities they plan for the kids. It’s a fun day even for them,” Johnson noted. The Chester County Community Collaborative, which makes the event possible, is composed of the following organizations: Good Samaritan Services, Home of the Sparrow, North Star of Chester County (formerly known as Interfaith Housing Assistance Corporation of Chester County), ACT in Faith of Greater West Chester, Open Hearth Inc., Chester County Intermediate Unit, Maternal and Child Health Consortium of Chester County, YMCA of Brandywine Valley and Wings for Success. Students’ skills are tested when entering the program, and they are asked what goals they have, such as earning a GED or obtaining U.S. citizenship. “All the students have different levels of need and goals,” Rikess noted. Rikess pointed out that most students have goals of improving their reading, writing and spelling, as well as speaking skills. “They need to be able to converse in English with neighbors, teachers, doctors and employers,” she said. All the information is given to the tutors before they meet the students. “We ask tutors to do training online, which is about four hours, and then they meet with their students, but they can choose a student before the training,” Rikess said. “They can choose based on student goals, meeting time and place.” She noted that some students’ cultures require females to have a

No experience is necessary, but volunteers must have a minimum of a bachelor’s degree. According to Rikess, there is a current waiting list of 20 people located throughout Chester County who are in need of volunteer tutors. “Most of the need is for ESL students, but we also have GED students as well,” she noted. Tutors are asked to meet with a student for a minimum of three hours a week for at least one year. She said that most student/tutor pairs meet twice a week for an hour and a half each time. “Most meet at libraries, but

Carole Evans, a member of the Friends of the Adamstown Library and an organizer of the group’s upcoming used book sale, is excited about how the sale will help the community work toward a new library building. “We have been aiming for this for so long,” said Evans, who shared that she hopes demolition and rebuilding will begin in September at the site of the existing VFW building that was purchased by the library in 2016. The Friends group will host its annual used book sale on Wednesday, May 1, through Saturday, May 4, in the fellowship hall at Peace United Church of Christ, 37 E. Swartzville Road, Denver. housing for her family. Sherry is just one example of the many women that Bridge of Hope @ GSS has helped become independent and successful. Bridge of Hope @ GSS aims to reduce homelessness among all women and children in the local community. From 2017 to 2018, its Permanent Housing Services program served 208 women and children, provided $87,792 in rental assistance to single mothers across Lancaster and Chester counties and helped 12 families graduate from the program, according to www.goodsamservices.org. The organization’s services include case management and goal planning, resource development, life skills and parenting support, mentoring/volunteer support and financial assistance for rent, utilities and transportation. In 2017, Good Samaritan Services took Bridge of Hope Lancaster and Chester Counties under its wing via a merger between the nonprofits. Both had the same mission but offered different services, so combining allowed them to be even more effective in accomplishing their goals. “As a result of the merger, families in our Bridge of Hope @ GSS program can now participate in our Matched Savings and Microloan programs,” explained Nate Hoffer, the CEO of Good Samaritan Services. “The Matched Savings program awards $600 and the Microloan program awards loans up to $2,500 to clients, which, when paid back, rebuilds their credit.” In October 2018, the Bridge of Hope @ GSS program was given several awards from Bridge of Hope National for being the highest-performing program site in the network across both the U.S. and Canada. “We received awards for
serving the most families and successfully helping families move into permanent housing,” said Hoffer. Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc. (EPC) will again partner with Bridge of Hope @ GSS for the 12th annual Golf Outing, which completely benefits the nonprofit. “We have been supporting Bridge of Hope @ GSS for the past decade, impressed by the continued progress they continue to make in the lives of our neighbors,” said EPC publisher Jocelyn Engle, who spearheads the event. “We are passionate to benefit organizations that recognize the importance to provide wholeness to individuals and families in need of support.” In the past decade of the partnership, EPC has raised a total of $135,000, which has been directly used to provide rental assistance and case management services to the families in the Bridge of Hope program. “We recognize that our strong community can have a positive influence, not only financially but emotionally and physically,

Evans said the Friends members have collected and sorted about 20,000 books in a variety of genres. “We have children’s books,” noted Evans, who added that there will be a number of mystery books and plenty of fiction at the sale. “(The) science fiction (section) is huge,” Evans added. Other categories will include history, military, cookbooks, self-help, health, inspirational, biography, and art and music. In addition, puzzles, DVD, and CDs for both children and adults will be for sale. The Adamstown Area Library board is working toward completing the final leg of its Room to Grow capital campaign. The goal is $1.5 million. The library serves more than 30,000 residents in five municipalities: Adamstown Borough, Brecknock Township, Denver Borough, East Cocalico Township, and West Cocalico Township. The new library, which will be located on the footprint of the VFW building located at 110 W. Main St., Adamstown, will be designed to fit in with the surrounding buildings and accommodate the circulation desk, offices, and children’s area. The library has been housed in its present location at 3000 N. Reading Road since 1998, when it was moved from the basement of the Adamstown YMCA. The Adamstown Borough leases the current space to the library for $1 per year. Each year, the Friends hope to raise $10,000 from the used book sale, but Evans noted that they often exceed the goal, raising $11,000 or more. This year, the Friends are especially interested in raising as much as possible to help with the funding of the new library. “We want to keep money rolling in,” said Evans, who added that the Friends will begin accepting books for the 2020 sale the week following this year’s event. The Friends are thankful for the help they receive from local Boy Scouts and members of the Cocalico Leos, Peace Church, and Cocalico football team. Organizers have arranged for the Keystone Bloodmobile to be in the church parking lot during sale hours on the morning of May 4 for anyone wishing to made a donation. Readers may learn more about library programs and services at www.adamstownarealibrary.org. Information about the Friends organization, including upcoming fundraisers, may be found at www.friendsaalibrary.net. Individuals who have questions about the sale may call 717-484-4200.
