Change of Pace Women’s Bible Study (CPWBS) has seen a lot of water flow under its bridge over the last half-century. People have come and gone, ideas have been explored and forgotten, generational torches have been passed, but the group has never wavered from its commitment to seeking life’s deeper meaning and God’s will.

we do to bring us together?’ It’s been a bonding of God’s words, and (the women have) been there for each other to depend on. We’re there for anyone who comes in. It’s just a beautiful place; there’s love and hugs and tears and crying, and the women leave rejoicing. We’re known for connecting in our fractured world.”

“(CPWBS) is a place where women are not alone.”

“(CPWBS’ origin) had everything to do with my mother (Ruth Martin) and I,” said Dona Fisher, CPWBS’ founder. “We didn’t get along, and I couldn’t deal with it anymore. So we asked, ‘What can

On Thursday, Sept. 26, from 9 to 11:30 a.m., CPWBS will celebrate the 50th anniversary of its founding with a special meeting at Lancaster Alliance Church, 210 Pitney Road, Lancaster. The nondenominational group will present author Julie Clinton, the founder of Extraordinary Women Ministries, which seeks to draw women closer to God, and three study offerings - “Me, Myself and Lies,” “Your Beautiful Purpose” and “Blessed Are the Chosen.”

“(CPWBS) is a place where women are not alone,” said Fisher. “It’s a sisterhood, and they can become friends. When

Young people are ambassadors for what Lancaster County Community Foundation (LCCF) stands for.

The next major event in LCCF’s yearlong celebration of its 100th anniversary will focus on the future and empowering youths. It’s a great way to start the next hundred years.

“Young people are the future,” said Val Schade, who’s been LCCF’s communications manager for three years. “We believe if we embolden children and young adults, we are all impacted. We’re taking an opportunity to look back, while looking ahead. Thanks to the past 100 years that saw

Walking is good, healthy exercise. Walking with someone can be even better. Walking for someone might just be the very best.

Hope Inspire Love’s upcoming Freedom Walk aims to raise money for victims of human trafficking and bring awareness to a continuing societal problem.

“We’re walking with (survivors), and we want to invite

others to walk with us as well,” said Amy Thurston, Hope Inspire Love’s co-founder, president and chief executive officer (CEO) for the last seven years. “When we walk, we’ve seen people cry. It might be walking for someone who can’t walk. When you walk, it brings hope to you and your community.”

As part of Save a Life Day East, an event will be held on Thursday, Sept. 26, to distribute naloxone, also known by the brand name Narcan. Save a Life Day East is a naloxone distribution event that started four years ago in West Virginia and has spread to more than 300 counties in 30 states. The event is meant to address the high numbers of opiate overdoses both locally and across the country.

Distribution sites in Lancaster County will be Columbia Dream Center, 360 Locust St., Columbia, from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and 5 to 6:30 p.m.; Bench Mark Program, 102 S. Prince St., Lancaster, from 3 to 5:30 p.m.; Bethel AME Church, 450 E. Strawberry St., Lancaster, from 9 a.m. to noon; Bright Side Opportunities Center, 515 Hershey Ave., Lancaster, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.; Ephrata Social Services, 227 N. State St., Ephrata, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.; and Quarryville Library Center, 357 Buck Road, Quarryville, from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

All of the naloxone will be distributed for free. Additionally, attendees of the event may learn more about how to spot

an overdose, how to administer naloxone, and different treatment options and recovery supports in the local community.

To volunteer to distribute naloxone during Save a Life Day East, visit https://tinyurl.com/ SaveALifeDayEast.

Those who require naloxone at other times are advised that Pennsylvania has a standing order that allows pharmacies to dispense naloxone to anyone, even without a prescription. Those obtaining the substance may be required to pay a copay.

Naloxone is also available from the Harm Reduction Project, located in the area of King and Water streets from 8 to 11 a.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. For more details, call 717-669-7527.

Lancaster County Joining Forces can supply naloxone for those who fill out the form at www.lancasterjoiningforces.org/ be-prepared/request-narcan/.

Freedom Walk

Saturday, Oct. 5, at Musser Park, 135 N. Lime St., Lancaster. The 2-mile silent walk through the city of Lancaster will begin and end at Musser Park and will take participants through the Central Market area and past the downtown government buildings.

Walkers can register for the Freedom Walk at www.hope inspirelove.org/freedomwalk.

“We are seeing a rise in the need,” said Thurston. “If we can bring awareness to our community, we can prevent this from happening to our children. Some people can’t believe this is happening in our backyard. Now the question becomes, ‘What are we going to do about it?’”

“I feel people are becoming more aware because we’re finally talking about it,” Thurston added. “People realize it’s affecting their community. People are reaching out, and we’re getting more invites from other nonprofits. Hope Inspire Love has been getting into the community even more, and that’s the beauty: It takes a village for what we do. We love telling the survivors that the services are free because the community is behind their journey.”

