Chester County OIC Seeks Volunteer Tutors By Francine Fulton
The Chester County Opportunities Industrialization Center (OIC) is currently seeking people from the community who would like to make the difference in the lives of adult learners by becoming volunteer tutors. No experience is necessary, but volunteers must have a minimum of a bachelor’s degree. According to Felice Burstein, adult tutoring assistant program coordinator, there is a current waiting list of 38 people located throughout Chester County who are in need of volunteer tutors to help them improve their English language skills. “We currently have students from 30 countries who want to learn English, as well as U.S.-born students who want to get their GED,” she said. Prospective tutors interested in the program are invited to attend an
EDUCATIONAL HIKE
Phoenixville Public Library will sponsor a Wilderness Survival Skills Hike in Warwick County Park, 191 County Park Road, Pottstown, on Sunday, Aug. 26, at 2 p.m. Park rangers will lead a fun and easy hike while covering essential skills, including navigation, foraging for food and water, scavenging for supplies, and first aid. The event is free and open to the public. Hiking boots and water are recommended. Participants will meet at the park office. Reservations are required on the Adult Events Calendar at www.phoenixvillelibrary.org or by calling 610-933-3013, ext. 132.
upcoming training program. It is only necessary to attend one of the sessions. The training sessions will take place on Monday, Sept. 24, from 9:30 a.m. to noon and on Wednesday, Sept. 26, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Both sessions will be held in the Burke Room of the Chester County Library, 450 Exton Square Parkway, Exton. Those who would like to get started right away can take part in a mini-training session before the program’s training session in the fall. “We have lots of resources, and I work with (tutors) to get them started. We do some one-onone training,” Burstein said. “It is not required, but we encourage them to attend the (formal) training.” Tutors are asked to meet with a student for a minimum of three hours a week for at least one year. “They have to meet at a public location; most meet See Volunteer Tutors pg 2
Summer Program Explores The Science Of Space “Usually, if (students) come back, it’s a good indicator that they are interested,” said Bill Turner when discussing the Science in the Summer program offered recently by the Honey Brook Community Library. “Rarely do kids drop out. There are a lot of fun things that this program has.” Science in the Summer is an experiment-oriented course that is offered to classes of 16 students in two age groups - children entering second and third grades (Level I) and children entering fourth through sixth grades (Level II). Honey Brook Library’s program, held at the Honey Brook Presbyterian Church, was offered from July 23 to 26. See Summer Program pg 8

The OIC is currently seeking additional tutors for adult learners throughout Chester County.

at libraries,” Burstein noted. “Three hours is a long time, so most tutors meet twice a week for an hour-and-a-half session.” Tutors are matched with students based on their preferences and geographical location. “Some people want someone from Latin America or someone who is finetuning their grammar,” noted Burstein. “Some people want (to tutor) someone who barely speaks English. It is really challenging, but this (volunteer experience can be) the most rewarding.” Burstein explained that students’ skills are tested when entering the program, and they are asked what goals they have. All the information is given to the tutors before they meet the students. In addition to studying to receive their high school equivalency diploma, some students are studying to become United States citizens, while others have goals such as improving their reading, writing and spelling. “Some students want to go the doctor with their kids and not have their kids translate, or they want to go to the store (and be able to read the signs and prices),” Burstein noted. She said tutors must be kind and patient and be willing to stay with the program. “I think the

main quality of tutors is commitment - willing to work and a desire to help another adult for 12 hours a month,” said Burstein. “The (tutors who) do the best are the ones who are committed to it. The pairs that are successful develop relationships.” She said that the results of the tutoring provide tangible proof of the program’s success. “We’ve had tutors help people get their citizenship or get a new job,” said Burstein. “We had one student who worked on a landscape crew. Because his English was better, he became a foreman.” Burstein is also a tutor, and her student, who is from China, is learning to improve her pronunciation skills. “I learned a lot about her culture,” Burstein said, noting that she also had to brush up on her own grammar skills in order to be a successful tutor. “Tutors get a lot out of (the experience). Tutors find it rewarding. You can see the rewards because you feel like you’ve helped someone.” For more information about becoming a volunteer tutor or to register for the training session, readers may contact Burstein at fburstein@cc-oic.org or 610-280-2618. DOG DAYS OF SUMMER SALE
