Each year, millions of young children in impoverished countries receive shoeboxes full of gifts thanks to Operation Christmas Child (OCC), a program of the Samaritan’s Purse ministry. The local community had an opportunity to meet Jaki Steward, a former shoebox recipient, during a program presented on Oct. 6 at Gateway Church in Parkesburg. The program was hosted by Amy and Will Shaw of Chester Springs, who are the OCC area coordinators for the Greater Philadelphia Area Team, which includes Chester and Delaware counties. Steward, 23, explained that when she was only a few months old she was left at an orphanage in Guatemala by her young mother. During Steward’s time at the orphanage, she lived with 70 to 80 other children. She said that one of the worst parts of the experience was sharing a toothbrush with 10 other girls. “At night, we lined up and passed that brush down the line, she noted. “Most of the time, we just used water (to brush), or occasionally, we brushed with soap. She said her favorite memories of living in the orphanage were when American missionaries came to visit. “They came to spend time with us and they gave us hugs, and my favorite part was the candy they would bring us, she said. “I loved how special they made us feel, and we got to eat something besides beans and rice, which is what we ate every day. When the missionaries came, we got spaghetti or pizza. Steward recalled the day that

Jaki Steward spoke about receiving a shoebox gift from Operation Christmas Child during a program at Gateway Church in Parkesburg. Information was also available at the event about National Collection Week, which will take place Nov. 12 through 19. she received her shoebox gift from OCC. “One day we were called into a big room, and I remember sitting there waiting to see what was going to happen, she said. “As we looked around the room, we saw these boxes and then (volunteers) started handing them out. Every one of us was getting a gift. For a lot of us, we had never gotten a gift before. “Inside my box there were crayons and a stuffed animal, but my most favorite gift was getting my own toothbrush, she added. “I knew that I didn’t have to share anymore. Steward’s story also helps to illustrate why toothpaste is no longer allowed to be included in an OCC shoebox. “As I continued to dig further into my shoebox, I spotted a tube of something and I tasted it. I figured it was a type of American candy that I never had before, and I ate the whole thing, Steward said. “They explained to me (later) that it was toothpaste. Steward noted that the small gifts brought the children hours of joy. “The boys loved their soccer balls and their toy cars and their marbles. We played with marbles by the hour in the dirt, she remarked. “We colored every page in the books. She also noted that letters, photos and cards from the families that filled the shoeboxes were also priceless. “A stranger had taken the time to pack this gift for me and they didn’t even know me, she added. At the age of 6, Steward was adopted by an American family and two years later her parents adopted a boy from the same orphanage. Today, Steward is recently married and lives in Maryland. Three years ago she became a national speaker for OCC. “It’s been so much fun, but my favorite part is meeting the amazing volunteers behind the ministry. Without (the volunteers), there wouldn’t be stories like mine, she stated. Prior to Steward’s talk, the Shaws conducted a trivia contest about OCC, giving prizes to the those who came up with the correct answers. They reported that the OCC program, now in its 25th year, has distributed 157 million shoeboxes since its inception. For those who would like to donate a shoebox, National Collection Week will be held from Monday, Nov. 12, through Monday, Nov. 19. Many local churches will accept shoebox See Shoebox pg 10

large or small bag for a suggested fee to fill with books. The Friends will also sell homemade baked goods during the book sale. The community is invited to donate baked goods for the sale by bringing them to the library during regular library hours. “We prefer that people bring items in on Thursday, but they can bring donations any time during the book sale,” said Donaldson. Cakes, cookies and homemade bread will be accepted. Those who donate baked goods should list any ingredients that may be allergens. “Any donations of baked goods are welcome; we just ask that they be clearly marked,” noted Donaldson. Throughout the three-day event, books will be displayed on tables in the library’s community room. Boxes underneath the tables will be used to replenish the supply. In addition to books, other items offered for sale will include puzzles, DVDs, CDs and audio books. The books will be sorted by category, such as mystery/suspense, science fiction, romance, health and fitness, arts and crafts, sports and cookbooks. There will also be children’s books and books for young readers. Donaldson added that valuable or rare books are placed in the classics section. Those who cannot attend the sale may purchase books anytime from the library’s book room, which is located in the lobby. The book room offers hardback and paperback books, DVDs and magazines, all nominally priced. Donations are accepted yearround in the book room. Carts are available for patrons to place donated books. Those who have larger quantities of books to donate should contact the library in advance so arrangements can be made for the items to be placed in the library’s on-site storage shed. Donaldson also announced that the library will hold its third annual seasonal craft fair on Saturday, Oct. 27, from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Children may also trick-or-treat at the event, and candy will be provided; costumes are optional. “(Caernarvon) Township is having a Halloween event that day and (children) can come over after that,” Donaldson said. Children will also be able to make a free craft, and food and beverages will be offered for sale. Donaldson said that a variety of crafts will be available for shoppers to purchase. “We have a lady who makes some handblown ornaments, a lot of home decor, canvas paintings, a number of different jewelry vendors and assorted sewing crafts,” she noted. The Village Library is located at 207 N. Walnut St., Morgantown. The library is open on Mondays from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Wednesdays from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Fridays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. For more information, readers may call 610-286-1022 or visit www.villagelibrary.org or www.facebook.com/VillageLibrary ofMorgantown.

