Twin Valley High School Celebrates Graduation BY FRANCINE FULTON
The Twin Valley High School (TVHS) Class of 2021 celebrated its graduation on June 5 during commencement ceremonies held at FirstEnergy Stadium in Reading. The event featured a series of speakers, a review of the class’ successes through the years and reflections about what life was like as a high school student during a pandemic.
The valedictorian was Malavika Nair, the daughter of Lakshmi Unnikrishnan and Pradeep Prabhakar of Morgantown, and the salutatorian was Conner Lawler, the son of John and Helene Lawler of Elverson. Conner opened the graduation ceremony by comparing the senior class’s high school journey to the game Dungeons and Dragons. “(In Dungeons and Dragons) there are three main adventures, heroes and a grand finale,” Conner said. See TVHS pg 4
Honey Brook Borough council member Rich Florio (left) and borough clerk Tricia Swinty invite the community to take part in the Heroes of Honey Brook Borough Military Banner Program.
Banners Honor Honey Brook Heroes oney Brook Borough residents who want to commemorate a loved one who served in the United States armed forces are invited to sponsor a banner that will be displayed along Route 322 (Horseshoe Pike) as part of the Heroes of Honey Brook Borough Military Banner Program. The banners, which measure 24 inches by 48 inches, include photos of the service members, list their branch and period of service and mention any awards or honors they have received, such as the Purple Heart, Silver Star or Bronze Star. A fee is charged to sponsor the double-sided banner, and the sponsor or sponsoring agency’s name appears on the bottom of the banner.
H
The first set of banners was installed in the borough in August of 2020. The banners were put in place by Bill Ford, public works director, with the help of Tel Hai Retirement Community volunteers, who provided a scissors lift to hang the banners. “We have 15 banners (currently on display). They are on Route 322 on the east side of Route 10,” noted Tricia Swinty, borough clerk. “(People depicted on the banner) have to be a current or past resident of the borough.” She noted that the banners will be kept in place for two years and then returned to the family or sponsor. The effort came about after borough council member Rich Florio heard about the program when he was part of the Western Chester County Council of Governments.
“We got the idea from Atglen, who has a robust banner program,” he noted. Local businesses and nonprofit organizations may also sponsor a banner. “September Farms decided to donate the money for one of our applicants,” Florio said, noting that the banner will depict a World War II veteran who was recommended by the Honey Brook American Legion. Applications to sponsor a banner are available at www.honeybrook borough.net or by visiting Honey Brook Borough Hall, 71 Pequea Ave., during its hours of operation, on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. A sample banner is currently on display at the borough hall. For more information, contact Swinty at 610-273-2020 or info@hbboro.net.

Local musical acts that will perform throughout the evening will include Ring of Fire, Carol Ruffner and Company and Dawson Estes. The West Chester Swing Kings, known for their repertoire of music by artists such as Glenn Miller, Woody Herman, Tommy Dorsey, Count Basie and Duke Ellington, will conclude the performances. The fireworks will begin after the group’s last song. Food will be offered by Stampede Barbecue. “They will be the major food vendor,” said Esther Prosser, a member of the Elverson Day Committee, noting ice cream and other food items will also be offered for sale. For children, there will be face painting, T-shirt decorating, a moon bounce and a petting zoo. “Twin Valley Fire Department will bring their ladder and rescue truck,” Prosser noted. Attendees will also have an opportunity to enter in the fire department’s
drawing for a Harley-Davidson motorcycle. Children who complete the various activities in the park can have a bingo card stamped to earn tickets they can use to enter a drawing to win a new bicycle. The Elverson Trails Committee in conjunction with the Chester County Planning Commission will have a booth and provide free bike helmets. Supplies will be limited. Visitors to the park will also be able to pet and hold adoptable kittens from Calla’s Critter Rescue, as well as adoptable puppies. In addition, vendors will be on hand offering items for sale. According to Prosser, the tradition of holding Elverson Day in the Park began in 2011, when Elverson residents celebrated the borough’s centennial by gathering at Livingood Park on a Saturday at the end of June. The event has been held each
year since with the exception of 2020. For more information about Elverson Day in the Park, including cancellation information, visit www.elversonboro.org. To kick off Elverson Day in the Park, Anchored Ministries, a local charity that provides food, clothing and necessities to people in need, will hold the Elverson 5K and 1 Mile Fun Walk/Run, which will also include virtual options. The in-person portion of the event will begin at 9 a.m. at Livingood Park. Awards will be presented to the overall male and female winners of the 5K, as well as the top two female and male winners in various age groups. Summer Vibes At PA Beaches
Library from pg 2
Sick of hours of traffic heading to Maryland or Jersey shores? Not to mention crowded beaches and boardwalk shops that make a big dent in your wallet. You don’t have to go down the shore to enjoy a beach vacation. Pennsylvania offers an entirely different beach experience. More than likely, if you live in PA, you’re within an hour or two of a beach. Most of the lakefront beaches in the commonwealth are in our pristine state parks, but you’ll find private and public beaches throughout the state. Thirty-five of Pennsylvania’s 121 state parks have beaches that are typically open and free to the public for swimming from late May to mid-September. Many of these beaches have a swimat-your-own-risk policy. They are generally open from 8 a.m. to sunset, daily, but may have adjusted schedules, so check the website before hitting the road. You’ll find links to all the state park beaches on www.townlively.com/summer -vibes-at-pa-beaches. •Bald Eagle State Park, Howard •Black Moshannon State Park, Philipsburg •Chapman State Park, Clarendon •Hills Creek State Park, Wellsboro •Little Pine State Park, Waterville •Lyman Run State Park, Galeton •Ole Bull State Park, Cross Fork •Parker Dam State Park, Penfield •Poe Valley State Park, Coburn •Raymond B. Alex talked about attending school virtually. “Who would have thought you could be in class in your underwear, and no one would know?” he asked, adding, “Although the pandemic has affected us negatively, the diploma we hold in our hands today shows that with dedication, passion and perseverance, anything is possible.” TVHS principal William Clements listed the accomplishments of the Class of 2021, including awards and honors won by students in FFA and Technology Students of America, being able to present a school musical and other performances despite the pandemic and the achievements of student artists and student-athletes. “Against remarkable odds,

