Community Invited To View Christmas Light Display BY FRANCINE FULTON

ocal residents are invited to take a short drive to Sinking Spring to enjoy Lights on Elwyn, a free holiday display featured at the home of Ron and Kerin DeCarlo. The display will open on Sunday, Nov. 29, and run through Thursday, Dec. 31, from 6 to 9 p.m. Those who visit the Christmas light show, which will feature approximately 30,000 Christmas

lights, a walk-through Candy Cane Lane, an 11-foot Ferris wheel and animated characters, are asked to bring donations of dog and cat food, treats and kitty litter. Donations can be dropped off in a bin provided on-site. Pet items, as well as financial contributions, will be donated to the Animal Rescue League (ARL) of Berks County, Birdsboro. “People can drive by and see it, but we want them to get out. There

is plenty of street parking, Ron explained. “Our setup is like a Christmas village. We have a display in the back. It’s not a threeminute thing; you can take 10 to 15 minutes to see everything. New this year is a hand-built sleigh, where visitors can take photos. “This year - brand new - we have an actual sled that we built so people can come and take pictures of it with their animals and kids or themselves for their Christmas

cards, Ron said. “They can actually sit in the sled. Ron begins creating the Christmas display in early November with the help of his friend Tim Gaston. “You will see the time and effort that goes into this. A lot of the wooden figures are handmade, Ron noted. “It will be worth (the drive). The DeCarlos have been decorating their home for more than 30 years but decided to add the charity

Then, we put in online voting.” Schaffer noted that the HBCP decided to go on with the event despite the

BY FRANCINE FULTON

St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Honey Brook has installed a Little Free Food Pantry box that offers free food and personal care items to people in need.

afĂŠ C 4HANKSGIVING

The box at St. Mark’s will be filled by the congregation, but community members are welcome to donate items as well. Donations of canned food, toiletries, deodorant and personal care items are welcome. However, there are some limitations about what can be placed in the box. Items that will not be accepted include fresh food, frozen food, homemade food and repackaged food. The box is limited to food only, so no clothing, bedding or shoes will be accepted. “People should not put glass jars in the box that can freeze and break, Lutz added. Lutz said his goal is to have at least two other boxes installed in the area, including one in Morgantown and another in the Honey Brook community. St. Mark’s is located at 1040 Chestnut Tree Road, Honey Brook. For more information, readers may visit www.stmarkshb.org or www.facebook.com/stmarkshb.

Program Launched

Gary and Mary Stoltzfus of Elverson and George and Kathy Milligan of Birdsboro have announced the engagement of Julie Stoltzfus of Elverson to Sean Milligan of Birdsboro. The bride-elect graduated from Twin Valley High School in 2016 and West Chester University in 2020. Mr. Milligan graduated from Twin Valley High School in 2016 and West Chester University in 2020. He attends Washington University.

Prevent Blindness, a volunteer eye health organization, recently launched a new awareness campaign designed to help reduce the effects of digital eye strain. With many people spending more time viewing digital screens during the pandemic, the new “Screen Time-Out program is a series of social media graphics reminding consumers to give their eyes a break. Staring at screens for long periods of time can cause eye strain. Prevent Blindness encourages people to take a screen timeout every 20 minutes and give their eyes a break. Graphics for the campaign will run on Facebook, Instagram, and Pinterest. A new webpage has also been created to provide consumers with information on digital eye strain, blue light, and more related to helping to protect one’s vision at http://prevent blindness.org/screen-time-out.

“I had the idea before, but when coronavirus came, for me, it became more of a priority, Lutz stated. “People have to eat, and especially (during the pandemic I find that) I am spending (much more) on groceries. There are people out there who are hurting right now - people right in our own backyards. The newly installed box in Honey Brook will eventually be listed in a directory by It Takes a Village, a nonprofit organization based in Coatesville that has installed and maintains several food boxes in that area. The boxes, including the one in Honey Brook, include a sticker from the organization, which reads, “Take only what you need, leave behind what you can, be the village for your neighbor, share the love with all humans.

