Hay Creek Festival To Highlight Early Iron-Making Community

Featured at this year’s Hay Creek Festival will be Civil War re-enactors (left photo), a craft sale (center photo) and a display of antique cars (right photo). BY FRANCINE FULTON

he 45th annual Hay Creek Festival at Joanna Furnace, which allows visitors to experience what life would have been like in a 19th-century iron-making community, will be presented by the Hay Creek Valley Historical Association (HCVHA) from Friday through Sunday, Sept. 10 to 12. The festival will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day and will feature early

American crafts, living history presentations, children’s hands-on activities, homemade foods, a display of antique cars and tractors and more. Because of the pandemic, a mini-Fall Festival was held in 2020 and this year’s event will be modified as well. “We are offering a scaled-back rendition of the festival,” explained Mark Zerr, HCVHA executive director. “We understand there is a worldwide

pandemic going on and there are people who are still very concerned with the virus. Because of that, we do not have quite as many vendors and exhibits, and unfortunately, we were unable to invite community groups to participate like we did in the past.” Masks will be optional during the festival, but visitors should maintain social distancing. This year’s event will feature three new attractions.

For the first time, visitors will be able to see HCVHA’s latest restoration project - the Joanna Furnace Wheelwright Shop. The restoration project began in 2019 and was completed this spring. Throughout the weekend, committee members from HCVHA’s newly acquired Tri-County Heritage Library will exhibit various artifacts and displays in the Mule Stable, including photos of Col. Jacob Morgan’s home and items from Grace Mines.

In addition to the Civil War encampment, there will be a new World War II encampment this year. The early American crafts area will include domestic and village industry demonstrations of skills such as open fire cooking and food preservation. There will also be bake oven demonstrations, and samples of early American foods made in the oven will be available. This year’s Creekside Crafts Market will offer items such as redware

Car Show from pg 1 The rain date is Saturday, Sept. 18. On display will be all types of vehicles, including cars, trucks, motorcycles, antiques, classics, rat rods, street rods and muscle cars. “About threequarters of the lot will be cleaned out

for us,” noted Joe O’Fria, club president. “We will also have a live band this year - Lisa Chavous and the Philadelphia Blues Messengers.” Epicurean Garage will offer food for sale. Owners interested in displaying

their vehicles will be asked to pay a registration fee and to donate three or more nonperishable food items for the food bank. Registrants will be entered into a drawing to win a cash prize. “We will also have close to 100 door prizes to give away to participants,” O’Fria said. Prizes will include gift certificates to local stores and eateries, as well as car-related items. Spectators are invited to attend the car show for free, but they are

asked to donate nonperishable food items for the CCFB. A truck from the food bank will be on hand to accept the donated food. Monetary donations will also be accepted. A total of 35 trophies will be awarded. The awards ceremony will take place at 2:30 p.m. A panel of judges will present first-, second- and third-place trophies, and there will be a People’s Choice Award as well. There will also

be some unique car show awards such as Whoever Traveled the Farthest, Oldest Car - Female Owned and Oldest Car - Youngest Driver. The trophies are custom made by club members out of old car parts that are cleaned, welded together, powder-coated and then painted. Club members are currently meeting regularly at trophy-making workshops in preparation for the show. Club members, who pay a yearly

membership fee, meet on the first Wednesday of the month at 7:30 p.m. at the Epicurean Garage, 570 Simpson Drive, Chester Springs. Guests are welcome. Having a specialized vehicle is not a requirement, as the club is open to owners of all types of vehicles. Lexus of Chester Springs is located on Route 100, just north of the Pennsylvania Turnpike entrance. For more information about the car show or to See Car Show pg 8

Harmony Day from pg 1 One of the highlights of the day will be a yard sale and book sale from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Honey Brook Community Library, 687 Compass Road. The book sale, being presented by the Friends of the Library, will offer books by the bag for a suggested donation. Yard sale vendors may register by visiting the library or calling 610-273-3303. Vendors are asked to bring their own tables. The Family Health and Safety Fair will take place from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Honey Brook Fire Company, 679 Firehouse Lane. Featured will be informational booths set up by health and safety service providers, health assessments like blood pressure screenings and activities for children and adults. Those who complete a health and wellness passport will be entered into a prize drawing. Among those scheduled to participate are the Chester County Department of Health, which will offer free flu shots; Chester County Food Bank’s Fresh2You Mobile Market, which will offer free smoothies; the Comcast van; and The Camel Project anti-bullying van. Entertainment will run from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Included will be karate demonstrations by Brandywine Martial Arts Academy, line dancing by Beth DeFeo from Living God Lutheran Church in Honey Brook and hands-on CPR demonstrations by Elverson/Honey Brook EMS. Barbecue chicken will be available at the firehouse, and free car seat checkups will be offered from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. by Safe Kids Chester County. Honey Brook businesses, including Honey Brook Hardware, 5004 Horseshoe Pike, and The Board Used Furniture Shoppe, 4530 Horseshoe Pike, will have special Harmony Day sales. A shredding event will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the State Farm Insurance building, 161 Pequea Ave., Honey Brook. The Howell Masonic Lodge, 1505 Walnut Road, Honey Brook, will offer free parking and restroom facilities. As is the tradition, local residents will hold yard sales throughout the day. “Almost every house and porch (will) have a yard sale,” said Ross. “We envision people walking around town and the (Family Health and Safety Fair) being the hub of activity. It (will be) great to see the community come out and be outside.” Earlier this year, the HBCP began discussing if Harmony Day would go on as usual. “Because it is outdoor event, we felt pretty comfortable (holding it),” Ross said. “This is the partnership’s biggest event. It’s a huge effort, but it has been successful in the past and it will be great again this year.” For more information about Harmony Day, visit www.hb partnership.org or www.facebook .com/hbpartnership.org.

Coming off the COVID-19 restrictions that marked the last several months, staff at Life Awakening made the decision that the organization’s 13th annual fundraiser should be on the lighter side. With that goal in mind, they gave the event the theme “It’s Time to Laugh Again” and engaged Christian comedian Gordon Douglas to entertain following a fruit and dessert bar that will include gluten- free options. Life Awakening will hold the fundraiser on Thursday, Sept. 23, at Springside Barn, 1294 Weaverland Road, East Earl, beginning at 6:30 p.m. Douglas is a pastor and speaker, as well as a comedian, known for weaving life lessons into his programs and

sharing what he has learned through tragic deaths, his wife’s recovery from cancer, his dad’s many years in a wheelchair, and other experiences. Douglas has previously performed in the New Holland area and at Life Awakening events. “We have had him two other times, and people really loved him, so we decided to bring him back,” said Life Awakening executive director Linda Ingham. In addition to the wit of Douglas the event will feature, Ingham talking about the Life Awakening Academy (LA Academy), a new training program that will premiere in January 2022 in order to teach people to use the Gospel Process. “God started downloading the Gospel Process to me (in 2007),” recalled Ingham. “The
