CCWS Holds Diaper Giveaway By Francine Fulton
Chester County Women’s Services (CCWS), a pregnancy care medical center, held a free diaper giveaway on May 13 at its Coatesville office. The giveaway was open to anyone in the community in need of diapers and wipes for their children due to the effects of COVID-19.
On the day of the giveaway, CCWS staff members followed social distancing guidelines. “(People) drove up and popped their trunks (and the diapers were placed inside),” said Maloney. “For walkers, we had a table set up where we would place the bag six feet away for contactless pickup.” CCWS also plans to host diaper giveaways at its West Chester and Kennett Square locations. “It felt so good to help the community,” Maloney shared. CCWS is a nonprofit, faith-based organization that helps women and their families who are facing unplanned pregnancies to make lifeaffirming choices. All services are 100% free and offered in both English and Spanish. Families are supported physically, emotionally and financially through basic pregnancy care, parenting education classes, peer counseling, a family advocacy program and community referrals. Maloney reported that CCWS has remained open through the coronavirus pandemic. “We are seeing our clients virtually via telehealth and using Zoom for educational classes,” she said. “For those with medical (needs), we are still offering in-office medical appointments. We are still out there helping.” CCWS has offices at 1028 E. Lincoln Highway in Coatesville, 139 W. Market St. in West Chester and 203 S. Walnut St. in Kennett Square. For more information, readers may visit www.ccwsmedical info.org or call 610-383-0930.
Those who were interested in receiving the free diapers were asked to call CCWS in advance during normal business hours to reserve the size diapers that they needed. The event was promoted on CCWS social media sites, and information was distributed through flyers that were given out by partner organizations, such as the Community, Youth, and Women’s Alliance (CYWA); Gaudenzia; and The Bridge Academy. “In total, 100 families received this free service, which equated to 6,897 diapers,” reported Michelle Maloney, CCWS development director. The community was invited to contribute to the effort by donating money that was then used by CCWS to purchase the diapers. “We have a COVID emergency fund on our website, so people gave monetary donations through that,” Maloney explained. “We also have an Amazon baby registry and a Walmart wish list. People could go on and select what is on the registries and have it mailed directly to CCWS. We did not take physical donations (of diapers), so people could make a donation without contact. It was a tangible way to help.”
Chester County Women’s Services held a free diaper giveaway on May 13 at its Coatesville office. During the event, staff members distributed more than 6,800 diapers.

Each year, fifth-graders from throughout the Delaware Valley, including Berks and Chester counties, create three-dimensional homes to compete in Habitat for Humanity of Chester County’s (HfHCC) “Build a House … Build a Dream” contest. This year, however, because of the coronavirus pandemic, contest organizers had to make the 17th annual event virtual. Instead of bringing their model homes to Church Farm School in Exton on March 23, participating students were invited to submit a video or photo of their construction projects, along with a 100-word description explaining the inspiration behind their designs. “The event was scheduled for March 23, and the stay-at-home order went into effect on March 16. That Friday, (March 20), we made the decision not to have the event publicly,” said Becki Patterson, HfHCC marketing and communications manager, noting that the event regularly draws approximately 350 people and more than 150 entries. See Virtual Competition pg 2
Fifth-graders throughout the area, including Keira Tolbert, were invited to submit entries to this year’s virtual “Build a House … Build a Dream” contest sponsored by Habitat for Humanity of Chester County. For her entry, Keira designed a treehouse.

