Conestoga Christian School To Hold Barbecue, Auction BY FRANCINE FULTON

W

hile the event has been slightly modified this year due to COVID-19, Conestoga Christian School (CCS) will hold its 47th annual chicken barbecue and auction on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 16 and 17. This year, the barbecue dinner will be takeout only. Each dinner will include a half-chicken, applesauce, chips, a dinner roll and butter, a whoopie pie and a choice of water or lemonade. Half-chickens only will also be available. To order chicken barbecue tickets in advance, readers may visit w w w. c o n e s t o g a c h r i s t i a n . n e t /auction2020. Dinners may be picked up in the school’s front parking lot from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Oct. 16. This year, drive-through dinner pickup will not be available at Conestoga Mennonite Church, located across from CCS. “We will turn our entire school parking lot into a four-lane drive-through,” explained Michelle Parris, CCS admissions director. “We are trying to do everything as efficiently as possible.”

Also on Oct. 16, a gift certificate store will be open outside the school, and there will be homemade apple dumplings available for purchase. A live auction will be held on Oct. 17 from 9 to 11 a.m. It will take place outside under a tent behind the elementary school. “Masks will be required inside and if social distancing cannot be achieved outside,” Parris noted. This year, there will be no alumni game, no children’s area and no food tent. “ We downsized the amount of food we are serving. We will have a coffee area that will serve specialty coffees, cold drinks and our famous apple dumplings. They are made at the school on the Wednesday before (the auction) by parent volunteers,” said Parris. The live auction will feature a selection of items, experiences, artwork, quilts and homemade jams and yogurt. Auction highlights will include a 1999 Volkswagen Jetta, a John Deere tractor, 150 gallons of heating oil and two-night stays at local inns, including Brownstone Colonial Inn Bed and Breakfast and Laurel Springs Guest House.

Dancing In The Living Room BY FRANCINE FULTON

On select Saturdays from now through March of 2021, youths with special needs and their families are invited to take part in dance parties, which are currently being held virtually via Zoom. The dance parties, themed “Everybody In,” were previously held at Grove United Methodist Church in West Chester, and they were hosted by Lizzy Stahelek, who organized the events in order to earn her Girl Scout Gold Award. Team Promotes Competitive Mountain Biking BY FRANCINE FULTON

“No one sits on the bench” is the motto of the Twin Valley Mountain Biking Team (TVMBT), a group that provides an opportunity for youths to compete in a fun and exciting sport. The team’s goal is to promote a strong body, strong mind and strong character for sixth- to 12thgrade student-athletes. The mountain biking team, which formed in 2016, is one of more than 35 school teams in the state that are part of the

Pennsylvania Interscholastic Cycling League (PICL). “For the fall season, we start practice on July 1, and races begin in September and the season is over by Nov. 1,” said coach Sylvia Deye, who

founded the team along with her husband, Neil. “We teach the kids how to ride their bikes and we have a one-month skills training, so we make sure the kids are confident and safe on the trail.” See Mountain Biking pg 5

When OneRunTogether (ORT) was founded by Chester County resident Vern Murphy in 2009 as a way to honor his late wife, Beth, who passed away from breast cancer, it was based on the idea of raising money to support local cancer patients by holding running and walking events throughout the area. Despite the pandemic, ORT has continued to raise funds by sponsoring virtual 5K and 10K events instead. ORT presented the “Creamery Hustle in June, which is normally held at Penn State Berks in Reading, and the “Jolly Jingle in July, where registered runners and walkers received wrapped Christmas presents. The next event on the ORT schedule will be the first “Ready Set GLOW! Virtual 5K/10K Race. Runners and walkers have from 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 24, until 10 a.m. on Sunday, Oct. 25, to complete the event.

“Last July, we had our first glow run and it was a huge success. There were about 200 people there, and it was held at Honey Brook Golf Course at night and we gave all of the participants glow sticks, said ORT volunteer Sharon Valentino, one of the race coordinators. “This (virtual 5K/10K) is replacing what we would have done this summer without COVID. Because of social distancing, participants will be asked to complete a 5K or 10K on their own, whether it be running or walking on trails, roads or on treadmills. Tshirts and glow items will be provided to registrants while supplies last. Participants are encouraged to run at night with their glow sticks. “It was set up as an evening race, but if they run during the day, that’s fine, said Valentino. The top prizes for the overall male and female winners of the 5K run and the 10K run will be given an assortment of glow items.

