Student Creates Yarn Wigs For Young Cancer Patients By Francine Fulton
While students in the Confirmation class at the Church of St. Benedict in Mohnton collected yarn to be donated to the Magic Yarn Project, a nonprofit organization that provides princess yarn wigs and superhero beanies free of charge to children with cancer, student Katy Stoutenger took the project one step further. Katy crocheted 26 beanies and yarn wigs with the help of her great-grandmother Rita Agasar. Katy, a seventh-grade student at Twin Valley Middle School, explained that her great-grandmother taught her to crochet at the age of 8. “I already knew how to do basic crochet (stitches), and I looked at the (tutorial) video to do the specific hat stitches,” Katy explained. “I thought it would be cool to do because it was something the little boys and girls would like.”
According to www.themagicyarn project.com, the beanies and yarn wigs are designed for children undergoing chemotherapy whose scalps are too sensitive for traditional wigs. The crocheted beanies feature various characters and the wigs are designed to replicate the hairstyles of Disney characters. Seventh-grade students in the Parish Religious Education Program (PREP) Class at St. Benedict’s who are preparing to receive the sacrament of Confirmation were encouraged to participate in the service project by Valerie Christo, director of religious education, who showed the class a video about the project. “They (saw) that this mission project is changing kids’ lives and bringing smiles to their faces by giving them a time to play, enjoying their childhood,” she said. Students and parish families were invited to donate various colors of soft yarn during October and See Yarn Wigs pg 6

Lily, 5, is accompanied to the sites by her owner, Liz Alakszay, who is the staff development and advocacy coordinator for the Chester County Library System and a member of the board of the directors at the Dog Training Club of Chester County (DTCCC). “(Lily) is my second therapy/stress relief dog; my last one passed away at 15,” Alakszay explained. As part of an employee wellness program at the county level, Lily visits with employees at the Chester County See Therapy Dog pg 2

Government Services Center and at the 313 West Market Street Building. “During their lunch hour, (employees) visit with (Lily) in the training room. People come in and they don’t want to leave,” Alakszay stated. She noted that Lily also visited with students from West Chester University. “Places like West Chester University and Drexel (University) have office hours for stress relief dogs. During exam week, students secure time to come out,” she explained. Most recently, Lily visited the Chester Springs Library to read with young children as part of the Tail Waggin’ Tutors program. Lily and her owner also visit elementary schools upon request. “(One school had) two students who had bullying issues, and they were afraid to come to school,” Alakszay said. “The kids hung out with the dog for six weeks, and it made a world of difference. It was amazing how these kids turned around and are now able to communicate through interaction with a dog.” She explained that during the sessions, students learned to discuss their fears. “They (discussed) things Lily was
afraid of and how she deals with that, and (then) the kids talked about what they were afraid of,” said Alakszay. “The dog was their role model.” Alakszay explained that Lily is not a service dog but is a certified therapy dog that provides emotional support. “Service dogs are trained and handed over to someone who has a disability,” she said, noting that facilities like Canine Partners for Life train service dogs. “She is trained to hang out with you and help you go through some of life’s bumps. Just by petting a dog, it decreases blood pressure. For kids, it creates a safe environment.” Alakszay said that Lily is certified through Therapy Dogs International. “Therapy Dogs were the folks that provided stress relief dogs after 9/11,” she noted. She said that certification training can take up to three years, noting that Lily has earned her American Kennel Club (AKC) K9 Good Citizenship certificate
and the Good Community Dog certificate. “I’m proud of her. One of the exams that we went through to be certified was a two-hour test,” Alakszay recalled. “She had to walk through crowds and avoid food that they put down. She had to walk past another dog, and they had to ignore each other. Out of 15 dogs, only five passed that day.” Alakszay pointed out that one of Lily’s favorite places to visit is the Barclay Friends senior living facility in West Chester. “Depending on where they are with Alzheimer’s or dementia, (the residents) come to life when they see her. It is very gratifying,” she added. Since she has a full-time job, Alakszay said she tries to visit as many places as possible as her schedule allows. “From now to the end of the year, we have about a dozen requests,” she said. “I love animals and I love helping people, so it’s a really nice mesh.”

