Rooted in COBYS’ support, Zoeller family tree sprouts branches

The experiences of fostering and adopting children can be both challenging and rewarding. They’re experiences that COBYS can both enhance and make more manageable.

Louis and Melissa Zoeller have been married 16 years, and they are the parents of seven kids, two of whom are their biological offspring and five of whom they adopted through the help of COBYS Family Services. For the Zoellers, who have affectionately dubbed their family “The Zoeller Bunch,” it’s sometimes a hectic,

topsy-turvy existence, but one that they have no regrets about.

“If there was one thing that brought (Melissa and me) together, it was that we felt God was calling us to adopt,” said Louis. “It was the one thing we could agree upon. When we got involved with COBYS, it helped that they were a faith-based organization. When they asked us if we wanted to adopt, we prayed on it and said yes.”

In addition to Louis and Melissa, the Mountville-based Zoeller Bunch includes Coral, 15; Dominic, 14; Sophie, 8; Izabel, 6; Tatum, 6; Oaklee, 5; and

Carson, 4. Sophie, Tatum, Izabel, Oaklee and Carson were all under the Zoellers’ foster care first before being officially adopted at various times over the last six years.

Before they were legally adopted, the children were wards of the state, meaning they could’ve been removed from the Zoeller household at any time.

“Foster care exists to give biological families an opportunity to get safe,” said Melissa. “Foster care exists to provide safety for children. Kids need to be safe. If (biological) parents can’t meet those safety standards, the goal

In 1954, Alvin Engle bought a printing press with a dream of starting his own publication. final chapters have yet to be written.

“I think some people do (know about HOPE International’s mission),” said Jeff Rutt, chief executive officer and founder of the organization. “I think more people need to know about the work God is doing through HOPE International. If we can share that with more people, hope can be restored in more lives. I’m always looking for ways to spread the word about the difference HOPE is making in the lives of families around the world. We need to be a voice for the voiceless.”

Headquartered at 227 Granite Run Drive, Lancaster, HOPE International is a Christian organization focused on helping individuals and families in poverty around the world to become financially stable. HOPE Interna -

tional performs its work through small, low-interest loans; savings groups; financial education; microfinance services; housing programs; and agricultural initiatives.

“When HOPE International was started, I didn’t know what I didn’t know,” said Rutt. “If you go to start a global organization, you don’t start out as an old dairy-farmerturned-builder. But God knew the steps. My vision at the beginning was to help a few poor families in Ukraine. It’s grown explosively, and I think we’re just getting started.”

That was 27 years ago, in 1997. Since then, HOPE International has provided financial assistance to more than 3 million people in more than 20 countries, such as Haiti, the Republic of the Congo, Thailand, Guatemala and Indonesia.

changes from re-unification to adoption. Adoption only happens when kids can’t re-unify safely. The primary goal is always working with the (biological) family. There’s no question that the biological families love them.”

“For us, we truly never knew if we were going to adopt until the decision was kind of made for us,” said Louis. “The courts decide which way the case is going to go. You know that any day (the children) could be out of your home.”

Before they became foster parents, Melissa and Louis received specific training from COBYS Family Services. During and after the

foster care and adoption processes, the Zoellers have been afforded support opportunities that include regular visits from COBYS representatives, advice, encouragement, financial assistance and 24-hour access to a counselor.

“(COBYS) is there to facilitate and support foster families,” said Louis. “If we have questions, we go to them. We had a county caseworker and a COBYS caseworker. (COBYS) was basically our main contact. Overall, COBYS is there for you.”

According to COBYS Family Services, approximately 15,000 children are currently in the Pennsylvania child welfare system. They

“When we first started, we were looking for ways to provide hope spiritually and financially,” said Rutt. “We were just a fledgling 501(c)(3) at the time. We were trying to figure out how we can join hands with other organizations and work together.”

HOPE International’s work is funded through individual donors, fundraisers, churches, foundations and business donations. Since its inception, HOPE International has raised more than $275 million and lent more than $1.7 billion.

