Birdsboro Site Of New Farmers Market BY FRANCINE FULTON
omemade baked goods, fresh produce, artisan soaps, herbal products, soy candles, coffee, tea and locally produced honey and root beer were just some of the items offered for sale at the new Birdsboro Farmers Market held outdoors in Main Bird Park. The market, which opened on May 22, will be offered every other Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. through October by the Birdsboro Parks and Recreation Department. In addition to vendors, children’s activities and musical entertainment will be offered. On May 22, Threefold Blessing was featured. All local crafters and small businesses are invited to set up a booth at the farmers market; it is not necessary to be a resident of Birdsboro to participate. Those interested in selling items are asked to complete a vendor application. “I’m looking for producers. They have to grow it or make it,” explained Parks and Recreation board member Christen Thompson,
H
noting that shoppers should consider visiting the market when it first opens. “A lot of people showed up early. Some vendors sold out.” Board members also manned an information booth at the market and offered T-shirts for sale. “We heard some people say that it would be nice to have a farmers market in Birdsboro, and we ran with it,” Thompson
added. “It’s nice to see the neighbors gather and enjoy themselves.” Vendors will be asked to pay a fee to rent a space. “All the money we get goes right back into the parks,” said board president Bruce Godfrey. In addition to Main Bird Park, Birdsboro’s premier park is the Rustic Picnic Park, which is located along Hay Creek at 1314 Haycreek Road. See Farmers Market pg 5

Although the Chester County Special Olympics was canceled this year because of the pandemic, students with special needs in the Owen J. Roberts (OJR) School District were still able to enjoy fitnessbased competition, camaraderie and fun at their own Special Olympics-style event on May 14 in Wildcat Stadium at OJR High School. During the morning, students rotated through a series of stations designed to challenge their running, jumping and throwing skills. Among the stations were a 50-yard dash, a flying disc toss, jump rope, a standing long jump, a bean bag toss and a glow stick bottle toss. There was also a station where students were asked to kick a soccer ball for distance. Adapted activities were offered for students in wheelchairs. For example, at the soccer ball station, competitors were invited to toss the ball into the soccer net from a distance. At the jump rope station, small cones were used so students could maneuver around them in their wheelchairs.

There was also a wheelchair race. There were 65 participants from kindergarten through grade 12, who were all wearing their distinctive red OJR Special Olympics Tshirts. Parents and family members were invited to come out to cheer for the children and enjoy the festivities while watching from the grandstands. Providing Wheelchairs To Those In Need He recalled his favorite encounter, which involved meeting a young man in his 20s who was paralyzed from the waist down after an accident. The man was traveling along the side of the road in the gravel on a makeshift “scooter” made of planks and caster wheels. “He was laying on his belly and he was pushing himself along,” King said. “ We stopped the bus and asked him if he had a wheelchair at home and he said, ‘No, but I would love to have one of those three-wheeled ones.’ He had no idea that we had them on the bus. We got him the chair and I said to him, ‘You now own one.’ I cannot describe his happiness.” King added that he also carried toys on the bus, which he
was able to give to the young man for his children at home. King is very modest about his charitable work, but he hopes his story will encourage others to do the same. “The only thing I am interested in is to inspire someone else to do something to help people,” he stated. “It’s a good thing, and it’s very rewarding.”

As a soldier in the United States Army, Honey Brook resident Marlin King served in Vietnam from 1969 to 1970. However, that was not his only trip to the country in southeast Asia. In fact, King has traveled back to Vietnam 11 times, where he has given out nearly 1,000 wheelchairs to the disabled, including threewheeled chairs that are suitable for use on the road. King, who uses a wheelchair himself, is well known in the community for founding King Tables in 1974. The company manufactures picnic tables and outdoor lawn furniture. His charitable effort started when King invested in another out-of-state outdoor furniture company that failed. “When I thought about the money that I lost there, it bugged me, but one day I said, ‘Lord, if I ever get that money back, I will use every dollar to help handicapped people,’” King recalled. “One day I got a check in the mail for the whole (amount I invested). I did not even know it was coming. I decided that I was going (back) to Vietnam since that what was on my mind.” His first visit to Vietnam after that was in April of 2008. With the help of his late friend Paul Pinkerton, King found a wheelchair builder in Vietnam. “(Paul) was big on helping kids, and he had his own organization called Paul’s Kids. He was
my contact,” King explained. “We found a wheelchair manufacturer, and he designed the three-wheeled chair.” While in Vietnam, King would rent a 26-passenger bus, find a driver who spoke the language and fill the bus with wheelchairs for distribution. Some wheelchairs, including those that were modified for use by children, were give out to people who requested them on a website designed by a friend that King met while staying at a hotel in Vietnam. Other wheelchairs were given out randomly. “We had the best time traveling and giving out chairs,” King said, noting that his last visit was in 2019. “I knew that if I would not have met the people, it would not nearly have the same impact on me.”

