Celebrate Christmas In Birdsboro BY FRANCINE FULTON

Christmas in Birdsboro, offering a full day of fun and activities for people of all ages, will return this year on Saturday, Dec. 11, after a modified version was held in 2020 because of the pandemic. The day will begin with the Santa Run 5K and Fun Run at 9 a.m. at Rustic Park, 1314 Haycreek Road,

Birdsboro. The first-time event will take 5K runners through a trail in the park and along Route 82. The fun run will be a 1-mile run/walk in the park. All participants may enjoy hot cocoa provided by the Cherry on Top dessert truck. A link to register for the event is available by searching for the event page, “Santa Run 5K/Fun Run,” on Facebook. Bob Stevens (left) and Bruce McCleary are excited for the public to view Tel Hai Train Club’s model train layout.

Tel Hai Train Club To Host Holiday Open House “Every section tells a story,” said Bob Stevens, a member of the Train Club at Tel Hai Retirement Community, when describing the train layout created by the club that will be open to the public for the first time as part of a Holiday Open House. The public is welcome to view the train layout free of charge from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturdays, Dec. 11 and 18, and Thursday, Dec. 30. The layout features many miniature communities, including a fishing village complete with boats on the water, an Amish farm and an oil refinery that includes stacks made from Pringles potato chip cans and pipes made of drinking straws. The display, which is located in the StoneCroft Commons on the

Tel Hai campus, features HO-, S- and O-gauge railroad cars, as well as a large G-gauge train that runs along the perimeter of the room. The train room is located inside an apartment building that opened in January 2018. Since that time, club members have transformed the once-empty room into an impressive train display that was built one section at time. “Almost all of the trains and a lot of the buildings were donated to us by the public or people moving in here, people who are train enthusiasts. (One donor) had a 60-foot-by-30-foot display in his basement and he gave a lot of it to us,” explained train club member Bruce McCleary. “I built the platform first, and several people got together to lay out where we wanted the track.”

McCleary keeps a scrapbook of how the train layout developed. “We started on the ground level, but we added an elevated level,” said McCleary, who is a retired engineer. “People gave me ideas, and I built them.” “There is a lot to look at,” said Stevens, pointing out the layout’s Christmas village, a fire scene complete with a burning building and firefighters and the Tel Hai car show, where vintage model cars are featured. “Every light in every building is hand-wired.” The Train Club meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays to work on the layout. “It (requires) continuous maintenance. Everything you see here is 60 or 70 years old because it has been donated,” said Stevens. “The track gets dirty and (we clean) every bit of track. For the engines, we have

The show was canceled last year because of the pandemic, and this year’s event has been slightly modified. “The craft show will feature 19 vendors so they can spread out and be socially distant,” explained church member Gwynne Sweatlock, one of the event organizers. In lieu of an assortment of food and beverages, homemade chicken corn chowder will be sold by the quart. Crafts for sale will include handmade cork tote bags, purses and wallets; handmade jewelry; chocolates; dog collars; wood-turned items; stained glass; soaps; and Swedish weaving done on hand towels. Each vendor will donate one item for a silent auction, and the crafts will be put into gift baskets that will be up for bids. The centerpiece of the event will be the display of trains, including one set up by the Rev. Bill Wisneski, pastor. “He brings in this really old train set with smoke coming out of the engine,” said Sweatlock. In 2019, a congregation member brought in a train display featuring buildings,

There is also a train display that was created by Wisneski and the church’s Right Track Bible Study and Model Railroad Club. “There are different types and sizes (of trains). It looks lovely,” Sweatlock said. All are invited to watch “The Polar Express,” which will be shown continuously throughout the day in the old fellowship hall. Turkey Bowl Has A Successful Run On Thanksgiving Morning BY FRANCINE FULTON

More than 400 participants turned out for this year’s Turkey Bowl, held on Thanksgiving morning at Tel Hai Camp and Retreat in Honey Brook. This year’s runners and walkers were able to enjoy ideal weather conditions while competing in the Turkey Bowl, which included a 5K race, as well as a 1-mile fun run for children. “We had a beautiful morning for our Among the participants in the Tel Hai Turkey Bowl were Kat Eversmeyer (left) of Honey Brook and Caleb Kemery of 30th annual Turkey Bowl race. Taylor also won the top spot in 2019. The top overall 5K female winner was Traci Tempone from Leola, with a time of 20:25. Tempone also claimed the top spot in 2018. “We had 316 finishers in the 5K race,” Gregory noted. “We went back to our normal race course this year, so this was the 11th year for this 5K course.” He noted that the youngest registered participant this year was about 3 months old and rode in a stroller, and the oldest was age 80. “In the 1mile kids’ fun run, we had 63 finishers. We had a good mix of ages, including some very young ones under (age) 5 whose parents ran with them,” noted Gregory. “Hopefully, they will enjoy running and continue running with their families.” The Turkey Bowl attracted local residents and those from out of town who were visiting relatives in the area. “This year, we had mostly local runners, but we did still have a few from other states such as Florida, Colorado, Kentucky, Oregon, Arkansas and the Carolinas, as well as New Jersey, Maryland and Virginia,” Gregory

Chester County Launches Teen Talk Line Run Teen Talk Line, targeting 12to 18-year-olds, became available in April to take calls and texts to support young people who are feeling overwhelmed, stressed, sad, isolated or confused. Callers can remain anonymous, and all calls are confidential. In November, the hours expanded, and the line is now open seven days a week from 3 to 7 p.m. “Our volume is predominantly in text,” reported Kerri

“It’s a safe place where people can reach out and share their feelings and be heard and not worry about being judged by the person on the other end,” said Cailey Crusemire, program supervisor, when describing the newly established Chester County Teen Talk Line. “We can talk about anything they want to talk about.”