Welsh from pg 1 Sheriff Carolyn Bunny Welsh was included in the Softie Cops 2019 calendar, an initiative of the National Law Enforcement Center on Animal Abuse (NLECAA) and the National Coalition on Violence Against Animals (NCOVAA). Welsh, a lifelong animal advocate, serves as national co-chair of NCOVAA. She is also on the advisory board of NLECAA. The shared mission of both organizations is to provide resources aimed at preventing animal

cruelty. Welsh explained that the organizations work with sheriff’s offices, police departments and all law enforcement agencies throughout the country. The agencies hope that the pairing of some of the nation’s top law enforcers with animals in need will encourage others to go above and beyond to protect animals. Welsh said the dogs and cats used in the calendar were all rescues, many of which were adopted as a result of the promotion. Welsh was teamed with Dante,

compete in the 5K wearing their firefighting gear, which is estimated to weigh between 40 and 60 pounds. “What we’re trying to do is call attention to firefighter fitness,” said Andy Chambers, GMFC assistant fire chief. “If you are going to be a firefighter and go into the building, you have to realize that you have to bring not only just your firefighting skills.” The event, which will also include a 1-mile walk, will take place from 9 a.m. to noon in Wagenseller Park, 140 Park Lane, Glenmoore. To register, readers may visit www.runsignup.com/Race/PA/ Glenmoore/WALLACETRUST5KRunforthe Woods. A link to register for the event is also available at www.facebook.com/ TheWallaceTrust. Same-day registrations will also be accepted. All participants will receive an event T-shirt while supplies last. The 5K will be
professionally timed, and water and snacks will be available before and after the event. Medals will be awarded to the overall male and female winners of the 5K, as well as the first-, second- and thirdplace male and female winners of the 5K in various age groups. There will also be first-, second- and third-place awards for firefighters who are wearing gear. Proceeds from the registration fees will benefit the Wallace Trust, an all-volunteer group that is funded entirely by private donations. “The Wallace Trust was formed in order to hold easements on open space,” explained township supervisor Barbara D’Angelo, Trust president. “People own property and we hold the easements on parkland and on property that has trails on it. We are part of the township’s plan of protecting open space.” She said that the upcoming event is part of an ongoing relationship between the township and the fire company. “The township and the Trust and all the (township residents) are part of one community,” said D’Angelo. “We are accustomed to working together.” Chambers said that firefighters must be in top physical condition when answering calls, particularly those that come in the middle of the night. “If you are asleep and the pager goes off, your body is completely at rest and in a REM sleep position. You are not warmed up,” he stated. “How do you prepare for that? Diet and exercise and smoking have an effect on your ability to do the job.” Chambers, who promotes physical fitness at the fire company, was one of six volunteers from the Glen Moore Fire Company who participated in the recent 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb held at a stadium in Lancaster. The GMFC volunteers were joined by a volunteer from Honey Brook Fire Company as well. The event is held annually to honor and remember the New York firefighters who lost their lives on 9/11. name the social area, which will be announced on the weekend of the event. This year’s main auction items will include handmade quilts, pork meat packages, furniture and artwork. “(Artist) Richard Bollinger is a grandparent of two grandsons who (attend) here. We feel very privileged to have him as a part of our community. He has donated four of his prints,” said Parris, noting that artist Chris Lancer, who is an alumnus of the school, also donated prints, as have artists Jere Brady and Mary Burke. Other donations to be auctioned off will include a go-kart, a handcrafted wooden dollhouse, 150 gallons of heating oil and tickets to a theater in Lancaster and other local attractions. Each class at the school has designed a themed basket to be auctioned at 10:30 a.m. Some of the themes for this year’s baskets are Family Game Night, Camping, Baking and Off to College/My First Apartment. A Philadelphia Eagles-themed basket contains a helmet signed by Carson Wentz, as well as tickets to an Eagles football game. Quilts will be auctioned at 11:30 a.m. One of the quilts was knotted by elementary school students. A children’s area will open at 9 a.m. on Oct. 20. With the purchase of a wristband, children will be able to enjoy supervised entertainment, including activities, games and a bounce house. A food tent will be open on Saturday offering homemade apple dumplings, pork barbecue sandwiches, chicken corn soup, hot dogs and ice cream. Complete details about the auction are available at www. conestogachristian.net/auction -2018. Photos of auction items are updated on a regular basis. The school is located 1 mile west of Morgantown on Route 23. Overflow parking and a shuttle service will be available at Conestoga Mennonite Church. “Cats” from pg 7
R022145
Celia asked if they could do the makeup, and Lauren (McComas, producer) said yes. They researched and drew pictures of the makeup for each cat,” Elliott explained. “It’s a lot of work and a lot of makeup. The cast wears body suits, and the wigs and tails are made of yarn.” She said that the cast members had to learn to be “catlike” in their movements during musical numbers, as well as when they are not actively involved in the dialogue. “Everyone has to act like cats and twirl their tails,” she said. “(The play is) very dance-oriented. We have gymnasts and dancers and people who can sing really well.” Elliott noted that a sneak preview of “Cats” was offered by several cast members during the Eagleview Fall Fest held on Oct. 8 in the Eagleview Town Center. In addition to the director, Renee Chambers-Liciaga, who has Broadway experience, the crew includes: Lauren McComas (producer), Elizabeth Tozer (stage manager), Brooke Spinelli (costumes), Hannah Elliott and Celia Hernandez (makeup), Chelsea Barnett (assistant stage manager), Rob Merow (tech director/set designer) and Mike Toolan (music director). The cast includes: Chelsea Barnett (Alonza), Troy Cooper (Asparagus), Sara Helmers (Bombalurina), Andrew Blank (Bustopher), Rachel Smith (Demeter), Hannah Elliott (Electra), Emily Merow (Grizabella), Courtney Harris(Griddlebone), Schyler Marsh (Growltiger), Melody Stanert (Jellylorum), Brianna Marsh (Jemima/Sillabub), Evan Sykes (Macavity), Andrew Patterson (Mr. Mistoffelees), Julia Kennedy (Mungojerrie), Hudson Marsh (Munkustrap), Josh Calderon (Old Deuteronomy), Drew Kalkiewicz (Plato), Lauren Kennedy (Rumpleteazer), Brooke Spinelli (Tantomile), Stephen Fisher (The Rum Tum Tugger), Keyaira Tozer (Tumblebrutus), Heather Kalkiewicz (Jennyanydots), Sophie Rowland (Skimbleshanks) and Leyla Marusa (Victoria). For more information and to purchase tickets for “Cats,” readers may visit www.saltpa.com/ cats. In addition, a local fast-food restaurant is providing the option of ordering a boxed meal to be included with the ticket price on Fridays and during the 2 p.m. performances on Saturday. For more information, readers may email info@saltpa.com or visit www.facebook.com/ saltperformingarts. The Facebook page contains photos and biographies of all the cast members. Flag Football Tournament, Chicken Barbecue Slated By Ann Mead Ash
R022214
For Jeremy Leaman, founder and director of Ten Million for Christ, who grew up on a farm south of Strasburg, the invitation to lead a Youth Evangelism Service (YES) team to Romania as part of Eastern Mennonite Missions became a life-changing opportunity. “From the spring of 1993 to the summer of 1994, (our team) worked with churches there,” said Jeremy, whose team started a Christian student movement and a church during the 15-month outreach. “I fell in love with the people, the culture, the language, the food, and the beauty of the countryside.” In the fall of 2000, Jeremy returned to Romania, and he fell in love again. “That’s when I fell in love with my wife, Gabriella,” explained Jeremy, noting that Gabriella is from Galati. The couple married in 2001 and returned to the United States to raise their children, but in the last few years, the Leamans felt God nudging them to return to Romania. “We

