4-H Auction from pg 1 co-chairing the auction with Payton Barber. “In the live auction we will have mushrooms, wheat straw, mums, pumpkins, (gift certificates for) riding lessons and fox hunting and much more. Someone also donated a triangular shawl loom for the live auction and a spinning wheel with wool to get started.” She noted that 4-H club members donate items they have gathered or made for gift baskets. For example, there will be an equine basket with horse grooming items. Pippin noted that 4-H youths will provide assistance at the auction, serving as runners and helping display items for auctioneer Bill McCauley. Food will also be available for purchase throughout the event, and offerings will include a dairy cart selling milkshakes and ice cream. “We will also have chicken sandwiches and pulled pork sandwiches

and mac and cheese,” Pippin said, noting that a diner in southern Chester County will prepare the food. There will also be a cash-and-carry table where people can purchase donated items directly to take home. “We started this last year for random items that did not fit into the live or silent auction,” Pippin explained. “Last year we had a lot of antique items and some books.” She noted that only cash will be accepted for food sales and for the cash-and-carry table. Bidders will be able to purchase auction items with cash or credit cards. Organizers are seeking donations for the auction. “We are asking for donations of any kind,” said Pippin. “Past donations have included services, handmade items, antiques, gift certificates, farm products, collectibles, artwork, used and new equipment and tools.” Donations may be dropped off at the Romano Center on Wednesday, Sept. 19, through Friday, Sept. 21, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. and on Sept. 22 from 9 a.m. to noon. Proceeds from the auction will be

used to help support the cost of upkeep and maintaining the 4-H Center, which gives 4-H clubs a place to meet for free. “We have about five clubs a week that meet there. We also have the 4-H Fair there,” said Pippin. According to Pippin, the 4-H auction used to be held at the former Tabas Hotel in Downingtown. When a pole barn was built in 1996 at the Romano Center site, the auction was relocated. Now, it is held in the center’s new addition, which was built in 2010. “I was in the original group of 4-Hers who did fundraising for the new 4-H building,” Pippin recalled. The center’s new addition contains restroom facilities and meeting rooms, as well as a large exhibition and activity area. For more information about the 4-H auction, readers may call the Chester County Extension Office at 610-696-3500. More information is also available by visiting www.facebook.com/TheRomano 4HCenterofChesterCounty or www.face book.com/chestercounty4H.

On duty at the recent Citadel Country Spirit USA concert in Ludwig’s Corner, Chester County Deputy Sheriff Matthew “Jamie” Mendenhall was giving Nero, his K-9 partner, some exercise when a man initiated a conversation about the importance of K-9s. The man subsequently introduced himself as Doug Paisley, the father of country superstar Brad Paisley, who was to perform at the concert on Aug. 26. As the two continued their discussion, Mendenhall noted that two area K-9 handlers had lost their lives in the line of duty in recent years: Plymouth Township Police Officer Bradley Fox and Berks County Deputy Sheriff Kyle Pagerly. Mendenhall, who came to Chester County from the Berks County Sheriff ’s Office, had supervised Kyle in the K-9 Unit there. Doug asked if Mendenhall

the class takes a summer break from June through August and resumes in September. During the summer months, the women meet for picnics on the church grounds. No child care is provided during the sessions. Women are asked to purchase the “Pursuing Contentment” book. SWM recently announced that the Celtic Martins will be the featured entertainment at its fall fundraiser on Friday, Oct. 5, at Conestoga Mennonite Church. Doors will open at 6 p.m., and the concert will begin at 7 p.m. A dessert reception and a meetand-greet with the Martins will follow the concert. There is no admission fee, but a freewill offering will be received. The Celtic Martins, a family band from Newmanstown, will perform traditional Celtic music, as well as step dancing. The group consists of six siblings who play various instruments, including the fiddle, Irish whistles, bagpipes, guitar, accordion, cello and percussion. They are joined on guitar, bass and drums by their parents and the husband of one

