Furry friends provide comfort at vaccine clinic

When the Chester County Health Department held a vaccine clinic recently at Owen J. Roberts (OJR) Middle School, Bella the therapy dog was also on hand to provide comfort and ease anxiety for both children and adults.

Bella, 6, a toy poodle, and owner Kim Broach of West Chester, are part of the PAWS for People program, a nonprofit organization that provides therapeutic visits to people who would benefit from interacting with a loving pet. The Delaware-based group was founded in 2005 by former teacher Lynne Robinson.

At OJR Middle School, PAWS for People volunteers were asked to visit with people as they waited in line for their vaccine as well as to comfort people afterwards. Since Broach is an advanced practice nurse, she is familiar with the vaccination process. “(We were asked) if someone could be there when people come in and greet them, and if there is a long line, it would give people something to talk about,” Broach said. “The pet is there if a child is upset or if someone needs support, or they can be there after the shot to help stop (children) from crying.”

“As a nurse, you have compassion. It takes compassion to do this as well,” she added. “Lynne, the founder, is an amazing woman.”

For people receiving a COVID vaccination or a flu shot who have a fear of needles, Bella’s presence in the gymnasium at OJR Middle School, along with the presence of other pets from PAWS for People, was a blessing during the clinic on Oct. 24. “It got so busy … and there were kids on their parents’ laps crying

and crying,” said Broach. “After I asked the nurse, I would go up (to the child receiving a vaccine) and I had Bella face away - nowhere near the arm,” said Broach. “If the shot was in the left arm, Bella would be on the right and I would talk about trick-or-treating and Halloween, and it made it easier. The parents were so grateful.”

Broach pointed out that Bella has been a therapy dog since 2021. “Bella went through private training. She did three levels of training and then you go to Good Citizenship training, and she completed that,” said Broach. “(Training makes sure)

that (the pets) are safe around people. (Instructors) make loud noises and see how (the pets) react, make sure they are following commands, and they learn how to put their paws on someone’s lap if they are larger dogs.”

PAWS for People volunteers choose their assignments based on email messages sent out by the organization. “There are emails saying, ‘Here are our needs for the month of October.’

We go to Delaware, New Jersey and Pennsylvania,” she said. “I scroll down to Pennsylvania and see which ones fit with my

Event will combine art, food and fellowship

The Empty Bowls project was founded as part of an effort to raise awareness about hunger and as a reminder that “someone’s bowl is always empty.”

At Empty Bowl events held worldwide, local artists create and donate handmade ceramic bowls, after which community

members gather for a soup dinner and select a bowl to keep.

Locally, the eighth annual Empty Bowls event will be hosted by the Rotary Club of Twin Valley on Friday, Nov. 8, from 4:30 to 7 p.m. at Conestoga Mennonite Church, 2779 Main St., Morgantown. All proceeds will go to the Twin Valley Food Pantry (TVFP), which is housed

5K Walk/Run for Life to benefit CCCC

Chester County Connect Care (CCCC), a nonprofit medical care pregnancy center, will present its annual 5K Run/Walk For Life on Saturday, Nov. 9, rain or shine, at Hibernia County Park in Coatesville. In addition to running and walking activities, this year’s event will include a fun run/walk, a Pup Station for dogs and a new element this year, a Diaper Derby for toddlers. By including the special activities, organizers are hoping to

attract local families. “We are super excited about the 5K this year and really are looking forward to an incredible event,” said Stacey McNutt, CCCC events coordinator. “With the addition of the Diaper Derby and some kid-friendly fun, we (hope) many families will continue to come out and enjoy a nice morning with us.” Race-day registration will open at 8 a.m., and the 5K will begin at 9 a.m., followed by the fun run/walk at 9:15 a.m. “The 5K is a paved surface. It has lowgrade inclines and declines and

For a set donation collected at the event, attendees will receive a handmade ceramic bowl and the opportunity to sample a variety of soups. Children under age 10 may receive soup in a plastic bowl at a reduced cost.

“All the bowls are on a table, and you pick out the bowl. That is part of the fun of the event - you get a chance to make your own choice,” said past Rotary Club president Ron Moyer.

The ceramic bowls given out during the event are made through out the year by art students from Twin Valley High School (TVHS), as well as members of the Rotary Club and residents of the Tel Hai Retirement Community in Honey Brook.

The soup will be provided by local restaurants and the kitchen staff at Tel Hai. Rotary Club mem bers are also donating soup. “We will have sweet potato soup, and Tel Hai makes a great pizza soup,” said Moyer, noting that dinner rolls will also be served.

The community is welcome to stop by throughout the evening to enjoy soup. “One of the interesting things about this event is that people don’t leave,” Moyer commented. “They will sit at a table with a group of people they have not known before. There is fellowship that goes on throughout the evening.”

Another highlight for attendees is to view the assortment of ceramic bowls on display that come in various colors and styles. “Each bowl is individual,” said Moyer. “The colors come from the glazes. The glaze may look brown, but it comes out blue after firing. It is glazed once and fired twice.” He noted that the bowls are microwave and dishwasher friendly.

The Twin Valley Rotary Club is a community service club. In addition to the Empty Bowls event, the club sponsors the Student of the Month program at TVHS and awards student scholarships. It also provides financial donations to local nonprofits.

The club meets on the first, third and fifth Wednesdays of the month at 7:30 a.m. at the Windmill Family

Dear Brother or Sister in Christ, In the United States, 40% of Christians do not vote.

