Queen for a Day
BY FRANCINE FULTON
Queen for a Day, a time to honor and pamper women who provide care for a family member with a disability, will be offered at Brick Lane Community Church in Elverson on Saturday, Oct. 5, from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Throughout the event, women will enjoy a free lunch, craft activities, manicures and more.
According to event organizer Carol Hoke, this is the 19th year that the church has offered the Queen for a Day program, which is designed to provide the women with support and encouragement. “(Sometimes you feel) you are the only one walking this road,” said Hoke. “(Seeing) all of these people having a more difficult than normal life because of a disability day in and day out is an encouragement.”
The event will begin with registration, and muffins, yogurt and coffee will be served. Women can also sign up for the various free programs that are being offered. “We are offering haircuts and styling, AromaTouch therapy and a Bible discussion group,” said Hoke. Also offered will be a pressed flower craft, a flower arranging class, a pen and ink drawing craft, a nutrition seminar and a sewing activity.
“Registration will be for an hour. You can come in and learn to know other people and enjoy the quietness,” said Hoke.
Following registration, there will be a worship service in the church sanctuary with music, Scripture readings, a talk by a guest speaker and a symbolic Blessing of Hands ceremony.
“There is a pitcher and a bowl, and (attendees) wash their hands because their hands are what are being used to serve,” Hoke

explained. “After the ceremony, all of the volunteers that are present come in and make a circle around the guests. That helps (the women) to know how many people are loving on them that day.” She said that youths who are washing the ladies’ cars
in the church parking lot also participate.
Lunch will include a baked potato bar served buffet style, along with soup. Tables in the church’s fellowship hall will be set up by church members. “Each table has its own setting of china.

There are also fun games (and) icebreakers,” Hess pointed out. “The other group is called Operation Unshackled. That’s an educational group on human trafficking - how to recognize it and report it.”

In addition, Mom Co., which stands for Moms in Community, meets at the church on the second and fourth Wednesdays of the month from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Formerly known as MOPS (Mothers of Preschoolers), Mom Co. is a community of mothers who share ideas and support one another in raising children.

TCYM (Totally Committed Youth Ministry) is a ministry for teenagers in grades seven to 12 that meets at the church on the first and
third Fridays of each month from 6:30 to 8 p.m. “It provides many opportunities for our teens to grow in their faith while forming lifelong friendships,” said Hess, noting that food, lessons and games are part of each meeting. “It’s usually high energy like most youth groups.”

Queen for a Day
Church members will sign up if they want to set a table,” Hoke explained. “It’s good for people who can’t be there to help on that day. So they come the day before and decorate their table and come afterwards and take it down.”
Offered during the afternoon will be foot massages, manicures and hand waxing, which is a therapeutic treatment were people place their hands in tubs of warm paraffin wax.
About 100 church volunteers will work during the day, along with those who decorate the fellowship hall in advance and the cleanup crew.
Hoke, whose husband, Curtis, is a quadriplegic, attended a similar Queen for a Day event in Lancaster and decided to bring it to Brick Lane. “I was greatly encouraged. I met people and (realized) I am not in this by myself,” she stated. “I said we could do it here at our church. We had 35 the first year and we had
enough interest and manpower to double it, and then we topped it off at 80.”
She noted that Curtis, a church deacon, presents a dinner and square dance for couples affected by disability at the church every spring.
Brick Lane Community Church is located at 52 S. Brick Lane, Elver-
son. Registration for Queen for a Day is limited to 80 participants. If the event reaches capacity, there will be a waiting list. Child care will not be provided. To register, visit www.brick52.org/act-now and choose “Attend Queen for a Day.” Those with questions may contact the church office at 610-286-6790 or info.desk@brick52.org.

