TVHS band is over the rainbow about new halftime show
BY FRANCINE FULTON
“There will be a whole production this year. It’s the most complex show we have ever done,” said Robert Bennett, Twin Valley High School (TVHS) director of bands, when describing this year’s football halftime show.
“There is real potential to make it amazing.”
The theme of this year’s show is “The Emerald Adventure,” with a subtitle of “Beyond the Yellow Brick Road.” The students were busy learning the music and the movements associated
with the show during a two-week band camp held at TVHS during the weeks of July 29 and Aug. 5.
The band, which has 53 members led by drum majors Ellie Trozell and Cecilia Skoniczin, was committed to rehearsing the new show despite record high temperatures that sometimes hit the triple digits. “We take a water break every 25 minutes, and they run, grab their water and come right back. The kids are totally into (band camp),” said Bennett. “It’s been a real fun band to teach because their attitudes have

Local students, teachers part of trip to Costa Rica

Ziplining, visiting a volcano park, horseback riding, touring a butterfly garden and taking part in a cooking class were just some of the activities that local students enjoyed during a nineday excursion to Costa Rica.
Participants in the trip were
students from Cocalico, Pequea Valley (PV), Ephrata and Twin Valley high schools. The students were accompanied by teacher chaperones Lori Warfel from Ephrata, Kate Gomez and Corry Bilby from Cocalico, Betsy Techman and Ruth Hernandez from Twin Valley and Jennifer Bilby from Pequea Valley.

Village Library announces programming
BY FRANCINE FULTON
As the Summer Reading Program winds down at the Village Library of Morgantown, several new activities of interest have been scheduled in August and September.
The United Way of Berks County will present a “Community Conservation” program on Tuesday, Aug. 20. Registration will take place from 5:30 to 6 p.m., followed by the gathering from 6 to 7:30 p.m.
“They are hoping for members
of the community to come out for a small group discussion to talk about their hopes and concerns for the community and if they can assist,” explained library director Carol Donahue. “It’s an open conversation and there will be light refreshments.” For more information, contact Diane Fiorentino, United Way of Berks County community impact program manager, at 610-685-4575 or dianef@ uwberks.org.
A voter education program will be offered on Tuesday, Sept. 10,

“It’s great because it’s so hands-on. There is so much to see and do,” said Jennifer. “While I love museums, this is so much more interesting and active. (The students and chaperones) were so happy they went.”
Every other year, local students have the opportunity to travel to Costa Rica in a travel cohort made up of local school students. The trip is presented by WorldStrides, a student travel company.
Students at various schools are invited to participate. “We put up signs and, in our case, told (the students) about (the trip) in our classes and we had an initial meeting for those who (were) interested,” said Jennifer, who teaches Spanish at PV High School. “At first we advertise to students in Spanish classes. Then it goes to whoever is interested.”
The cohort has traveled to Costa Rica every other year since 2012, missing only 2020 due to the pandemic. The students fundraise together, have group meetings to prepare and collect school supplies ahead of time to take to the children in Costa Rica.
Jennifer said one of the goals of the trip is for students to enhance their Spanish-speaking skills, giving them an opportunity to use the language with native speakers. “No one is required to speak Spanish, but some jump at the opportunity,” she noted. “Our guide that we had is really great with the students, so students can
practice with him if they want to before they interact with everybody else.”
As part of the trip, students and their teachers visited Arenal Volcano National Park and the hot springs there, the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve and Santa Elena Cloud Forest Reserve. They also went horseback riding, went ziplining at Arenal Mundo Aventura, visited a butterfly conservatory and ecological farm and took part in a cooking class at Playa Rayada, where they made salad, homemade corn tortillas and arroz con pollo (rice with chicken).
Other activities included participating in a boat tour of Palo Verde National Park, visiting with students at a technical school, visiting the Britt Coffee plantation and taking part in a guided sightseeing tour of San José, the capital of Costa Rica.
Jennifer said the students really enjoyed the trip because they were able to participate in community activities and see local traditions firsthand. “I think the cooking lessons and the ziplining were really a top hit with them,” she said. “The cooking was so interactive and fun, plus you get to eat (the) food (you prepare). Hot springs are always popular, too.”
When asked what the students’ favorite part of the trip was, Jennifer replied, “It’s hard to pick one. They seemed to really enjoy all of the trip.
She added that the cohort of traveling teachers will soon be planning for the 2026 trip. “We find out what the travelers like and don’t like for the next trip,” she said. “We try to make our trip better each year.”
changing to see a whole different world and make so many new fun memories. Having the opportunity to go on this trip is truly a blessing; many people only get to dream of these types of opportunities.”
“To travel is a journey
of the soul,” added Amelia Madrigal of Cocalico. The teachers also enjoyed the trip. “We watched as students and adults overcame fears and shared new experiences together, and it was beautiful,” said Techman.

