Living God Lutheran Church Welcomes New Pastor BY FRANCINE FULTON
iving God Lutheran Church (LGLC) in Honey Brook recently welcomed a new pastor, the Rev. Ron Dziuk. He was installed during a service held in June led by the Rev. Patricia Davenport, bishop of the Southeastern Pennsylvania Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA). The new pastor recently shared information about his service, his philosophy and goals and the parish family. Community Courier: Where are you from? Where did you serve previously? Dziuk: Lisa, my spouse, and (our) twin daughters, Nicole and Arielle, are originally from Connecticut, but have lived in Downingtown for 20 years. My previous home congregation was St. Paul’s in Lionville. I served Messiah Lutheran Church for three years during seminary and served St. John’s UCC in Phoenixville for two years during my internship. Community Courier: How would you describe your teaching style/philosophy? D z i u k : My core belief, which forms everything that I do and am, is that God is a loving God that has always - and promises to always love all of creation. He promises to love and forgive all people regardless of what we have (done) or will do. He does not want us to live in fear or guilt, but instead live in healthy relation with God and cre-

When Juliana Flora was searching through boxes of her father’s mementos after he passed away, she came upon an unexpected treasure - recollections about Historic Joanna Furnace written in 1936 by her great-great-grandmother, who was the daughter of ironmaster Levi Heber Smith. The discovery led Flora to write a book, titled “My Childhood at Joanna: Recollections of Daisy Emily Smith Morris.” Flora, president of the Hay Creek Valley Historical Association (HCVHA), the nonprofit organization that maintains the historic site, held a book launch on Aug. 1 at Joanna Furnace, which was a thriving iron-making community in the 18th and 19th centuries. Flora explained how the book came about and offered visitors signed copies to purchase. A portion of all proceeds from book sales will benefit the HCVHA and Joanna Furnace. See Book Launch pg 5

God calls us to love all of creation, not just in word, but to be actively involved. C o m m u n i t y C o u r i e r : Do you have any plans or goals? Will you make any changes, add new programming or additional services? Dziuk: We are in the process of (taking) a close look at all our existing ministries to see what changes need to be made. We currently have one blended service, but are looking to add a contemporary worship (service) to better serve those who prefer more contemporary music and a more casual atmosphere. We not only welcome but invite all ideas. We are also looking at offering more small group gatherings that will occur in the church, people’s homes and community establishments (such as) restaurants, senior living facilities, etc. C o m m u n i t y C o u r i e r : How has your time at LGLC been so far? Have you been meeting all the congregation members? D z i u k : I am in the process of speaking with every member of the congregation individually to hear their interests, concerns, fears, needs and passions for others and themselves. Community Courier: How would you describe the congregation? D z i u k : Living God is a family, who is extremely loving, welcoming, down to earth and non-judgmental. I am a big proponent and believer that God wants us to enjoy

Mission Trip Birdsboro (MTB) volunteers were out in full force this year helping neighbors in need with projects around their homes. From July 21 to 25, volunteers from local churches worked at 30 different locations in the community painting, completing home repairs and doing landscaping work, which included tree removal and planting flowers. Volunteers also made repairs to the pavilion and picnic tables at Main Bird Park. Volunteers wore distinctive red shirts bearing the phrase

“Build Each Other Up,” which was this year’s MTB theme. In addition, each work site included a sign that read “God’s Hands at Work.” “This year, there were more participants than ever - 130 volunteers,” reported volunteer Stuart Wells, a member of St. Paul’s United Church of Christ (UCC), Birdsboro. “As a nondenominational Christian ministry, MTB gives participants the opportunity to share Christ’s love by striving to exemplify Christ’s teachings to love our neighbors and to serve others in need with kindness.” Wells quoted James 2:18, which reads, “You have faith and I have works. Show me your faith apart from your works, and I by my works will show you my faith.” “In other words, actions speak louder than words, and during Mission Trip Birdsboro participants strive to demonstrate what it looks like to ‘love your neighbor as yourself,’” Wells stated. One of the youngest volunteers was Sami Blankenbiller, a student at Twin Valley Middle School and a member of Abundant Life Church in Birdsboro, who spent time painting a deck and a fence. Sami and two of his siblings were encouraged to participate in MTB by their dad. “My dad said we should do this to show our love of neighbors and God’s love,” said Sami. In addition to completing the work, volunteers met daily for prayer and worship at different church locations, and a closing celebration was held at St. Mark’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Birdsboro. MTB, now in its eighth year, started at St. Paul’s UCC in 2014. In that initial year, about 19 church volunteers worked on four homes and completed three community projects. The number of projects doubled the following year. As more churches began to participate, the ministry continued to grow. See Mission pg 7

was in charge of the workers.” The ironmaster’s mansion is no longer in existence. It was torn down in the 1950s by Bethlehem Steel, which once owned the furnace property. The company eventually deeded the land to the HCVHA in 1979. “An interesting story is that Daisy was living in an apartment in Bryn Mawr. She knew that her mansion had been torn down, so my dad went to get one of the bricks from the mansion and brought it to her,” Flora said. “He knew how much it meant to her and her heartbreak at it being gone, and he wanted her have a piece to remember.” Flora noted she felt it was important to share the information contained in the document with others. “This is (Daisy’s) memory of this place and I’m hoping future generations can enjoy it,” she said. “The iron industry was important to the area, but with this book, I want to bring the people (who lived and worked at Joanna Furnace) alive.”

