Twin Valley to present Showcase of Bands

The Music Boosters of Twin Valley will present the second annual Showcase of Bands at Twin Valley High School (TVHS) on Saturday, Sept. 16, from 7 to 10 p.m. In addition to the host band, other local high schools that will participate are Exeter, Fleetwood, Owen J. Roberts, Daniel Boone, Reading and Muhlenberg. Each band will perform its 2023 field show, culminating in a mass band performance to end the night of entertainment.

The showcase is not a competition. Rather, judges will provide feedback to the performers. “It is an exhibition,” explained Cheryl Skoniczin, president of the Music Boosters of Twin Valley. “At the beginning of the season, we have the schools come and do their shows. We will have judges, but no prizes will be awarded. The judges will tell the kids what they need to fix when they do go to competition later on (in the season). The judges will (record their thoughts) and write up their notes and give them back to us.”

She noted that each judge specializes in a different area of the performance,

such as percussion, visual effects, music and the color guard. One judge will evaluate the general ensemble.

A highlight of the event will be when the bands perform together under the direction of TVHS band director Robert Bennett. More than 550 students will participate. “They will all have the music in advance and rehearse with their own directors, but they don’t rehearse as a giant ensemble,” Skoniczin noted. “They come on the field in their sections - all

Poole Forge Day to offer family fun

“It’s a popular community event,” said Poole Forge executive director Dawn Ekdahl when describing the annual celebration of Poole Forge Day. “One of my favorite parts is that local community members and neighbors come out. It’s a big social get-together.”

This year’s Poole Forge Day, featuring children’s activities, food, crafts, live music, goat races, a volleyball tournament and more, will take place at Historic Poole Forge on Saturday, Sept. 16, from 9 a.m.

to 5 p.m. Admission and parking are free.

The event will begin at the picnic pavilion, where there will be a presentation by the Raven Ridge Wildlife Center. Also in the pavilion, children will be able to create twig art using items from nature.

“There will be a reptile display and beekeeper display in the pavilion in addition to the arts and crafts,” Ekdahl noted.

The popular goat races, where goat owners guide their goats through a specified course, will take place beginning at 2:30 p.m. “The

the flutes and all the clarinets will be together. Everyone is with their like instruments.”

“The drum majors from each of the participating schools will be up directing their groups as well,” she added. “It’s to keep a beat, so the kids don’t get off-rhythm.”

The theme of the TVHS band show this year is “It’s About Time.” Songs include “As Time Goes By” as featured in “Casablanca,” “Clocks” by Coldplay and “Time in a Bottle” by Jim Croce.

“The show is performed at all Twin Valley football games, both home and away, as well as local competitions throughout the fall,” noted Skoniczin.

Last year, the TVHS marching band competed for the first time at the Cavalcade of Bands in Hershey, where the band won the silver medal in its division.

The upcoming Showcase of Bands is a fundraiser for the booster club, which supports all Twin Valley School District music students and

programs. Concessions and food trucks will be available at the event. TVHS is located at 4897 N. Twin Valley Road, Elverson. Tickets will be sold at the gate. A discount will be provided for those who pay with cash. There will be separate prices for adults and for students and senior citizens. Handicapped-accessible parking and entry will be available by the TVHS Physical Education Center. For more information, contact Bennett at rbennett@tvsd.org.

The center of activities will be at the Honey Brook Fire Company, 679 Firehouse Lane, where there will be children’s activities, including

It’s a daylong tournament,” Ekdahl said. “(Players) are coming from over all Pennsylvania, from a number of different counties. It’s become a popular location for a tournament.”

The Penn’s Woods Puppet Theater will present three shows of “Rumpelstiltskin” throughout the course of the day, and there will be barrel train rides for children. Other activities will include hayrides around the Poole Forge property; a

Fire company members will have an open house and gifts for children, and CPR instruction and demonstrations will be offered by Elverson-Honey Brook Area EMS. Brandywine Martial Arts Academy will hold a martial arts demonstration at 11 a.m. on the grounds near the fire company pavilion.

Members of the Twin Valley High School Mini-THON will have a car wash at the Honey Brook American Legion Post 422, 4820 Horseshoe Pike, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. A pickleball round robin tournament will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the James A. Umble Memorial Park in Honey Brook Township, located at 173 Supplee Road.

New this year will be a historical display at the Honey Brook Presbyterian Church, 4331 Horseshoe Pike, which is celebrating its bicentennial this year. The church will also offer yard sales, free snacks, a kids’ art show, a performance by guitarist Paul Columbo and face painting.

“The church will have pamphlets available (about the church’s history),” said HBCP member Dawn Schaffer, a member of the Harmony Day organizing committee.

Other events on Harmony Day will include a book sale by the Friends of the Honey Brook Community Library, which will take place at the library, 687 Compass Road, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Shoppers will be able to purchase a bag of books for a fee. The library will also host yard sales from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., and a food truck will be on-site.

Honey Brook businesses will also have special Harmony Day sales.

A highlight of the day will be a Blankets of Honor presentation to a local veteran at 12:45 p.m. at the Long Way Home, 4690 Horseshoe Pike, followed by a performance by the Celtic band Down by the Glenside from 1 to 2 p.m. Visitors will be able to meet adoptable pets at the location beginning at 1 p.m.

According to Schaffer, the HBCP

organizing committee has been meeting since March to plan the event at the Lanchester Landfill and Reclamation Center, Harmony Day’s title sponsor. She said that while most neighbors hold yard sales on Harmony Day in the morning, that is just the beginning of the day. “The yard sales start early, and they are usually over by 10 a.m.; that’s when all events kick off at the fire hall that people can enjoy,” said Schaffer. TVBA to host speaker

Twin Valley Bible Academy (TVBA), 105 Shirktown Road, Narvon, is hosting its third speaker as part of its series, “America, Where Do We Go From Here?” The series is designed to inform and inspire citizens about their national history, making sense of the current political environment and hearing about crucial ways to live out the American way.

The event is scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 14, at 7 p.m. Attendees will hear from Janice Martino-Gottshall, senior council at Pennsylvania Family’s Independence Law Center, who will speak about how the Constitution can, and is, being rightfully used to restore and

protect Constitutional liberties.

TVBA implements the Classic Christian Principle Approach, utilizing the educational model of America’s founding fathers who, combined with Christian character and scholarship in education, produced the form of government and documents necessary for a free people.