The Freedom Walk will also feature an informational survivors’ tent that relays the personal stories of individuals who have been affected by human trafficking.

“This walk is for everyone,” said Thurston. “People do it with their dogs. We see church groups, university students, local nurse groups, local businesses will create teams,

donors and partners. Some survivors show up. Some people have been doing it for five years. It shows the dedication of the community to our cause. It’s people getting uncomfortable, showing up and walking. It can empower people.”

Organizers of the Freedom Walk are hoping that 500 individuals will participate and that the event will raise about $50,000 for Hope Inspire Love’s survivor services. Hope Inspire Love, which is headquartered at 1380 Harrisburg Pike, Lancaster, also conducts a fundraising gala in April.

“We heard about the concept of a freedom walk and thought it was something tangible we could do in Lancaster County,” said Thurston of the 2019 founding of the event. “We took a global concept and made it local. What was neat was having people join us in the mission. Now it has evolved into this beautiful community interaction.”

Thurston and husband Steve Thurston founded Hope Inspire Love in 2017. The local nonprofit employs six workers, contracts work from two others and has trained 26 volunteer mentors who have been matched with survivors.

Some of the services Hope Inspire Love offers include trauma-informed mentorship, prevention education and programs related to outreach and awareness.

Author Louise Penny will highlight library benefit event

A murder has been committed in Three Pines, a tiny Quebec village, but don’t worry. Inspector Armand Gamache is on the case. Gamache is a lead character in 18 bestselling books by author Louise Penny, and he’ll star in her newest book, “The Grey Wolf,” which will be released in October. Fans of Penny (and Gamache) are invited to meet the author at an event on Thursday, Oct. 31. Penny will sit down with WGAL news reporter Anne Shannon to share her writing process, how she finds inspiration and more during the talk, which will be held at Calvary Church, 1051 Landis Valley Road, Lancaster, beginning at 1 p.m.

Hosted by the Council of Friends of Public Libraries of Lancaster County and Midtown Scholar Bookstore-Cafe, the author event will raise funds for all of the public libraries in the county, said Mary Ann Steinhauer, who is a member of the Council of Friends.

“This is a really wonderful event, because no matter where you live in Lancaster County, this event will support your public library,” she said. “Our proceeds are divided between all 17 libraries, the Bookmobile and the Be READy Rover, which focuses on early learning.”

Established in 2000, the Council of Friends of Public Libraries is composed of volunteers who are committed to promoting reading countywide. Over the years, the organization has raised more than $229,000 for local libraries.

Steinhauer said ticket sales for the author event have been brisk, but the space at Calvary Church can hold just over 2,000 people, so there is plenty of room for everyone.

“There’s a core group of Louise Penny fans who are very loyal to her and love her books,” Steinhauer remarked. “They love that the books are an ongoing series, like a soap opera, with the main character showing up in every one. People get very attached to that character.” Penny has shared that her late husband, Michael, inspired

the character of Armand Gamache, and Penny described Michael as “kindly, thoughtful, generous, a man of courage and integrity, who both loved and accepted love.”

Steinhauer said Penny’s books are also popular because they bring a cozy familiarity to readers, even though they are murder mysteries.

“When someone opens a Louise Penny book, they know what they’re going to get,” she said, noting that all of the books in the Gamache series are set in Three Pines. Penny’s books have won multiple honors, including nine Agatha Awards, given to mystery books, and they have been translated into 31 languages.

Although fans of Penny’s books will be drawn to the author’s talk, Steinhauer noted that the Council of Friends’ events bring in a wide audience.

We encourage civic and fraternal groups, schools, churches, Scouting groups, and other local organizations to submit news releases of general interest to the majority of our readership. Primary consideration is given to dated articles of an informative nature–activities and events of local interest sponsored, presented, or planned by area organizations and institutions. “We have some fans of the event itself, not just the author,” she said. “We have people who love being at an event where the main focus is authors and their writing style. They have the freedom to ask the author questions during a question-and-answer portion of the event. We open it up to the audience so people feel a real connection with the whole process of being an author. We also have people who feel closer to these authors who they have admired for years by coming into the library and checking out a book, and now they get to meet them in person.” Tickets are required to attend the author event. Each ticket includes a hardbound copy of “The Grey Wolf.” For more information and to purchase tickets, visit https://lanca sterlibraries.org/fall-author-event.

Lititz AMBUCS event will benefit 20 local nonprofits

AMBUCS will conduct the 10th edition of its annual craft beer fest from 3 to 6 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 21, at TAIT, 401 W. Lincoln Ave., Lititz. The event, for people age 21 and over, will serve as a fundraiser for Lititz AMBUCS, and all proceeds will go toward Lititz AMBUCS-sponsored local nonprofits.

Tickets can be purchased in advance at www.lititzcraftbeer fest.com. Any remaining tickets will available on-site on the day of the event, and payment by some form of electronic means is required.