Flora recalled the moment she found the document. “I had many surprise finds in the boxes, but it was the biggest surprise,” Flora said. “It wasn’t in a binder or anything. It was just 36 pages of handwritten words on what would have been stationery paper at the time. It was like she was speaking to me.” It took Flora a year to transcribe the document and add photographs and commentary with the help of her sister, Edith Bissell, who read excerpts of the book at the recent book launch. “We didn’t change very much because she was a very eloquent writer,” Flora pointed out. Flora said that her greatgreat-grandmother wrote a lot about the ironmaster’s mansion, calling it the “the hub of the universe.” Daisy lived in the mansion until she was 11 with her family. When she was 11, they moved to Philadelphia, but they would spend their summers at the furnace,” Flora said. “Her father would spend more time there because he

A sweet summertime tradition is enjoying a freshly picked ear of corn. And, thanks to freezing techniques, corn can be enjoyed year-round. Roberta Cosentino, manager of healthy food access programs at the Chester County Food Bank, recently shared information about preparing corn on the cob. First, she explained, cooks who choose to prepare the corn by boiling it should drop the corn into boiling water for seven to 10 minutes. “I would bring the water to a boil first. Otherwise, the corn would cook for too long,” she said. “The bigger the kernels and/or the older the corn, the longer you should cook it. I generally find if it sticks to your teeth, it’s probably overcooked.” Cosentino said that she prefers grilling corn on the cob. “This is my favorite method for cooking corn,” she stated. “I peel the outer leaves, but keep the inner leaves on, and grill the corn until the husk has charred. Hopefully, some of the kernels char as well. In a pinch, I’ll also do this under the broiler.”
When selecting corn to buy, shoppers should choose larger ears with fully mature kernels whether the corn is white, yellow or bicolor. “As with most varieties of produce, (the choice between the three varieties) is about personal preference, memories and where and when it was picked,” Cosentino noted. When asked if it is true that each corn “hair” represents one kernel of corn, Cosentino replied, “Corn hair or ‘silk’ has the potential to be a kernel of corn if it’s pollinated.” Corn can be frozen for future use by cooking ears in boiling water, cutting the kernels off each cob and then placing the kernels into freezer bags while removing as much air as possible from the bags. To make cutting off the kernels easier, local home cook Cheryl Panik Kerr recommends using a Bundt pan. “Stand (the corn cob) up in the hole in the center of the Bundt pan. As you cut the kernels off, they will fall into the pan and make your cleanup easier,” she noted. According to home cook Patt Collmann, corn on the cob should be boiled for about
five to six minutes before freezing. “Put (the boiled corn) into ice water, then cut it off the cob using a Bundt pan,” she explained. “Lay (the corn) on flat cookie sheets and flash freeze. Then put (the corn) in baggies back into the freezer.” Home cook Marcia Stoner said after blanching and ice cooling the corn on the cob, it can be used to make regular corn or creamed corn. “When you slice (the corn) off the cob, you can do either corn kernels or creamed corn,” she explained. “For corn kernels, cut near the cob to get the whole kernel. For older ears, (make) creamed corn by cutting the top off the kernels. Then turn the knife over and scrape down the cob with the back of knife to squeeze all the corn out, leaving most of the kernel shell behind. Both are delicious but have different texture for different recipes.” Collmann said she has been freezing corn for 40 years. “It has always been my kids’ favorite any time of year,” she said. “Take whatever you need (out of the freezer), put it into bowl, microwave until hot and serve. It’s like eating off a cob.”

Randy Litwin of Parkesburg is color blind, which causes difficulties with everyday tasks like coordinating clothing, judging the color of a traffic light, playing board games and even cooking. Litwin, 41, a graduate of Twin Valley High School, along with other volunteers, recently got to experience seeing colors for the first time thanks to special glasses developed by EnChroma, a company based out of Berkeley, Calif., that produces eyewear for color blindness and low vision. Eight pairs of the glasses are now available to borrow through Berks County