The students agreed that the trip is one they will not soon forget. “Traveling together isn’t just about the places we go; it’s about the experiences we share and the memories we create,” said Adelynn Yunginger of Ephrata High School.
“It was truly the best choice I have ever made. Not only did I get to spend time with my friends and make memories that will last a lifetime, but I also got to make new friends that I would’ve never had the chance to meet if it weren’t for this trip,” said Abby Tillman of PV. “It was truly life
Eye health tips posted
UnitedHealthcare has posted healthy vision tips for kids and adults.
Eye health is an important factor in overall well-being, but many Pennsylvania children may not regularly see an eye doctor. With many kids out of school for the summer, screen time can add up quickly and contribute to health issues. UnitedHealthcare noted that myopia, also known as nearsightedness, has significantly increased over the last few decades, and this condition is connected to increased near work and the use of digital devices at close range.
To help protect their eyes, people should reduce excessive blue light exposure by following the 20-20-20 rule when using digital devices, which means taking a 20-second break every 20
minutes to focus on something 20 feet away. Likewise, spending more time outdoors can help reduce the risk of developing nearsightedness.
People should watch for common symptoms of nearsightedness such as blurred vision when looking at distant objects, the need to squint to see clearly, eye strain, and occasional headaches. Vigilance is particularly important for children because myopia can appear at an early age.
People should have a comprehensive eye exam, which can detect health problems that a screening or a school vision exam may miss. A comprehensive exam may even help to detect some health issues not usually associated with the eyes such as diabetes and certain types of cancers.

from 1 to 3 p.m. Attendees will learn about the voting process in Berks County and will be able to submit their voter registration forms online during the program.
The Village Library will also hold a community yard sale on Saturday, Sept. 14, beginning at 8 a.m. in the parking lot. Vendors are asked to register in advance by signing up for a yard sale space at the library’s front desk. A fee will be collected per space.
Local artist Anna Carter will offer an in-person watercolor class at the library on Saturday, Sept. 28, from 10 to 11 a.m. A fee will be collected per person, with proceeds benefiting the library.
During the session, which is open to people age 12 and over, attendees will paint a fall pumpkin scene using watercolors. All materials will be provided.
The workshop is targeted for beginners, and Carter will provide group and one-on-one instruction. Space is limited.
Carter may be familiar to library patrons because she offered several online art classes during the pandemic to benefit the library. She also painted a section of the mural in the library’s children’s room, which features a tree with books on its branches.
As part of the library’s efforts to offer goods for

sale from local businesses, some of Carter’s artwork is available to purchase at the library. Carter also donated note cards featuring her artwork as prizes for the Summer Reading Program.
A link to register for the art class and the community discussion group is available at www.face book.com/VillageLibrary ofMorgantown.
Ongoing programs at the library include the following: Tail Waggin’ Tutors, featuring Babes, a certified therapy dog, Monday, Aug. 19, 11 a.m. to noon; Youth Drawing Club, Aug. 19, 3 to 5 p.m., open to youths ages 10 to 18; Lego Club, Saturday, Aug. 24, 10 a.m.; and Pokémon Club, Monday, Aug. 26, 3 to 5 p.m., open to youths ages 10 to 18.
An upcoming program this fall will be an event where people may buy, sell and trade Legos. “This would be a fun opportunity for children and (adults) to downsize their collection and find other things to add,” said Donahue. The date will soon be announced.
The Village Library is located at 207 N. Walnut St., Morgantown. For more information, visit the previously mentioned Facebook page or www .villagelibrary.org. Those with questions may contact Donahue at 610286-1022 or smolibrary@ gmail.com.