of the siblings. The Celtic Martins have been performing Irish tunes and Irish step dance routines since 2004 at various festivals, theaters and other venues. This will be the second time that the group has been featured at SWM’s fall fundraiser. “We are duplicating everything that we did last October because it was so successful,” Waters remarked. “It is a very lively, family-friendly show with excellent Celtic music and clogging.” The evening will also include a sale of homemade Amish pretzels and a silent auction featuring products and services donated by local individuals and businesses. The silent auction items will be available for viewing at 6 p.m. SWM, which was founed by Waters and her husband, Sam, began offering counseling services at Conestoga Mennonite Church in July of 2012. Help is offered to those dealing with anger, depression, fear and anxieties, addictions, self-esteem issues and broken relationships. The ministry also offers an array of services for victims of domestic violence. Thanks to donations from the church and community, as well as fundraising, services are provided free of charge to individuals who are uninsured or underinsured For more information about the class or the fundraiser, readers may contact SWM at 610286-9555 or Conestoga Mennonite Church at 610-286-9124. The topic of the book study will be “Pursuing Contentment,” which is part of the Women of Faith Study Guide Series. The book explores what the Bible says about true contentment and how it is a skill that can be learned. “Our discussion will emphasize the importance of being content in every life experience that comes our way,” said Waters. She emphasized that the class is open to all women from various backgrounds and faiths. “We discuss emotions, relationships, struggles and how to take care of and value ourselves,” noted Waters. “This class provides practical application for a woman’s daily life. We (learn that we should be) loved and valued.” This is Waters’ sixth year of offering the book discussion group for women. She noted that

Paul Bryant Jr., who was also on duty at the music festival. She had not seen Bryant since the day her late husband graduated from the Philadelphia Police K-9 Academy, where the sergeant had previously worked. At the end of the event, Mendenhall was unable to leave the concert grounds because his vehicle was blocked by a school bus bearing the number 27, which was Kyle’s badge number. Mendenhall shared that Kyle and his wife, Alecia, were both huge fans of Brad. In fact, Kyle’s special song for his wife was Brad’s “She’s Everything.” Mendenhall then contacted Alecia to let her know that “Brad Paisley’s dad says hello” and to see if she wanted to come to the concert. Alecia arrived 15 minutes before Brad Paisley took the stage; it was the first time she had seen him live. He sang “When I Get Where I’m Going” in front of a giant projection showing Kyle and Fox and their respective K-9 partners, Jynx and Nick. The country icon also performed Kyle Pagerly’s anthem

Car Show from pg 1 be six cash drawings - three for preregistered vehicles and three for day-of-show registrants. Vehicle owners are also eligible to win Sponsor Choice Awards. “There are several of those, noted Lander. “Different businesses in the community will sponsor an award, and they will select a car and present (the award) to the owner. The Keystone Blood Mobile will also be present from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. For more information and to schedule a blood donation appointment, readers may visit http://donor.giveapint.org. As part of an effort to make the car show family-friendly, other highlights of the day will include a Chinese auction, door prizes, a drawing and music by a disc jockey. “Everyone is invited to look at all the cars and take part in all the fun, said Lander. People of all ages may participate in a cake walk that will be held between 1:30 and 2 p.m. Prizes will be whole cakes made by club members. “It’s like musical

chairs, Lander explained. “If you stop on the right number when the music stops, you get to choose a cake. Home-based business vendors selling items such as jewelry and designer clothing will be on hand, and there will be table displays set up by Boy Scouts and other nonprofits and local businesses. Food will be available for purchase throughout the day. “In the morning, we will make breakfast sandwiches - eggs, ham and cheese and egg and cheese - and (offer) coffee, said Lander. “At lunchtime, we will make burgers and hot dogs and chicken salad wraps. Beverages, including soft drinks and water, will also be available. The Woman’s Club of Birdsboro, established in 1937, is a community service organization. The club hosts various fundraisers throughout the year, including the car show and a bingo in March. Proceeds from the events are used to award four scholarships to graduating seniors at Daniel Boone High School.

Other beneficiaries have included the Boone Area Library, the Birdsboro-Union Fire Department, the Birdsboro Police Department, Southern Berks Ambulance, Mission Trip Birdsboro and the Birdsboro Community Memorial Center. The club also supports the food banks at New First Baptist Church of Birdsboro and Hopewell Love Inc. “We try to support as much as we can in the community, Lander said. “The car show is our biggest fundraiser, and the second biggest is bingo. The club meets on the fourth Tuesday of the month at 7 p.m. at St. Paul’s United Church of Christ, 300 W. First St., Birdsboro. Each meeting features a guest speaker, followed by a business meeting to discuss upcoming projects. New members of all ages are welcome. It is not necessary to live in Birdsboro to join the group. For more information about the club, readers may search for “Woman’s Club of Birdsboro on Facebook.

