Many artists are perform-
ers. They create with an audience in mind.
There’s a reason that displays of artists’ creations are called shows.
In that particular vein, the Landis Woods Outdoor Fine Arts Show (LWOFAS) is a typical art show.
“I think for most artists, it’s important for people to see their work,” said Paris Wyatt Llanso,
a member of LWOFAS’ selection committee. “They want validation. Kind of like, did they hit the mark? Just to have another set of eyes on it.”
That symbiotic relationship that exists between viewer and artist will be prevalent when the 26th edition of the LWOFAS is staged on Saturday, Sept. 28, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Landis Woods Park, 2369 Lititz Pike, Lancaster. The event will be held rain or shine and is free to attend. The artists will offer some of their
work for purchase.
“We want to create a wonderful atmosphere for the community and artists who attend,” said Llanso. “It’ll be a day for people to explore music and fine arts. It’s very community oriented. People get to enjoy art in a nice, relaxed atmosphere. It’s such a nice day. It’s delightful.”
Nearly 40 artists and more than 2,000 people are expected to attend the LWOFAS. The majority of the artists are local to Lancaster County, and they will

Mental Health America of Lancaster County (MHALC) is bringing attention to the importance of mental health, and
much of its good work originates from simple conversations.

Olympic athlete. United States of America Olympic athlete. United States of America Olympic medalist. Each has its own specific ring to it. For Casey Kaufhold, they’re titles that all hold special meaning.
At 20 years of age, Kaufhold is, and always will be, all three. The 2022 graduate of
Conestoga Valley High School is now more than a month removed from competing at her second Summer Olympic Games, and in many ways, the glow has yet to wane.
“I’m still riding the high because I worked so hard to get there,” said Kaufhold, one of the finest female archers in the world. “I’m definitely still settling in from the experience. So few people get an opportunity to

“I think the best part of competing was having my family there,” continued Kaufhold. “I also competed at Tokyo (in 2021), and I couldn’t have my family there (because of the pandemic). To get a medal and have them there was really special.”
On Aug. 2 in Paris, during competition in the 2024 Summer Olympics, Kaufhold and teammate Brady Ellison captured a bronze medal in the mixed team archery event with a 6-2 victory over India. The medal was the first ever for the United States in the mixed team archery event, and Kaufhold became the
Earlier in the Games, Kaufhold had finished 17th in the women’s individual archery event and was part of a USA squad that came in ninth in the women’s team archery competition.
“The women’s individual and team events were the first two events I competed in, and they didn’t go the way I would’ve liked,” said Kaufhold. “I struggled with nerves. When I went into the mixed team competition, I wanted to stick with my process. I didn’t feel I shot as well as I could have, and I wanted to show what I could do. I wanted to shoot the way I was in practice. My goal was to come home with a medal. I didn’t
At the Summer Olympics in Tokyo - which had been postponed a year because of COVID-19 - the then-17year-old Kaufhold finished 17th in the individual women’s archery competition and was part of an American group that came in seventh in the women’s team archery competition.
“Tokyo was totally a different experience,” said Kaufhold. “It’s hard to even compare. I was 17, and I felt like I was new to everything.”
“For archers, the Olympics are our biggest event,” Kaufhold added. “Because it’s every four years, there’s a lot of hype around it, and it’s very prestigious. It’s hard to get there, and you
Since taking up the sport at the age of 7, Kaufhold has combined dedication, talent and skill with family tradition to become one of the top female archers nationally and internationally. It’s a foundation that has put her in position to compete at the next few Summer Olympic Games.
“I’d like to compete in Los Angeles in 2028, and in 2032, in Australia,” said Kaufhold. “I’m pretty locked in as far as my career goes. I’m someone who likes having a plan and I like having things set up. The Olympics have been a goal of mine since I was 12. To get there twice, feels great. It’s very fulfilling to have accomplished it by 20.”

Christian nonprofit organization American Home Life International (AHLI) began decades ago with the dream of Marvin and Ruth Powers, a newlywed couple from Lancaster that wished to serve side by side as missionaries overseas. Although their initial dream of evangelism abroad was never realized, Marvin and Ruth hosted their first international student in 1972. More than fifty years later, AHLI has served thousands of students from around the globe, and it continues to help them find host families throughout the United States.
AHLI’s mission statement is to “provide quality education programs to international students in the safe, caring environ -
ment of Christian host families where they will experience the love of Christ.” Nicole Bianchi, a resident of West Lampeter, is an AHLI coordinator.
Bianchi’s job is to locate families in the community that wish to open their homes to students, visiting the potential hosts to make sure they will be
a good fit. “I love my job. The kinds of families that open up their homes are usually incredible people,” Bianchi said. “Every time I leave a home, I’m blown away by the heart of the community.”
Bianchi’s experience with AHLI began when she was 6 years old, after
St. Peter’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, 10 Delp Road, Lancaster, will host two performances of Handel’s “Messiah” on Sunday, Dec. 15, and community members are invited to join the chorus.
Singers will have the opportunity to perform part one of “Messiah” and additional choruses with professional soloists and a full orchestra. Singers of all ages, from high school through senior adults, are welcome to participate. No auditions or prior knowledge of the music are required, but singers should be able to read music.
Rehearsals will be held at St. Peter’s on Thursdays from 7:30 to 8:30
p.m. from Oct. 3 through Dec. 12. Singers will need to purchase the Novello score, which will be available at the rehearsals for a fee. There is no other fee to participate.
To express interest in participating or for more information, contact the church’s director of music, Tom Berdos, at