been fantastic. In spite of the circumstances, they have been super positive and willing to learn.”
Bennett explained that the show is loosely based on “The Wizard of Oz.” “We will start with the overture to ‘The Wizard of Oz’ from the movie, and we move into a song from ‘Wicked,’ which is ‘One Short Day,’ and we do a song from ‘The Wiz,’ ‘Ease on Down the Road.’ Our next tune is ‘Goodbye Yellow Brick Road’ by Elton John.”
Using set changes, the show will then transition from Oz to Ireland. “Essentially, the whole show is us answering the question ‘What is beyond the yellow brick road and at the end of rainbow?’ We have this amazing castle prop that looks like the castle from ‘The Wizard of Oz.’ It will be 12 to 15 feet tall and on the ends of it (will be) mortar and brick,” Bennett explained. “There will be eight set pieces that will go around the field with yellow brick roads on them. They will flip over when we transition to the Emerald Isle, and on the back will be a four-leaf clover.”
There will also be a rainbow and pot of gold.
“The connection point is the rainbow,” he added. “What is over the rainbow is the Emerald Isle. (The theme of) ‘Somewhere
from pg 1
Over the Rainbow’ is such a pivotal part of that story in ‘The Wizard of Oz’ that a (rainbow) is a natural connection.”
He credits the design team for coming up with the concept for this year, including Kim Robinson, band front/color guard assistant; Duane DeWire, drill writer and show coordinator; and Brett Hanley, assistant band director.
Bennett said the goal of the performance is to please the audience that watches during home TVHS football games, as well as those who attend and judge band competitions. “When we do a show, we try to make it something that the audience enjoys here at football games,” he noted. “When we go out and do competitions and band festivals, it is a totally different kind of audience. It’s an audience that will appreciate it differently.”
He said it is also important for the band members to enjoy performing the show. “We obviously try to make it fun for the kids to play. It challenges them and helps them develop as musicians and performers,” said Bennett, adding, “If it hits those three boxes where the community likes it and the competition audiences and judges like it and the kids like it, we are doing the right thing.”
Webinar series to explore stream repair
A Backyard Stream Repair
Series of live webinars will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays, Aug. 27 to Sept. 10, from 2 to 3:30 p.m.
Each session will present a step-by-step DIY process that homeowners and landowners can use to repair streams that are getting deeper or wider. The techniques are meant to be simple and affordable. Penn State Extension noted that stream repair can lead to improved bank stability and reduced
erosion, saving property from washing away; added property value; reduced water pollution; available habitat for many types of wildlife; and other benefits.
There is a fee, and registration is required at https://tinyurl.com/Back yardStreamRepair. A link to the recorded webinar will be emailed to registrants after the live event, and the recording will be accessible for six months from the event date.

Trust to present Third Saturday program
Re-enactor Kevin O’Donnell will be the guest speaker.
As part of its Third Saturday summer series, the Historic Preservation Trust of Berks County will present a program on the Pennsylvania long rifle on Saturday, Aug. 17, beginning at 11 a.m. at the White Horse Inn, 31 Old Philadelphia Pike, Douglassville. Kevin O’Donnell will present the program, providing a history of the Pennsylvania long rifle and sharing artwork featuring the firearm. While the iconic rifle used in the settlement of the United States is often called the Kentucky rifle, its origin is mainly in Pennsylvania. The various places where the rifles were made developed their own specific styles. These styles, or schools, are distinctive to the areas where the rifles were made. The rifles featured artistic designs and figures that were carved into the wood or
engraved into the metal decorations.
O’Donnell is a re-enactor with the First Pennsylvania Regiment, which portrays riflemen from the early part of the Revolutionary War, and he has been shooting flintlock rifles for 40 years. O’Donnell was trained as a gunsmith at the Jacobsburg Historical Society, where he took apprentice classes. A suggested donation will be received at the door. All proceeds will benefit the Trust. For more details about the Trust or the program, call 610-385-4762. Information about the Trust is also available at www.historicpreser vationtrust.org.