The virtual event will be based on an honor system, and runners are encouraged to measure the 5K (3.1 miles) or the 10K (6.2 miles) with a running app or a treadmill. Only those who run the 5K or 10K will be eligible for the top prizes. Participants are asked to post their photos at www.facebook.com/onerun together. “For the July race, we asked people to put their photos on Facebook wearing race gear, which included a Santa hat with a OneRun pin on it, said Valentino. All proceeds from the event will benefit ORT, which provides financial support to cancer patients. For example, those who qualify have received grants for their mortgage payments, rent, utility bills, car repairs and home repairs. Since 2011, ORT has given more than 385 grants totaling more than $180,000. Spiritual support is also provided. Normally, Murphy personally delivers the grant money to patients throughout Berks and Chester counties and prays with each patient and his or her family. He also presents them with a Bible donated by East Brandywine Baptist Church. Because of the pandemic and to protect the health of patients undergoing chemotherapy, Murphy has instead personally called each grant recipient over the past several months. Bibles and the grant money were sent through the mail. To register for the upcoming virtual event, readers may visit www.oneruntogether.org and choose “Events and Races and then “Ready, Set, GLOW 5K Run/Walk.

Virtual Dances from pg 1 Because of COVID-19, Lizzy decided to hold the dances virtually instead. Youths and their family members can now dance to music wherever they choose, whether it be in their kitchen or living room or even outdoors. To access the Zoom sessions, readers may search for “Everybody In” on Facebook.

Upcoming virtual dances will be held on Saturdays, Oct. 17 and 31, Nov. 7 and 21 and Dec. 19. Dances in 2021 are scheduled for Jan. 9 and 23, Feb. 6 and 20 and March 6 and 20. “We decided to go virtual so everyone would be safe. We are hoping to get back to the church maybe in January,” said Lizzy.

Lizzy Stahelek (right) and her sister, Ally, dance and sing in their living room as part of “Everybody In” virtual dance parties.

Lizzy’s younger sister, Ally, who has special needs, was the inspiration for the project. The goal of the dances is to provide a place where everyone could dance in his or her own way. In addition to dancing, the in-person parties included special features such as the limbo, conga lines and parachute games. Participants were also invited to play with balloons and hula hoops. The virtual dance parties do not feature the special in-person activities, but there is plenty of music and singing along and an opportunity to make song requests. Helping out at the in-person dances were volunteers, including Lizzy’s friends and family members, as well as members of Best Buddies, an organization that provides one-on-one friendships and other services to people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Lizzy, who graduated from Peirce Middle School in West Chester and now attends Henderson High School, recently announced that she is running for Best Buddies Champion of the Year. “Best Buddies is an organization focused on inclusion and friendship with people who have special needs,” Lizzy explained. “I have been involved with Best Buddies

for the past three years. Last year, I had the honor to be the president of the Peirce Middle School chapter.” As a candidate for Best Buddies Champion of the Year, Lizzy said her goal is to raise money and awareness of Best Buddies. “During this time, our friends who have special needs are isolated more than ever,” she stated. “Any contributions to Best Buddies will help with this social isolation by creating more chapters and programs.” To support Lizzy, readers may visit www.bestbuddies champion.org/pennsylvania, select Donate and then Support a Champion and search for Lizzy Stahelek. “The Best Buddies mission of inclusion is important to me because I have a sister who has special needs, and inclusion is a part of my everyday life,” stated Lizzy on her fundraising page. “While my sister, Ally, is younger than me, I have looked up to her all my life in many ways.” For more information about the dance parties or the Best Buddies Champion of the Year program, readers may visit the “Everybody In” Facebook page or https://lizzystahelek.wixsite .com/everybodyin or email lizzy.stahelek@gmail.com.

Mountain Biking from pg 1 Skills training is offered at St. James Lutheran Church in Geigertown, and practice locations include Rustic Park in Birdsboro and Marsh Creek State Park in Eagle.

During meets, members of the Twin Valley Mountain Biking Team ride off-road often on rough terrain.

