Plans underway for Berks Book Bonanza

Even though the Berks Book Bonanza will not be held until September, volunteers are busy now collecting, inspecting and sorting books donated by the community.

Volunteers are accepting books at the new site of the Book Bonanza, previously held at the Berkshire Mall, at the County of Berks South Campus location, 400 E. Wyomissing Ave., Mohnton. Items will be accepted on Mondays and Tuesdays from 9 a.m. to noon, on Wednesdays from 5 to 7 p.m. and on Saturday, Aug. 17, from 9 a.m. to noon. Aug. 17 will be the last day donation day.

As part of a drive-through format, those who have books, DVDs, CDs or games or vinyl records to donate will be greeted by volunteers who will take the items from their car, box them, load them onto carts and bring them indoors for sorting.

During any given collection time,

about 40 volunteers are on hand.

Each volunteer is given a sheet of book sorting guidelines provided by Judy Ellsworth, a member of the Book Bonanza Executive Committee, who has been involved with the sale since 2015.

“You first check the condition of the book. We only want to keep books that somebody will buy,” Ellsworth explained, noting that the four main categories of books at the sale will be history, mystery/thriller, romance and general fiction.

Books that are moldy or in bad condition are placed into boxes for recycling. “Even though we say we don’t take encyclopedias, Reader’s Digest condensed books or microwave cookbooks, you find them in there and we recycle them,” Ellsworth said. “We have a volunteer who pulls off the spirals so we can recycle the paper.”

Also rejected are books that have highlighting or writing in them. “We (also) look for time sensitive. We don’t need political commentary that is more than five years old,” Ellsworth noted.

“In the Health and Fitness (category), we don’t need (to read) about cancer treatments from 2000. We don’t need to read about

Humane Pennsylvania president and CEO celebrates 20 years

What started out as a part-time job at the Chester County SPCA (now the Brandywine Valley SPCA) has turned into a career in animal welfare for Karel Minor, president and CEO of Humane Pennsylvania (PA), who recently celebrated his 20th year with the organization.

Minor is a graduate of West Chester University, where he received a bachelor’s degree in earth and space science. During his 30-plus year career, Minor

Minor, who was honored in July with a celebratory luncheon and presented with a 20-year service pin, joined the Humane Society of Berks County in 2004. In 2014, he led the merger of the Humane Society of Berks County and the Humane League of Lancaster County to form Humane PA.

has served in various positions including operations, education, fundraising and development.

“I was finishing my degree, and my wife suggested that I could fill in my schedule with a part-time job,” explained Minor. “I was a part-time adoption counselor at the Chester County SPCA, then stepped into community educator and then operations manager, and that became a full-time job. I then picked up development and fundraising positions, and that became a permanent job.”

“I wasn’t expecting it to be career, and I am still in it,” he added, noting that his family currently has four cats, a baby turtle and three Costa Rican dart frogs. The family recently lost its senior dog, Treetop, a Labrador retriever.

Today, Minor is responsible for the overall operations of Humane PA, which includes the Freedom Center for Animal Life-Saving, 1801 N. 11th St., Reading; the Humane Pennsylvania Lancaster Campus, 2195 Lincoln Highway East; the Humane Veterinary Hospital, 1729 N. 11th St., Reading; the Giorgi Family Community Resource Center, 1350 Schuylkill Ave., Reading, which offers a pet food pantry, vaccines and microchip clinic; and the Danielle Ruiz-Murphy Dog Park, 503 S. Center Road (Route 82), Birdsboro.

“I hire senior-level staff, and I am involved in the process from top to bottom - budgeting, developing programs, how things run and where we should be going in the future,” Minor stated. “I do everything and more.”

Although his primary office is in Reading, Minor visits the various Humane PA facilities during the week, including the Lancaster campus, which recently opened a new Cat & Critter Adoption Center.

Minor said that he is proud of what he and his team have been able to accomplish through the years, such as no-fee adoption events, the establishment of a pet food pantry and the creation of a nonprofit full-service veterinary practice.

“The first thing was … feewaived adoptions. We did it as a test drive in 2004. We only did it for animals which were set for imminent euthanasia,” Minor said, noting that the first year, 200 animals were adopted through the program. “We opened it widely to all animals, and it was so successful it won a national award as ‘Best Industry Practice.’”

The other two programs that were developed under Minor’s leadership are the pet food pantry and the nonprofit veterinary practice. “We started with new things that were considered radical at the time, which are normal operations now,” said Minor. “I am proud that we as a team have done things that were true firsts in the industry.”

The newest program being offered by Humane Pennsylvania in both Berks and Lancaster counties is Spike & Tilly’s Pet Resort, which offers pet boarding for animals, whether they are there for the day, overnight or for an extended time while their families are on vacation. Separate boarding accommodations are available for K-9 officers, pets with special needs and pets requiring emergency boarding through Humane PA’s PetNet program. “We recognized there is a need not only for affordable boarding but boarding that could handle dogs with special needs or police dogs. This will change that,” Minor said.