If God did not want us to have an active role in His plans, He would not have called us to action repeatedly throughout Scripture. Again and again, from Genesis to Revelation, He calls on His people to act, to stand against evil, and to stand up for the needy and vulnerable (Isaiah 6:8, Matthew 28:18-20, Ephesians 5:11, Proverbs 29:2, Proverbs 31:8-9). If we sit on the sidelines while every good thing our nation stands for is destroyed, we will have violated far more Scripture than the handful of passages that may be misused to justify inaction.

Christians oftentimes ignore getting involved in the voting process for several reasons: (1) they don’t believe their vote counts, (2) they have been misinformed, or (3) they have never done it; therefore, it’s hard to break the ice. We encourage you to pray and ask God to help you break free from these fears. We are all called upon to do the right thing.

Many Christians do not vote because of pressure from their church and community. It is time to fully reverse that habit. We are all called upon to do the right thing. The hard part is finding the courage to stand up, to stand in the gap. Initially, you may be judged for doing so. But standing in the gap for good is the only way to stop this storm.

Here’s what you can do today to save the country:

1. Election Day is Tuesday, November 5th. Call us to find your polling place: 717-403-7041.

2. Talk to everyone about why you are voting and why they should too.

3. Pray for our nation and our nation’s leaders. Please act.

Urban Southern sets holiday open house

Urban Southern, which offers handmade and high-quality leather goods, including bags, totes and wallets, will hold a holiday open house on Saturday, Nov. 16, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Featured during the event will be 10% off storewide as well as giveaways and door prizes. Free leather patch beanies will be given to the first 50 people in the door.

The Divine Grind Coffee trailer will be on hand, as well as the Old Road Pretzel Trailer food truck, which will offer homemade soft pretzels and stuffed pretzels. There will also be a campfire and a free s’mores station.

During the event, the retail store and workshop will be open, both of which are located downstairs in the building. Visitors will be able to watch crafters creating bags and other leather goods as they shop in a one-of-a-kind open-view workshop. Crafters are currently creating some fun holiday-themed leather goods for the upcoming season.

Urban Southern uses only the highestquality full-grain leather, which has never been sanded down or processed, so it retains all of its natural strength and beauty. The leather also develops its own patina over time, becoming softer and more beautiful with use.

Step into their one-of-a-kind open-view workshop and watch their production assistants create leather handbags, wallets & accessories, then visit the second floor boutique to shop unique handmade items. Featuring a wide selection of leather goods, candles, jewelry, home decor, kitchenware, and more.

Urban Southern is located in an antique barn that was built in 1910 as a tobacco warehouse, which lends to the building’s charm and character.

Urban Southern is located at 2058 Main St., Narvon. Hours of operation are Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Fridays from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.; and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

goes through trees and the campground,” McNutt said. “It is on road and gravel, not on grass. (Runners and walkers) will begin at Pavilion 5, run through the campgrounds and come back and end where they started.”

First-, second- and third-place medals awarded will be to the top three male and female finishers for each age group and the overall male and female winners of the 5K.

Youngsters in strollers along with dogs on leashes are welcome to be a part of the fun run/walk, which will be less than 1 mile. “We will have a Pup Station, and everyone who registered their dog will get a bandana for their pet. We will have treats for the dogs and water,” said McNutt. All children age 12 and under in the fun run/walk will get a participation medal.

“We will also have a hot cocoa and coffee bar, doughnuts, soft pretzels, chips and other refreshments for all to enjoy, including our race tent for all our participants to enjoy some

healthy snacks before and after the race,” McNutt added, noting all snacks will be provided free of charge.

Following the awards ceremony at 10:15 a.m., the Diaper Derby will begin at 10:30 a.m. The race is open to toddlers, who will be asked to crawl - not walk - along a cushioned race course.

“The rule that applies is that it’s just for crawlers,” McNutt said. “They will crawl along 10 yards of foam squares.”

Prizes will be awarded to the first-, second- and third-place finishers of the race during a ceremony at 11 a.m. All toddlers will receive a CCCC onesie and headband to wear during the race.

There will be separate registration fees for the 5K, the fun run/walk and the Diaper Derby. All participants in the 5K and fun run/walk will be given a T-shirt.

Church groups and others are being invited to take part in a FUN-Raiser by registering for the 5K as a team.

“Our top team fundraiser will be

announced as well as individual top fundraiser. There is still time to join the FUN-Raiser,” McNutt pointed out. “We close that on Nov. 16, so they have an additional week to raise funds and win prizes.”

McNutt noted that more than 300 people took part in last year’s event, which is being held at Hibernia for the third time. “People are walking for the mission and the cause,” said McNutt, noting, “Myriam (Ruager, CCCC executive director), will push an empty stroller with balloons to honor the number of babies that have been lost.”

Ruager will also talk about CCCC’s mission and where the funds are going. Proceeds from the event will support the agency’s ongoing mission to provide medical, educational and material support to women and families facing unplanned pregnancies. All services are 100% free. Families are supported physically, emotionally and financially through basic pregnancy care, parenting education, peer counseling, a homeless

prevention program and community referrals.

McNutt announced that the agency has recently purchased a home to further assist women in need. “We now offer a residential housing program,” she said. “We have a brand-new house, and we just finished furnishing it. It’s a private address in Coatesville, and it can house five women that are in need whether they are pregnant, have babies or multiples. We have enough space for five moms, but they must be clients of our program. We have this option so they can learn the life skills needed so they have a future out there. We want these moms to know there is potential for them.”

McNutt added that non-runners and walkers may also attend the event on Nov. 9 with their families. Also featured during the day will be a petting zoo, face painting and balloon animals. “It’s not just the run; we are adding things,” said McNutt. “We want people to come out, hear about the mission and learn why we do this every year and come out and enjoy a couple hours with the family and the kids.”

She added that attendees are asked to bring donations of diapers sizes 4, 5 and 6.
