TVHS Mini-THON club continues its fundraising efforts

Even though school was not in session, members of the Twin Valley High School (TVHS) Mini-THON club were still busy this summer with fundraising activities to benefit Four Diamonds, a nonprofit organization with a mission to conquer childhood cancer.

The most recent fundraiser was a car wash held on Aug. 25 at the Twin Valley Elementary Center in Elverson. Visitors were asked to make a donation to the charity in return for a free car wash. Club volunteers and Lance Chappelle,

Mini-THON club adviser, were on hand to wash cars.

Ashley Siv, who is the club overall and was selected for the 2024-25 Mini-THON Ambassadors program, reported that Chappelle and the students washed more than 30 cars during the event, which ran from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

“We raised $1,108 from the car wash, which is the most we have ever raised from a car wash before,” said Ashley. “We are having our next car wash on Harmony Day in Honey Brook on Sept. 21.” Club members will be available from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

to wash cars for a donation at the Honey Brook American Legion, 4820 Horseshoe Pike (Route 322,) Honey Brook.

Earlier this summer, the club held pickleball nights on June 20 and July 22. “In June and July, we had pickleball fundraisers at the high school tennis courts,” Ashley noted. “People paid an entry fee and there was a doubles and a singles tournament. The winners received Chick-fil-A gift cards.”

She said pickelball night was a first-time event, and each installment featured the tournaments as well as open play for people

People in need of free food now have a new place to pick up nonperishable food items - Living God Lutheran Church (LGLC) in Honey Brook, which opened a Little Free Pantry on Sept. 1.

Inside the box, people will find items like canned chicken and tuna, peanut butter, canned fruits and vegetables, pasta sauce and pasta, rice and beans, cereals, protein bars, canned soups, boxed macaroni and cheese and shelf-stable milk.

Hay Creek Festival to feature food, live music, re-enactments and more

The community is invited to attend the 48th annual Hay Creek Festival, to be held on Friday through Sunday, Sept. 6 through 8, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at historic Joanna Furnace, 1250 Furnace Road, Geigertown. Attendees will be able to savor seasonal treats, enjoy live music, purchase handmade arts and crafts and learn about the past through re-enactments and displays. The festival, which is being presented by the Hay Creek Valley Historical Association (HCVHA), will also feature children’s activities and a display of antique vehicles and machinery.

A highlight of this year’s festival will be a Civil War encampment. This year, re-enactors will be from Thompson’s Independent Battery C, which is new to the

of all skill levels. “The first time (in June) we had about 40 participants,” Ashley said. “It was mostly adults because a lot of them are in actual pickleball leagues. We also had open play, so if people didn’t want to do the tournament, they could play against other people there.”

Next up for the club will be the Gold Out football game, scheduled for Friday, Sept. 13, when TVHS plays Eastern Lebanon County High School at 7 p.m. “At the game, we will run the snack stand, and we will have a MiniTHON Minute during halftime. We will go around with cans and get as many donations as we can in that one minute,” Ashley explained. “We design shirts, and we sell them to the students during school, so they can wear them in the student section (at the game). And, if there are any left over, we will sell them at the game. We will also have some youth sizes there.”

The main fundraiser of the student-run club is its Mini-THON. The dance marathon is modeled

after the Penn State THON, which raises money for families with children being treated for cancer at Penn State Children’s Hospital. This school year’s event is set for Friday, April 25, 2025, from 5 to 11 p.m. This will be TVHS’ 10th year participating in the event.

The TVHS club not only meets its goals, but also continually surpasses them. During commencement ceremonies for the Class of 2024, TVHS principal Bill Clements reported that the club raised more than $61,000 during the 2023-24 school year, which was an increase from $53,000 raised in the 2022-23 school year.

For more information about the club and its activities, visit www.facebook.com/twin .valley.313. Those with questions may email Chappelle at LChap pelle@tvsd.org.

festival, and the 50th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry (PVI).

“We will have an expanded encampment this year (featuring) more than 40 re-enactors,” said Mark Zerr, HCVHA executive director. “The PVI will also (re-enact) some of the homefront during the encampment, where women will be cooking.” The re-enactors will also have firing demonstrations on Saturday, Sept. 7, and Sept. 8.

