Honey Brook police receive pet scanners

Thanksto the generosity of area residents and a local business, the Honey Brook Borough Police Department now has two universal pet chip scanners that can be used to help lost pets return home.

Deb Klinger, whose son, Robert Klinger Jr., is a police officer in the department, spearheaded the fundraising effort. “I started a GoFundMe event on Facebook and shared a request that people donate to purchase a universal chip scanner

Sharing the wonders of the night sky

Hopewell Furnace site of StarFest 2023

2023 marks the 25th anniversary of StarFest, an event presented by the ChesMont Astronomical Society (CAS), which allows members of the public to view the night sky through more than 20 amateur and high-powered telescopes.

StarFest 2023 will take place on Saturday, Aug. 19, from 6 to 11 p.m. at Hopewell Furnace National Historic Site, located at 2 Mark Bird Lane, Elverson. The program will also feature speakers, astronomy presentations and giveaways. Admission and parking are free, but donations will be accepted.

for the Honey Brook Borough Police Department,” Deb explained. “Pete Cooper from Spring Creek Design said that he would purchase one to donate so I continued to collect for a second one so that each patrol unit can carry a chip scanner.”

According to the American Kennel Club, a microchip is about the size of a large grain of rice. For dogs, it is injected under the loose skin between the dog’s shoulder blades. It is a simple procedure that can be done in the office of a veterinarian. The microchip has a radio frequency identification transponder that carries

a unique identification number. When the microchip is scanned, it transmits the ID number, which corresponds to the pet’s owners. Pet owners must register the chip with a national pet recovery database, such as HomeAgain.

In Honey Brook Borough, the scanner will allow the officers to scan a lost pet that is brought to the station or one they may come across. “The animal gets scanned, and if it has a chip, the officer can contact HomeAgain and provide the chip information,” Deb explained. “HomeAgain would reach out to the

Berks library readers reach countywide goal to sponsor pet

Through the Pages for Pets program, the adoption fee for Agent 007, an 8-year-old black cat, has been sponsored by Reading District Libraries. Agent 007 is currently available for adoption from the Animal Rescue League (ARL) of Berks County.

Pages for Pets was a new initiative hosted by Reading District Libraries as part of its annual Summer Reading Program. Youths from across Berks

County, including patrons at the Village Library of Morgantown and the Boone Area Library in Birdsboro, were challenged to read toward a countywide goal of 500,000 minutes from June 19 until July 28. Each minute counted toward the financial sponsorship of a pet’s adoption at the ARL. Readers surpassed this goal by reading a combined 680,000 minutes. Participants in the first-time program were asked to complete a reading ticket listing their minutes read. Tickets were available at See Pet adoption pg 4

Saint Peter’s Village to be site of Cars and Coffee

Cars and Coffee, a car show held in Saint Peter’s Village, takes place on the second Sunday of the month, weather permitting, from 8 to 11 a.m. The next scheduled event will be on Aug. 13.

The car show founder is Aaron Phillips, a 2022 graduate of Owen J. Roberts High School, who is a car enthusiast and also wants to promote

the historic village. The village features small shops and eateries and the scenic French Creek, which flows over the rocks behind the shops.

During the car shows, visitors are encouraged to purchase coffee and breakfast items from one of the village’s shops and then view the cars, which are parked in the lot across from the Saint Peter’s Village post office, 3300 Saint Peter’s Road.

Cars and Coffee attracts anywhere from 50 to 80 cars each month. All makes and models of vehicles are welcome. The car shows are free for spectators and vehicle owners.

Saint Peter’s Village is located off Route 23 on Saint Peter’s Road in Warwick Township. To learn more about the car show, search for “Saint Peter’s Village Cars and Coffee” on Facebook or contact Phillips at aphillips6698@gmail.com.

CCWC provides grants

The Chester County Women’s Commission (CCWC) selected and provided grant funding to four organizations to support and enhance programming that benefits women and mental health in Chester County. The grants were announced during the May 18 Women in Chester County Blueprint Lunch Series hosted by The Fund for Women and Girls. As part of Mental Health Awareness Month, the May lunch event focused on women and mental wellness. The CCWC’s focus for 2023 is highlighting and recognizing the unique needs and intersection of women and mental health.

The four organizations that received grants of $2,500 each are Community Volunteers in Medicine (CVIM), LCH Health & Community Services (LCH), Maternal and Child Health Consortium (MCHC), and Project Healing Hive. All of these organizations offer mental health and wellness programs specifically designed for women around Chester County.

CVIM hosts a monthly group, Cafecitos, during which female patients receive education to improve their health and the health of their children. LCH

pet owner that their animal has been found.”

Deb has been involved with animal rescue for the past several years, helping to transport animals to local rescues. “With the numerous posts about found and lost pets on Facebook community pages, I asked my son if it would be useful if the department had a universal chip scanner. His answer was a resounding ‘yes,’” she said.

The scanners were presented to Robert and fellow officer Brian Hughes on July 11 by Deb along with Jenna Quindlen representing Spring Creek Design. Deb reported that one of scanners has already been put into use. “The day we delivered the scanners, they had a dog there, which my son scanned, but it did not have a chip,” she noted.

