Hay Creek Festival: A living history event

The Hay Creek Valley Historical Association (HCVHA) will present the 47th annual Hay Creek Festival on Friday through Sunday, Sept. 8 through 10, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at historic Joanna Furnace. The event will feature demonstrations of traditional crafts, children’s activities, festival foods, a display of antique vehicles and more.

The festival timeline will highlight the 18th- and 19th-century iron-making community from the beginning of the furnace’s operation in 1791 up to the 1950s. “The Hay Creek Festival is truly a one-of-a-kind living history adventure,” said Mark Zerr, HCVHA executive director.

Highlights of the festival will include open fire cooking and bake oven demonstrations, a contemporary craft market, living history presentations, a display of vintage Industrial Revolution-era working equipment, threshing demonstrations, a working sawmill, a display of steam engines and tractors, folk music presentations and Civil War and World War II encampments.

Visitors will also be able to tour the Joanna Furnace buildings. A 22-minute introductory video on the history of Joanna Furnace will take place each hour in the blowing engine house.

The Tri-County Heritage Library, which the HCVHA acquired in 2021, will have a special exhibit at the festival. “Each year, our library does a different exhibition at the mule stable,” said Zerr, noting that last year’s exhibit featured quilts. “This year, we will focus on the collection we received from the Florence (Flo) Williams estate, including one or two spinning wheels.”

According to Zerr, Williams was an educator and Civil War re-enactor. She also accumulated more than 40

Celebrate Honey Brook Harmony

What started as a day for neighbors to hold yard sales has evolved into Harmony Day, an annual celebration that involves organizations and businesses throughout the Honey Brook community.

This year’s event, themed “Celebrate Honey Brook Harmony,” will be presented by the Honey Brook Community Partnership (HBCP) on Saturday, Sept. 16, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The center of activities will be at the Honey Brook Fire Company, 679 Firehouse Lane, where there will be children’s activities, including carnival games, a rock wall and an obstacle course. Food for sale at the firehouse will include hoagies and hot dogs by the Honey Brook Women’s Club, jerky and popcorn by Cub Scout Pack 9 and coffee and cold drinks by the Honey Brook Youth Center. The September Farm pretzel and doughnut truck, as well as a milkshake truck, will also be on hand. Fire company members will have

During a candle-lighting ceremony held at St. Paul’s United Church of Christ (UCC), the following new officers were installed for 2023-24: president Suzanne Lander, vice president Phyllis Hoffman, co-recording secretary Kim Zeiber, corresponding secretary Joyce Zeiber and treasurer Jodie Zuber.

“Last year, we celebrated our

85th anniversary,” said Lander. “The candle-lighting ceremony dates back to when the club started, and we like to keep the tradition.” New members were also inducted at the event: Mary Beth Cinsici, Abigail Jones, Martha Millard, Anna Palmer and Kim Zeiber. Lander pointed out that the officers and members were asked to recite the club oath. “You (promise) to serve the club to the best of your ability and share your talents so we can improve our community,” she said.

Picking the right time to retire

Professionals work hard to achieve both short- and long-term goals. Retirement certainly qualifies as a long-term goal, and many people spend decades building and investing in a nest egg that they hope will help them enjoy their golden years to the fullest extent.

The decision regarding when to retire is affected by a host of variables, so a good time for one individual may

not be ideal for another. Professionals on the cusp of retirement can consider several factors as they try to pick the right time to retire.

Individuals should familiarize themselves with the rules of Social Security so they can maximize their benefits. Individuals can begin claiming Social Security benefits at age 62, although those benefits will be reduced by 25%. If individuals wait

until they are 66 or, in some cases, 67 to claim Social Security benefits, they will receive their full benefits. The Social Security Administration notes that those who can wait until age 70 to claim benefits will receive as much as 132% of the monthly benefit they would have received at full retirement age. These distinctions are especially important for people who will be looking to government-sponsored

programs to provide significant financial support in retirement. Individuals who won’t rely as heavily on such programs may be able to retire earlier.

Seniors should also consider their debts. Carrying debt into retirement can be risky, so it’s ideal to pay off all debts, including a mortgage and car payments, before retiring. Doing so can provide more financial flexibility and make it easier to manage unforeseen expenses, such as those incurred due to health problems.

Seniors must also consider their

retirement living expenses. It’s clear that a sizable nest egg is a necessity for anyone hoping to live comfortably in retirement, but the tricky part is figuring out just how big that nest egg must be. Individuals can speak with a financial adviser and discuss what their retirement living expenses will be. Conventional wisdom based on the Consumer Price Index suggests individuals will need to replace between 70% and 80% of their preretirement income after concluding their career. But even that figure is

not set in stone, as rising inflation, such as the rapid spike experienced in 2022, can quickly put retirees in financial jeopardy. By estimating the expenses they might have in retirement, individuals can begin to see how close to or far away from retirement they may be. They should budget for inflation so any spike in living expenses can be easier to manage.

Many individuals recognize that there’s no perfect time to retire, but a few simple strategies can help people make the best decision possible.

Strength training for seniors

A balanced diet and exercise, which includes a combination of aerobic activities and strength training, is necessary to maintain long-term health.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, regular physical activity is one of the most important things older adults can do to protect their overall health. Exercise helps to delay or prevent many of the conditions that come with age.

Adults age 65 and older should aim for the recommended 150 minutes a

week of moderate-intensity activity, such as brisk walking, and at least two days of activities that strengthen muscles. When it comes to muscle strengthening, seniors can follow a few safety guidelines.

