Dog Park Open For Pets, Special Events BY FRANCINE FULTON

Pet owners looking for a safe place to walk, run and exercise their dogs are invited to visit the Danielle Ruiz-Murphy Dog Park, located on Route 345 in Birdsboro, just past the Matthew Brooke Professional Center. The Humane Society of Berks County maintains the facility as a free community dog park for local residents. The site, with an entrance marked by a large iron gate, is open seven days a week during daylight hours. “It was closed because of COVID-19 for a time but reopened at the beginning of July when we moved into the green phase in the state of Pennsylvania, said Lauren Henderson, director of events and corporate relations for Humane Pennsylvania, noting that the dog park is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year.

Honey Brook Library To Hold Virtual 5K Because its major fundraiser was canceled due to COVID-19, the Honey Brook Community Library will hold Run for Reading, a virtual 5K run/walk, during October. Proceeds from registration fees will benefit the library. As part of the first-time event, runners and walkers will be asked to complete a 5K (3.1-mile) run or walk any time between Saturday, Oct. 3, and Saturday, Oct. 31. There is no need to complete the entire 5K at once; the distance can be broken up over time. Serious 5K runners can race to compete for the best times. “When you register, there will be a spot to enter your information, explained library director Jennifer Spade. “It will create a list of people and times for all to see. She noted that those who are already running marathons or half marathons are invited to

dedicate their first 3.1 miles to Run for Reading. Participants will be asked to post their running and walking photos on social media with the hashtag #HoneyBrookCommunityLibrary. “(The virtual run/walk) is replacing our Beef and Brew planned for April at the Honey Brook American Legion, Spade noted. “That is the largest fundraiser that the library board does. The idea to hold the virtual event came from library board member Kitty Goetz, who had previously been involved in a similar event for a different nonprofit organization. “We quickly had to get it together while the weather was still good, noted Spade. “October will be a nice time to do this. Those who register by Oct. 3 will receive an event T-shirt, which will be white with blue print. There will be an option for pickup at the library, 687 Compass Road, Honey

Despite challenges, including a hurricane-related power outage, a successful Chesco Junior Livestock Invitational Show and Sale was held from Aug. 3 to 5 in Honey Brook. The show and sale generally held during the annual Chester County 4-H Fair, which did not take place this summer because the fair was canceled due to the coronavirus

Michael Corcoran and his son, Brandon, recently visited the Danielle Ruiz-Murphy Dog Park in Birdsboro with their dog Josie, a redbone coonhound, which they adopted from the Brandywine Valley SPCA.

Brook, on Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 19 and 20, or participants can have the T-shirts shipped directly. The cost of the T-shirts is being sponsored by the Honeybrook Golf Club. Spade pointed out that the virtual 5K is ideal for families and other groups of people such as running clubs, walking groups or co-workers. Those who sign up as a group only have to pay the credit card fee one time. “The board was trying to find something that appealed to a lot of people and (could be held) over a period of time, said Spade. “While a lot of things are (canceled), this is something people can do as a family or a group of friends. “There are no prizes; this is just for fun, added Goetz. “That’s part of the reason it’s so inexpensive. Proceeds from the fundraiser will allow the library to continue to offer services such as computer internet access. “This is a crucial event since our other fundraisers are not

Honey Brook Community Library director Jennifer Spade (left) and board members Kitty Goetz (center) and Dawn Schaffer invite the community to take part in the library’s Run for Reading, a virtual 5K run/walk, during October.

The park features two fully fenced areas where dogs can run and play off-leash and socialize with other dogs. One side of the dog park is for small or shy dogs and the other is for large and active dogs. All dogs that visit the park must be fully vaccinated and licensed and

It comes as no surprise that we continue to face many of the challenges we have experienced over the past six months. Who hasn’t used the word “uncertainty more times than they can count? Despite this uncertainty, we have worked hard to keep our families and community safe while providing positive, creative ways to reinforce that we are in this together. We encourage you to continue sharing your stories and connecting with us on social media so we can go on spreading all the good we see in this world. At Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc. (EPC), we are committed to making adjustments within the current circumstances to try to continue to regularly provide you with the community news you expect to read in this paper. EPC has not been immune to the tough decisions that we’ve all had to make during this pandemic. With our highest priority being to maintain the best local news coverage, we have made some changes that you will begin to see starting this week. To that end, this community paper will be distributed to your household every two weeks, encompassing the entire coverage area. While you will not receive the printed edition each week, we invite you to visit us online at townlively.com/read and sign up for our weekly email newsletters for fresh content EVERY WEEK. This won’t be for long. We anticipate this as a temporary measure as we navigate the next few months. As we move forward, every effort will be made to continue to supply you with your community’s news and advertising messages. It is absolutely paramount that we support our local businesses by shopping locally, eating locally, and utilizing our local service

industries. Additionally, our nonprofit organizations play a pivotal role in filling the needs within our communities. Let’s continue to live out what is at the heart of community together, we can do great things! On behalf of the EPC team, we THANK YOU for your loyal readership and commitment to your community and neighbors EVERY DAY. Sincerely, Jocelyn Engle Publisher jrengle@engleonline.com