include moon bounces, games, face painting and an art bus. Allison Ueland of Party Animals Express will present a program with live animals. “The kids love it because she engages them and they see animals they normally would not see up close,” said Kutz. “She gives them background (information) and explains facts about the animals.”
The day will also feature an apple baking contest. Entries must be delivered between 9 and 9:30 a.m., and judging will start at 10 a.m. The entries will be judged on presentation, aroma, taste, creativity and overall use of apples. A complete list of baking contest rules can be found at www.face book.com/stpaulsdouglassvillepa.
People are also invited to bring their pets to the festival at 9 a.m. for the blessing of the animals by the church’s pastor, the Rev. Gregory Frey. “It’s also the pet owner that is receiving the blessing as well,” noted Kutz.
Food available throughout the day will include apple pancakes for breakfast, hamburgers and hot dogs for lunch and new items like Reuben sandwiches, apple chips
and waffles and ice cream. Homemade apple dumplings and apple pie will be available until they sell out. “People should get there early. The apple dumplings and pie sell out fast,” said Kutz. Kutz noted that church members gather prior to the festival to prepare the homemade pies and dumplings. “They are made in the church kitchen. There is a kitchen crew who has been around for a while. (They have been using the) same recipe for years,” he said. “They will start on the Wednesday before (the festival), and they will be baking Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.”
He noted that several varieties of apples will be used. “We are getting them from three or four different orchards in the area. Between the pies and dumplings we use about 1,000 apples,” Kutz said, noting that church volunteers must peel and core each apple prior to baking.
Pies and dumplings can be purchased for takeout. Other items will be available to eat on-site during the festival. “There are things that are being served in the kitchen that are apple focused - caramel apples; apple chips, which are cored and sliced apples with hot caramel over them; apple cider doughnuts; and apples and ice cream.” He added that homemade pumpkin rolls will also be available.
According to Kutz, the festival ran for 10 years until the pandemic put the event on hiatus in 2020. The last festival at the church took place in 2019. “We as a church love having it,” he said, explaining why the event was brought back to the community. “We wanted to give an opportunity for families to get out and have an enjoyable day.”
St. Paul’s Lutheran Church is located at 548 Old Swede Road, Douglassville. Drivers should turn onto Route 662 from Route 422 at Michael’s Restaurant and travel about 1 mile to find the church on the left. For more information, visit the previously mentioned Facebook page or contact the church office at 610-385-6616. More information about the church is available at www.stpaulsdouglassville.com.
Honey Brook Women’s Club elects
officers
The Honey Brook Women’s Club, a community service and social club that formed in 1975, recently elected officers. Leading the club this year will be Karen Hurst, president; Audrey Cleaver, vice president; Mim Wilson, secretary; and Cheryl Davidson, treasurer.
Members pay an annual fee to participate in the club, which raises funds for a variety of local charities. In 2024, the club presented grants to Honey Brook Presbyterian Church, the Honey Brook Community Library, the Honey Brook Food Pantry, the Honey Brook Fire Company, Elverson-Honey Brook Area EMS, the Honey Brook Youth Center and Steeple to People Ministries. The club also presents a scholarship to a Twin Valley High School graduating senior.
The club raises funds for the community by selling food on Harmony Days, holding an annual tea at the church and presenting a children’s Christmas store during the Honey Brook Lions Club Breakfast with Santa program.
Community service projects held during the year include providing snacks for children who participate in the Honey Brook Lions Club
Halloween Parade, distributing homemade Christmas cookies to homebound individuals during the month of December and providing meals to the Honey Brook Youth Center.
The Honey Brook Women’s Club meets on the second Wednesday of the month at 6:30 p.m. from September through June, at Honey Brook Presbyterian Church, 4331 Horseshoe Pike (Route 322), Honey Brook, with the last meeting being an installation dinner for new club officers held at Waynebrook Inn.
Members do not have to be resi-
dents of Honey Brook to participate.
For more information, women may join the “Honey Brook Women’s Club” group on Facebook.