- Speak with a health care provider first. Before beginning an exercise regimen, people should have a discussion with their general practitioner about their fitness goals. The doctor can recommend strategies that are safe and point out any exercises that may compro-

mise the patient’s overall health.

- Master basic exercises first. Anyone new to strength training, which is sometimes known as resistance training, can start out slowly, even just using body weight to provide resistance. Resistance exercises can include squats, crunches, modified pushups, planks, and lunges.

- Advance to resistance bands. When a person is ready to move on to something else, he or she may consider resistance bands as an alternative to free weights. The bands can help a person develop good form before introducing weight. Good form is key to avoiding injury.

- Work with a trainer. Working with a certified personal trainer can help a person learn how to use free weights and strength-training machines correctly. A trainer also can create a routine that includes the right number of sets and repetitions to gradually build and maintain muscle mass. If someone decides against hiring a trainer, gym staff members may guide them on using equipment and demonstrate proper form.

- Exercise with a friend. Strength training with a friend or family member can provide motivation and keep people on target to meet their goals.

- Build up gradually. A person’s first strength training session should only last 10 to 15 minutes, according to Tiffany Chag, a strength coach at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York. This time limit enables the person to gauge soreness. Anyone new to strength training should wait until soreness abates before beginning the next session.

Exercises that build strength are a vital part of maintaining health as a senior. These exercises help maintain muscle mass and also improve balance and bone health.

Proceeds from the fundraisers benefit local organizations, as well as fund scholarships to graduating seniors at Daniel Boone High School. New members are always welcome, and membership is not limited to residents of Birdsboro.

“(Women can) come to a meeting and see if it is something they like,” Lander said, noting that members pay nominal annual dues. “The only requirement for membership is that you help out at our big events.”

She said in addition to meetings, the club has a social aspect. Club members enjoy a Christmas dinner together as well as a spring dinner. “I met a lot of friends through the club. (They are) people I would not have met otherwise,” Lander shared.

which is celebrating its bicentennial this year. The church will also offer yard sales, free snacks, a kids’ art show, a performance by guitarist Paul Columbo and face painting.

“The church will have pamphlets available (about the church’s history),” said HBCP member Dawn Schaffer, a member of the Harmony Day organizing committee.

Other events on Harmony Day will include a book sale by the Friends of the Honey Brook Community Library, which will take place at the library, 687 Compass Road, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Shoppers will be able to purchase a bag of books for a fee. The library will also host yard sales from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., and a food truck will be on-site.

Honey Brook businesses will also have special Harmony Day sales.

A highlight of the day will be a Blankets of Honor presentation to a local veteran at 12:45 p.m. at the Long Way Home, 4690 Horseshoe Pike, followed by a performance by the Celtic band Down by the Glenside from 1 to 2 p.m. Visitors will be able to meet adoptable pets at the location beginning at 1 p.m.

According to Schaffer, the HBCP organizing committee has been meeting since March to plan the event at the Lanchester Landfill and Reclamation Center, Harmony Day’s title sponsor. She said that while most neighbors hold yard sales on Harmony Day in the morning, that is just the beginning of the day.

“The yard sales start early, and they are usually over by 10 a.m.; that’s when all events kick off at the fire hall that people can enjoy,” said Schaffer.

Moving Communities to Christ (MCC) Church will hold its fifth annual RISE Carnival and Car Show from Wednesday, Sept. 6, through Saturday, Sept. 9, from 5 to 10 p.m. at MCC’s main campus in Elverson.

The family-friendly event will feature carnival rides, games and food. Admission and parking are free. Fireworks will be held at the carnival at dusk on Sept. 9. The festival’s car show will take place on Sept. 9 from 4 to 7 p.m., and it will feature live music along with a display of classic, modern and antique cars. Trophy categories for the car show will include Best Classic, Best Modern, Best Antique, Best In Show and People’s Choice. Registration for the car show is free, but donations will be accepted. Preregistration is not required.

“Last year, we had about 40 cars,” said Jenn Pallante, a member of the MCC Church events team. “We have volunteers from our church that judge. We also give out tickets, and for a donation, people can vote for the People’s Choice trophy.”

The amusement rides, including a Ferris wheel and merry-goround, will be set up on the church grounds. The amusement company will begin setup on Tuesday, Sept. 5. “You can (purchase) a wristband, which covers all the rides, or buy (individual) tickets,” said Pallante, adding that tickets will be discounted on Sept. 6.

Food will be available for purchase throughout the event. “We do the burgers and hot dogs and

grilled cheese,” said Pallante, noting that the carnival company will sell other foods such as cotton candy, candy apples, funnel cake and corn dogs.

There will also be an opportunity to win gift baskets. The winners will be announced on Sept. 9; they need not be present to win.

A children’s scavenger hunt will be held inside the building, and the church will provide information about its services and other activities that it offers.

“The carnival is not a fundraiser for the church. It’s more of an outreach for the community,” Pallante noted. “If there is a profit, it goes to next year’s carnival. I love that we do it; it’s great and it’s fun for the church to get involved in the community.”

Event organizers said that the name of the event is part of the church’s mission to have Christians “rise up” to serve people in the tricounty area who may be looking for a church to attend.

Events team member Lynnette Hess noted that the event provides an opportunity for people who do not attend church to get to know the congregants.

“We come to church in jeans and do fun things,” said Hess. “One of our core values is ‘God’s not boring and neither are we.’ But we also understand that MCC is not the right fit for everyone, and we’re ready to get people connected to a church that is right for them.”

MCC is located at 4221 Main St. (Route 23), Elverson. For more information about the carnival, visit www.movingcommunities tochrist.org and choose “2023 RISE Carnival & Car Show” on the home page.