foundation of their organization. “Ten Million for Christ was birthed from (our) passion for Romania and Eastern Europe,” said Jeremy, who launched the organization in 2017 with help from friends in Lancaster County. The Leamans moved to Florida to take part in a discipleship training school with Youth With a Mission and completed an outreach in Romania with their four children. The organization is overseen by a six-member board, with Keith Yoder from Teaching the Word in Leola serving as chair. Jeremy noted that the ministry hopes to form partnerships with local churches in Romania and Eastern Europe and work with them toward impacting communities for Christ. “Our uniqueness is that one of our goals is to place coaches, consultants, and chaplains into businesses to build a platform to share the Gospel,” Jeremy explained. “We hope to have an influence among business leaders and those who are (still new) to the job and trying to
figure out their place.” Through this strategy, Jeremy hopes to create jobs for business coaches. Over the summer, the Leamans and their children spent nearly three weeks in Romania serving in Cluj-Napoca. “We are hoping to form a collaboration with a church in that area to impact (Cluj-Napoca) for Christ,” said Jeremy. “That is our big goal for the end of the year.” The idea for a flag football fundraiser grew out of Jeremy’s love of holding get-togethers. “This is the biggest party I will probably ever throw,” he said. “I love sports, and I love good competition.” He recalled playing touch football on his family farm during high school and college. “We would mow out a field twothirds of the size of a football field,” he recalled. Readers who would like more information about the event or to register a team may visit www. tenmillionforchrist.org. Teams must be registered by Friday, Oct. 19.
