he 32nd annual running of the 5K Turkey Bowl at Tel Hai Camp and Retreat in Honey Brook will take place on Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, Nov. 23. Also featured will be a 1-mile children’s fun run. This year’s event will begin with registration and race packet pickup from 7:45 to 9:20 a.m. The fun run will begin at 9:10 a.m. The 5K race will follow at 9:40 a.m. This year, fully automated registration will be offered. “We continue to offer online registration, which can be accessed from the Turkey Bowl page of our website,” explained Bruce Gregory, camp director. “Online registration will be open until the end of check-in on race day. Participants may register online before they arrive or when they arrive using their cellphones.” Mail-in registration forms are also available on the event website. The 5K will take participants on a course through the camp and around the lake along paved, gravel and grassy paths. Chip timing for the 5K will be provided by Second Wind Race Timing. The 1-mile children’s fun run for youths age 12 and under will stay on the main grounds of the camp. Adults who would like to run with their children can participate at no charge. First-place trophies will be awarded to the overall female and male runners of the 5K, and medals will be given to the top three finishers in various age groups. Children who complete the fun run will receive a finisher’s medal. “Last year, we had 352 finishers in the 5K face and 77 finishers in the 1-mile children’s fun run,” Gregory reported. The Unruh family of Morgantown, including Kristy and Austin and their sons, Hudson and Marshall, have been participating in the event annually. Last year, Kristy enjoyed See Turkey Bowl pg 4

For residents of the Twin Valley area and the Coventries, the second Saturday in November is informally known as “Bazaar Saturday.” On that day, shoppers can find holiday gifts and décor, enjoy homemade foods and search for attic treasures at holiday bazaars offered at local churches. On Saturday, Nov. 11, four church bazaars can be found right along the Route 23 corridor
at St. Peter United Church of Christ (UCC), Brownback’s UCC, Bethel United Methodist Church (UMC) and Moving Communities to Christ (MCC). “We do find that people hit them all that day; that’s why we like to keep it the same date as the others,” said Marcia Bittner, one of the event organizers of the Christmas bazaar at St. Peter UCC. “I find that each bazaar offers something a little different.” The Christmas bazaar at St. Peter UCC, 1920 Ridge Road (Route 23), See Bazaars pg 2

Cooling & Electrical will cover the cost of senior pet adoption fees, according to Maggie McDevitt, Humane Pennsylvania media specialist. She encourages prospective pet owners to complete an adoption form at www.HumanePA.org before visiting the shelter. “If people go on the website and see the pet they are interested in, we have adoption interest forms on the Adoption Process tab,” she explained. “That specifically asks what pet you are interested in. It is a prescreening, so it speeds up the process and helps expedite you though the adoption.” In other cases, people can visit the shelter to choose a pet and complete the application process onsite. “There is a chance you can take the pet home on the same day depending on the temperament of the (animal) and their circumstances and if they had their vaccines and their (spaying or neutering) surgery,” McDevitt noted. Currently available at Freedom Center is Beatrice, a 10-year-old spayed female domestic shorthair cat. Beatrice was brought to the shelter because she did not get along with the other cat in the

home and was overwhelmed by the household’s young children. Beatrice would do best in a home with older children and where she is the only pet because she likes to be the center of attention. Her favorite activities include playful batting and sleeping in a sunny spot on a blanket. Also available at the Berks County shelter is Baby, a 10-year-old neutered male Shih Tzu poodle mix whose previous owner could no longer care for him. Although he is a senior dog, Baby still has puppy energy and is good with children and other dogs. He previously lived with three other small dogs and children ages 1 to 7. Those who adopt a pet from Humane Pennsylvania will receive a 30-day supply of an Adoption Health Supplement and a free onepound bag of Science Diet pet food. All pets are spayed or neutered prior to adoption, and they receive their vaccinations, including the rabies vaccine, as well as deworming medication and flea treatment. Adoption also includes microchipping and chip registration, which allows pets to be identified and returned to their owners if they get lost. Kristy pointed out that she has been attending the Turkey Bowl since 2007, when she was a teenager. Now, her sons look forward to the event. “The boys like to see the participants (who) dress up like turkeys and Pilgrims,” she noted. “We have seen every form of weather but there are always good sports that are ready to run, even with costumes.” Other regular participants include Caleb Smoker of Elverson, who competed in the 5K last year with his son Caiden, 7. His 6-year-old twins take part in the fun run. “We have a long history at Tel Hai,” said Caleb. “My older sister was a camp cook when she was in high school.” Caleb said that he enjoys the event because it is something the family can do together. “Anytime you can go spend some time with your kids and celebrate the gift of running ... it is a good thing to do,” he said, adding that the competition can teach youngsters about perseverance and goal setting.
