No greenery is more recognized during the holiday season than Christmas trees. However, wreaths may be a close second to towering evergreens when it comes to green holiday decor. It is important to treat wreaths with care to maximize their longevity and beauty. The following tips can help consumers choose a wreath and ensure it remains fresh and festive throughout December.

When choosing a wreath design, shoppers should select a wreath that is neither too busy nor too boring. It is important to strike the right balance. A good wreath has a focal point, which may be a festive bow or another decorative piece. Keep in mind this is a wreath that should have lots of greenery on display, rather than flowers that characterize other seasonal wreaths. People should also take a moment to ask a sales representative how heavy the wreath is when they purchase it. Knowing the weight of the wreath will help a person identify the proper hanging mechanism, as hooks are generally classified by the weight they can hold. A less than sturdy hook can increase the chances the wreath falls down and ends up damaged. Once the weight of the
wreath is determined, it is time to figure out how to secure the decoration to a door or window without having to drill holes into any structures. Removable adhesive strips are one option, provided people attach something like cardboard or another material to the back of the wreath upon which the adhesive strips can be attached. Otherwise, over-the-door wreath hangers are wise investments that can support large, heavy wreaths. People are advised to exercise caution if their home has storm doors. If they hang a wreath between a glass storm door and the front door, the air around the wreath will heat up and cause the wreath to turn brown. In addition to avoiding heat that builds up between doors, people should select a cool spot out of the hot
sun. Many pine trees, like balsam fir, react more favorably to cooler temperatures and will keep their vibrant green color and fragrance more readily. When choosing holiday decorations, people should consider the safety of their pets. According to the Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine, most holiday plants cause irritation of the mouth. Additionally, pine trees produce oils that can cause gastrointestinal issues. Anyone who wants to hang a wreath indoors is urged to select an artificial one. Prolonged warm temperatures inside may prematurely dry out a fresh wreath, ultimately turning it into a fire hazard. A few pointers can ensure wreaths remain a beautiful component of holiday decor throughout the season.

Every year, after festivities wind down on Christmas Day, many people experience a feeling of melancholy. Once all the wrapping paper has been ripped off the presents, it’s not uncommon for revelers to catch the post-Christmas blues as they begin to think of the bleak winter months that must be
endured before the next holiday. But most people don’t know that this is a uniquely modern problem - some centuries ago, Christmas Day marked the beginning of the fun. The traditional English Christmas was known as Yuletide, a custom involving 12 days of partying that kicked off on Dec. 25 See Yuletide pg 4

Pennsylvanians looking for a patriotic way to donate during the holiday season are reminded that they can give to programs that support the commonwealth’s more than 700,000 veterans, service members, and their families. These nine tax-deductible programs are managed by the Department of Military and Veterans Affairs (DMVA). The Veterans’ Trust Fund (VTF) issues grants to statewide charitable organizations that assist veterans, veterans service organizations, and county directors of veterans affairs to help veterans in need of shelter and necessities of living. The VTF also issues temporary assistance grants to individual veterans who have qualifying financial needs.

every year. Christmas Day itself was primarily for religious observance. The holiday was followed by large gatherings of friends and family members who shared meals, played games, swapped stories and danced together. Gift giving did not have the same importance as it does in modern times, but rather it involved the exchange of small, sentimental presents on New Year’s Day. After nearly two weeks, Yuletide celebrations usually peaked on Twelfth Night with a large dinner party or a ball. Historic Rock Ford, 881 Rockford Road, Lancaster, offers members of the community a chance to see how Christmas was celebrated in the 18th century with its annual Yuletide Tours. This year, the self-guided tours will take place on Wednesday, Dec. 27, from 4 to 6 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m.; Thursday, Dec. 28, from 4 to 6 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m.; and Friday, Dec. 29, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 4 to 6 p.m. During each tour, guests are invited to explore the halls of Rock Ford’s historic mansion, which belonged to Revolutionary War general Edward Hand. The home will be transformed into a historically accurate re-creation of how it likely appeared when Hand dwelled there. Volunteers who are dressed in

period-accurate clothing will be located throughout the rooms to answer guests’ questions, and meals that were popular in Colonial times will be prepared in the kitchen. In the hallways, performers will showcase traditional waltzes and other dances from the era. Harpsichordists Margaret Marsch and Faith Martin and violinist Mercy Martin will provide live music during each tour. Guests may visit the mansion’s study to hear a recorded monologue of Hand played by an actor. In the recording, Hand reflects on Christmas Day in 1776, when he crossed the Delaware River beside George Washington to turn the tide of the Revolutionary War. Two decades later, Hand ponders the luxuries that were made attainable by the sacrifices of others. The Yuletide Tours are historically informed by Historic Rock Ford’s curator, Sarah Alberico, who has researched old newspapers and archives to learn what was customary in the 18th century. “The Yuletide Tours are an opportunity take a little breath after the frantic holiday,” said Sam Slaymaker, Historic Rock Ford’s director. “Enjoy the sights and sounds of a time that was more reflective and more about being with friends and family.” To purchase tickets for the Yuletide Tours, visit https:// rockford.yapsody.com.

Robert J. Rummel, a recently retired professional pilot, has collaborated with the Lancaster campus of Eastern Mennonite University (EMU) to establish an aviation scholarship for students pursuing a bachelor’s degree in leadership and organizational management (LOM) with an aviation concentration. The scholarship’s purpose is to help aviation students achieve their goals. Rummel’s extensive experience in the aviation industry will provide an opportunity for EMU’s aviation students to receive mentorship and support from someone dedicated to giving back to his profession. Rummel was a corporate pilot before his retirement. He began his flight training at Lancaster Aviation Flight Academy when he was 20 years old in 1970, and by 1972, he had obtained his private, commercial, and flight instructor licenses. Rummel served as a full-time instructor at the academy for three years. In 1975, he began his 44-year corporate flying career, which included piloting turboprops, helicopters, and large corporate jets. For the last 23 years of his career, Rummel flew a Bombardier Global Express for Paramount Pictures and the CBS Corporation, traveling to

One day he attempted to rent a plane from Aero-Tech Services Inc., but he discovered that all of the company’s aircraft were booked weeks in advance. It was then that he learned that Aero-Tech was partnered with EMU for its flight program. When Rummel learned that EMU did not have a scholarship program for its young aviators, he started one. The scholarship is available to students entering their junior year and working toward a commercial pilot certificate. Recently, the scholarship committee named Griffin Snyder as the first recipient of the Robert J. Rummel scholarship. Snyder, from New Holland, will receive $5,000. He has already obtained his private, instrument, and commercial ratings and will use the scholarship to pursue his multi-engine rating and flight instructor certificates. Additionally, they can participate in regional airline cadet and pilot preparation programs.