Sylvia noted that meets have gone on this season during the pandemic, but they have a new format. “What PICL normally does is hold large mass races and riders compete in their age group, she said. “This year, they kept schools isolated and did time trials (instead). (After the stay-at-home order), they were happy to be out on their bikes this season after being cooped up. While team members own their own mountain bikes, the team has several bikes that students may borrow to see if they like the sport, where competitors ride off-road, often over rough terrain. “We use sponsorships and rely on the community and businesses (for financial support), said Sylvia. “We provide the kids with uniforms. The only expenses are the race fees and membership

to the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Cycling League. We also have support for kids who are financially in need. She said that in addition to the physical benefits of mountain bike riding, the sport promotes self-confidence. “These kids become super confident. It’s not an easy sport, Sylvia said. “There is a huge difference in some of the girls. They come in quiet and not talkative and by the time they are done they’re super-confident girls. In addition to Neil and Sylvia, coaches who have been with the team since it formed five years ago are Jon Spahr, Ray Shafer, Lisa Roberts and Ron Coughenour. Seniors graduating this year who have been riding for five years include Reagan Spahr, Mia Deye and Colby Hurley.

“We have 43 kids on our team and the largest girls’ team in the state of Pennsylvania, and they get along super well, Sylvia said, noting that parents also are encouraged to ride with the team during practice sessions. “They love to get muddy. Sometimes we ride in the park with our lights on, Sylvia shared. “They love the camaraderie. They are not necessarily team sport kids. They are science kids, band kids, Girl Scouts and Boys Scouts and kids who are quiet or with ADHD. They love to ride outdoors over rocks and through the trees and making new friends. “ For more information about the TVMBT, readers may visit www.tvmtb.com or w w w. f a c e b o o k . c o m / t w i n valleymtb or email twin valleymtb@gmail.com.

The Chester County government has added a consecutive national recognition for performance management leadership to its list of accolades. The International City/County Management Association (ICMA) recently bestowed a second Certificate of Achievement to the county, recognizing Chester County’s use of performance data in local government management, including training, verification, and public reporting established

through Chester County’s Managing for Results process. Born of Chester County’s Strategic Plan, Managing for Results gives county departments and staff a formula in determining how their work, actions and behavior support the overall strategic direction of the county. Managing for Results also aims to ensure accountability and transparency in Chester County government. The ICMA Certificate of

Achievement is awarded to cities and counties based data collection and verification and the honorees’ actions to ensure reliability, train staff in performance measurement, and report the data to the public through budgets, newsletters, and information to elected officials. Chester County is among 16 jurisdictions to receive the Certificate of Achievement and is one of just 60 recognized by ICMA overall across North America.

Cruise To The Forge Set For Oct. 18 Vision Resources Posts Tip Visitors will be able to view a wide variety of makes and models of cars, trucks and motorcycles during Historic Poole Forge’s annual Cruise to the Forge, set for Sunday, Oct. 18, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The show is free to the public; vehicle owners will be asked to pay a registration fee. Owners of collector and special interest vehicles, as well as car club members, are encouraged to participate. This year’s event will have some changes due to the coronavirus pandemic. “We will not have children’s activities this year, but the playground will be open,” said Dawn Ekdahl, executive director of Historic Poole Forge. “(The event) will be scaled down this year. Basically, it will be more of a car cruise with people driving in to display their cars.” She added that the cars will not be judged this year and that visitors will be asked to practice social distancing. A highlight of the day is always when a professional photographer takes photos of the vehicles as they drive over the site’s covered bridge, which crosses the Conestoga River. “The photos will be printed on-site, and (car owners) will have an opportunity

to buy them,” Ekdahl noted. Craft vendors will be stationed outside this year instead of inside the Pool Forge Ironmaster’s Mansion, and a silent auction will also be located outside. Auction items will include gift cards and items from local businesses. Food will be available for sale by Blue Ribbon Catering, and music will be provided by disc jockey Jay Mattson. Representatives from the Classic Auto Mall in Morgantown will be on hand with information about their car showroom and museum. Visitors will also be able to stroll the grounds. Historic Poole Forge is located at 1940 Main St., Narvon, along Route 23, 7 miles east of New Holland and 5

miles west of Morgantown. For more information about Cruise to the Forge, readers may call 484-797-5302, email hpf1940@gmail.com, visit www.historicpooleforge.org or search for “Historic Poole Forge” on Facebook. In addition to special events, Poole Forge, a nonprofit historic park and recreation facility, is open daily for walking, dog walking, fishing, bicycling and picnicking. The playground and pavilion are now open, and the mansion is once again available for wedding and special event rentals. The site is home to a free sharing library box, where people may borrow a book to enjoy and then return it, or they make keep the book as their own.

