young adults, creating an experience and a pre-professional production unlike any other,” McDonnell added. The production includes middle school, high school and college students who took part in the Broadway workshop, which ran from late May until opening weekend. “We always have done a teen show in the summer. This year, we stepped it up a notch to give them a more professional experience,” McDonnell noted. “It was a like a repertory experience. They worked as if they were hired to be an actor in a repertory (traveling) show.”

“Newsies” is based on the historical newsboy strike of 1899 and revolves around poor and orphaned teenagers in New York City, selling newspapers for a penny a paper. They take on newspaper moguls William Randolph Hearst and Joseph Pulitzer, who are trying to take away more of their meager profits. Jack Kelly becomes the leader who rallies the newsies from across the city to take a stand and strike against the most powerful publishers in the country. Their cause becomes even bigger than any of the newsies imagined when they realize they are fighting for all the children working in unfair and unsafe conditions across the country. “(We are presenting) the full Broadway version,” stated McDonnell. “This is a really fun musical that is family-friendly.” “Newsies the Musical” received 23 major theatrical nominations, including eight Tony Award nominations, winning the Tony Award for Best Score and Best Choreography. Tickets are available at www.steelriver.org or by calling the box office at 610-970-1199. Cast photos and biographies can be found at www.facebook.com /TriPACVillage. The students are from various countries, including China, Taiwan and Ukraine, and they currently reside in the Honey Brook, Exton, Chester Springs, Downingtown and West Chester areas. The church began offering ESL classes two years ago. “A young man from Sri Lanka who goes to church here asked if we could start a class to teach English,” said Susan Vandenberg, who coordinates the program along with Mary Ann Thomas. “It started small with one-on-one (classes), and the (program) gradually grew.” Vandenberg said that last year 70 students took part in the ESL program at the church. “We have people from Puerto Rico, Venezuela, Ecuador - all kinds of nationalities,” Vandenberg said. “We do a testing on each person and interview them to see what level they are going to be in. They will stay in that level until the teacher (determines) they can go to the next level.” Students are invited to purchase a workbook to use throughout the program. The classes mostly consist of conversations among participants. “The main point is to get them to

Students also take part in social activities to encourage their conversational skills. “We had a big traditional Thanksgiving dinner last year, and we invited their families,” said Vandenberg. “We also had an end-ofyear party. “Once a month ... all the classes come together for a halfhour break,” she added. “ We sing or present the Gospel message through PowerPoint or play a game.” The church has a staff of 17

WoolyAkita. Yannessa will also offer treat bags for a donation. Each bag will contain a dog or cat treat and a pet toy. The pantry will also be the beneficiary of a local charity 5K run that will be held at the Fork & Ale, 1281 E. Main St., Douglassville, on Wednesday, Aug. 22. Registration for the event will begin at 5:45 p.m.; the race will start at 6:30 p.m. The 5K is part of the Schuylkill River Trail Charity 5K Series, for which an event is held on the fourth Wednesday of each month from April through September. For more details and to register, readers may visit www.AlphaAndOmegaSports.com, choose Race Calendar and then select “4th Wednesday @ Fork & Ale.” Proceeds from treat bag sales

at Final Friday and the 5K race will benefit AHP, whose mission is to keep companion pets at home and out of shelters by providing donated pet food and pet care services to families in financial need. The pantry, which began in 2010, serves residents of Berks, Chester and Montgomery counties. Yannessa noted that the families that are being helped by the pantry include returning military veterans and retired veterans living on a fixed income, senior citizens and families facing medical health challenges. “In 2017, we donated 205,000 pounds of dry food and 62,000 cans of food to horses, dogs, cats, rabbits, birds and small animals,” she reported. She said that future plans call for offering a Meals on Wheelstype program to deliver pet food. “In 2019, it is our hope to start an AniMeals Program, as well as