GriefShare from pg 1 “It turned out to be one of the best things I have ever done for myself,” said Donna Trace when recalling her decision to attend GriefShare, a support group for those dealing with the death of a loved one. “It is something we all have in common. We all lose people, and we all need help.” The fall session of GriefShare will begin on Tuesday, Aug. 14, at Gateway Church, 160 Cowan Road, Parkesburg. Meetings will be held every Tuesday through Oct. 23 from 7 to 9 p.m. The meetings are facilitated by Paul and Twila Ranck. GriefShare is a nondenominational group that features biblical teaching on grief and recovery topics. Session topics include “Challenges of Grief,” “The Journey of Grief” and “Heaven.” The topic for the opening meeting will be “Is This Normal?” Trace, who lost her husband, attended the complete GriefShare session both times it has been held at Gateway Church. Prior to that, the sessions took place at FAMILIES in Gap. “I was at church and I heard them say they were going to have (GriefShare) here, and I thought I could use that. So I signed up that day,” Trace recalled. “A friend went with me to be my support. I wasn’t sure how I was going to react and what it was going to be like.” Each session, which is held in The
Venue meeting area in the church, begins with light snacks and beverages, including coffee and tea. Each person is then asked to introduce himself or herself and to share which loved one they have lost. “We usually go around and say our first names, but if you don’t want to talk, you don’t have to,” said Trace. “You just say, ‘Pass.’” Attendees then watch a DVD that features real-life stories of people who have experienced loss. Each participant receives a workbook that features a section for taking notes on each video as well as daily Scripture readings. “After the video, if there is a large group, we break up into smaller groups and discuss what we got out of the video,” said Trace. “Again, if you don’t want to talk, you don’t have to.” Following the breakout sessions, the group comes together for closing comments and a prayer before the meeting ends. GriefShare is open to people of all ages, including those who have experienced a recent loss and those who have been grieving for years. “We end up getting different ways of looking at things because people react differently and everyone is at a different point in their journey,” said Trace. “Everyone is in the same boat, and there is so much support. It’s a big, big help.” People can attend GriefShare at any time because each meeting is self-contained; participants do not have to attend in sequence. “I got something out of each ses-
sion,” Trace commented. She pointed out that at times, friendship groups have formed outside of GriefShare. “Over the summer, we had little potluck dinners once a month, so we could still support each other throughout the summer,” she said. “You can make some nice friends.” Some people repeat the entire course or just the sessions that deal with a particular topic. Also, people who have a recent loss are welcome to attend the program again after some time has passed. “I wanted to go through it again to see where I was and to see how far I’ve come from the first time,” Trace said, explaining why she participated in the course a second time. “You get little workbooks, and I could see the difference from the first time I went to the class to the second time. I’ve come further than I thought.” For more information about the GriefShare session at Gateway Church or to register, readers may visit www.gcwired.com/ griefshare or email griefshare@gateway onechurch.com. More information about the GriefShare program can be found at www.griefshare.org. Digital Technology from pg 1 Chester County’s increased advancement in digital technology has earned a top 10 ranking among America’s more than 3,000 counties in the 16th annual Digital Counties Survey. The Center for Digital Government (CDG) and National Association of Counties (NACo) have placed Chester County as ninth in the nation for best technology practices, including initiatives designed to save tax dollars, boost transparency, and focus on cyber security and citizen engagement. This is the third