Another popular aspect of the festival, according to Zerr, are the children’s activities. Children will be able to pick up a “chores list” at the festival gate, which will feature all the hands-on activities available at the event. Upon completion of a variety of tasks, children will be rewarded with a free wagon ride.

“A chore can be making a handdipped candle or getting answers to historical questions that they ask of the re-enactors,” Zerr explained. “They can also (complete a chore) in the Civil War area by taking part in being a soldier. (The chores can

be found) all over our 26 acres. They don’t have to complete everything, just a required amount.”

A variety of entertainment will take place on the main stage throughout the weekend, including Marian Gehman & Friends, who will perform a ventriloquist act on Sept. 6. “New this year is our Sunday act, the Evans Sisters,” Zerr noted. “Their show features the music of Patsy Cline, Loretta Lynn, Connie Francis, the Andrews Sisters, Lennon Sisters and many more. The public should really

enjoy them.”

Musical groups performing on Sept. 7 will be Just Practicing, which will play cover tunes from the ‘60s, ‘70s and ‘80s, and Elm Grove, an acoustic trio that will perform a mix of traditional Celtic songs, fiddle tunes, maritime music and classic folk music. One Heart One Voice, a gospel quartet, will perform on Sept. 8. The Hay Creek Valley Gold Band will also perform folk and bluegrass music throughout the festival.

welcomes people to take what they need and leave what they don’t. They can use the picnic tables, walk the trail and relax. We are trying to be very welcoming about it.”

Julie Funk, church council president and a board member of the Honey Brook Food Pantry, explained that the box will offer an additional way for people to obtain free food items when they don’t have access to local food pantries.

“It is part of (the church’s) effort to address the mounting issue of food insecurity in our local community,” said Funk. “In my role at the pantry, I can share that we have had a 45% increase in clients over the past two years and a 10% increase just since January of 2024. I have myself had to help address multiple weekend food emergencies for clients so am well aware of this need.”

The Little Free Pantry was built by Funk’s grandson Elias Chase as part of his Eagle Scout service project. Elias, a 2024 graduate of Avon Grove High School and a member of Avondale Troop 191, is currently attending the University of Pennsylvania.

“He did community service at the Honey Brook Food Pantry, and that was the impetus and opened his eyes into food insecurity,” said Funk, when explaining how the Scout chose his project. “Plus our pastor, Ron Dziuk, was an Eagle Scout, and he was a sponsor of the project.”

Others who assisted in the construction of the large food sharing box were Elias’ fellow troop members and their fathers, his parents and contractor Mark Hurm, who was Elias’ mentor during the project. Sean Hessler, assistant Scoutmaster of Troop 191, provided the Scouts with instruction about tool use and building techniques.

The pantry, which can be accessed from the church parking lot, is firmly cemented in the ground with a shingled roof and tempered glass to protect it from the elements. There are special door latches to keep the box securely closed.

“The pastor and church council decided on the location,” Funk noted. “Originally, it was going to be closer to the road, but we thought it might be safer (in the parking lot) for people stopping.” She added that a solar-powered light will illuminate the box in the evening.

After taking food items from the box, people may also enjoy the church’s walking trail and bring their children to the church playground. “We are targeting anyone in need, (especially) those who are low income. The box will be open 24/7,” said Funk. “There will be sign that

Funk, a registered dietitian, said the Little Free Pantry will always be stocked with quality food donated by the church congregation. She noted that there will also be a place where visitors can write down their needs, such as sugar-free items or gluten-free products.

“We wanted to give people a place they can safety go and pick up a few things they need and not have their kids go without breakfast or not have enough food for dinner,” Funk added. “That is so important to me and to all of us (at LGLC). I was happy Elias chose this project because he saw (the need himself) at the pantry. It was a good follow-through.”

A formal dedication of the box will take place in October.

LGLC is located at 3200 Horseshoe Pike (Route 322), Honey Brook. To learn more about the church and its activities, visit www .facebook.com/LGLCHoneyBrook or www.livinggodchurch.org. Those with questions may call the church office at 610-273-9383.