The TVSD Alumnus nominee must be a graduate of Twin Valley High School but does not need to currently live in the area. The deadline for nominations is Wednesday, Sept. 30. Award winners will be rec-

helped people or did something special related to COVID19 relief,” explained Lynn Weller, TVCEF director. “It can be a business, a group, an organization or individuals.” She noted that nominees in that category may include people who made masks, raised money or provided food or services for residents in need. “I’m hoping we get

ognized at TVCEF’s Virtual Gala, which will air on Friday, Nov. 6, at www.tvcef.org. “It will probably be on YouTube or Vimeo, but the link to the watch the ceremony will be on our website,” Weller noted. In a typical year, about 150 to 200 people would attend the awards gala, which has been held at various locations through the years, including the Reading Crowne Plaza in 2019 and the French Creek Golf Club in Elverson in 2018. “Normally, for the in-person event, (award winners) have an opportunity to invite family or friends. For this year, we are hoping to get video clips of the winners to air,” Weller said. In lieu of the auctions typically held at the gala, an online auction will start on Friday, Oct. 30. There will also be fundraisers held at local restaurants. Details of these events are forthcoming on the TVEF website. “Normally, we have a big benefit auction with a live auction and a silent auction and then we bring the winners up at the awards ceremony,” said Weller. “With the changes this year, we will have restaurant fundraisers for days before the event and the online auction. When we air our Community Leadership Awards ceremony, we will close the online auction.” Those who would like to nominate someone they believe is deserving of recognition are asked to visit www.tvcef.org to submit a nomination. Members of the TVCEF will select one winner for each category. “This is an opportunity to recognize those who go above and beyond the normal contributions made by others and are known as leaders in the community,” Weller said. TVCEF is a nonprofit organization created and administered by an independent board of community volunteers serving Berks and Chester counties. According to www.tvcef.org, TVCEF’s mission is “to serve as a link between business, the school district and the community to provide educational, cultural and recreational opportunities.” TVCEF provides annual grants to Twin Valley schools, scholarships to students and events for the community. In the past five years, TVCEF has awarded more than $100,000 to Twin Valley school programs and scholarships. Church Installs Shepherd’s Pantry Food Box BY FRANCINE FULTON

Because COVID-19 has temporarily shut down the Honey Brook Presbyterian Church’s Shepherd’s Kitchen Meal Ministry, which offered a free monthly meal to the community, the church recently announced its newest ministry, the Shepherd’s Pantry, an outdoor box that offers free food for anyone in the community in need. Posted on the box is a sign that reads, “If you have need, please take. If you have excess, please leave.” Church members will stock the box, but the community is also invited to participate

Pastor Bill Wisneski recently announced that Honey Brook Presbyterian Church has installed an outdoor Shepherd’s Pantry that contains free nonperishable food for those in need.

red church doors are, and there is paper, a pen and a little shelf for people to write down their prayers,” explained Wisneski. The prayer requests can then be slipped through the slot on the front of the box below the miniature church building. Community members may submit prayer requests and place them in the box anonymously. “(The prayer box) is for anybody walking (or driving) by. You don’t have to give your name,” said Wisneski, noting that the prayer requests are passed on to members of the congregation, who pray for those needs on a regular basis. The congregation has not met in person

since the stay-at-home order. However, Sunday drive-through prayer services, utilizing an FM transmitter, have been offered since July. “We are planning to reopen the sanctuary on Sunday, Sept. 20,” Wisneski reported, noting that social distancing will be utilized and attendees will be required to wear masks. Honey Brook Presbyterian Church is located at 4331 Horseshoe Pike (Route 322), Honey Brook. ongoing efforts to help the community. “We needed to do something since we could not do our meal. Our last meal was in March,” Wisneski said, explaining that the meals were open to everyone, regardless of income, church affiliation or place of residence. “(Congregation members) wanted to donate because they feel called to do that. It is beautiful when people take ownership of something and make it happen. We hope this will be a blessing to the Honey Brook community.” In addition to the pantry, the church offers a prayer box, which is located on its front lawn. The wooden box, which was installed in September of 2017, resembles a miniature church building, complete with red doors and a church steeple. “The top section opens up where the

The pantry is part of the church’s