Club to host fall car, truck and bike show
BY FRANCINE FULTON
Members of the Draggin’Wagons Car Club will present their annual fall car, truck and bike show on Saturday, Sept. 28, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Honeybrook Gardens, 3940 Horseshoe Pike (Route 322), Honey Brook. Owners of all makes and models of classic, antique and custom vehicles, including street rods, muscle cars, antique cars, motorcycles and trucks, are invited to participate.
At the upcoming event, trophy winners will be selected in nontraditional classes such as Chopped and Dropped, Cool Convertible, Cool Commercial, Cool Custom, Great Graphics, Street Sleeper, Hottest Hot Rod, Cool Coupe, Memory Lane, Wild Card and Class Act. Candy Diehm will present the Draggin’ Wagons Club President’s Choice award.
Those who choose to display their vehicles at the upcoming show will be asked to make a registration donation. Registration will take place on the day of the show. There will be no admission fee for spectators, but the club asks that all guests bring nonperishable food
items for the Honey Brook Food Pantry (HBFP).
Event organizers are hoping to attract at least 100 cars. “The last couple of shows have been in the high 80s. We are getting close to 100 (vehicles),” said club member Ray Marvin, adding, “When the participants are leaving, they will get a bag of chips and a drink. It’s our way of saying thanks.”
Food and ice cream will be offered for sale throughout the day, and a DJ will play oldies music. There will also be a gift basket auction. “We have 16 to 18 baskets,” said Marvin, noting that baskets generally include a car wash bucket, a flower arrangement and a basket filled with chocolate.
Membership forms and packets of information about the club will be available at the car show for prospective members.
According to a history of the club provided by Frank Hess, treasurer, the club was originally called the Draggin’ Wagons Hot Rod Club. It was formed in 1957 by a group of young men and women from Honey Brook and surrounding towns. Walter “Packy” Deck was the president, and members included
Dottie Deck, Jim Fagan, Bob Filmore, Bev Kemper, Lyn Kemper, Mabel Delp Reese, Allen Sampson and Paul Weaver.
The original Draggin’ Wagons Hot Rod Club held its own public dances at the Honey Brook Fire Company hall with live bands such as Jammie Brown, Speedy Boyer and the Rocketones, Butch Mohl and the Galaxies and others.
In 2008, the Draggin’ Wagons Car Club was reorganized and renamed by a group of the original members and many new car enthusiasts.
The car club holds two annual shows - one in the spring and another in the fall. This year marks the third time the club is holding the fall event at Honeybrook Gardens, which was formerly the Honey Brook Elementary School. Past car shows were held at Kemper Equipment in Honey Brook.
The club has more than 60 members. Club meetings are held on the first Tuesday of the month at 7 p.m. at the Honey Brook Lions Club, with the exception of December, when the club holds its annual holiday dinner. At the March meeting, the club members nominate and vote on the nonprofit organizations that they will support in the coming year.
During the Christmas holiday season, the club “adopts” several families in the area; the family names are provided by Steeple to People Ministries. The club pur -
chases toys, clothing and gift cards and provides a holiday dinner to each of the families.
“We help around 15 children (representing) three to five families. We get stuff for the kids and the parents and all the fixings of a turkey dinner. All of that is delivered,” Marvin said, adding that the club also makes donations to the HBFP.
Marvin, who owns several classic cars, including a 1954 Ford convertible and a 1931 Ford street rod, describes the club as social and charitable. For example, the group regularly takes part in outings such as dinners at local eateries. “(The club) was founded by car enthusiasts, but there is a real focus on the social side,” said Marvin. “We have members that don’t even have (classic) cars. It’s not a requirement. It’s people hanging out and having fun, and we give several thousand dollars a year to charities (in Chester, Berks and Lancaster counties).”
In the event of rain, the car show will be held on Monday, Sept. 30, beginning at 5 p.m. Cancellation information will be posted on the club’s Facebook page on the morning of Sept. 28.
For more information about the club and the car show, visit www .facebook.com/DragginWagons CarClub. Those with questions may email dragginwagonscc@ gmail.com.
