Birdsboro library welcomes new director

“One of my favorite aspects of working in a library is getting to know the patrons, even on firstname basis,” said Rachel Stewart, who was recently named the new director of the Boone Area Library, noting that she also has a goal of learning what individual patrons liked to read. “Getting to connect with the kids is (also) really special - getting to see the joy on their faces when you add new items or programs. The ability to see everybody is on a daily basis and get to the know the patrons is really important to me.”

Stewart grew up in Berks County and recently returned to the area with her husband and daughter to be closer to family. “Exeter is where we call home. I lived (in Berks County) through college, and I moved to Illinois in 2017 and that’s where I have been since moving back a couple of weeks ago,” she shared. “We knew we wanted to move back, and I had been applying for different jobs around here and this is where I landed.”

Stewart, who has spent the last 10 years working in libraries in Illinois, earned a bachelor’s degree in library science from Kutztown University and earned her master’s degree in library and information science from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.

She recalled visiting the Boone Area Library as a teenager when she was in search of specific books on her reading list. “I was and still am such an avid reader,” she said. “I would get so impatient (waiting for books) during the summer and if I knew my books were available at other libraries,

I would go to that library rather than wait to have them sent to the Exeter Library to be picked up.”

She interviewed for the Birdsboro library position via Zoom in July and walked into the library for the first time in years on Aug. 19, her first day on the job. “Coming in for the first time, I thought the building was a lot larger than I remembered as a teenager. That may have been because I have not been in every nook and cranny of the library,” she noted. “I don’t think I knew the community room existed.”

“I immediately recognized that there was new carpet and they painted. They definitely have made some improvements,” she added.

her return, she has seen several old friends from the area. “I already have seen two people that were friends from high school and some acquaintances (have) come through and said, ‘I didn’t realize you were back.’ It’s great to see some familiar faces,” said Stewart.

One of her first challenges as the new library director is to oversee the installation of a new HVAC system, which provides the library building with heating and air conditioning. “We have some challenges ahead of us, but hopefully we can work through the most pressing issues and work towards some fundraising goals to help make some major building improvements over the

Community invited to Poole Forge Day

“Preserving Our HeritageCelebrating Our Children and Community” is the theme of this year’s Poole Forge Day, set for Saturday, Sept. 14, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Historic Poole Forge, 1940 Main St., Narvon (Churchtown).

Activities will include children’s crafts, live music, a volleyball tournament, historical craft demonstrations, a pony cart and pet parade and a display of military vehicles, antique brass cars and Gruber wagons. Admission and parking are free.

New this year will be a craft area where children will be able

Neighbors meetings to focus on fellowship

“We really want to focus on fellowship this year. We have 12 or 13 speakers, but a lot of our programs will be digging deeper into the community and getting to know each other better,” said Madison Petersheim, a member of the planning team for Neighbors, a Christian women’s fellowship group that meets at Conestoga Mennonite Church, 2779 Main St., Morgantown. Meetings, which began on Sept. 10 with a welcome back

brunch, will continue every Tuesday through May 13, 2025, with the exception of a holiday break on Dec. 24 and Jan. 31. Petersheim, who is on the planning team along with Rachel Mast and Rebecca Beam, announced that the group is gathering at the church weekly after meeting every other week last year. The meeting time has also been changed to a later time of 9:30 to 11 a.m. to accommodate women who drop off their children at school. Each Neighbors meeting

includes refreshments, prayer time and a program; child care is provided. “Every meeting will start with coffee and prayer, and this year we will have speakers, activities and other things planned,” Petersheim said. “All child care is free. We have paid child care workers that come in every week.”

When a craft is the focus of the meeting, registration is required, and a nominal fee is charged to cover the cost of supplies.

New activities this year will be a Game Morning on Nov. 26 when attendees will be invited to bring a card or board game. There will also be new speakers, including Conestoga Mennonite Church pastor Jeremiah Martin. “On Sept. 17, we are having the pastor of the church come in. He is new to the group,” noted Petersheim. “Bob and Cindy Petersheim will do a Q and A on marriage on Feb. 4, 2025. Everyone knows them, but they have never come in before.”

The group also takes part in community service projects. On Jan. 21, 2025, the ladies will knot comforters for the Mennonite Central Committee. The blankets will be distributed worldwide to people in need. On March 25, 2025, members will take part in a service day with Anchored Ministries, an Elverson-based charity.

The popular “My Favorite Things” meeting will be on March 18, 2025, and attendees may bring three different things valued under $5 each to share with the other members. Past items that members shared were baked goods, books and plants.

Women who attend the meetings come from the Morgantown, Honey Brook and Elverson areas, while others travel from towns in Lancaster County, including New Holland and Ephrata.

“It ranges from 15 to 20 (attendees). Our biggest morning is 25,” Petersheim said. “We would like to see (additional members). This year, it’s all about fellowship.”

to make twig art using items from nature. “We are making the pavilion a craft area for kids, and we are moving the programs up to the main tent,” explained Dawn Ekdahl, Poole Forge executive director, noting that programs will include a wildlife show by Raven Ridge Wildlife Center. “There will also be live blacksmithing, a wood turner, (a display) of long arm rifles and a fishing demonstration by the Chesapeake Bay Foundation.”

Another new attraction this year will be a hot air balloon walk-about. “You inflate the balloon halfway, and the balloon is inflated (enough) so you can walk into it,” Ekdahl explained, adding, “(Instead of puppet shows) the Penn’s Woods Puppet Theater will present Polly Puppet, a lifesize puppet. New this year we will have a magician, and he will do two shows in the afternoon. Pony rides will also return.”

A highlight of the day will be a turtle race at 3:30 p.m. Visitors who “purchase” green rubber turtles that will float down Conestoga Creek will be in the running for monetary prizes. The

first turtle across the finish line will get the grand prize. There will also be smaller prizes for the other top finishers.

An Amish youth volleyball tournament will take place in the ballfield and meadow across the creek.

Other activities will include hayrides around the Poole Forge property; a silent auction, with goods and gift certificates donated by local businesses; arts and crafts vendors; a beekeeper display; and demonstrations by the Lancaster Spinners and Weavers Guild.

The 18th-century Welsh ironmaster’s mansion will be open for self-guided tours, and live music will be offered on the mansion porch.

Offering food and beverages will be the Father and Son Barbecue, the Waffle Wagon, Nena’s Kitchen and Beiler’s HandRolled Pretzels. Poole Forge will offer soft-serve ice cream and smoothies.

DJ Jay Mattson will provide the music.

The event will end with an airplane candy drop, weather permitting.

Historic Poole Forge is located on Route 23, 7 miles east of New Holland and 3 miles east of the Shady Maple Complex. For more information and a detailed schedule of Poole Forge Day events, visit www.historicpooleforge.org or www.facebook.com/pooleforge. Those with questions may email Ekdahl at hpf1940@gmail.com.

New this year will be a hot air balloon walk-about.