Christmas Light Display from pg 1 component about 10 years ago. One year, visitors were asked to donate to Toys for Tots. “A few years ago we decided to do something for the animals,” Ron said, noting that the couple has adopted pets from the ARL. “Last year, we collected $1,380 and lots of food and other supplies for (the ARL).” All money raised during the course of the season will be donated directly to the ARL. “We have a locked cash donation box that is emptied nightly,” Ron pointed out. “One hundred percent of the money goes to the ARL - we take not a cent from it.” Ron said that masks are recommended, but not required. “(Visitors are) sporadic and they are not going to be close together. There is a lot of room to walk,” he said, adding, “Weather conditions are a factor. If it is really pouring, we don’t put it on, (but) snow would be nice.” Lights on Elwyn is located at 216 Elwyn Ave., Sinking Spring. For more information and directions, readers may search for “Lights on Elwyn” on Facebook. In the event of inclement weather, information about the display will be posted on Facebook. More information about the ARL is available at www.facebook.com/berks ARL and www.berksarl.org.

Windsor Christian Academy (WCA) in Uwchlan won the Atlantic Coast Christian Athletic Conference (ACCAC) middle school boys’ soccer championship on Oct. 24. Defeating Upper Bucks Christian with a score of 6-1, Windsor dominated the game from the beginning by scoring first. The team was coached by Josiah Colegrove. The boys’ soccer team finished regular season play 7-1 and then entered the playoff season by beating Coventry Christian and Calvary Baptist to qualify for the championship game. WCA noted that its team consisted of only 13 players compared to 26 on the Upper Bucks Christian team. This season was the inaugural season of WCA’s soccer program.

Melody Karick, the program director for Meadow View, Garden Spot Village’s (GSV) new memory support facility located on South Kinzer Avenue in New Holland, sees the new 40,000-square-foot building, which includes two mirror-image sections named Amber and Pearl, as a mini version of GSV. “People live here as a community,” said Karick, gesturing to the Town Square area of the building, which includes a general store, cosmetology shop, bistro, and chapel. “They visit each other.” Karick noted that only the front door and the gates to the five outdoor courtyards are locked. Within the walls, residents may move about freely. The design is focused on allowing those with dementia to continue to live with normalcy. “Dementia is not a disease that needs to take normalcy (from patients),” Karick said. “It’s not the end of life. We just need to help them learn to live a new life with new purpose.” A training room located off Town Square will serve as a meeting place for clubs led by residents. Pointing out the donated items in the general store, Karick noted, “Shopping is a normal part of life.” She added that donated items in the store may be chosen by residents at no charge. To help residents become familiar with their surroundings, the building has been designed with cues they can follow. “There are two gray doors with no trim,” pointed out Karick. “Those doors are for team members.” A door between the two gray doors has trim and color because it is a restroom for all to use. In a neighborhood including five resident apartments, each door is a different color and has a different number of panels and a different door handle. Each also has a mailbox with the resident’s name.”We are giving several cues to what is their household and room,” explained Karick. Resident comfort and safety were paramount in the plan for the building and the care of its occupants. “When a resident gets out of bed, sensors will automatically turn on the bathroom light,” said Karick, who noted that when a resident returns to bed, the lights will dim and go off. Wristbands worn by residents will notify care team members

when a resident who normally needs assistance is out of bed. “If a patient falls, the band will alert the team member to the fall and the location,” said Karick, who added that a dashboard system allows team members to locate a patient and make sure he or she is safe. Smoke-safe areas located within the building can keep residents and staff safe should a fire occur. To help married couples remain together, Meadow View offers a few special independent living apartments attached to a resident’s room. “Everything in the apartment is dementia friendly,” said Karick, who explained a twostep process for using the stove or fireplace. The outside entrance must be activated with a code or key swipe to protect the spouse with

dementia from wandering off. Should the independent spouse need to be away, the door to the apartment can be locked while the patient continues to be cared for by the Meadow View team. According to Karick, the creation of Meadow View, which welcomed residents in midSeptember, was based on rec-

ognizing the need for memory support services. GSV leaders Steve Lindsey and Scott Miller invited her to bring her memory care team into the process of developing the new facility. “It was a great team effort,” Karick said. Readers who wish to learn more about Meadow View may call 717-355-6000.

Cutting the ribbon at the opening of Meadow View at Garden Spot Village are (from left) Gordon Denlinger, Vernon Feather, Mary Jo Medura, Don Aldrich, EJ Rittersbach, Melody Karick, Steve Lindsey, Rep. David Zimmerman, Joyce Gerhart, and Stevyn Conway.