Hoogenhuis, assistant director. “Occasionally a teen will reach out by phone, but that is rare.” Teen Talk Line staff members would like to see the number of callers increase. “So many don’t know about it, but there is such a need for teen services,” said Crusemire. “Once they do know, it’s also making sure that it’s not a scary place for them to reach out.”

“We just want to let them know that it is a place just to talk - not when you are in crisis,” said Hoogenhuis. “People hesitate to reach out because they think their problem is not big enough. But they can reach out about anything, even to talk about their day.” “A lot of (the calls and texts) seem to be about friend problems, people at school, problems with parents and feeling lonely or isolated,” Crusemire added. “Some of them just want to vent about (feeling) alone. Some people reach out to say hello.” Calls or texts from teens who are in crisis are referred to the Valley Creek Crisis Center, which responds to mental health emergencies 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The Teen Talk Line is contracted through the Chester County Office of Mental Health. The line is staffed by certified peer specialists from Access Services, a nonprofit organization that runs other mental health programs, including a Teen Talk Line in Montgomery County, which also uses teen volunteers to take calls. Hoogenhuis hopes to recruit teen volunteers in Chester County as well. She is also looking for a host school where student volunteers would take calls after school in a designated area. “ We have been contacting the schools, trying to set up appointments and sending out digital flyers,” said Hoogenhuis. “Now that our hours have expanded, we’re hoping to get additional materials - bracelets, clings, stickers and tear pads (that list the Teen Talk Line numbers) - and drop off materials in person and maybe hang up the clings on the bathroom mirrors (at the schools). “If we had one or two schools who we had a partnership with and saw teens reaching out every day, that would be our ultimate goal,” she added. The Chester County Teen Talk Line is available by phone at 855-852-8336 and by text at 484-362-9515. For more information, visit w w w. a c c e s s s e r v i c e s . o r g /teen-talk-line. Schools or teen volunteers interested in participating in the program should contact Hoogenhuis at khoogenhuis @accessservices.org.

pointed out. “ We had a great showing from Honey Brook and surrounding towns as well and many families that have made this a tradition. We had many new runners this year. We thank all who came out to support the race.” Gregory credited the 40 volunteers who made the event a success and the 28 local businesses that sponsored or donated to the race, as well as Second Wind Race Timing. “This year we

chipped both the 5K race and the 1-mile children’s fun run again. I believe the children enjoy starting under the big blue arch,” Gregory said. “Besides our Turkey Mascot, we also had a visit from Santa Claus this year.” A complete list of Turkey Bowl finishers, including their individual times, and a listing of sponsors and donors are available at www.telhaicamp.org/events/ turkey-bowl-run.

The Turkey Mascot, as well as Santa Claus, cheered on the runners and walkers in this year’s Tel Hai Turkey Bowl.

The Rough & Tumble Museum will hold several events in 2022 that are open to the public. BY ANN MEAD ASH

When giving a tour of the Rough & Tumble Museum, 4997 Lincoln Highway East, Kinzers, museum volunteer Kathleen Hazzard points out the buildings that represent the many organizations that make up the group. “That’s the horse-drawn museum. That building is antique cars, and that’s the blacksmith shop,” she notes, but then she pauses to explain how strongly she believes in the message of the organization. “ We are preserving America’s agricultural and industrial history because it’s really important to remember where we came from as we go forward,” Hazzard said. Not only is the Rough & Tumble Museum, which covers 33 acres along Route 30 near Paradise, working to preserve history, but it is also working to correct misinformation about the group itself. “People don’t know we’re open to the public,” explained Hazzard. “We are a membership-based, board of directors-run museum, but everyone is welcome.” Bud Burdy, current Rough & Tumble president, echoed Hazzard. “ We continually learn that no one knows we

exist and that we are open to the public,” said Burdy, who is hoping to bring STEM classes, Scout troops, school groups, and others to the museum. He noted that younger people are welcome to come and learn about the 12 or so diverse groups, which include a machine shop and a large engine group, that fall under the museum’s umbrella. “It’s not just an all-boys’ club,” Burdy pointed out. “ We have more and more ladies involved.” Rough & Tumble traces its roots to the 1940s, when Arthur Young, who owned a tractor business across the road from the museum’s location, organized a reunion, eventually buying the Myer Farm, which became Rough & Tumble. The organization will celebrate its 75th anniversary in 2023. A full slate is planned for 2022. On Saturday, April 23, the Antique and Classic Tractor Pull will be held. No admission will be charged, and gates will open at 8 a.m. “Our pulling committee has made some dramatic positive changes in the last five years,” said Hazzard of the kickoff event. The Spring Steam-Up will be held on Friday and Saturday,

May 13, and 14, with a tractor pull at 6 p.m. on May 13, and demonstrations of plowing with vintage equipment. “People love to come and watch us plow the fields with antique tractors and steam tractors,” said Hazzard. On Friday, June 24, and Saturday, June 25, the International Harvester Club Chapter 9 will hold an event on the museum grounds, and Rough & Tumble will hold a tractor pull the same weekend. During John Deere Days, Friday and Saturday, July 22 and 23, the Waterloo Boys turn the scenery special shades of green and yellow, with a Parade of Power and more. The 74th annual Threshermen’s Reunion will be held Wednesday through Saturday, Aug. 17 to 20. The event features a daily Parade of Power and the Pageant of Threshing. The final event of the year is the Time of Harvest Show on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 7 and 8. the child-focused event includes pumpkin painting, a children’s pedal pull, and a candy drop from a tall crane. Information about the organization may be found by visiting www.roughandtumble.org or calling 717-442-4249.