consecutive year the county has received the award. Chester County was recognized for various efforts, including providing public access to information; prioritizing of information technology security; maintaining a robust social media operation, which focuses on wellness issues; and improving its business processes to save money on technology purchases. The award was presented at the NACo Annual Conference in Nashville. Chester County Commissioner Terence Farrell and county chief information officer Glenn Angstadt accepted the award. Farrell recognized the county’s department of computing and information services and its digital communications personnel, along with members of other departments, for their efforts related to the county’s digital technology initiatives. The Digital Counties Survey is conducted annually in the spring. All U.S. counties are invited to participate in the survey, which examines the overall technology programs and plans of the participating counties. Sensenig noted that Middle Creek Search and Rescue is scheduled to give a presentation at 3 p.m. The band Famous Rumors will perform three sets between 6 and 10 p.m. “They play all kinds of music including country, pop, and rock ‘n’ roll,” noted Sensenig. The annual Bowmansville Fire Company auction will be held at 7 p.m. on Aug. 11. A highlight of this year’s auction will be the bidding for the chainsaw carving of an eagle created during the 2017 Bowmansville Days event. Additional items will include a pair of Adirondack chairs, a pole barn, and handcrafted wooden trucks. A number of local organizations will sell food at Bowmansville Days. “We will have
The theme was “The Science of Space.” The four-session program began with a lesson on orbits, the movements of the earth and the sun and the moon, including the phases of the moon and eclipses. “That struck home. Last year they saw (the eclipse), and this year they found out why it happened,” Turner stated. Also covered during the week was the Apollo 11 mission to the moon. “We talked about all the things that could have gone wrong and it didn’t,” Turner pointed out. The students also learned about meteorites and had the opportunity to view actual moon rocks. To learn how a space suit is put together, students created their own space suits with tissue paper and plastic baskets. “We draped tissue paper over the baskets and they tried to shoot a corn (kernel) through it with a pea shooter,” Turner explained. “It was easy at first, but then they learned to build up the layers to get more protection.” The final day of the session featured a
discussion of rockets and a rocket launch to illustrate Newton’s third law of motion: “For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction.” In order for the students to learn about thrust and how rockets are launched, Turner chose two students to sit on small scooters. One youngster pushed the other, and each of them moved in opposite directions. “Both kids (move), but it shows there is movement away from each other,” said Turner. “It’s not only the ‘rocket’ going up; the person who is pushing the ‘rocket’ is going backwards.” Students moved outside to create their own rockets by taking an empty 35mm film canister, adding a quarter-tablet of antacid
Life Troop PA 0011 selling chicken nuggets and funnel cakes,” said Sensenig, who added that the St. Paul’s Church cake wheel is a popular activity. Fivepointville Ambulance Service will sell french fries, and Pine Grove Church will sell walking tacos and meatball sandwiches. “The Bowmansville Fire Company will have pulled pork sandwiches, fruit bowls, and soft-serve ice cream,” shared Sensenig, who noted that the Fivepointville Fire Company will sell soups and sausage sandwiches. The Christian Motorcycle Association will have a display with coffee, water, and free information, as well as prayers for visitors. Readers who would like more information may search for “Bowmansville Days” on Facebook. with water, capping the canister and turning it upside down. Within a few minutes, the film canister launched, sending its contents through the air like a rocket ship. Turner said that he tailored each session to be age-appropriate. “It’s the same (lesson), but I go into far more detail with the older ones. They have more background (in science),” he noted. “They are learning from each other and sharing what they know. The younger ones don’t have the background, so it’s a lot of me giving (knowledge) to them.” Science in the Summer was founded by a national pharmaceutical company in 1986 and is held in conjunction with local libraries. The Franklin Institute became a partner and administrator of the program in 2012. For more information about the program, readers may visit www.scienceinthe summer.com.