The Chester County Opportunities Industrialization Center (OIC) is currently seeking volunteers willing to help individuals from other countries with their English language skills through its adult tutoring program. No experience is necessary, but volunteers must have a minimum of a bachelor’s degree. According to Debbie Rikess, who is the new adult tutoring program coordinator, there is a current waiting list of 22 people located throughout Chester County who are in need of volunteer
she said. Tutors are asked to meet with a student for a minimum of three hours a week for at least one year. “We ask them to meet at public locations,” Rikess explained. “We have a lot of people from Exton, West Chester, Downingtown and Coatesville that like to meet at the Chester County Library in Exton. “It’s a great location for people to meet.” She said that most student/tutor pairs meet twice a week for an hour and a half each time. In the past, tutors were required to attend a training workshop held at the library in Exton. Now, the program offers online training for tutors. “We recently switched to online training

Youths with special needs are invited to enjoy dance parties that will be held at Grove United Methodist Church, 490 W. Boot Road, West Chester. Dances will be held several times each month beginning on Saturday, Jan. 5, 2019, from 10 to 11 a.m. The dance parties, themed “Everybody In,” are being presented by Lizzy Stahelek, who is organizing the event as part of a service project in conjunction with pursuing the Girl Scout Silver Award, the highest award in Cadette Girl Scouting. Lizzy, 13, is a seventhgrade student at Peirce Middle School and a member of Girl Scout Troop 4297, which meets at the school. “It will be a relaxed event that all people with special needs can attend and enjoy. Kids with special needs can dance their own way and enjoy the music in their own way,” Lizzy said. “The kids will not have to follow dance steps; it will be a dance party.” Lizzy’s 9-year-old sister, Ally, who has special needs, was the inspiration for the project. “My sister likes a lot of music,” Lizzy said, noting that the family had previously attended a dance class for special needs students. “It was mainly (learning) a routine, and some of the steps were harder to follow. (For these dances), we wanted people to just have a party.” The girls’ mother, Margaret Stahelek, explained, “There wasn’t a place for someone like our daughter, so Lizzy wanted to create something where everyone can participate. I think it will be really fun.” Lizzy began planning for the dance parties this past summer, which included scouting for a handicapped-accessible location. After the opening event on Jan. 5, upcoming dances will be held on Jan. 19; Feb. 2 and 16; March 2, 16 and 30; and April 6 and 20, 2019. It is not necessary to register for the events, and participants can attend as many dance parties as they choose. All attendees must be accompanied by a parent or adult guardian who must stay with them during the hour-long session. Siblings are welcome. No snacks will be provided, so dancers are encouraged to bring bottled water or other beverages. Lizzy has prepared a playlist with dances such as the hokey pokey. “We have to tailor it to who is there, and we have multiple
playlists,” said Lizzy, noting that there will also be some surprises. “Once (the dance parties) start, we will make changes as necessary,” Margaret added. “We want the kids to feel part of a group and have them go to an event that they enjoy.” Lizzy noted that the dance parties are modeled after High 5 Soccer, which Ally participates in. High 5 is a program offered each spring and fall by the Glenmoore Eagle Youth Association (GEYA). The program, run by coaches Jenn and Matt Wagner, offers children with special needs one hour of soccer each weekend, during which players pair up with a teenager or adult buddy for activities and games that are adapted to their abilities. “The dance will not have assigned buddies like High 5, but there will be volunteers dancing with them,” said Lizzy. During High 5 Soccer while the children are on the field, parents frequently network and talk about their children’s needs and discuss programs that are offered in the area. At the dance parties, the goal is to foster a similar support system. “If parents do want to dance, they can, but they don’t necessarily have to, and hopefully they will talk to the other parents like they do at High 5,” Margaret said. Upon completion of the project, Lizzy will present a report about the dance parties to the Girl Scouts of Eastern Pennsylvania for final approval before receiving the Silver Award. For more information about the dance parties, readers may email lizzy.stahelek @gmail.com. More information about High 5 Soccer is available at www.geyasoccer.org and www.facebook.com/GEYASoccer.