program manager since November of 2023. “Now, we have more people talking about their mental health. We’re shining a light on it, and it’s become more acceptable. The more we talk about it, the more we’re realizing we’re not alone.”
Located at 245 Butler Ave., No. 204, Lancaster, MHALC is more of a facilitator, an advocate for mental health, than a hands-on treatment organization. MHALC performs its work through education, support and mental health screenings and by outreach programs at businesses, libraries and schools.
“If you have a brain, you have mental health,” said Krahling. “We need to realize that mental health and physical health are combined.”
MHALC serves Lancaster County residents dealing with depression, anxiety, grief, personality disorders and thoughts of suicide. Last year alone, MHALC reached nearly 800 people through its advocacy program; 2,262 youths through its school education; and 6,075 individuals through its community outreach support program.
Also in 2023, MHALC’s family and youth advocate program served more than 560 local people and wrote 136 individual education plans (IEPs). During that same time, MHALC’s prison advocacy program reached more than 1,500 people incarcerated at the Lancaster County Prison.
“The more we advocate, the more people are reaching out and seeking help,” said Krahling. “It’s everyone,
anyone who has concerns about mental health. It could be themselves or a child. It’s people being challenged by everyday life. We want to make sure people have the support and the medication they need. The biggest thing is getting the word out that MHALC is here. I like to go out and meet the public. When people realize who I am, they want to talk about mental health.”
At the heart of what MHALC does is people helping people. Supported by the work of volunteers, MHALC’s staff consists of four full-time employees and four part-timers.
MHALC receives funding from the Lancaster County government through grants and fundraisers.
“(MHALC employees are) a lot of peers,” said Krahling. “It’s people who are
Individuals receiving government benefits often have limits on how much money they can save before their benefits are affected. But these limits make it difficult to save for housing, a car or educational or other goals. ABLE accounts, which are tax-advantaged savings accounts that can fund disability-related expenses, were created
to assist individuals with disabilities to overcome these barriers.
Hope Served will host an ABLE account community training program with Diana Fishlock from the Pennsylvania Treasury Department on Thursday, Sept. 26, from 7 to 9
p.m. Attendees will learn who is eligible for the accounts, how to open an account and how to utilize
an ABLE account for the benefit of themselves or a loved one.
Fishlock is one of Pennsylvania’s main experts on the topic. The training will be held at Hope Served’s offices at 201 W. High St., Manheim.

passionate about mental health. We don’t want to provide therapy; we want to get clients to people who are therapists.”
MHALC was established as an independent affiliate of Mental Health America in 1977. Mental Health America was founded in 1909 as the National Mental Health Association.
“We’re very strong with our education, and we have phenomenal programs,” said Krahling. “Our goal is to make talking about mental health like talking about the weather. There are thousands and thousands of people alive today because they’ve talked about mental health.”

LancasterHistory has joined Museums for All, a national program that encourages everyone to visit museums regularly and build lifelong museum habits. Museums for All is an initiative of the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), a federal
agency based in Washington, D.C., and administered by the Association of Children’s Museums (ACM). Specifically, the program ensures low-cost access to museums for families and individuals receiving food assistance benefits across the country.
Effective Sept. 3, LancasterHistory now accepts valid Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program Electronic Benefit Transfer (SNAP EBT) cards or Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) cards in exchange for reduced admission for adults age 18 and up and free admission for children age 17 and under.
LancasterHistory joins more than 1,300 other institutions across the United States, including eight museums in Lancaster County, that are already part of Museums for All. The other local museums are the Ephrata Cloister; Hands-On House, Children’s Museum of
Lancaster; the Lancaster Medical Heritage Museum; Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum; the National Watch and Clock Museum; the North Museum of Nature and Science; the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania; and the Winters Heritage House Museum and the Seibert Genealogy Research Library.
Lancaster is considered a Hub City in the Museums for All program, indicating that three or more local organizations are active participants in the initiative.
To receive the Museums for All rate at LancasterHistory, visitors must present their EBT or WIC card and a valid form of ID upon check-in. The reduced rate is available during normal operating hours for up to four individuals per EBT or WIC card, one of whom must be age 18 or older. show their creations in the mediums of watercolors, oils, acrylics, photography, sculpting, ceramics, jewelry and mixed media.
Based on scores given by the contestant’s judge and well-known local artist Lisa Madenspacher, prizes will be awarded in a number of categories, including best of show.
“Landis Woods really is the perfect setting for art,” said Llanso. “It’s like a mini-Mount Gretna. It’s just a beautiful day in the park with entertainment and gorgeous art.”
“I think my favorite part is the people who come to it,” she added. “Everyone’s having a good time, and you get to meet a lot of people.”
What also makes LWOFAS’ vibe flow is food from the concession stand, drinks and the live music provided by four bands at the park’s amphitheater: Stone Soup String Band at 9 a.m., Jim Sorrentino Jazz Band at 10:45 a.m.,
a group from Lancaster County Folk Music and Fiddle Society at 12:30 p.m. and Steve Barth at 2:15 p.m.
“It’s just for people to get out and support local artists,” said Llanso. “A lot of people bring their dogs. It’s a nice size. It’s big enough to have a lot to offer, but it doesn’t overwhelm. ... Things like this can’t continue unless you have the support of the community, the people.”
Former Manheim Township supervisor and art aficionado Roy Baldwin is credited with founding LWOFAS in 1999.
“He was a creative influence in the township, and he really wanted to have a fine arts show,” said Llanso. “Manheim Township has carried on the tradition.”