(obtain) vouchers and grants for emergency veterinary care and low-cost vaccinations,” Yannessa stated. “Animal House Project hopes with grants and financial donations to operate as a fullservice organization.” The community is invited to contribute to the effort by donating dry and canned pet food. Donations can be brought to the pantry, 1055 S. Hanover St., Suite 1, Pottstown, and placed in the collection bin. The site is located in North Coventry Township at the intersection of Hanover Street and Cedarville Road. “Our biggest need right now is financial donations to cover operational expenses - our rent, utilities, fuel for our trucks, insurance (and more),” Yannessa added. AHP is also seeking volunteers willing to provide assistance during pet food distribution days. Pet food distributions take place at the pantry on the first Saturday of

ingtown West High School, Adams decided that his longtime interest in helping others made law enforcement a logical career choice. Although his family has a strong history of military service, Adams was the first to pursue police work. He received his Act 120 certification from the Delaware County Community College Police Academy in 2013. When he is not working, Adams enjoys spending time with his family as well as playing golf. John grew up in Oxford, and after graduating from Oxford Area High School, he found a niche for his mechanical talents in the aerospace industry,

where he built parts for private jets and helicopters. About five years, he became interested in changing gears. A close friend, former Chester County Deputy Sheriff Kevin Brough, urged John to consider law enforcement, especially the Sheriff’s Office. John graduated from the Delaware County Community College Police Academy in 2016 and began working for the Lincoln University Police Department. In his spare time, John enjoys spending time with his family. He and his wife have three children, ranging in age from 7 months to 11 years, and a fourth child is on the way. John can also often be

found making repairs or improvements to cars or exercising his passion for motorcycles. Although Marasco was born in Wilmington, Del., his family moved to Chester County when he was an infant. He considers himself a Coatesville native since he grew up in that area. He experienced strong military and law-enforcement influences from multiple family members, but he did not decide to follow that lead until after earning a bachelor’s degree in international business from Widener University. Since then, Marasco obtained a real estate license, traveled around the world, and joined the Pennsylvania Army National

The theme of the August event is “Dog Days of Summer.” Activities will take place along the 200 block of Main Street in Parkesburg. Representing Animal House Project will be board president Mary Beth Yannessa and Yoshi, the charity’s spokespuppy. “We will be doing ‘pooch smooches,’” Yannessa said. “For a donation, people will able be to get a kiss from Yoshi.” Readers may learn about Yoshi at www.facebook.com/YoshiThe

“Sometimes (judges) want the serious military style and sometimes the performance style,” Tia explained. “In the beginning (of the routine), you have to be very military. You have to march and do signals to show them your rifle. Once I (finished that portion), I was a performer and started smiling and having fun.” She said her routine was choreographed in advance and required a lot of practice. be able to walk LGLC’s nature trail, located on the church property. According to LGLC worship leader Sue Fessenbecker, one of the event organizers, the joint effort began earlier this year when members of local churches that were being led by interim pastors met to discuss the issues of finding a permanent pastor. “Lutherans have a lengthy process (for appointing a pastor),” she explained, noting that pastors in search of a new appointment are matched with churches who are seeking a pastor based on their profiles. Candidates are then interviewed and voted on by the congregation. “(Getting together) was a joint effort between Messiah and Living God Lutheran churches, which were both without pastors

and decided to meet and join resources,” Fessenbecker continued. “We all struggle with ... how long the process takes, and we get discouraged. We try to keep everyone upbeat. We know it will happen in God’s time, and we are here to support each other.” The churches’ first joint activity was in March, when they took part in a private screening of “I Can Only Imagine” at a local movie theater. Fessenbecker said that last year, LGLC members attended a community worship service at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in West Brandywine. “That’s kind of what we wanted to do, but it evolved into a fellowship picnic for us to get to know each other,” she noted, adding that LGLC reached out to other nearby Lutheran churches when planning the picnic. “We really enjoyed worshipping with Catholics and Presbyterians, Episcopalians and others (at the community service at St. Peter’s),” she added. “With all that’s happening in the

For more information on how to contribute to the dinner, readers may email meal coordinator Kathleen Weaver at kmw54_405@hotmail.com. In the monthly food pantry newsletter, Howard Moss, who runs the pantry along with his wife, Carol, reported that in July, the TVFP served 140 families, representing 571 people. He credited the community for the success of the pantry, which has distributed more than 1 million pounds of food since it opened at Conestoga Mennonite Church in 2009. Prior to that, the pantry was located at Morgantown Methodist Church for more than 15 years. “We distributed approximately 16,500 pounds of food, personal health and hygiene items,” Moss reported, thanking donors in the