November. Katy made the wigs and beanies with the help of Agasar, 87, and Agasar’s friend Kay Letton, 90. “We worked on them nonstop,” Katy recalled. “They take pretty long to do. Adding the ‘hair’ (made of yarn) was the hardest part because you have to add the strands individually.” Katy explained that the hats follow the same pattern but are customized for boys and girls. “The hats were the same, but the decorations were different,” said Katy. “For the boys, we made Ninja turtles and the girls more of a princess style.” She encourages others with basic crochet skills to try making the beanies. “Anybody can learn it. You just have to be committed. You can’t stop halfway through,” Katy stated. She also said that she enjoyed working on the project with her great-grandmother. “It was fun for me and relaxing to do. (Crocheting) really is a lost art,” Katy added. “If you have someone to teach you, you can do it.” Katy reported that the items that she and her great-grandmother created were distributed to hospitalized children in time for Christmas. Those who would like to donate yarn or create beanies or yarn wigs may visit the Magic Yarn Project website or www.facebook.com/magicyarn wigs for more information.

quality services while maintaining low taxes (81 percent), and the preservation of open space (77 percent). The issue of growth and land development in the county (55 percent) moved up in importance from the 2013 survey level of 42 percent. As in the two previous surveys, emergency services and the 911 system remain the most important services available to Chester County residents. Eighty-five percent of survey respondents claimed that emergency services and the 911 system are “very important” (up from 81 percent in 2013), and 77 percent confirmed that they would be very willing or somewhat willing to pay more county taxes for emergency services and the 911 system (up from 71 percent in 2013). In addition to “quality of life” questions, the citizen survey addresses the performance of county employees. Of all residents surveyed in 2018, 38 percent indicated that they had contact with county employees in the past 12 months. Residents who rated employee responsiveness as “excellent” continued to increase - from 40 percent in 2009 to 48 percent in 2013 to 50 percent in 2018. County employee courteousness was rated as excellent or good by nine out of 10 respondents. When asked what kind of job the county is doing in specific areas, the 2018 survey noted that

86 percent of respondents believe that the county is doing an excellent or good job at maintaining county parks, followed by ensuring public safety (82 percent) and preventing epidemics or public health hazards (81 percent). cation. The survey reported a significant increase in those who found the county an “excellent or good” place to find a good job (moving from 62 percent in 2013 to 79 percent in 2018). The percentage of residents describing Chester County as a better place to live increased from 25 percent in 2013 to 33 percent in 2018. Open space, scenery, and rural areas continue to be noted by respondents as the best thing about life in Chester County, and this year’s survey highlighted “maintenance of water quality” and “providing quality services while maintaining low taxes” as the two most important issues facing Chester County. For questions about the importance of issues facing Chester County, the top three results stating “most important or one of the most important” were maintaining the quality of water (83 percent), providing

As part of the formal review of Chester County’s strategic plan, Chester County commissioners recently announced the results of a citizen survey, undertaken as part of the review process for the strategic plan’s next five years. Results of the Chester County Quality of Life Survey, conducted by West Chester University’s Center for Social and Economic Policy Research during September, are based on a random sample of 1,256 responses, evenly represented from all areas of Chester County. The results provide a comparison to the citizens’ surveys undertaken in 2009 and 2013, which helped form the basis of the commissioners’ strategic plan goals. In 2018, residents continue to give Chester County high ratings in terms of it being an excellent or good place to raise a family (94 percent) and nine out of 10 (91 percent) rate it as an excellent or good place to obtain a good edu-