Dean and Dane Fox are scheduled to perform chainsaw carving demonstrations throughout the day. Pony rides will be held at 1 p.m., and at 2 p.m., the 13th annual candy scramble will be open to children ages 1 through 12. “At 3:30 p.m. we have a kiddie tractor pull for three age groups,” said Sensenig, who noted that children in the age groups of 3 and 4, 5 and 6, and 7 and 8 may take part, but they are encour-

The community is invited to view the night sky through powerful telescopes owned by members of the ChesMont Astronomical Society (CAS) during StarFest 2018, to be held on Saturday, Aug. 11, at Hopewell Furnace National Historic Site, located at 2 Mark Bird Lane, Elverson, off Route 345 and Hopewell Road. The annual event will also feature educational activities for children, along with guest speakers and door prizes. Admission and parking will be free, but donations will be accepted. Attendees are welcome to bring lawn chairs or blankets for seating. A food vendor will be on-site. This year marks the 20th anniversary of StarFest, which was first held at Warwick County Park. “We moved to Hopewell in 2010,” noted Rob Cordivari, who is event co-chair along with Mary Howe. “This event will cover all aspects of astronomy for beginners all the way to advanced amateurs,” said CAS club president Josh Wright. “We will have a full spread of presentations, astronomers available and telescopes available. There will be
multiple things going on throughout the evening.” StarFest will open at 5:30 p.m. for solar observing and telescope setup. A Kids’ Corner featuring educational activities will be available from 6 to 7 p.m. Opening remarks will be offered by Wright, who will talk about the evening’s events and provide a short history of CAS and StarFest. Special guest speaker James Aguirre, associate professor of physics and astronomy at the University of Pennsylvania, will present a program at 7:30 p.m. Aguirre’s topic will be radio astronomy, which is study of celestial objects that give off radio waves. The keynote speaker for StarFest 2018 will be Derrick Pitts, chief astronomer at the Franklin Institute Science Museum in Philadelphia. Attendees will be given free tickets to win door prizes, such as small telescopes, binoculars and other prizes, which will be awarded throughout the evening. The grand prize of a high-powered telescope will be awarded at approximately 9:15 p.m. Public stargazing will begin at
9:30 p.m. Approximately 30 telescopes will be available to attendees, who will be able to view Jupiter, Saturn and Mars throughout the course of the evening. “This is as close as Mars will be to Earth in our lifetime,” Wright pointed out. Another highlight of the evening will be 10 Object Row, when 10 members’ telescopes will each be focused on a different deep sky object. This will allow viewers to see a variety of astronomical objects such as a nebula, a supernova remnant and a galaxy. CAS is a nonprofit amateur astronomy club devoted to raising awareness of astronomy and to educating the general public about light pollution and preserving the night sky. CAS meets monthly on the Sunday nearest the full moon starting at 7 p.m. at the Crow’s Nest Preserve, 201 Piersol Road, Elverson. The guest speaker for the meeting on Sunday, Aug. 26, will be Bob Button, NASA’s ambassador during the Mercury, Gemini and Apollo missions. The club also holds Star Parties at French Creek and Marsh Creek state parks. The next scheduled Star Party will be on Saturday, Sept. 15, from 6:30 to 11 p.m. at Marsh Creek State Park, 675 Park Road, Downingtown. The public is welcome to participate in either or both events.
this year, Dinniman secured $50,000 in state grant funding for the academy to purchase specialty training equipment and professional gear. The program allows high school students to get a head start on careers in firefighting, emergency response, and law enforcement. Young people under the age of 18 can earn firefighter certification in preparation for joining a fire department on their 18th birthday. The Octorara Area Homeland Security and Protective Services Academy is a three-year career and technical education program offered to students in 10th, 11th, and 12th grades. The academy has partnered with the Chester County Public Safety Training Campus (CCPSTC) to offer an opportunity for students interested in careers in firefighting, law enforcement, and emergency medical services. The academy consists of two half-day programs at the CCPSTC and student academic instruction at their sending district’s high school. The academy is housed at the CCPSTC to provide students with the latest technology and equipment available while offering them the opportunity to interact with firefighters, law enforcement personnel, and emergency management professionals on a daily basis. Cadets in the academy also join their local fire department or emergency service department upon entering the program. Students who complete three years of the Octorara Area Homeland Security and Protective Services Academy program may earn up to 60 state and national certifications, as well as up to 54 college credits. Internships and coop work opportunities are available for select students.
State Sen. Andy Dinniman (far left) and Beau Crowding (second from right), deputy director of fire services for the Chester County Department of Emergency Services, received recognition from cadets of the Octorara Area Homeland Security and Protective Services Academy, including Christopher Kendig (second from left) and Jordan Marzolf (right).
