Sharing kindness through flowers

“I wanted to give away flowers to help spread kindness and make people happy,” said Adah Lake, 10, of Morgantown, the founder of Kindness Blooms, which provides

free bouquets of freshly picked flowers from the family’s backyard to community members.

The effort began last summer, when Adah began offering free flowers to members of the Twin Valley Gift and Take Facebook

exhibitions and a display of projects highlighted the Chester County 4-H Fair, held from Aug. 7 to 12 at the Romano 4-H Center in Honey Brook.

During the animal shows, 4-H members were given an opportunity to demonstrate their skills and knowledge in the handling of beef cattle, dairy cattle, goats, horses, pigs and sheep.

A Dairy Cattle Show, held on Aug. 11, was judged by Christine Williams. “She is looking at characteristics such as structure and how well the (cow) stands and walks,” explained Extension education Toni Stuetz. “These cows are junior animals, so they have never given birth. Senior animals are bovines that have given birth.”

“There are six different breeds of cows represented here,” Stuetz added. “They show by their breed.”

While many people think of dairy cows with black and white or red and white coloring, some dairy cows can be one solid color. “Most people think of them with specks, but (some) are very dark animals,” Stuetz noted. “For the kids, it is easier for them to keep (the solid-colored cows) clean than those with a lot of white.”

“We have 509 4-H club members in Chester County, and we reach another 2,000 (children and youths) through various outreach programs.”

Williams also provided feedback to the competitors. “The kids are told to watch the judge and listen to what the judge says,” Stuetz pointed out. “The judge told one of the girls that her cow’s hoofs should have

been trimmed sooner. It helps it walk better and look better and be healthier.”

In the project display area, visitors could view items completed by 4-H members from throughout Chester County such as quilts, woodworking, arts and crafts, clothing and more.

“There are 286 projects, which is (an increase of) about 40 or 50 from last year,” said Stuetz, noting that some of the woodworking projects were displayed in the center’s hallway because of their size. “It’s a good turnout for the kids. We have some new clubs, and we encouraged them to come (to the fair).”

She noted that 4-H clubs have been added through the years in areas such as robotics and STEM, computer coding and veterinary science. “It’s so diverse. (Members) of cooking club … are also on our robotics team,” said Stuetz. “It’s fun to see the traditional things that

Kelly Brannan of Morgantown, a 2023 graduate of Grove City College, was part of a team of students that built a unique self-contained aquaponics system that was used to grow lettuce in a city garden for a community in need.

The growing system, which included a series of tanks that used the flow of water to turn fish waste into fertilizer, was designed and built by students in Engineers With a Mission, a community service organization. “I was a member my

senior year because they needed people to help with the fish and the plants,” said Brannan, who majored in biology.

In May, members of the Grove City College student organization installed the sustainable growing system at a community garden supported by Envision Cleveland, a Christian Missionary and Alliance ministry. “We built it in Grove City to make sure it worked and to iron out any problems before we got to Cleveland,” explained Brannan. “We disassembled it and reassembled it in Cleveland. For the first time, the Chester County 4-H Teen Council held a Field Day event on Aug. 13. “Our Teen Council is trying to spread the word about 4-H and get the kids to come together to have a social day after all the hard work,” Stuetz noted.

Three centuries of worship

In the back of the church where the Weaverland Anabaptist Faith Community meets at 210 Weaverland Valley Road, East Earl, there is a hallway decorated with historical plaques dedicated to the faith story of Weaverland. “There is a tremendous history and story of God’s faithfulness even through World War I and World War II,” said Brian Martin, lead pastor and bishop, who recounted how pacifists were jailed during World War I, but during World War II lent their talents to the community in work camps due in part to the farm furlough plan, which was written by Weaverland members Israel B. Good and Ben Weaver, working with Congressman William Griest. “We have a copy of a handwritten letter from Woodrow Wilson (dated Nov. 19, 1917), noting I.B. Good and Ben Weaver and calling the bill a good thing,” said Brian.

On Saturday, Oct. 7, and Sunday,

Oct. 8, the church will celebrate “300 Years of God’s Faithfulness” with an event that will include bus tours, worship, a fellowship meal and presentation, and cemetery tours. The celebration is based on the arrival of the three Weber brothers from Switzerland on the 3,000 acres they were granted by William Penn in 1723 in what is now called the Weaverland Valley. Weaver is the anglicized version of the German Weber.

On Oct. 7, bus tours will leave the church at 9 a.m. and again at 1 p.m. Tour guide Ken Sensenig, known for his historical knowledge and storytelling abilities, will lead tour takers to more than a dozen sites, including early homes along Weaverland Road, the Peter Martin Cabin, the Pike Meetinghouse, the Groffdale Mennonite Church, and several cemeteries, including the Old Weberthal Cemetery. Lunch will be included with both tours. Individuals interested in taking part may visit www.weaverland.org and click

on “Anniversary Weekend Events” to register. There is a cost to take a tour.

On Oct. 8, worship services at 8 and 10:30 a.m. will include “Remembering Our Story,” with Keith Weaver, retired LMC - a Fellowship of Anabaptist Churchesmoderator and bishop, followed by “Pressing Forward in Christ” with Rodney Martin, member of the LMC bishop elder team, and “Inviting Our Story to Be My Story,” by Brian. group. When the blooms are available, her mother, Anne, posts the information on the Facebook page.

For this year, Adah, with help from her mother and father, Steve, constructed a flower stand to display the flowers in front of the family home. The stand, which is wooden with an aluminum roof, is made from all recycled materials.

