St. Mark’s, local groups to offer Trunk or Treat events

Instead of children going door to door to collect candy on Halloween, a safe alternative is a Trunk or Treat. During these events, children in costume are able to travel from vehicle to vehicle in a parking lot to collect candy and other treats from car and truck owners who decorate their trunks in various themes.

Locally, St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, 5 Brooke Manor, Birdsboro, will hold its annual Trunk or Treat on Saturday, Oct. 26, from 4 to 6 p.m. The event will also include a Blessing of the Animals by pastor Jim Farnsworth. Both children and

pets are encouraged to attend dressed in costume.

In addition to collecting candy, all in attendance will be served free hot dogs, drinks and snacks.

Children under age 12 must be accompanied by an adult.

Among those who will have a decorated trunk on Oct. 26 will be church member Sally Sassaman, event coordinator.

In addition to handing out candy, she will offer an activity similar to an Easter egg hunt using small pumpkins instead. “They come to my trunk, and in the yard behind me, we hide little pumpkins for the kids to pick up. If they get a specially marked pumpkin, they get a

little prize,” she explained.

Sassaman noted that about 250 people attended last year’s Trunk or Treat event at St. Mark’s, and she encourages local residents to decorate their vehicles for the event. “I like to have at least 15 trunks; more trunks are welcome,” she said, adding, “A lot of people do little games (at) their trunks. The pastor will do the pet blessing at his trunk.”

Sassaman noted that not only is a Trunk or Treat intended to be safer for children, but it also allows people who live in rural areas to participate in giving out candy. “I don’t get kids (because of where I live), and I love Halloween,” she said.

Daniel Boone Homestead sets History Hike, birthday party

Daniel Boone Homestead, the birthplace of the American pioneer and frontiersman, will be the site of two special events, including a History Hike and a celebration of Boone’s 290th birthday.

The History Hike will take place on Saturday, Oct. 26, beginning at 9 a.m. The hike will be approximately 1.5 miles, and it will be held rain or shine.

“A staff member will walk visitors around through the historical area and talk about some of the historical buildings. There is no fee to attend,” said Amanda Machik, the homestead’s manager of site events and programs. “It typically takes about an hour.”

She noted that the hike is an ideal way for visitors who have never been to the site before to learn about its history.

Attendees are asked to wear

During a previous Trunk or Treat at St. Mark’s, members of Daniel Boone Cub Scout Pack 595 re-created a pirate ship.
As in previous years, St. Mark’s pastor Jim Farnsworth will bless pets in attendance at the Trunk or Treat.

sturdy walking shoes and bring water. Friendly dogs are welcome to join on the hike and must be kept on a leash at all times.

The Daniel Boone Homestead birthday celebration will take place on Sunday, Nov. 3, from noon to 4 p.m. The event will include a birthday party with Colonial toys and games, crafts and birthday cake. Daniel Boone House tours will also be offered throughout the afternoon. Visitors can stroll through the historic area to view the other historic buildings, including the blacksmith shop, homestead barn and smokehouse.

A highlight of the day will be an appearance by Boone biographer Robert Morgan at 2 p.m. Morgan’s book “Boone: A Biography” was published in 2007 and became a national bestseller, winner of the 2007 Kentucky Literary Award for nonfiction and finalist for the Los Angeles Times Book Prize for Biography.

“With it being the 290th birthday, we really wanted to find someone who could join us to make this a real celebration,” said Machik. “(Morgan) was here (at the homestead) back when he researched the book (in the early 2000s). He hasn’t been back since.”

Morgan taught writing and literature at Cornell University

for 51 years, retiring in 2022 as Kappa Alpha Professor of English Emeritus. He is the author of 15 books of poetry, nine volumes of fiction and three nonfiction books. He has taught courses in American literature, modern poetry and autobiography, as well as poetry and fiction writing.

“His biography is very readable,” Machik commented. “He’s a storyteller. He first published a collection of short stories, and he has done a lot of poetry. He approaches it from a different perspective than a traditional historian. It’s a good read. It’s nonfiction, but it reads like a story or narrative.”

Morgan grew up in the mountains of North Carolina, where he enjoyed outdoor activities like hunting, fishing and hiking. He learned about Daniel Boone from his father and through local folklore. “He grew up in the Blue Ridge Mountains, though he always had an interest in the wilderness and the frontier,” Machik noted.

In his book, Morgan wrote, “Many boys, both old and young, feel a connection with Boone, but growing up in the mountains of western North Carolina in the 1940 and 1950s … I may have felt the kinship more literally than most.”