how much effort went into the home and what their inspiration looks like,” Patterson said, There is no cost for students to participate, but the event is a fundraiser for HfHCC. Local businesses sponsor the design competition, including presenting sponsor Fox & Roach/Trident Charities, and they are listed in the event program. This year, the students’ work was recognized on the video, but no prizes were awarded. “Typically, we have three winners, but we did not want to limit anyone based on technology. Some submitted photos and some videos,” said Patterson. “(Instead), we celebrated the creativity and all the hard work people put in. “ She added that HfHCC was also able give away prizes to student participants, who each received a ticket to be entered into a random drawing. In a typical year, students are present along with their projects while judges, who are local architects, engineers and HfHCC volunteers, view the houses and ask questions. were questions about whether the flags would be placed along with the flowers and who would place them. “Normally the Boy and Cub Scouts from New Holland come over and put out the flowers (and the flags), said Eberly. “This year, (since the children) can’t go to school or play ball, we decided not to do that. To be sure that veterans at the 13 cemeteries were not forgotten on Memorial Day, a small delegation led by Lamar Martin, Mike Martin, and Chet Gordon visited the cemeteries for prayers. A bugler was scheduled to accompany them to play at each location. “Next year, we hope to have something big at the New Holland Park, said Eberly. Gene Eberly arrived at the St. Stephen Reformed Church cemetery a little after 9 a.m. on May 23 with several bundles of small American flags in his car. He spoke briefly to Lamar Martin, who was driving a truck loaded with red geraniums to the location, before dividing the bundles to be placed in designated areas of the cemetery. At about 10 a.m., area veterans Eberly knows from St. Stephen arrived to help mark the graves of veterans with the flags and geraniums. The 2020 New Holland Memorial Day Pilgrimage and the ceremony at the New Holland Park were canceled in early May. Members of the ELANCO United Veterans Council of New Holland felt that it would be impossible to hold the event and maintain COVID-19 pandemic restrictions. “(The pilgrimage) started on May 20, 1922, said Eberly, who confirmed that this is the first year the full pilgrimage has not been held. “When it first started, it was just the two cemeteries, Trinity Lutheran and St.
Stephen, Eberly noted. “As it went on, they added the others to make it up to 13. The 13 cemeteries that are usually visited during the pilgrimage, in addition to Trinity and St. Stephen, are located at Bowmansville Memorial Park, Bridgeville Evangelical Congregational Church, Cedar Grove Presbyterian Church, Evangelical United Methodist Church (UMC), Groffdale Cemetery, Ranck’s UMC, St. John’s Center Lutheran Church, Terre Hill Memorial Park, Voganville Cemetery, Weaverland Mennonite Church, and Zeltenreich Reformed Church. Eberly recalled that in the past, the event included a procession on Main Street by the participants representing area veterans organizations, such as the American Legion as well as Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the New Holland Band. “When they used to do the parades after they visited all the cemeteries, they started at the Evangelical United Methodist Church, and they marched to the St. Stephen cemetery for the ceremony, said

Chester County Commissioners (from left) Michelle Kichline, Marian Moskowitz and Josh Maxwell gather by the newly planted “tree of hope” honoring Chester County’s fight against COVID-19 on the 50th anniversary of Earth Day on April 22.

residents’ way of life. The species of tree planted in Chester County’s Exton Park was a serviceberry, specifically an Amelanchier arborea, a Pennsylvania native ornamental tree that will bloom each year with small white flowers arranged in clusters. Chester County Parks and Open Space Preservation staff members selected the serviceberry tree especially for the occasion. In addition to the cluster of white flowers that bloom each spring, its leaves turn vivid shades of red and gold in the fall. It also produces berry-like fruit that ripens in June and is loved by birds.

To commemorate Earth Day 2020, the Chester County commissioners had originally planned to hand out hundreds of small trees to county residents for planting to celebrate Earth Day’s 50th anniversary. However, their plans changed in light of the coronavirus pandemic. On April 22, the official 50th anniversary of Earth Day, Chester County Commissioners Marian Moskowitz, Josh Maxwell and Michelle Kichline planted just one tree instead. The “tree of hope” was planted to forever commemorate Chester County’s fight against the coronavirus global pandemic that impacted county

Animal House Project from pg 1 The charity golf outing will open with registration and continental breakfast at 8 a.m. Tee-off with a scramble start will begin at 9 a.m. The registration fee includes range balls, green fees, use of a cart, a swag bag, breakfast and lunch. There will also be cash prizes awarded for a hole-in-one and a shoot-out contest, as well as an opportunity to win gift baskets. Yoshi, the pet pantry’s spokespuppy, may be on hand at the event to greet golfers. “Yoshi was there last year, but we had to take him back (home) because it was so hot,” said MaryBeth
Yannessa, board president, noting that 75 golfers took part in the first-time event last August. “Even though it was 98 degrees, everyone stayed, and we had a great time. If the weather is nice, Yoshi will be on hand (this year).” Readers may learn more about Yoshi at www.facebook.com/ YoshiTheWoolyAkita. Both groups of four and individuals are invited to register to play golf. Nongolfers are also welcome to attend to enjoy the meals and to enter the prize drawings. To register for the golf tournament or to obtain
sponsorship information, readers may visit www.animalhouse project.org or www.face book.com/AnimalHouseProject1. This year, organizers were unsure if the second annual golf tournament would take place because of the coronavirus pandemic and the stay-at-home order. “The date was pre-set up, but we held off (on making a final decision) because we didn’t know what would happen. Once golf courses opened up, we decided to go ahead with the golf tournament,” said Yannessa. Animal House Project helps struggling families feed and care for their companion pets to keep them out of shelters and rescues.

Pet food distributions take place at the pantry in Pottstown on the first Saturday of each month from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. “It’s a drive-through now. People don’t get out and don’t open their windows, and we load their cars,” Yannessa explained. She said that there has been an increased need for food at the pantry since the COVID-19 pandemic began. Those who would like to help may donate dry and canned cat and dog food at the pantry, which is located at the intersection of Hanover Street and Cedarville Road in North Coventry Township. Donations can be placed in an outdoor bin located on-site. The pantry also accepts food for smaller animals such as guinea pigs and rabbits, along with financial donations. The yard sale on June 20 will also benefit the pantry. The event will be held rain or shine. “We will have new and gently used pet supplies, including dog toys, dog beds, dog clothes and life vests, crates, food bowls and bird cages,” said Yannessa, noting that items have been donated by the community. She also announced that the pet food pantry is scheduled to move to a new and larger facility in September. For more information about the pantry, the yard sale or the golf tournament, readers may visit the previously mentioned websites, call 484-949-8329 or email events@animalhouseproject.org.