Up to 3,500 adults are expected to attend.

“The vast majority of people come with friends,” said Best. “They’re going to come and hang out and socialize. People get something to eat and sit and talk. It’s a very social atmosphere.”

Representatives of more than 85 craft breweries from Lancaster County, surrounding counties, other parts of Pennsylvania and even from as far away as Virginia, New York and New Jersey will be on hand for the Lititz Craft Beer Fest. Nearly 180 offerings will be available.

The afternoon’s vibe will be enhanced by live music and culinary options from local food trucks.

“The event has evolved a lot,” said Best, who helped found the

Lititz Craft Beer Fest in 2014. “At the beginning, there were a lot more breweries from out of state.

So many of the breweries we have now are from Pennsylvania; they’re more local and regional. What we’ve also seen grow is our ability to engage with sponsors, and they’ve become great partners. Some are just eager to help in any way they can.”

Through last year’s festival, Lititz AMBUCS raised $106,000 for 20 nonprofits, including the Warwick Community Ambulance Association, the Warwick School District, Warwick Education Foundation, the Lititz Warwick Community Chest and the national chapter of AMBUCS. Since its inception, the festival has raised more than $700,000 for charities.

“The event is first and foremost a fundraiser that supports the mission, and the mission is conquering challenges in independence and mobility,” said Best. “A lot of people have come to love this event, but it doesn’t just happen. It’s a labor of love for us because we see the good that comes from it. There are a lot of organizations aligned with our mission, and people who buy tickets can feel good about having a great time. Those funds are going to organizations that have a need and do good things in the community.”

opportunities for several generations, we are a community brimming with promise. We think it’s our turn to make history and change the next 100 years.”

LCCF’s evening of looking ahead is being called Elevating the Next Generation. It’s being staged in multiple rooms of Millersville University’s student center, 21 S. George St., Millersville, from 5 to 7 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 28.

Open to the public and free to the attend, the event is geared toward young people from middle school all the way through college age.

“We’re excited about this event,” said Schade. “The goal is to invite and inspire the Lancaster County community to think about how important the next generation is. It’s youth-centered and youth-designed, but it’s not only for youth. It’s meant to be energetic and casual.”

LCCF’s Elevating the Next Generation event will feature food trucks, a gaming truck with over 100 games, a wellness room with interactive and mindful activities and a performance by the Crispus Attucks Community Center’s drill team and band squad, the Infamous Unstoppables. In addition, the event will include a session on food sustainability, displays of student artwork and poetry readings.

Also, the next round of recipients of LCCF’s Shaping Tomorrow awards and scholarships will be announced that evening.

“We’re hoping for a large turnout,” said Schade. “We recognize that if the event is open to young

people that they’re going to be accompanied by family. It’s youth and family friendly.”

Elevating the Next Generation is the third of four events LCCF is conducting to commemorate its founding in 1924. The first two were staged at Rock Lititz in March and at Buchanan Park in April, and the fourth, titled Protecting Our Planet, will be held at the Farm at Eagles Ridge on Thursday, Oct. 17.

“Lancaster County Community Foundation stewards the county endowment, and we harness the power of community and local philanthropy to make Lancaster a better place to live,” said Schade. “We are here because of the work and hope and vision of people who came before us. Our mission is to work for the people who are coming after us, for generations to come.”

Over the last century, LCCF has donated more than $60 million to local causes. LCCF’s signature event, ExtraGive, has generated more than $100 million in donations for local organizations.

“Lancaster has always been a county of change-makers and hard workers,” said Schade. “The endowment has always been shaped by community members with that in mind. The beautiful thing about the endowment is it can be flexible and that it can be used to meet needs in the moment.”

Change of Pace

Thursday morning from September to April at Lancaster Alliance Church, is a sisterhood of about 150 female attendees. They hail from all walks of life and from various parts of Lancaster County, from Manheim Township to Elizabethtown, from Strasburg to Ephrata.

“Some women leave their Thursdays open to feed their souls,” said Fisher, a resident of Bent Creek.

“They’re all different; everyone has a different personality. But I treat everyone with respect. The pain that these women come to me with, if I don’t know how to deal with it, I turn it over to God. You wouldn’t believe how many of these women don’t have a church. They come in to be healed.”

“Our pace in the real world demands our time,” Fisher continued. “Unless we set aside time for

from pg 1

God, we’ll go off to places where life is not for God. I thought it would be great to name it Change of Pace.”

The women of CPWBS regularly deal with all sorts of life challenges, including raising children, abuse, spousal difficulties, mental health issues and physical limitations.

“(The Bible) has all the truth in it, and the truth will set us free,” said Fisher.

At the start, CPWBS began meeting at Indian Springs Golf Club in East Hempfield Township, now Four Seasons Golf Club. The group has been meeting at Lancaster Alliance Church for the better part of the last 35 years.
