Visiting Kittens Bring Comfort To Hospice Patients BY FRANCINE FULTON

A fall flea market will be featured during the Hay Creek Valley Historical Associationâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Apple Fest at Historic Joanna Furnace on Oct. 10 and 11.

Festival To Feature Apple Dishes, Flea Market And More Although a few changes have been made due to COVID-19, this yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Apple Festival at Historic Joanna Furnace will go on, offering an assortment of apple dishes, as well as a flea market and fall craft fair. The Hay Creek Valley Historical Association (HCVHA) will present the Apple Festival on Saturday, Oct. 10, and Sunday, Oct. 11, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Apple favorites that will be offered include apple cider, apple pie, apple crisp, apple fritters, apple dumplings and apple cinnamon bread. Also for sale will be the traditional snitz un knepp, which is apples and dumplings. This year there will be no apple dessert contest and no apple pancake breakfast. However, egg and bacon breakfast sandwiches will be available. HCVHA volunteers will prepare open fire cooked soups throughout the weekend, as well as chicken potpie. Soup varieties will include chicken corn noodle, beef vegetable and ham and bean. Soup can be purchased by the quart or by the bowl. Other foods available at the event will include hot dogs and a box meal that will include a sausage

sandwich with french fries and a beverage. There will be no tables and chairs available for visitors. However, festival attendees are invited to bring their own chairs or blankets for seating while keeping socially distant. There will be curbside pickup for customers who prefer not to enter the festival. People are encouraged to preorder their food at www.haycreek.org/food-raiser. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Ordering guarantees that you get what you want because we will only be preparing a select amount,â&#x20AC;? noted Mark Zerr, HCVHA executive director. Despite similar restrictions that were put in place during the Hay Creek Mini Festival on Sept. 12 and 13, the event was a success. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We had quite a few people that walked through and shopped from our vendors,â&#x20AC;? said Zerr. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Some people did the curbside pickup, and Boy Scouts pulled their food for them. We will do that again for the Apple Festival.â&#x20AC;? The flea market will be open, and craft vendors will also set up booths during the Apple Festival. Individuals who are interested in setting up a flea market booth should call Kathleen Rhode at 610-914-8152.

Booth setup will be on Friday, Oct. 9, from noon to 6 p.m. and Oct. 10 from 6 to 8 a.m. Food sales will not be permitted in the flea market. Childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s activities will not be held this year, and the historic buildings will also remain closed. However, scarecrow kits will be available to purchase to take home, or visitors can sign up for a time slot to make a scarecrow at the festival. Time slots can be reserved by emailing Tammy at leah19551@yahoo.com. Hand sanitizing stations will be set up at various booths, and everyone will be required to sanitize their hands at the festival gate. All outside vendors will be asked to provide hand sanitizing bottles at their booths. Face masks will be required at the gate area and while purchasing items from vendors. Everyone will be required to social distance at the event. Historic Joanna Furnace, 1250 Furnace Road, Geigertown, is located just off Route 10, 3 miles north of Morgantown. Experiencing the fall season in a scenic location, taking part in crafts and hands-on learning programs and hiking outdoors are just some of the activities that preschoolers can enjoy as part of the Little Wonders Nature Classes currently being offered by the Green Valleys Watershed Association (GVWA). While heath care workers traditionally use therapy dogs to provide comfort to patients, Melissa McCarron, a licensed clinical social worker, has come up with an additional way to bring joy to her hospice patients - kitten therapy. For the past several months, McCarron has picked up kittens waiting to be adopted from the Brandywine Valley SPCA in West Chester and brought them to her workplace, Holisticare Hospice in Berwyn. At first, McCarron brough her therapy dog, Pearl, to visit with the patents, often dressing the chihuahua in little outfits. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Her personality is so mild-mannered, and she is very loving,â&#x20AC;? McCarron recalled. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I knew she would be a