Eye Drop 2021 from pg 1
More than 100 people took part in Eye Drop 2019 to raise money and awareness for VisionCorps.
Sortland said she is committed to the feat despite her fear of heights as part of an effort to raise funds and awareness for VisionCorps after the nonprofit organization helped her when she became visually impaired. Sortland’s vision was damaged after she suffered a subarachnoid hemorrhage, a condition that often results in death or significant impairments. “I became visually disabled a couple of years ago. (As a consequence), I was cutting my fingers, burning my hands and I almost got hit by a car. I could not read emails or pay bills,” said Sortland, whose coordinator of care recommended that she contact VisionCorps for help. “I was really lucky that I finally gave VisionCorps a call. They gave me a caseworker and I told her about all the things that I was struggling with. She said that I would be OK and get my independence back and (find) a new way to live.” VisionCorps helped Sortland learn to overcome the obstacles that she encountered on a daily basis. “They came in and taught me how to use technology, cook and organize. Someone taught me to use my cane not only at home, but anywhere I needed to go. They offered me the world,” she stated. “If I can’t figure out how to do something, they can help me.” The Eye Drop was canceled in 2020 during the pandemic, but in 2019 120 people took part in the event, some with vision loss and some sighted, according to Carol Gifford, VisionCorps community relations specialist. “(Eye Drop) is run by a group of professionals,” Gifford noted. “They are in charge of making sure the entire process is safe.”
Natanya Sortland will take part in Eye Drop 2021, rappelling down the side of the Holiday Inn in Lancaster.
Although Sortland’s limited vision is blurry, she will be aware of the building’s height. “The first time the event came around, I said, ‘No way,’ but (this year) I realized that I have to do this because I need to make sure that other people get this help,” said Sortland. Sortland plans to dress as Lady Liberty since the event is close to the July 4 holiday and to represent her newly independent life. “I will not (back out),” she said. “My determination to get help (to the people who need it) will be stronger than my fear.” People who would like to financially support Sortland’s effort may visit https://give.visioncorps .net/natanya for more information. VisionCorps’ Eye Drop event will be held at the Holiday Inn Lancaster, 26 E. Chestnut St., beginning at 9 a.m. All proceeds will help fund VisionCorps’ prevention, rehabilitation and employment services, which are offered to those who are blind or have low vision in Adams, Chester, Lancaster, Lebanon and York counties. There are still open spots to join and rappel. For more information and to register, visit www.EyeDrop2021.org.