Between 2017 and 2023, 98% of the loans in the HOPE International network were repaid.

“We want to continue to grow our programs and deepen our roots,” said Rutt. “There are more families to be served, thousands and thousands. There’s plenty

of need out there. We want to restore dignity in families’ lives and use that platform to proclaim the Gospel. I think there’s so much potential. HOPE International is a partner; we’re not trying to provide the answers.”

Financial stability in a community can have far-reaching ripple effects. It can spur growth and stimulate local economies.

“The families we serve are very competent; they have talents just like you and I,” said Rutt. “The point of the story is that I think the world can be a better place. Praise God for the amazing life inspirations that have happened and will happen going forward. I’m just a small part of it.” For additional information about HOPE International, go to www.hope international.org.

“For us, (adoption) really wasn’t a question,” said Melissa, “because you get to know the kids. We already knew them; they already knew us. There’s no reason for it not to be forever.”

“Tuck Everlasting” to engage theater audiences

There are few forms of entertainment more engaging than live theater. And having it performed close to home makes it more convenient.

Sort of a modern touring theatrical troupe, Servant Stage brings the intriguing art of live theater to the viewing audience.

“TV, movies and live theater have these amazing stories,” said Johnathan Bauer, the founder and executive director of Servant Stage. “But with live theater, you become part of the story; it draws you in. It only happens for that one moment in time. The next night is going to be a completely different performance.”

Servant Stage will present 12 performances of “Tuck Everlasting,” a Broadway musical adapted from Natalie Babbitt’s beloved novel, on select dates from Friday, Sept. 13, through Sunday, Sept. 29, at Warwick High School’s Performing Arts Center, 301 W. Orange St., Lititz. The shows will be staged on Fridays and Saturdays at 7 p.m. and on Saturdays and Sundays at 2 p.m. Admittance to each show will be on a pay-as-you-will basis. Tickets can be reserved in advance at www.servantstage.org or by calling 717-455-0255.

“The main character, 11-yearold Winnie, sets out on an adventure and meets the magical, mysterious Tuck family in the woods,” said Bauer. “In the end, Winnie faces a decision to live a normal life or become immortal. It’s very entertaining and makes you think. It really emphasizes time, the importance of time and

how we spend our time.”

A full-blown musical for people of all ages, “Tuck Everlasting” has a plot that moves quickly, and the show features music, singing and athletic dancing. Each two-hour, two-act performance includes an intermission.

The show has a cast of more than 50 members of varying ages from Lancaster and surrounding counties - some of whom are professionals and others of whom are relatively new to live theater.

“The whole village is part of the story,” said Bauer. “It’s got that classic feel with a large cast. (Cast members are) from all different backgrounds. Some are student performers. Some are emerging artists. Some have been performing their whole lives. Some are amateurs in the true sense and just love to do it.”

“Tuck Everlasting” is one of about 14 productions - totaling nearly 180 performances - that nonprofit Servant Stage will present this year at 50 venues across Lancaster County. It’s community theater brought to life in churches,

educators, public officials, business and community leaders, writers, artists, and musicians.

parks, colleges and retirement communities.

“It keeps us busy, but it’s by design,” said Bauer. “Our mission of accessibility brings shows to where the people are. It’s amazing how rich Lancaster County is in the arts, and it’s not always accessible for everyone. For us, theater is a service to the community.”

With its performances, Servant Stage reaches nearly 50,000 audience members each year.

“The major change is the scope and the impact we are having,” said Bauer, who was an actor when he founded Servant Stage in 2012. “The scale we are doing now is different, but the heart and mission feels the same. It’s people who love theater and love the community. I think that’s what’s driving our success.”

“When people hear ‘community theater’ or ‘pay-as-you-will,’ I think it comes with certain negative expectations,” Bauer added. “But when people come, they’re blown away. The people involved are just so talented. You have to see it to believe it.”