“Last week, we gave way 12 or 13,” Anne said. “They go pretty quickly. Sometimes when they are gone, we scramble to make more throughout the day.”

working with were called Envision Cleveland, and they have a big community garden and they had two

greenhouses set up there. We assembled the project in one of the greenhouses.”

According to Brannan, water was pumped from a holding tank into the fish tank, which contained about a dozen tilapia. Water then flowed into a solids filtration tank, where the fish waste sank to the bottom and the nitrates the system used as fertilizer rose to the top. That tank was fed into a grow bed filled with clay pebbles where seeds and plants were fed by the fertilizer and the water moving through it.

“The system was meant to run all summer and keep the plants in there growing,” Brannan noted. “At the end of the grow season, (people) were able to eat the fish as well.”

She said that the hydroponics system produced fresh lettuce. “That area in Cleveland is called a ‘food desert.’ Even though they are in a major city, they don’t always have access to fresh fruits and vegetables,” Brannan said. “The goal of the project and community garden is to get fresh fruits and vegetables to people who live in that city.”

While there, the college students were able to meet some of the clients of Envision Cleveland and assist with other projects. “They had some raised beds in the garden, and there was a rain barrel project they were working on, and we were able to help out with that,” said Brannan. “You have to be willing to serve and provide help in any capacity needed.”

While designing and building the system, the students learned some real-world lessons in project management, communication, logistics and fundraising. “We had an electrical engineering team, a mechanical engineering team, a fluids team and a bio team,” said Brannan. “We all had to make sure we were communicating and on the same page both during the brainstorming and the building process. Communication and teamwork were a big thing.”

She noted that both these skills, along with a willingness to provide assistance to others, will come in handy this fall at her new jobteaching science and Bible to sixthgrade students at High Point Baptist Academy in Geigertown.

“She has worked hard this year making our new stand and growing flowers from seed that we started way back in February,” said Anne.

The bouquets feature several flower varieties. “We have blackeyed Susans, daises and cone flowers,” Adah pointed out.

“We grew sunflowers from seed for this purpose,” Anne added.

Adah crafted a sign for the stand, which reads, “Free bouquets to make your day.” In addition, one of the recipients of the flowers created a hanging sign for the stand modeled after Adah’s cardboard version.

At the newly constructed stand, Adah places the small bouquets in containers filled with water, which are free to anyone who stops by. “We use aluminum cans that we recycle, or people have given us vases or jelly jars. We use anything (we can),” said Anne, noting that some flower recipients have donated empty containers.

Since the effort began, Adah has given out more than 35 bouquets.

Adah’s parents pointed out that the Twin Valley Elementary Center, where Adah attended, promotes community service and holds an annual random acts of kindness challenge.

“Beyond something that we encourage as parents, Twin Valley Elementary Center always encourages kindness. That was their theme,” said Anne. “That was engrained in (Adah) from the wonderful staff and administration at the school.”

Adah will begin classes this fall at Twin Valley Middle School, where her brother, Harper, attends. She plans to continue to give away flowers as long as blooms are available.

“We love gardening, and Adah loves gardening with me,” Anne said.

Outdoor enthusiasts invited to join BVSA

The Brandywine Valley Ski Association (BVSA) is a nonprofit Chester County-based organization that organizes social activities for those who enjoy the outdoors. Activities include picnics, kayaking, bike rides, outdoor concerts, pool parties, Friday happy hours and ski trips.

“We have many members that are not skiers but enjoy the club for its activities and the opportunity to meet new friends,” said Harold Lamb, a member of the BVSA activities committee.

BVSA will hold a prospective new member informational meeting on Wednesday, Sept. 6, at 7 p.m. at the Thorndale Inn, 430 Bondsville Road, Downingtown. “At the meeting, we will have an overview of the purpose of the club, which is really to provide fun, social opportunities for people who enjoy the outdoors,” said Lamb. For the upcoming ski season, the club, which is affiliated with the

Eastern Pennsylvania Ski Council (EPSC), is organizing trips to Switzerland and Aspen Snowmass and Breckenridge, Col. A weeklong bike and barge trip along the Rhine River in the Netherlands is scheduled for the end of September.

“(At the meeting), we will have flyers of trips we are offering this year,” said Lamb. “The bike and barge trip is already sold out, but the other trips have open slots.” The meeting will also include a display of

photos of past outings and trips.

BVSA members are asked to pay an annual fee, with separate prices for couples, families and individuals. In addition to a monthly newsletter that lists club activities, members receive reciprocal membership to the EPSC and the National Ski Council.

The club is open to adults of all ages. “(Most members) are from throughout Chester County,” Lamb said, noting that other members hail

service will feature author and historian John Ruth presenting “This Very Ground, This Crooked Affair.” “In the afternoon, there will be a walking tour of the two cemeteries here (at the church),” said Brian, who noted the tours will be led by Sensenig. Brian, who, like many church members, can trace his family heritage back to early settlers in the area, noted that the first church, a log cabin, was built at the present location in 1733. A stone building was constructed in 1766. “There have been a number of builds over the years,” said Brian, with the present building dating to 1926. “We have expanded at least three times since it was built,” said Brian, who added that the church was remodeled in 1972 and that expansions occurred in 1987 and again in 2015.

The congregation is working on a booklet to commemorate the 300year anniversary of the church, and Brian noted that small celebrations have been occurring all year. “Each month, we have been including a God Story in our worship service,” he said. “We entitled (that segment) ‘Celebrating 300 Years of God’s Faithfulness: Remembering Our Story, Pressing Forward in Christ.’” Readers who have specific questions may call the church at 717445-6348.