Community Garden from pg 1 The community garden, which still has plots available, features raised bed gardens surrounded by a fence. “A landscaping company built (the garden) for us,” explained church member Karen Wellin, who spearheaded the effort to establish the garden at the site. “This is a cornfield, but the farmer who plants corn stopped (at the border of the garden). We also had the area around the garden tilled for us. Outside the enclosure we can plant a pumpkin patch, potatoes or corn.” Pastor Denny Emrick offered a prayer to dedicate the garden. “ We pray for those who will plant, cultivate and harvest food and flowers from this garden,” he stated. “We pray the harvest will be plentiful and those who consume it be blessed with good health. In Christ’s name we dedicate this garden.” One of the raised beds was claimed by the Sunday school class at Mount Carmel UMC, which is led by teacher Patti
Levengood. “(The children) picked green beans, lettuce and tomato plants (to plant in the garden),” Levengood shared. Those who plant vegetables in the garden may take home what they grow or share the harvest with others. “My goal has always been that surplus will go to local food banks,” Wellin noted. The garden will continue to be maintained throughout the summer. It will also be open for the planting of fall and winter crops. Levengood, an avid reader, was in charge of establishing the free library at the church, commissioning a friend to build the box. Prior to construction, Levengood tested the idea of a book sharing program. “Last summer we put a tote out (filled with books) and a lot of people used it,” she noted. The library box is dedicated in memory of William Baver, who was a lifelong member of
the church, where he taught Sunday school, served as a trustee and served on the administrative board. Emrick explained that the garden and the library are a way to connect the church with its neighbors. “These are just some efforts to say (to them), ‘We are here for you,’” he said. Following the ceremonies, church members enjoyed coffee, doughnuts and fellowship in the church’s outdoor pavilion. Mount Carmel UMC is located at 2203 Harmonyville Road, Elverson, just north of St. Peters Village. Currently, the Sunday service is offered at 10 a.m. in person and on
the church’s YouTube channel. Visitors can also remain in the parking lot and listen to the service on an FM radio station. The church holds an in-person men’s breakfast on the third Saturday of the month at 8 a.m. in the church fellowship hall. There is also a women’s virtual coffee held every Wednesday at 10 a.m. For more information, to make a prayer request or to obtain the link for the virtual coffee, visit www.mount carmelumc.org or www.face book.com/MountCarmel UMCStPeters. Among those who rented a booth at the event were representatives from St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Birdsboro, including Sharon Dragovich and Maryann Farnsworth, the wife of pastor Jim Farnsworth. On May 10, Reading United announced the signing of six local players to its USL League Two team for the 2021 season, pending league and federation approval. Mason Deeds, Dom Flowers, Jake Gosselin, Alex Hajj, Seth Kuhn, and Nate Stricker all hail from Berks County and will make up a core of the local club this year. Kuhn is the lone holdover from United’s 2019 season, while Flowers spent time with Reading United reserves the past two years. Deeds, a 6-1 defender from Topton, has played at Penn State University. Prior to his time with the Nittany Lions, he saw action in 18 matches for Georgetown. Deeds spent time in the New York Red Bulls Academy, seeing time in five games for New York Red Bulls II. He previously played in USL League Two with New York Red Bulls U23 in 2017, seeing 1,322 minutes in 2017 and 2018 across 23 games. Flowers is a defender/midfielder from Wyomissing who stars at Lehigh University. TYP will continue to work to support and staff existing programs that have restarted in recent months, but will not take on any new programs, according to board president Nicole Anderson. TYP is accepting funding requests and reviewing applications. Decisions will be made on a rolling basis through mid-2022. Awards will be directed to organizations demonstrating excep-
tional commitment to and expertise with trauma-sensitive yoga training and practice; an emphasis on programming that brings yoga to persons who are incarcerated, and ideally a continuation of the 200-hour Yoga Teacher Training program; community investment in the Philadelphia region and interest in building upon TYP programming with partner institutions that reopen; and an opportunity for TYP instructors and team members to participate in trainings and programs. TYP will prioritize organizations established and led by persons of color and persons re-entering their communities after incarceration. Founded in 2013, TYP offered trauma-sensitive, mindfulness-based yoga programs and education throughout the region, expanding to more than 65 partner locations in Pennsylvania and Delaware, with class attendance growing to 24,000 annually. Musser Foundation Supports Families Of Children With Cancer BY ANN MEAD ASH