Dog owners must clean up after their dogs; waste bags are provided. A pavilion with benches is available and there is also a dog trail that winds around the property for on-leash exercise. J.P. Mascaro & Sons and the Mascaro family established the center in 2010, which includes the dog park, as well as a multi-acre equine rescue center. “The dog park land was given to us by J.P. Mascaro, and it is named for someone in their family,” noted Henderson. A plaque at the site features a photo of Ruiz-Murphy and dedicates the park in her name. Because of her size, she would climb in their beds, so it was some extra TLC.” When the pandemic began, McCarron decided it might be easier to bring kittens into the hospice facility instead. She coordinated the visits with the SPCA, where she volunteers as a pet photographer. “I approached the SPCA and they loved the idea and gave me permission,” she said. “The kittens have been easier to transport. They are quieter and cuddlier. Many of the older folks are fragile, so I have to be mindful of that as well.” The hospice facility encourages pet visits, which is especially important during COVID-19. “I love working with my patients, and it makes my heart hurt when they are sad,” McCarron shared. “I have seen more

people decline from the social isolation and not being about to see family and friends and eat in the dining room. It is so detrimental not to have that interaction. I was trying to come up with something to bring them joy.” She pointed out that two of her patients in particular especially love cats and both of them immediately perk up when a kitten is brought to their rooms. “One of the older ladies wasn’t feeling good, and when I brought the kitten out, she said, ‘I am feeling better already.’ She snuggled with the kitten for an hour and she was so happy,” McCarron said. She noted that the visits are good for the kittens as well, noting that the outings with the kittens are limited to three hours. “It’s helpful for the kittens because a lot of them are not socialized,” she said. “It

gets them used to being handled by a person.” McCarron plans to continue the visits with the kittens on an ongoing basis. “It’s so gratifying to see the joy that a kitten can bring; it’s amazing,” she stated. “Even if you are not a cat person, kittens are so cuddly and cute. They purr and love on you.” McCarron encourages the public to support the Brandywine Valley SPCA by volunteering, adopting pets or making a financial donation. “We just rescued 182 cats from a hoarding situation in Delaware,” she said. “Believe it or not, these cats are so sweet and loving, but a lot of them need medical attention.” For more details about the Brandywine Valley SPCA or to view adoptable kittens and other pets, readers may visit www.facebook.com /BrandywineSPCA or www.bvspca.org.

Because its major fundraiser was canceled due to COVID-19, the Honey Brook Community Library will hold Run for Reading, a virtual 5K run/walk, during October. Proceeds from registration fees will benefit the library. As part of the first-time event, runners and walkers will be asked to complete a 5K (3.1-mile) run or walk any time

between Saturday, Oct. 3, and Saturday, Oct. 31. There is no need to complete the entire 5K at once; the distance can be broken up over time. Serious 5K runners can race to compete for the best times. “When you register, there will be a spot to enter your information,” explained library director Jennifer Spade. “It will create a list of people and times for all to see.” She noted that those who are already

Participants will be asked to post their running and walking photos on social media with the hashtag #HoneyBrookCommunityLibrary. “(The virtual run/walk) is replacing our Beef and Brew planned for April at the Honey Brook American Legion,” Spade noted. “That is the largest fundraiser that the library board does.” The idea to hold the virtual event came from library board member Kitty Goetz, who had previously been involved in a similar event for a different nonprofit organization. “We quickly had to get it together while the weather was still good,” noted Spade. “October will be a nice time to do this.” Those who register by Oct. 3 will receive an event T-shirt, which will be white with blue print. There will be an option for pickup at the library, 687 Compass Road, Honey Brook, on Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 19 and 20, or participants can have the T-shirts shipped directly. The cost of the T-

shirts is being sponsored by the Honeybrook Golf Club. Spade pointed out that the virtual 5K is ideal for families and other groups of people such as running clubs, walking groups or co-workers. Those who sign up as a group only have to pay the credit card fee one time. “The board was trying to find something that appealed to a lot of people and (could be held) over a period of time,” said Spade. “ While a lot of things are (canceled), this is something people can do as a family or a group of friends.” “There are no prizes; this is just for fun,” added Goetz. “That’s part of the reason it’s so inexpensive.” Proceeds from the fundraiser will allow the library to continue to offer services such as computer internet access. “This is a crucial event since our other fundraisers are not possible due to social distancing constrictions,” Spade noted. Sheetz Donation Drive Public Auction Raises Funds For Charity Personal Property Sheetz recently announced that Sheetz For the Kidz, an employee-driven charity supporting underprivileged children, raised a record-setting $839,460 during its annual month of instore fundraising in July.