The group will meet at the west boat launch of Hopewell Lake, 785 Park Road, Elverson, at 11 a.m. for a 2-mile hike around the lake and through Hopewell Furnace National Historic Site. “It’s a great opportunity to get people outdoors and breathe some fresh air with other folks,” said Brent Erb, assistant park manager at French Creek State Park. “It’s also a great way to start the new year.” According to Godschall, EWC has been taking part in a First Day Hike for more than 10 years. Members of the Berks Strollers also join in the hike, as well as residents from surrounding communities. Attendees should dress for the weather and wear sturdy hiking shoes. Leashed, vaccinated pets will be welcome. The event is free, and no registration is necessary. For more information, readers may call the park office at 610-582-9680. There will also be a Hike to Rock Outcrop walk that will last one and a half hours and cover approximately 2.5 miles. It will include steep hills. There will also be a separate dog walk group. Dogs must be on leashes. The one-hour hike will cover approximately 2 miles and have some hills. All walks at Nolde Forest will begin at McConnell Hall. No registration is required. John Denlinger, advancement associate with Lancaster Mennonite School (LMS), feels that the annual volleyball tournament that benefits the Glen D. Lapp Endowment for Student Aid is unique. “We organize the tournament ‘Glen-style,’” said Denlinger. “(Glen Lapp) was so laid-back and relaxed.” “Glen-style” means there are no officials. “Everybody calls their own game,” explained Denlinger. “If they touch the net, they make their own call. If it’s out, you make your call. That’s how Glen would have wanted it.” Denlinger added that the Glen-style play is explained to the teams prior to each tournament. This year’s fundraiser will be held on Saturdays, Jan. 5 and 12, 2019, at Lancaster Mennonite High School (LMHS), 2176 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster. The tournament will be divided into two divisions. Division B will play beginning at 9 a.m. on Jan. 5, and Division A will play beginning at noon on Jan. 12. A maximum of 20 teams will play in each division. The tournament is organized by Mark Leaman and Kevin Groff, with help from Glen’s cousin Joel Lapp. Leaman and Groff played volleyball for Lancaster Mennonite High School (LMHS) and were coached by Glen in 1992 and 1993. The initial tournament held in Glen’s honor was organized by his cousin Tim Lapp. Glen was killed on Aug. 5, 2010, when he and nine others were ambushed after holding an eye and dental clinic in a remote area of Afghanistan. Glen, a nurse, traveled to Afghanistan in October 2008 through Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) in partnership with International Assistance Mission. Eye care is a pressing need in Afghanistan. To reach the village where the clinic was held, members of the group first flew, then
drove, and then walked, packing their equipment on hired horses. Before becoming a nurse, Glen attended Eastern Mennonite University (EMU), where he played volleyball and earned a degree in math. Following graduation from EMU, Glen was not quite sure what he wanted to do next. He worked as the dorm supervisor at LMHS and coached volleyball. Eventually, he decided to become a nurse, completing a Johns Hopkins accelerated course to become a registered nurse in one year. During his adult life, Glen lived in six states, serving people from all walks of life as a registered nurse working at Lancaster Regional Hospital and with the Traveling Nurses Association, which took him to New York City and Oregon. He also worked in a government clinic on a Native American reserve in Supai, Ariz. In December of 2011, LMS began the endowment, which - in honor of Glen’s work overseas - is used to provide scholarships for immigrant and refugee students. The fund supports need-based scholarships that enable students to receive an education at LMS. Since it began, the volleyball tournament has raised $50,000 for the fund. Denlinger noted that the tournament, which started with family and friends of Glen, has grown over the years and that last year, a few teams had to be turned away. This year, MCC, which still has a presence in Afghanistan, will have a display at both events that will include photos of Glen and testimonials. Representatives will be with the display to answer questions. Readers who wish to learn more about the tournament may visit http://glenlappvolleyball.weebly. com. Players and teams that wish to register may do so by searching for “Glen Lapp Memorial Volleyball” at www.active.com. Registrations will be accepted through Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2019.