When Akron resident Jeff Musser was first diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia in 1999 at the age of 42, doctors prescribed several months of chemotherapy with the possibility of a bone marrow transplant following remission. “At that time, insurance didn’t cover bone marrow transplants,” recalled Musser. “A bunch of my friends got together, and they raised about $35,000 for me.” After Musser underwent 28 months of chemotherapy, doctors at The Johns Hopkins Hospital decided not to perform the bone marrow transplant. “When I got well after two years, I had $35,000,” said Musser, who also had a heightened awareness of the situations faced by the families of children with the same type of cancer he had. “My cancer was a childhood leukemia,” he said. “For kids it’s 80% curable, but for adults it’s 20% curable.” Although the high cure rate is good news for families whose children are diagnosed with the disease, Musser saw the toll it took on parents. “I was receiving a lot of my chemo with kids and their parents and hearing about how they were trying to make ends meet,” he said, adding that often one parent stops working to care for the child. “A lightbulb went off, and I thought, ‘I will use this $35,000 for that.’” Because the initial funds were raised by friends of Musser who held a golf tournament, he decided to hold another. This year, the foundation will hold its 20th golf tournament at Foxchase Golf Club on Wednesday, June 23. A fundraising Cadillac dinner
Green Project Grants Awarded
will be held at the Lancaster Country Club on Friday, Sept. 24. In 2001, the Jeff Musser Foundation became an official nonprofit. Working with social workers at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, Penn State Hershey, and Nemours in Wilmington, Del., the organization works to alleviate financial obligations that can become burdensome. “We try to keep (the family) in their home, so we make mortgage payments, rents, utilities, and car payments,” said Musser. Larry Shirk, who helps the organization fundraise, said that the hospital social workers who contact Musser with information about families that need help are crucial to the system. Musser contacts referred families by phone when he is allowed and then sends requests to the organization’s sixmember board. Larry’s wife, Judi, acts as administrator, getting checks to families in need. Over the last year or so, communication between Musser, board members, and the Shirks has been done electronically so the work of the foundation could continue. “After this year, we will have given out $2 million,” said Musser, who noted that donations were down significantly in 2020 due to COVID-19 restrictions. “The best way to help is to visit our website and donate money,” shared Musser, adding that the organization is happy to accept checks. He pointed out that administrative costs are negligible. “We don’t take any costs out,” he said. “If you give us $100, (that) $100 goes to the families.” Readers who would like to know more about the organization and its work may visit https://jeffmusser foundation.org/ or call 717-673-6333.
The Sierra Club - Lancaster Group has awarded its Green Project grants to 11 more Lancaster County organizations, each of which has shown a need for support of a venture that promotes sustainability, expands environmental awareness, and improves green infrastructure. With this latest round of awards, ranging up to $500, a total of 63 Lancaster County organizations have received green grants from the group over the past six years. Organizations receiving the grants, along with their projects, include BethDenny, operating as Indian Market Hives, for planting of various species of wild flowers and other flora to determine their effect on attracting native pollinators; Landis Woods Nature Preschool, buying a vermicomposter and composting worms to start a vermicomposting program that will supply the preschool’s established organic garden with nutrient-rich fertilizer; and The Edible Classroom, underwriting fees for several first- to fifth-grade students to attend a summer camp at Penn Manor’s Conestoga Elementary School. Also, Lafayette Elementary School, School District of Lancaster, is creating a rain garden in its enclosed greenspace/outdoor classroom that would absorb moisture in a swampy area and make it more user-friendly. Burrowes Elementary School, School District of Lancaster, is improving its current outdoor space by installing a rain barrel to conserve water. Immerse International, Millersville, is purchasing rain barrels, seeping hoses, and other parts for use in supplying more water to its Prayer Garden.
Homefields Incorporated is buying a corrugated steel pipe to shunt rain water that drains through the property (currently causing erosion problems) under a farm lane, and The Green Team, a student organization at Lancaster Mennonite High School, is planting native-to-Pennsylvania flora in areas of the school’s campus that have been deforested either naturally or intentionally by construction. Arbor Place Inc., Lancaster, is purchasing raised table beds, kits, soil, and compost for the creation of an outside S.T.E.M. classroom. Also, The Coalition for Smart Growth, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster, is supporting the Coalition and the Lancaster Housing Opportunity Partnership that will host its Places2040 Summit in April 2022. Historic Poole Forge is completing its rain garden area that was established four years ago. Proposals for receiving a grant were evaluated on criteria such as environmental objective, unique aspect of the project, quality of submission, and how the Sierra Club Lancaster Group might be involved. Awarded once a year, the grants are funded primarily with money generated through the group’s annual Polar Bear 5K Trail Run/Hike. The deadline to apply for the next cycle of awards is Thursday, March 31, 2022. Recipients will be announced on Earth Day, Friday, April 22, 2022.