Following the presentation, Morgan will conduct a book

signing in the visitor center. A limited number of books will be available for purchase in the museum shop.

Both events are being sponsored and presented by the Daniel Boone Homestead Associates (DBHA). There will be an admission fee for the birthday celebration, with separate prices for adults, seniors age 65 and over and youths ages 6 to 17. Children under age 6 and DBHA members will be admitted for free.

The Daniel Boone Homestead, 400 Daniel Boone Road, Birdsboro, is located halfway between Reading and Pottstown, 1 mile north of Route 422 near Baumstown. The homestead is owned by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission, and daily historic operations are run by the DBHA, a local nonprofit organization.

with a plaque of appreciation “in recognition of his extraordinary vision and enduring commitment.”

Also in attendance were Donna Kueny, program manager; Jeannine Lisitski, president and CEO, Mental Health Partnerships (MHP); and Marian Moskowitz, Chester County commissioner, who presented Compeer with a citation.

Sherry Thompsen, Compeer program coordinator, presented a talk titled “Mental Wellness Starts With Friendship: Celebrating a Quarter Century.”

In her talk she credited Chisholm, the agencies that support Compeer and the agency’s advisory council, as well as the volunteer friends.

“For 25 years, our purpose has been to support mental wellness in our community through friendship. And we continue to achieve that purpose,” she stated. “So far, over the past 25 years, we’ve served over 350 Chester County residents living with mental health chal -

lenges. And we couldn’t have done it without the many volunteers who have helped Compeer achieve its purpose.”

Compeer pairs that were in attendance were recognized and given an opportunity to speak about how they benefit from the program.

The goal of the “nonclinical social engagement program” is to foster mental well-being through social interaction. Having a “compeer,” which means “peer” or “companion,” is designed to help build self-esteem and reduce loneliness in a person dealing with mental health challenges.

According to a history of the program, Chisholm founded Compeer Chester County in 1999 after previously starting a Compeer program that served Montgomery and Delaware counties. He utilized a program model that was created by Compeer International. Since its inception, Compeer

Chester County has been funded by the Chester County Department of Mental Health/Intellectual & Developmental Disabilities (MH/IDD) and operated under the auspices of MHP, along with private donations and grants.

Jeannine Lisitski (at podium), president and CEO of Mental Health Partnerships, welcomed those in attendance.

By January of 2000, Compeer matched 25 adults with volunteer friends from the community. Beginning in 2005, Chisholm was assisted by Thompsen, who started as a volunteer and then was named outreach consultant. Her role expanded over time and, in 2013 she became an official part-time MHP staff member.

Chisholm retired in 2014, and between 2015 and 2018, Bill Kaiser and Don Altemus each served as program managers at different times. Kueny was named program manager in December 2018 after serving as division director for MHP. Compeer is always in need of

volunteers, who are paired with individuals of the same gender and geographical area who share common interests. Pairs share activities such as attending a sporting event or a movie or going for coffee or lunch. Individuals in the program have been diagnosed with conditions such as depression, social anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder, and they are referred to the program by a mental health professional.

For more information about volunteer opportunities, contact Kueny at 610-436-4445 or dkueny@mhphope.org. More information is also available at www.compeerchesco.org.

If God did not want us to have an active role in His plans, He would not have called us to action repeatedly throughout Scripture. Again and again, from Genesis to Revelation, He calls on His people to act, to stand against evil, and to stand up for the needy and vulnerable (Isaiah 6:8, Matthew 28:18-20, Ephesians 5:11, Proverbs 29:2, Proverbs 31:8-9). If we sit on the sidelines while every good thing our nation stands for is destroyed, we will have violated far more Scripture than the handful of passages that may be misused to justify inaction.

Christians oftentimes ignore getting involved in the voting process for several reasons: (1) they don’t believe their vote counts, (2) they have been misinformed, or (3) they have never done it; therefore, it’s hard to break the ice. We encourage you to pray and ask God to help you break free from these fears. We are all called upon to do the right thing.

Many Christians do not vote because of pressure from their church and community. It is time to fully reverse that habit. We are all called upon to do the right thing. The hard part is finding the courage to stand up, to stand in the gap. Initially, you may be judged for doing so. But standing in the gap for good is the only way to stop this storm.

Here’s what you can do today to save the country:

1. You can vote early by mail, or in-person. Call us and we’ll help you better understand the options Pennsylvania offers: 717-403-7041.

2. Talk to everyone about why you are voting and why they should too.

3. Pray for our nation and our nation’s leaders. Please act. You don’t want to wake-up the day after the 2024 election wishing you had done more to save your community and your country.

Sincerely,

Wayne County, Ohio