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) recently announced that it will use existing photos on file for customers who renew their driver’s license and identification card. All customers who renew their driver’s license or photo ID card online or through the mail will receive a new product using the most recent photo of that individual that exists in PennDOT’s system. No camera cards will be issued to these customers, and they will receive their new product by mail within 15 days. The renewal process is complete when the final product is received. Non-commercial driver’s license and photo ID card holders may renew their product online, providing that there are no corrections or changes other than a change of address, by visiting www.dmv.pa.gov. Both noncommercial and commercial drivers may renew their products through the mail. Individuals who renewed their product on or before May
10 will receive a camera card in the mail and will need to visit a PennDOT Photo License Center to obtain an updated photo. Additionally, non-U.S. citizens must also visit a driver’s license center in person to complete a transaction. For a list of reopened locations, readers may visit www.dmv.pa.gov. Expiration dates on driver’s licenses, photo ID cards, learner’s permits and camera cards scheduled to expire from March 16 through Sunday, May 31, have been extended until Tuesday, June 30. A Pennsylvania driver’s license is valid for four years, expiring on the day after the driver’s birthday. PennDOT will continue to send an invitation to renew to each driver three months prior to license expiration. Individuals age 65 or older have the option of renewing their license every two years, instead of the standard four years. If a customer’s license is nearing expiration and he or she was planning to get a REAL ID at their time of renewal, they can renew their license or ID and get a standard, “not for REAL ID purposes” product. The issuance of REAL IDs is currently suspended to prevent the spread of COVID-19. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security has extended the REAL ID enforcement deadline until Friday, Oct. 1, 2021. Once REAL ID issuance has resumed, customers with a nonREAL ID product can upgrade to a REAL ID and their new product will include any time remaining on their current product, plus an additional four years. Customers will not “lose” time for which they have already paid, and after the initial

Spring Cleanup Tips Offered For many, spring is the season that symbolizes new beginnings. As spring approaches this year, however, home and business owners across the country find themselves coping with an unprecedented situation, including limits on travel, shopping, activities, and interaction with other people in general. The residential-friendly dumpster professionals at Bin There Dump That franchises say the social distancing restrictions may offer property owners an unexpected opportunity to make a new beginning in their home or business. Whether people’s commutes have been shortened to a walk down the hall or people find themselves confined to their home with time on their hands, a spring cleaning project is a great way to put that unexpected spare time to good use. Warmer weather means people will soon need access to gardening tools, planters, and patio furniture along with bicycles, racquets, balls, bats, water toys, and more. By cleaning out the garage, porch, shed, basement, or other storage area now, tools and toys will be easy to access as soon as current restrictions are lifted. Bin There Dump That experts offer the following tips to help home and business owners create and carry out a storage area spring cleaning plan, no matter what is hanging, standing, stacked, or propped up in their way. 1. Commit. Individuals should set a date for their cleanup project, and they may consider arranging for a dumpster rental. Dumpster consultants will help people choose the size they will need. A dumpster with a double door feature makes it easy to walk - rather than toss - large,
bulky items in. If a homeowner thinks he or she may need help filling a dumpster, the homeowner can consider sharing the rental cost with a neighbor. 2. Divide and conquer. Individuals should look around their storage spaces and make a list of the items they are going to donate, sell, replace, or toss. They may consider labeling the items instead of making a list. 3. Plan the space. People should reserve floor space in garages and sheds for heavy equipment, like a car or riding mower, and for easy access to stored gear. For everything else, get creative with steel racks, shelving, overhead lofts, and ways to hang things from the ceiling of the space. 4. Out with the old. Those renting a dumpster are advised to get started discarding items soon after the receptacle arrives. Items that will be kept or sold or donated should be placed in temporary holding spots. 5. Spruce up and set up. Once the clean-out is complete, the storage space or spaces should be swept, scrubbed, and even painted, and homeowners may install new storage solutions. Then the storage plan can be put into play and everything from the “keep” pile can be put in a place where it will be easy to find and easy to reach. Individuals should not give into the temptation to return items in the “sell” or “donate” piles to their newly organized space. While it may not be possible to schedule a yard sale alone or with neighbors in the near future, items can be sold online or arrangements can be made to have them picked up by a charitable organization. For more spring cleanup tips, readers may visit www.binthere dumpthatusa.com.