From the outside looking in, it’s simply kids doing kids things. But it also serves as a reminder that motivation can be fostered and nurtured.
There are plenty of interesting elements of the Lititz recCenter’s Youth Triathlon. But perhaps the most important thing to know is what it does for kids.
“I think it’s important to engage our kids because we’re leading more sedentary lifestyles,” said Corey Pickel, the associate executive director of the Lititz recCenter. “It’s important for kids to get out and move. This is a friendly form of competition that could lead to other things (like increased physical activity). Competition is a great thing. It’s awesome when you’re lifting each other up. Some people are going to perform well. But our goal is to support everyone to do their best and to continue to improve.”
A scaled-back version of the rec center’s adult competition, the Youth Triathlon will be staged from 5 to 6 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 4, at Lititz recCenter, 301 W. Maple St., Lititz. The 18th edition of the annual event is open to boys and girls in four age categories: 5 and 6, 7 and 8, 9 and 10 and 11 and 12. Participants can register by visiting www.lititz

her parents had decided to host students through the organization. “It was just a part of our normal family culture,” said Bianchi. “I even went to Japan to visit a student who I consider a sister to me.”
After graduating high school, Bianchi married a professional baseball player whose career required them to travel frequently. Bianchi and her husband lived with AHLI host families until his retirement, and they decided to become a host family themselves after returning to Lancaster. Bianchi has hosted students from various countries in Europe and Asia, and she is currently hosting a student from China.
rec.com/special-events -programs, emailing SimonAbabou@lititzrec. com or calling 717-6265096, or they may register in person the day of the event.
“Usually, we have some music going that lifts the atmosphere,” said Pickel. “The kids are excited. They’re high-fiving each other and getting familiar with the course. Everyone’s cheering each other on and moving to the next event. It’s cool. It’s really high energy throughout the event.”
The Youth Triathlon course, which will take place entirely on the grounds of the Lititz recCenter, will vary in length based on age. Each contestant will first swim one to three laps of the rec center’s Olympic-size indoor pool, then pedal two to five laps of its outdoor bike course and finish by running one to three laps of the rec center’s quarter-mile outdoor grass course.
“It’s designed to be fun, so everyone can come in and participate,” said Pickel. “It’s also a great learning experience. Sort of like, ‚ÄòHey, this is what a triathlon feels like.’ (Children) come in, have a good time and get to compete in a friendly environment.”
More than 80 kids, mainly from Lititz and surrounding communities - some of whom are mem -
bers of the rec center and some of whom aren’t - are expected to participate.
“It’s not a fundraiser; it’s just one of our annual special events,” said Pickel. “I think what’s unique about it is that the Lititz recCenter has the facilities to stage an event like this. It’s designed to introduce our youth to something different. It’s catered to the youth. We want to try to introduce things to the community that everyone can be a part of. It’s just a great event all the way around.”
Established in 2006, the Youth Triathlon is one of five special events that
the Lititz recCenter hosts throughout the year. The rec center also conducts a golf outing in May, an adult triathlon in August, a rock climbing competition in September and a 5K run in September.
“The event continues to grow,” said Pickel. “Our goal is to improve lives through fitness and provide exceptional programs. We want to come together as a community and get the word out about what we do. This is a way to empower our youth to explore healthier ways to deal with stress. It’s a perfect event for a first-timer to have fun with friends.”
As a coordinator, Bianchi meets with visiting students once per month to check in and share a fun activity.
“I had such a passion for (AHLI) from hosting,” Bianchi said. “I feel like it does things really well, putting kids in safe, caring homes while they get an education in Lancaster.”
Although Bianchi is based in West Lampeter, host families can be located anywhere in the county.
In addition to providing international students with a safe environment to receive an education, Bianchi said AHLI allows families a paid opportunity to learn about other cultures. “People think it’s going to be like having
another kid, but it really ends up being a blessing,” added Bianchi. “Parents already have to make dinner, and every day our student will tell us about his culture, which is good for my kids to hear about.”