Chester County K-9 Achieves Police Canine Therapy Certification requirements. This certification is the first for law enforcement therapy dogs in the United States, according to Melinda Ruopp, national secretary of the USPCA, the largest governing body of police canines and an organization whose standards are accepted in federal court. She noted that therapy K-9s provide comfort and support in
prisons, in courtrooms and for victims in interview rooms. “We felt they needed certification for tasks specific to dogs in law enforcement. Tests needed to ensure that uses of dogs are policy driven,” said Ruopp. “There are civilian organizations that provide certifications for other therapy dogs, but law enforcement K-9s perform different tasks
in different situations and environments.” Pickell reported on her canine’s reaction to the event: “Marley is unfazed at the prospects of celebrity status after achieving this first certification. For him, it’s another happy day of work at the office.” Sgt. Janis Pickell and Comfort K-9 Marley

Comfort K-9 Marley and his handler, Sgt. Janis Pickell of the Chester County Sheriff ’s Office (CCSO), recently became the nation’s first canine team to achieve Police Service Therapy /Comfort K-9 certification through the United States Police Canine Association Inc. (USPCA). The accreditation incorporates the first national standards and testing of a police comfort dog’s temperament and skills, as well as handler knowledge. This past winter, Pickell wondered if there was a way to determine if she and Marley were providing the best service possible. That same week, she was contacted by certified K-9 trainer Sgt. Paul Bryant Jr., head of the CCSO’s K-9 unit. Bryant sent Pickell an article about a new, national certification program and encouraged her to apply. She did, and the 18-year veteran of the CCSO and her English black Labrador partner began a new regimen. Refining skills of bonding and obedience practiced since they became partners in January 2020, Pickell helped Marley learn to encounter and respond calmly to people with diverse life situations and in noisy spaces. The entire CCSO got into the act, under the expertise of Bryant. Six fellow K-9handler partners from the award-winning CCSO K-9 team and the civil office staff helped Marley socialize with other animals, strangers and bystanders. A deputy in a wheelchair and a civilian staff member using a knee scooter after surgery acclimated Marley to mobility devices. Visits to the CCSO’s squad room taught Marley about different levels of noise and activity. Visits to eating areas gave him practice ignoring food that was not his. He became accustomed to riding an elevator. In each situation, Marley honed skills and acquired fans. The CCSO quickly became an important law enforcement agency in the USPCA initiative. Now that the first program is over, Bryant is providing feedback to help the USPCA fine-tune

Basketball Player Courting Success At Berks Catholic
Provided as a community service by this civic minded publication and the Association of Free Community Publications
In March of 2018, the Community Courier featured an article on Immaculate Conception Academy (ICA) fifthgrader Caraline Herb of Birdsboro, who at the age of 11 won the Pennsylvania State Championship Free Throw Contest presented by the Knights of Columbus. To achieve this feat, she faced off against the girl winner from every district throughout the state. Today, at the age of 16, Caraline, who will be a junior this fall at Berks Catholic High School (BCHS) in Reading, is continuing her success on the basketball court. This past year she set the school record by scoring 12 3-pointers in one game, beating the previous record of 7.

other brother, Janssen, practices with me and shows me how to work on my form.” Caraline, who noted that her favorite NBA player is Steph Curry, said she plans to continue breaking records this upcoming school year. “I hope to play Division I and to beat my 12 3-point record. I would like to be a part of my BC team reaching higher than the districts level,” she added.

season I have practices almost every day or games. If I do not have games or practice, I am always practicing outside at my house,” she noted. The schedule will continue this summer since Caraline is playing with the Lehigh Valley Fever team, part of the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU). Currently, she practices with her AAU team on Mondays and Wednesdays, plays games at Spooky Nook Sports in Manheim on Tuesdays and attends open gym at BCHS on Thursdays. Weekends are generally reserved for tournament play. Caraline credits her success in basketball to a strict practice schedule, as well as support and encouragement from BCHS coach Bob Birmingham and her brother, Janssen. “It’s a lot of hard work,” she said, adding, “Coaches throughout the years have taught me a lot. I did not know how to play defense in high school, which coach Birmingham taught me, and my

“I had 12 3-pointers in my game against Reading High, where I went 12 for 15 from the 3-point line,” Caraline said. “I had 38 points in this game, which was my career high and a Berks Catholic single-game point record. This past season, I led the county with 60 3pointers. My high school team won the county championship this year.” She was also selected as a member of the AllBerks girls’ basketball team and won Most Valuable Player (MPV) for BCHS this season. After graduating from ICA in 2018, Caraline was named a member of the BCHS Saints as a varsity player during her freshman year. She immediately made an impact with her 3-point throwing skills. “I had 40 3-pointers my freshman year, and last year, I was sixth in 3-pointers for the season,” she noted. “This past season, I led the county with 60 3-pointers.” Caraline noted that play in 2020 was particularly challenging because players had to wear masks because of the pandemic. Games were also halted for a two-week period of time. “We had to wear masks at practice, too, so that prepared us for the games,” she said. “It was not awful, but we could have done without them.” Caraline maintains a rigorous schedule during the school year. “During my high school