We will also have a scavenger hunt along the nature trail.” LGLC expects between 100 and 125 attendees at the upcoming picnic. “The goal is to celebrate the Lutheran tradition and make new friends,” Fessenbecker added. It ranges from three to six pounds,” she said. “Just like baton, you measure it, and it has to be 35 percent longer than your arms.” Tia said that at times twirlers drop their batons or rifles or make mistakes in their routine. The key is to keep performing. “You keep going, make things up if you have to and try your best,” she said. Tia said she enjoyed competing at AYOP and meeting other competitors from around the country. “We all have one thing in common: Everyone there loved to twirl and loved to have fun,” she said. “I met a lot of people who were nice and supportive.” Future plans for Tia include adding twirling a sabre to her routine this fall. community for contributing financially or for coordinating food drives. “Thank you all for the hundreds of volunteer hours each month making this important community mission possible. We can always use help volunteering at the TVFP. Please consider joining (us) this month.” The pantry is also seeking financial contributions, as well as donations of food and other items. Items can be dropped off at the Conestoga Mennonite Church office on Tuesdays through Fridays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Those who cannot drop off food donations at the designated times may schedule a time to donate by emailing Moss at hamoss@ptd.net. Items that are needed by the pantry include sugar, cereal, paper products, laundry detergent, dishwashing soap and bars of soap, as well as beverages such as soda, water and fruit juices that do not require refrigeration. Fresh vegetables, fruits and eggs are always welcome a few days before a distribution. Grilled Chicken And Onion Skewers Grilling is many people’s preferred method of cooking, perhaps because it combines the great outdoors with delicious food. When grilling, many people are comfortable sticking with traditional backyard barbecue fare, such as hot dogs and hamburgers. Those who want to expand their grilling horizons can try the simple recipe for Grilled Chicken and Onion Skewers from Amy Kaneko’s “Let’s Cook Japanese Food!” (Chronicle Books).

Instructions: 1 - Place 10 to 12 bamboo skewers in water to cover at least 30 minutes before grilling. Prepare a medium-hot fire in a charcoal grill or preheat a gas grill to medium-high. 2 - If using the basting sauce, in a small saucepan, combine the soy sauce, mirin, and sugar over medium-low heat and cook, stirring until the sugar has completely dissolved and the liquid just begins to turn syrupy, 5 to 8 minutes. Remove from the heat and set aside in a small bowl. 3 - Drain the skewers. Thread the chicken pieces alternately with the onion pieces onto the skewers, using about 3 pieces of chicken and 2 pieces of onion for each skewer. As each skewer is ready, place on a plate. Brush the chicken and onion pieces lightly on all sides with the oil. 4 - The grilling goes quickly, so set up a workstation next to the grill before beginning: the plate holding the skewers, the bowl of sauce and a basting brush and/or the salt, and tongs for turning the skewers. If using the basting sauce, either dip each skewer in the sauce or brush the sauce on the skewers and then place directly over the heat. Grill the skewers, turning 3 or 4 times and basting with additional sauce, until the chicken is cooked through and the onions are scorched around the edges, about 5 minutes total. If the sauce appears to be burning at any point, move the skewers to a cooler part of the grill, or reduce the heat if using a gas grill. If using salt instead of the basting sauce, place the skewers directly over the heat and grill, turning 3 or 4 times, until cooked through, about 5 minutes total. Sprinkle both sides of each skewer with salt and remove from the grill. Serve the skewers piping hot.

CrossNet Plans Annual Garden Gala By Ann Mead Ash

Galas are special events. They give attendees a chance to dress up and enjoy food and conversation in lovely surroundings. For Meredith Dahl, director of CrossNet Ministries, the organization’s annual Garden Gala is also a chance to show appreciation. “I just want to say thank you to our community sponsors for making this possible,” she said, “and for continuing to support CrossNet Ministries and our mission to offer help and hope in the name of Jesus Christ to people in the ELANCO community. You are making a difference.” CrossNet’s third Garden Gala is slated for Saturday, Sept. 15, at 6:30 p.m. in the Legacy Gardens at Garden Spot Village, 433 S. Kinzer Ave., New Holland. The evening will include tapas-style food at a number of stations located throughout the garden. Attendees will be able to visit the stations, which will lead to a large tent

where beverages and desserts will be found. “There will be a lot of yummy food to fill people up,” noted Dahl. The menu for the gala was chosen by event coordinator Allison Cuthie from a selection offered by Garden Spot Village in partnership with another food provider. The 2018 menu will include assorted canapés, a charcutier station, and stations featuring Brazilian, Asian, and Italian foods. Beverages will include sparkling soda and infused water, along with mock cocktails. Brewed and cold infused coffees will also be served. The dessert display will feature assorted mini sweet shots and petit fours, along with Japanese steamed cakes. “It will be delicious,” said Dahl. “We (have received) so many compliments on the food (from past gala attendees).” Organizers have also arranged for attendees to enjoy live music under the stars. Dahl explained that organizers