Women’s Group from pg 1 Neighbors Caring and Sharing will begin its 32nd year on Tuesday, Sept. 18, from 9:15 to 11 a.m. The theme of the meeting will be “Caramels - Oh So Sweet, and it will feature homemade baked goods and a presentation titled “Sweet Talk by guest speaker Cindy Petersheim. “We’re going to bake a couple of desserts and snacks with caramel, Essick explained, noting that the dishes will include caramel apple bundt cake and German chocolate cake with caramel, which will be served with ice cream. Meetings will continue each Tuesday from 9:15 to 11 a.m. through April 16, 2019, with a break during the Christmas holiday. There will also be two outings scheduled by the group in May and June of next year. Each meeting begins with refreshments and a prayer time, followed by a guest speaker. “We are going to try a different format this year, Essick noted. “In the beginning of the morning there will be more social time - a time allotted for fellowship, so the ladies get to know each other and enrich their friendships. Child care is provided for infants through kindergarten-age children. While their moms are at the meeting, children enjoy stories, crafts and age-appropriate activities under the supervision of a teacher. Snacks are provided. All programs and child care are offered free of charge, but donations are welcome. When a craft is the focus of the meeting, registration is required, and a small fee is charged to cover the cost of supplies. Essick said that the calendar of events this year features a host of new guest speakers. “On Oct. 9, there will be a program by North Star Initiative that will be about women who are trying to get out of human trafficking and get back to normal society, she said. On Nov. 6, Jeff Leath from Global Aid Network (GAiN) in Lancaster County will be the presenter. Attendees will be asked to bring in bars of soap that will be used by the organization to create care packages. In lieu of a meeting on Dec. 4, Carrie Warner will perform a Christmas concert in the church sanctuary. A new program, “My Favorite Things, will be presented on Jan. 15, 2019. “You bring three favorite things (valued) under $5 each to share with the group, Essick explained, noting that the items will be

14, 2019, the group will carpool to the Welkinweir estate in Pottstown. The final outing will be on June 18, 2019, when the ladies will meet for lunch at Historic Poole Forge in Narvon. And we will sing the song from ‘The Sound of Music.’ The Neighbors’ planning committee includes Sue Sutter, Norma Denlinger and Beth Random. “Beth will also be a speaker for us again on Nov. 13, Essick noted. The title of Random’s talk will be “The Gift of Gratitude - Colossians 2:6-7. Two final outings are planned after the regular meetings have concluded. On May

“Cavod is a perfect place for (this) program because of the loving and accepting atmosphere here,” said Dienner. “No one will be treated differently. It’s about who you are as a person and not what you can or cannot do.” Twenty-two-year-old Lydia Leibee of New Holland has taken private dance lessons at Cavod for some time, but this fall as a member of the Intro to Dance program, she will take a class at Cavod for the first time. Lydia, who has taken worship dance with lyrical dance mixed in, shared that she loved taking lessons at the academy. “My teacher is awesome,” said

Julie Haney, dance teacher with Cavod Academy, is excited to be instructing students in a new program the academy is developing for students with special needs. “Intro to Dance is for (students) age 13 and up,” said Haney, who has experience teaching students with developmental disabilities. Two classes, which are being held weekly, will explore a variety of types of dance. Students who take the class will have the opportunity to perform in Cavod’s annual recital.

Intro to Dance classes are held on Mondays from 4 to 5 p.m. and on Thursdays from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. at Cavod, 665 W. Main St., New Holland. Savannah Huyard is teaching one of the classes, and Haney teaches the other class. According to Connie Dienner, executive director with Cavod, the idea for the program grew out of caregiver Deb Bacon’s requests for a class. “(Bacon) brings her clients to Cavod, and she has asked us to (hold dance classes),” explained Dienner, who added that seeing the value in each person is a foundational concept at the academy.