The particular scanners purchased for the police department were at the suggestion of Cathy HermanHarsch, the founder of Chesco Pet Search, an allvolunteer group of lost pet

recovery specialists who operate throughout Chester County. “I have a very good friend, Donna Seward, who is one of the team members for Chesco Pet Search, which has successfully recovered several animals in the area,” Deb said. “(The scanner suggested by Herman-Harsch) is the one I set my goal to purchase with the GoFundMe.”

Deb noted that the pet recovery system does not work unless the chip is registered. “People who adopt or rescue pets that are chipped must register the chips with the chip company. Once they register the chips, it’s a lifetime registration into the chip database,” she said. “Pet owners do not need to maintain a membership with the chip company unless they want to take advantage of the membership perks, like 24/7 medical hotlines and/or pet recovery services. The most important thing a pet owner can do is register the chip and keep the contact information up to date.”

We encourage civic and fraternal groups, schools, churches, scouts, and other local organizations to submit news releases of general interest to the majority of our readership. Primary consideration is given to dated articles of an informative nature–activities and events of local interest sponsored, presented, or planned by area organizations and institutions. Related photographs of good quality are encouraged also, but complete picture identification must be included. Undated articles of general interest are used as space permits. All articles must contain a contact name and telephone number.

StarFest will open at 6 p.m. for solar observing and telescope setup. Attendees will also be able to meet the astronomers and check out their telescopes.

Opening remarks will be offered at 7 p.m., followed by a talk by Gary Becker, a professor at Moravian University, who will discuss his May trip to Australia to view the solar eclipse.

Described as an “eclipse chaser,” Becker will discuss the Australian eclipse and how he plans to view and photograph the upcoming American eclipse on Monday, April 8, 2024, including the equipment and techniques he will utilize and weather considerations. “The (eclipse) that he viewed in Australia was not visible in the United States,” explained CAS member Rob Cordivari, who leads the StarFest committee. “The next one coming up in 2024 will be visible in the United States.”

Becker was referred to CAS by past StarFest keynote speaker Pete Detterline. “People who are eclipse hunters will travel all over the world to see them,” noted Cordivari. “(Detterline) is already signed up to view an eclipse in 2028 in Egypt.”

Keynote speaker Veronique

Pettit will talk from 8 to 9 p.m. about her work studying massive stars in the universe. Pettit, who studied physics at Université Laval in Québec City, Québec, Canada, is interested in the lives of massive stars, which are 10 times larger than the sun, especially in the study of these stars’ magnetic fields.

All attendees will be given free tickets to win door prizes, such as small telescopes, binoculars and astronomy-related

books, which will be given out throughout the evening.

Public stargazing will begin around 9:15 p.m. Participants will be able to view objects such as planets, star clusters, globular clusters, double stars and supernova remnants.

“The highlight of the evening will be 10 Object Row; 10 of our members’ telescopes will be focused on a different deep-sky object so the public gets a variety of astronomical objects to look at,” explained Cordivari. “People can go down the row in any order. There will also be other telescopes set up that are not part of the 10 Object Row.”

Attendees are welcome to bring lawn chairs or blankets for seating during the speaker presentations. A food truck will also be on-site.

The rain/cloud date for StarFest 2023 is Sunday, Aug. 20. Cancellation information and weather updates will be posted at www.chesmont astro.com/home/events/star fest-2023 and at www.face book.com/ChesMontAstro. More information about CAS and upcoming observing events can be found at www.chesmontastro.com.

the individual libraries, or they could be downloaded from the libraries’ websites.

“They filled out their tickets, submitted them to their local library and we tabulated everything together,” explained Marissa Guidara, youth services district consultant for the Reading District Libraries, noting that each of the 25 library locations in Berks County participated. “This was a big deal for us because these separate library locations worked together for one goal.”

She said that although the program was targeted toward youngsters, people of all ages participated. “It was intended for kids, but we had certain libraries that had teens who chose to participate,” Guidara said. “In some areas, we had libraries that asked if adults could be participants. People are really looking for ways to help. … So many people care about animal welfare.”

Agent 007 is described as a “cuddly spy cat” who “enjoys

relaxing in his favorite sunbeam and watching the world go by from a cozy windowsill,” according to the ARL website.

“He is a little bit older and was a house cat all his life before he got surrendered,” noted Guidara. “Sometimes older cats get overlooked because there are kittens (available to adopt). Also, because of superstitions, black cats are usually the last ones left at the shelter. We have gotten one step closer to finding him a home.”

Guidara noted that the Pages for Pets activity fit in perfectly with the libraries’ Summer Reading Program, themed “All Together Now.” “(Children) could read a little bit, but when you added what everyone else was doing, they made a big change together,” she said. “Kids could feel empowered to make a change and do something kind for an animal.”

She hopes to repeat the effort next summer. “It went really well. I am hoping it is something we can try again with ARL or another organization,” Guidara added. “The reaction has been big.”

To learn more about adopting Agent 007 or another animal from the Berks ARL, visit www.berksarl.org. Those who took part in Pages for Pets are asked to complete a survey about their experience at www .berkslibraries.org/kids/P4P.