like to say the recommended dress for the evening is “date-night attire.” “It’s a gala, but it’s not full-on formal,” she said. “(How to dress for the event) can be confusing, so we say date night,” she added. “You can dress up, but you don’t have to go all out.” A local photographer will be onsite to take free photos for attendees. According to Dahl, the gala offers guests a relaxing evening in a beautiful setting. “There is no formal program,” explained Dahl, who said she plans only to give a short speech of appreciation at the event. “This is a time to just come and eat and relax and hang out with friends. People who have attended in the past have shared that they enjoyed a fun night out with family and friends knowing that it supports CrossNet.” CrossNet Ministries offers a variety of programs to the community, including a youth center, social services programs, Power Packs, a

food pantry, a summer lunch program, after-school programs for elementary-age students, and more. The ministry currently operates from three locations on Franklin Street in New Holland. Dahl noted that the gala is distinctly different from the ministry’s other two major fundraisers, which include the Extraordinary Give and the organization’s annual banquet. “The gala is different,” she stated. “It’s (all about having) fun. If you’re looking for a fun night to support CrossNet, this is an event you won’t want to miss.” Funds raised by the gala are derived from ticket sales and sponsorships. Garden Gala organizers hope to raise $50,000 for the ministry’s general fund. The gala will be held rain or shine. Tickets are limited for the alcohol-free event. Although researchers have not yet determined a way to prevent Alzheimer’s disease, adults can take certain steps to maintain their mental acuity into retirement. Routine exercise may be most associated with physical benefits, but the NIA notes that such activity has been linked to benefits for the brain as well. Alzheimer’s disease. Learning about Alzheimer’s and how to maintain mental acuity can help aging men and women better understand the changes their brains might be undergoing as they near or pass retirement age. The National Institute on Aging notes that only a very rare form of Alzheimer’s disease is inherited. Early-onset familial Alzheimer’s disease, or FAD, is caused by mutations in certain genes. If these genes are passed down from parent to child, then the child is likely, but not certain, to get FAD. So while many adults may be concerned about Alzheimer’s because one of their parents had the disease, the NIA notes that the majority of Alzheimer’s cases are late-

Aging is associated with a host of mental and physical side effects. For example, many adults expect their vision to deteriorate as they grow older. Such a side effect can be combatted with routine eye examinations that may indicate a need for a stronger eyeglass prescription, a relatively simple solution that will not impact adults’ daily lives much at all. The Department of Health shares important tips to keep families safe in extreme heat this summer. During the heat, it is important to protect oneself from harmful ultraviolet radiation and stay hydrated to prevent heat-related illnesses. Several safety tips are recommended to help people prepare for the summer weather. People should remember to wear lightweight, loose-fitting, light-colored clothing; a hat or visor; sunglasses; and SPF 15 or higher sunscreen and reapply as necessary. To stay hydrated, people should drink plenty of water throughout the day and not wait until they are thirsty; outdoor workers should drink between two and four cups of water every hour; avoid consuming caffeinated, alcoholic, or sugary beverages; and replace salt lost from sweating by drinking fruit juice or sports drinks. To safely exercise during the summer, people should limit outdoor exercise and stay indoors in air conditioning on hot days; exercise early in the morning or later in the evening to avoid the hottest part of the day from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.; and pace oneself when running, walking, or otherwise exerting one’s body.

To protect others, children, older adults, or pets should never be left behind in a vehicle. Individuals who may be more at risk from extreme temperatures should be checked on, including infants and young children, people age 65 and older, and people with chronic medical conditions. It is also important to know the difference between heat-related illnesses, like heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Symptoms of a heat stroke include a high body temperature (above 103 F); red, hot, and dry skin, but no sweating; a rapid, strong pulse; throbbing headache; dizziness; nausea; confusion; and unconsciousness. If someone is having a heat stroke, it is important to first call 91-1. After calling for help, the person should be taken to a shady area and cooled down quickly by putting them in a tub of cool water or spraying them with a garden hose. The victim should not be given any fluids, including water, to drink. Symptoms of heat exhaustion include heavy sweating, paleness, muscle cramps, tiredness, weakness, dizziness, headache, fainting, and nausea or vomiting. The person should be assisted in cooling off and seek medical attention if symptoms are severe, symptoms