Public Libraries (BCPL). The glasses were unveiled during a ceremony held at the Village Library of Morgantown on June 26. In addition to Litwin, other volunteers who took part in the reveal event were Shawn Fies, 39, of Fleetwood, an elementary music teacher; Daren Ernfield, 41, of Richland, a probation officer; Tyler Steele, 15, a student in the Lampeter-Strasburg School District; and Stephen Macready of Boyertown, 33, an audio/visual technician. Amy Resh, BCPL administrator, was the host of the program, which was attended by Berks County Commissioners Christian Leinbach, Kevin Barnhardt and Michael Rivera. Leinbach said he was surprised to learn statistics about color blindness. “One in 12 males are color blind. One in 200 females are color blind,” he said. “I did not know the disparity was that great.” After a count of three, the men donned the glasses and immediately began looking at the scenery around them. “When I put them on, immediately some red and greens

I started looking to familiar objects, my car, the balloons and plants to see the difference,” said Litwin. “As I wore the glasses longer, more color changes began to stand out.” “Now I have to go back and learn colors, but it’s a great opportunity, and I am thankful for it,” Litwin added. “Colors come up every day, so it’s an opportunity to communicate with people in language you

The Chester County commissioners are looking for volunteers to help direct the county’s nearly $102 million American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds. The county government is finalizing its structure for prioritizing, requesting, and reviewing proposals as it determines effective strategies for rebuilding communites affected by the pandemic. According to the commissioner’s office, a key part of the process of directing funds is the inclusion of members of the public as part of the county’s ARPA evaluation teams, which will also help to ensure full transparency in spending the funds. Use of the ARPA funds will include support for Chester County’s public health response, including behavioral health; areas of negative economic impact; premium pay for essential workers; and water, sewer, and broadband infrastructure. The underlying theme in all of these areas will be to address services to disproportionately impacted communities. Seven evaluation teams will
be established by Chester County to address each priority area for ARPA funding. Each team will include representatives from Chester County government’s finance department, solicitor’s office, and strategic planning team, who will facilitate the priority groups. Three county employee volunteers and four volunteers from the community will complete each team. Specifically, the county is seeking its volunteers from a cross-section of people of all ages, genders, socioeconomic categories, and geographic areas. The volunteer commitment is expected to be average five to 10 hours per month for six months. Team members will be trained on the criteria for ARPA fund use and how to score proposals, ask additional questions, and develop recommendations for project funding. Anyone age 18 or over who lives or works in Chester County may express interest in being part of Chester County’s ARPA evaluation teams at www.chesco.org/arpa. Application forms should be submitted by Friday, Aug. 20.
have never been able to speak.” Before leaving the ceremony, Litwin remarked that his car was not quite the color he thought it was. “For me, I had an idea of what red is, and it’s not (what I thought). Red without the glasses is dark and muted. Now it pops,” he said, adding with a smile, “Now I don’t know if I would have bought that (car).” All eight pairs of color blind glasses are designed for outdoor use. BCPL will add
indoor glasses to its collection by the end of the year. All glasses will be housed at the library system headquarters in Leesport and will travel to any of the 23 member library locations when requested. Library cardholders interested in borrowing colorblind glasses should place a hold through the countywide catalog or speak with a library staff member for assistance. Mission from pg 4 The number of volunteers grew to 49 in 2018, followed by 113 in 2019. “Even during last year’s pandemic, Mission Trip Birdsboro had 108 volunteers,” Wells pointed out, noting that last year’s workers completed outdoor tasks only while wearing masks and practicing social distancing. Wells reported that because of its growth, the MTB leadership team and St. Paul’s UCC decided to have MTB become its own independent ministry as a nonprofit organization. “Next year, the ministry will continue its good works as an interfaith, interdenominational organization called Mission Trip Birdsboro & Beyond,” said Wells. A grant through Chester County’s Preservation Partnership Program will allow East Bradford Township to purchase the Starr Farm, expanding the Starr Farm Park.
Chester County Commissioners Marian Moskowitz, Josh Maxwell and Michelle Kichline approved the awarding of $4.2 million in open space preservation and park improvement grants at a recent public commissioners’ meeting. The grants are made available through Chester County’s Preservation Partnership Program, which offers funding to municipalities and nonprofit land preservation organizations. This commitment of county funds will help leverage an additional $10 million of non-county funds. The grants include the following. East Bradford Township will receive more than $1.32 million to purchase the 156-acre Starr Farm property for public recreation and natural resource protection, expanding the existing 25-acre Starr Farm Park and providing connections to several other township parks and preserves. East Pikeland Township will receive $92,390 for the construction of the Ridge Road Park, a new 16-acre park, featuring a community garden and orchard, a dog park, and paved trails. The township will also be given $250,000 for the first phase of development of the new 115-acre Hidden River Park and Preserve, including a 47-space parking lot and 2 miles of multi-use trails, including a connection to the county’s Schuylkill River Trail. West Pikeland Township will receive $80,727 for Phase 2 improvements at the new 62acre Walnut Lane Park, including adding the wearing course of the paved drive and parking area, pavement markings, shade trees, buffer trees, benches, and an information kiosk. The French & Pickering Creeks Conservation Trust will receive $180,964 for a 57-acre conservation easement on the Maxwell property in West Vincent Township, with the goals