Finally, Minor announced that families are encouraged to adopt a new pet during Clear the Shelters Month, a nationwide pet adoption and donation campaign that helps find loving homes for animals in need. This year’s event will be celebrated from Saturday, Aug. 10, through Tuesday, Sept. 10.

For donated games, volunteers make sure the game has all its pieces. “Who wants a game that is missing something? So they take the ones that don’t have all the pieces, and when someone else comes with that (same) game, we can take (the needed pieces) and complete (the game),” noted Ellsworth.

The sale will also feature collectible books, which are books published prior to 1960; a large-print section; and an area reserved for children’s books.

Because book tables are replenished throughout the sale, Ellsworth noted, about 75,000 books will be available during the sale. She noted many people will shop for items all three days of the sale.

She added that the sale would not take place without the efforts of the volunteers. “We have on our volunteer list right now almost 140 names. Some

of them only volunteer during the sale,” Ellsworth said, adding that some of the older volunteers with mobility issues volunteer as cashiers. “People don’t realize what we do here. It is a huge undertaking.”

The Berks Book Bonanza will take place on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 20 and 21, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and on Sunday, Sept. 22, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. This will be the organization’s first sale since 2021 when it left its temporary residence at the Berkshire Mall.

All three days will have free admission with Sept. 22 earmarked as a Fill-a-Bag sale. Only cash or checks will be accepted as payment. The book sale fundraiser benefits two local organizations: the Friends of Berks County Public Libraries and the Reading Branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW).

To learn more, visit www .berksbookbonanza.org or www .facebook.com/BCPLFriends.

Books are sorted by volunteers and placed on tables by category. Boxes underneath the tables are used to replenish book selections throughout the sale.

Senior Connections to meet

Senior Connections will meet at Conestoga Mennonite Church, 2779 Main St., Morgantown, on Thursday, Aug. 8. A meal

will be served at noon, after which guest speaker Raymonda Samawi will present “From the Darkness to the Light.”

A former Muslim who converted to Christianity, Samawi is now a professional dressmaker. She established a nonprofit organization called Come To Me Ministries, which sends containers of dry food, medical supplies, sewing machines and fabrics to Iraq and Lebanon.

All seniors age 55 and older are invited to attend.

community programs, since many of the volunteer-run shops use sale proceeds to help others in need.

Locally, several organizations are looking for donations of quality used merchandise, including the Tel Hai Retirement Community’s Resale Shop, 1200 Tel Hai Circle, Honey Brook. The Resale Shop, located on the lower level of the Hertzler Apartments building, is generally open from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the third Friday of each month. Upcoming dates of operation include Fridays, Aug. 16 and Sept. 20.

Appointments are also available upon request by contacting Alicia Guthrie, director of development, at aguthrie@telhai.org or 610-2739333, ext. 2036.

“We are always happy to schedule an appointment for a customer to shop if they aren’t able to make it during regular hours,” Guthrie said, adding, “Donations to the Resale Shop benefit a wonderful cause - the Tel Hai Care Assurance Fund, which helps support residents who outlive their

ability to pay for the care they require.”

Donations to the Resale Shop are accepted every Monday from 10 a.m. to noon, excluding holidays. New or gently used items needed for donation include antiques, appliances, furniture, jewelry, housewares, linens, quilts, sewing materials, tools, mechanical items and small electronic appliances. The shop does not sell clothing, toys or books. For more information and a complete list of donation criteria, visit www.telhai .org/resale-shop.

Also in need of donations is the Morgantown ReUzit Shoppe, located at 2769 Main St. (Route 23), Morgantown. Donations, such as household goods, jewelry, fabric, clothing, books and toys, are accepted during business hours, which are Mondays through Fridays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

“We take a wide variety of things, (but) we don’t take large pieces of furniture, large appliances and computers.”

In addition to merchandise, Morgantown ReUzit is in need of volunteers. “There are all types of jobs - sorting, pricing and cleaning items,” Furness said, noting that those with mobility issues can complete tasks while seated. “We can offer a job to any person who has a heart to volunteer.”

All proceeds from sales at the shop benefit Mennonite Central Committee (MCC), a Christian relief organization. For more information, visit https:// morgantownreuzit.org or www.insta gram.com/morgantownreuzitshoppe or search for “Morgantown ReUzit Shoppe” on Facebook.

Donations, including clothing, toys, books, housewares, glassware, lamps, jewelry and linens, are accepted during store hours on Mondays through Fridays from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. and on Saturdays from 8 a.m. to noon. Items that are not accepted include computers and printers, console televisions, car seats, paint, entertainment centers, textbooks and encyclopedias. For more information, call 610-273-7633 or visit www.honeybrookyouthcenter.com/ steeple-to-people.

“What we ask is that the items work or are in good shape,” said Mazie Furness, who is general manager of Morgantown ReUzit with Leslie Tuley.

Steeple to People Thrift Shop, 4670 Horseshoe Pike (Route 322), Honey Brook, is also in need of donations. Proceeds from the shop benefit Steeple to People Ministries, which provides financial assistance to people in need and also operates the Honey Brook Youth Center.

Neighboring organizations that are in need of donations include the following: Re-Uzit Shop of New Holland, 707 W.