Information from pg 11 aerobic exercise training increases the size of the hippocampus, leading to improvements in spatial memory. The NIA also notes that one study indicated exercise stimulated the brain’s ability to maintain old network connections and make new ones vital to cognitive health. Avid readers may be happy to learn that one of their favorite pastimes can improve the efficiency of their cognitive systems while delaying such systems’ decline. A 2013 study published in the journal “Neurology” by researchers at Chicago’s Rush University Medical Center found that mentally active lifestyles may not prevent the formations of plaques and tangles

associated with Alzheimer’s disease, but such lifestyles decreases the likelihood that the presence of plaques or tangles will impair cognitive function. Maintaining social connections with family, friends, and community members also can help women prevent cognitive decline. Epidemiologist Bryan James of the Rush Alzheimer’s Disease Center studied how social activity affected cognitive decline, ultimately noting that the rate of cognitive decline was considerably lower among men and women who maintained social contact than it was among those with low levels of social activity.

last more than one hour, or the victim has heart problems or high blood pressure. During extreme heat waves, cooling centers are opened in cities across Pennsylvania for individuals without air conditioning. To

find a cooling center, readers may contact the local municipality or county office. Additional information on how to prepare for summer weather can be found at www.health.pa.gov.

Precautions For Summer Posted Pennsylvania residents and visitors are urged to take precautions to avoid ticks and mosquitoes when spending time outdoors this summer. Spending time outdoors and participating in physical activity is a key part of living a healthy life; however, people need to be aware of ticks and mosquitoes and the serious diseases they carry. As Lyme disease and West Nile virus become more prevalent in Pennsylvania, it is important for people to protect themselves when spending time outdoors. This year, funding was bolstered to protect Pennsylvanians from Lyme disease, Zika virus, and West Nile virus through increases to improve mosquito and tick surveillance and provide education about the diseases associated with these insects. Through simple means like wearing insect repellent and avoiding peak mosquito activity times, Pennsylvanians can reduce their risks of mosquito bites and possibly being exposed to West Nile Virus. In 2017, there were 11,900 cases of Lyme disease recorded in Pennsylvania. Throughout the last several years, the state has consistently recorded one of the highest counts of suspected Lyme disease cases in the United States. Blacklegged ticks, also known as deer ticks, are the most common carrier of Lyme disease. Ticks typically thrive in tall grass, brush, and wooded areas, but deer ticks have been found in every county in the state and can live in any habitat. Ticks can infect humans year-round, but are most likely to do so from late spring through the summer months. Whether visiting one of Pennsylvania’s 121 state parks or hiking through more than 2.2 million acres of state forestland, outdoors enthusiasts must be aware of their surroundings. The first line of defense against Lyme disease and any other tick-borne illness is to avoid tick-infested habitats, such as areas dense with shrubbery or tall grass. Proper use of personal protective measures such as repellents and protective clothing are also essential when enjoying public lands. Before heading outdoors, it is important to cover exposed

skin, wear lightweight and light-colored clothing to aid in insect detection, and use an insect repellent containing 20 percent or more DEET. Once returning home, people should immediately check themselves, children, and pets for ticks. Then, individuals should take a shower to remove any ticks that may be attached to their skin. Clothing and gear should be checked carefully and put in the dryer on high to kill any ticks. Symptoms of Lyme disease can include a bull’s-eye rash, fever, chills, headache, fatigue, muscle and joint aches, and swollen lymph nodes. It is important to know that someone bit by a tick carrying Lyme disease may not always get a bull’s-eye rash. Anyone who believes they have been bitten by a tick should speak to a doctor immediately. Antibiotic treatment during the early stages of Lyme disease can help prevent the onset of more severe symptoms. If not treated promptly, Lyme disease may lead to severe health concerns affecting the heart, joints, and nervous system. West Nile virus is spread by mosquitoes that breed in areas with standing and stagnant water. These areas include urban catch basins, clogged gutters, discarded tires, poorly maintained swimming pools, flower pots, roof gutters, and other containers that hold water. The Department of Environmental Protection surveys communities affected by West Nile virus each year and monitors cases of the virus in humans, mosquitoes, birds, and horses. In 2017, there were 20 human cases of West Nile virus reported in Pennsylvania. So far in 2018, no positive human cases have been reported. Symptoms of West Nile virus are often flulike and can include a fever, headache, body aches, rash, and swollen lymph nodes, and typically only last a few days. However, West Nile virus can cause a serious neurological infection, including encephalitis and meningitis. Symptoms of these infections include a severe headache, high fever, muscle weakness, neck stiffness, paralysis, possible confusion and disorientation, tremors, and even a coma.
