Friends Association for the Care and Protection of Children received a grant award from the Chester County Fund for Women and Girls (CCFWG). The grant will be used for direct program expenses for the three programs in the Homeless to Independence Initiative. Friends Association helps each family build on its existing strengths and helps it identify education and services it needs to successfully transition from poverty and homelessness to permanent housing and financial self-sufficiency. Friends Association works with all families in Chester County in accessing emergency benefits, permanent housing, education and assistance. A case manager immediately begins working with families to assist them in accessing emergency benefits, housing coordination and employment assistance. The $10,000 grant will be used for direct expenses in support of the three programs: Emergency Family Shelter, Homeless Prevention (including the new long-term case management program) and Outreach to Homeless Families. CCFWG was started in 1996 in response to the vital needs and issues that affect women, girls and their families in Chester County. Since its inception, it has awarded more than $3 million in grants to 71 organizations addressing critical needs. Through grant making and educational programs, CCFWG strategically works to foster the economic freedom, well-being and security of women and their families who live and work in the diverse communities throughout the county. The CCFWG aims to lead and unite the community through philanthropy and advocacy to ensure that women and girls have the opportunities and resources to thrive. Friends Association promotes the independence of families with children by providing shelter, programs and services in Chester County. In 2017, Friends Association assisted more than 124 families and 247 children.

Concert from pg 1 the Park series. Across the Pond features Dan Diviney on whistle and bodhran (Irish drum); Mike Morrison, who plays the guitar and mandolin; and Chuck Krepley on the fiddle. Diviney and Morrison will provide vocals. Also featured during the concert will be traditional Irish dancers from the Hooley School of Irish Dance. “They will do their own dances to recorded music, and they will also get up and dance whenever we play something that is danceable,” Diviney explained. Another special guest during the evening will be champion Irish step dancer Emily Warren. Warren’s ceilidh dance team placed 24th out of 700 competing teams in the world championship in April 2017 in Ireland. “She is fun to watch and has a special talent in getting members of the audience to join her to learn a few dance steps,” Diviney noted. This is the band’s third appearance as part of the Honey Brook concert series. “We love to play Honey Brook,” Diviney remarked. “Each time we played, we had a very nice crowd. When we are on break, we get to talk to people. We really enjoy playing there.” Diviney said the concert will be familyfriendly. “Our music appeals to all ages,” he said. “You may find it hard to not tap your feet and clap along to the music. It’s rare to find someone who doesn’t like it.” The band, which formed when Diviney discovered the other two band members who were playing with other groups, has been playing together for more than six years. “We are having fun. (The band) has really taken off,” he said. “We do a lot of weddings and festivals, and we do concerts similar to the one in Honey Brook,” Diviney noted. “We played this year for Nora Roberts, the author, who had an Irish ceilidh (party) where she lives in Boonsboro, Maryland. We will be playing in July at the Endless Mountain Music Festival, a two-week festival in Wellsboro, (Pa.), and New York, along with bands from China, Russia and Korea. This is our

The Pennsylvania Treasury Department is currently holding more than $3.2 billion in unclaimed property, with about one in 10 residents eligible to recoup that property. Unclaimed property is any financial asset that has been left inactive by the owner for a period of three years or more. The most common kinds of unclaimed property include savings and checking accounts, uncashed checks, unclaimed insurance benefits, and items abandoned in forgotten safe deposit boxes. The amounts can range from a few dollars to a
few thousand dollars. The treasury is required to advertise the names and addresses of unclaimed property owners in their last known county of residence, but only if the property is valued in excess of $250. The names and addresses of unclaimed property owners appear in the newspaper only once per year, even though they may be owed multiple pieces of property. State officials are also cautioning individuals to be wary of services or “finders” See Treasury pg 8

People were provided recipes for the dish and could purchase all items needed to make the coleslaw in a convenient box to take home. “The individuals doing the recipes are volunteers,” noted market manager Roberta Cosentino, who was accompanied at the library by market assistant manager Alex Steinmetz and other staff members and volunteers. The Fresh2You program began in June of 2016 as a way to offer fresh produce to underserved areas of the county. The Mobile Market vehicle, a former delivery truck, was retrofitted with a generator, a sink and other components to make it work as a mobile food truck. “The back third of our truck is a refrigerator and it is full of produce, so we are always refilling the bins,” said Cosentino. “This is our third year, so we are definitely an embedded part of the community.” She noted that in 2017, Fresh2You piloted a Fruit and Vegetable Prescription program. “Many of the people have prescriptions from their health care provider for various amounts (of produce) depending on the size of their household,” noted Cosentino. “They can purchase fruits and vegetables (to fill) their prescriptions.” The Mobile Market opened on June 12 The Fresh2You Mobile Market offers a wide selection and will be stationed at sites throughout the county through Saturday, Nov. 17. Indoor Guard from pg 1 guard coach. Bauer explained that Amber, who had competed on a team at a different school, petitioned her last November to have an indoor guard at TVHS. “She learned that I was the coach of the Twin Valley Middle School color guard and asked if I would like to have the honor of coaching for the (high school) indoor guard,” said Bauer. “I gladly accepted, and we started within weeks.” The group began rehearsing in December of 2017, and the competition season ran from January through May. The girls competed at venues in Lancaster, Dallastown and other towns, capturing first-place honors at each event. Bauer explained that indoor color guard, also called winter guard, is similar to what audiences see during halftime shows at local high school football games. “It is very close, but the choreography is done on the gym floor,” she said. “We use rifles and flags, and there is one part where we use performance sabers. It is fun to watch.” At competitions, the Twin Valley group competed in the Senior Small category. “They break the competition into categories,” Bauer explained. “You would not have a team with four or five members against a team with 25 members because it’s so aesthetically different.” She said that the judges sit on one side of the gym during competition and that teams design their choreography to play to the judges, similar to the practice of a marching band playing to the home grandstand at a football game. “Like most judging, there is a standard you have to meet in five categories, (including) difficulty, uniqueness, unison, general effect and variety, (which is) basically body movement and choreography. You can do a short or long program,” she said, explaining that the short program is four minutes and the long program is six minutes. “Given that it was the first time that three of the four (girls) had done this, we did a short program.” Bauer said that she is proud of the girls who worked hard and had to finance the cost of participating on the team. “It is a big-time commitment. A lot of them are committed to being in other activities, like the (school) play and other clubs,” Bauer noted. “They had to buy uniforms and their warm-up suits, their competition flags and their silks. They had to pay for their own entrance fees and travel.” Bauer noted that the group is planning to march in local parades in preparation for the upcoming season, noting that the girls recently performed at the Morgantown Carnival. “We have already started our choreography for next year and hope (the program) grows,” she said. “We have some middle school kids coming up (to high school) who have expressed an interest.” Twin Valley students interested in joining the group are asked to email twirlmtc@aol.com. More information about the team is available by searching for “Twin Valley Color Guard” on Facebook.