Support Group To Meet Virtually The personal and memory care neighborhood at The Heritage of Green Hills in Shillington will host its Wednesday, Oct. 21, support group for caregivers of individuals suffering from dementia, as well as other debilitating diseases, online. Melissa Oley, marketing and admissions liaison for the personal and memory care neighborhood at The Heritage of Green Hills, co-facilitates the monthly caregiver support group with the Delaware

Valley Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association on the third Wednesday of each month from 3 to 4:30 p.m. Oley, who was a social worker prior to her role at The Heritage of Green Hills, said that caregivers of people with debilitating diseases are facing additional pressures and worries during the time of COVID-19. The support group, which is temporarily moved to a virtual meeting, will strive to provide a safe, confidential, sup-

The groups are also designed to educate participants about dementia and help them develop skills and confidence to meet caregiving challenges. To register, readers may visit http://bit.ly/OctHeritage Caregiver or call 800-2723900. To learn more about the group, individuals may contact Oley at 484-755-3228 or moley@heritagegh.com.

In the coming months, the company will introduce convenient meal solutions, products, technologies and services to make it easier for families to gather together. The company recently redesigned its mobile app and website to serve families 24/7 throughout the pandemic. While customers are shopping, the new site provides personalized recommendations, savings and the ability to view the weekly circular. Customers can also use the new mobile app to fill their cart, access personalized savings and manage their Choice Rewards from their phone. The company remains on track to complete the 35 store remodels that are either now underway or will begin in the coming months across the brand. Varying by store, these remodels include the addition of more Beer & Wine Eateries, new amenities, refreshed departments and updated modernized décor both inside and outside the stores. In addition, the company will reveal plans for additional stores across Pennsylvania

later this year, expanding its presence in key markets while also investing in its e-commerce business. As part of the brand relaunch, the company will introduce new work wear for store team members as well as name badges inspired by the For Today’s Table branding. The new work look will consist of red T-shirts and new name badges that will recognize team members who speak other languages or have served in the military. The Giant Company is concentrating its philanthropic efforts on three areas of focus: Changing Children’s Lives, Eliminating Hunger and Healing Our Planet. The company will continue to direct millions of dollars annually in support of nonprofits dedicated to these causes. To that end, the company recently launched a paid volunteerism program, encouraging team members to take an active role in their communities. If God did not want us to have an ac ve role in His plans, He would not have called us to ac on repeatedly throughout Scripture. Again and again, from Genesis to Revela on, He calls on His people to act, to stand against evil, and to stand up for the needy and vulnerable (Isaiah 6:8, Ma hew 28:18-20, Ephesians 5:11, Proverbs 29:2, Proverbs 31:8-9). If we sit on the sidelines while every good thing our na on stands for is destroyed, we will have violated far more Scripture than the handful of passages that may be misused to jus fy inac on. Chris ans o en mes ignore ge ng involved in the vo ng process for several reasons: (1) they don’t believe their vote counts, (2) they have been misinformed, or (3) they have never done it; therefore, it’s hard to break the ice. We encourage you to pray and ask God to help you break free from these fears. We are all called upon to do the right thing. The hard part is finding the courage to stand up, to stand in the gap. However, standing in the gap is the only way to stop this storm. Many Chris ans do not vote because of pressure from their church and community. It is me to fully reverse that habit. We are all called upon to do the right thing. The hard part is finding the courage to stand up, to stand in the gap. Ini ally, you may be judged for doing so. But standing in the gap for good is the only way to stop this storm.

Here’s what you can do today to save the country from violent mobs, immorality, and evil: 1. Get registered to vote. If you’re registered already, decide how you’ll vote. You can vote early by mail, or in-person. Call us and we’ll help you be er understand the op ons Pennsylvania offers: 717-690-1620. 2. Talk to everyone about why you are vo ng and why they should too. 3. Pray for our na on and our na on’s leaders. Please act. You don’t want to wake-up the day a er the 2020 elec on wishing you had done more to save your community and your country. Sincerely, Anonymous Amishman from Wayne County, Ohio Paid for by Amish PAC.
