At North Museum, curiosity stokes imagination

There exists a specific group of people who frequent museums merely to satisfy their curiosity. They don’t go to intentionally learn, but the learning happens organically, naturally.

Perhaps it’s not important to know exactly what type of learning goes on at the North Museum, only that the place simply promotes learning.

“It’s the joy of discovery, and it draws you in,” said Scott Downs, the North Museum’s director of development and strategic partnerships. “That’s what happens at a museum. As you wander around the museum, you discover things. You stumble into things. Who knows what you’ll find? You don’t know what to expect. It’s a fascinating place.”

For the curious of all ages, there is plenty to find and discover at the North Museum of Nature and Science, which is located at 400 College Ave., Lancaster. The North Museum is three floors of exhibits, informational displays, stories and memories in the making - more than 500,000 objects in all.

“Without learning, I don’t think any of us survive,” said Downs. “Humans have been learning since we first populated the Earth. The North Museum prides itself as a leader in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics). The natural sciences are important. We’re really proponents of curiosity. It’s terribly important to foster that interest.”

Last year, when David Kieffer was interviewed about the first FaithfulGive, the board president said that he hoped the online giving event would raise $500,000. “My minimum goal was to do $300,000,” recalled Kieffer. “(I thought), ‘If we do $500,000, it’s a resounding success.’” When all the donations were tallied up at the end of the event, the 2023 FaithfulGive had raised more than $729,000. “That more than met my

expectations,” said Kieffer.

This year’s FaithfulGive will begin on Sunday, Oct. 20, and conclude on Tuesday, Oct. 22.

This year, more than 70 local organizations have signed on to take part in the fundraiser, and each day will be designated for certain activities.

“While people can give on Sunday, (Oct. 20), the goal is to lay these organizations before the throne in prayer,” explained Kieffer of the opening day. “This year we are calling it Faithful Give Sunday - A Day of Prayer.”

It’s hard to put a finger on. But it seems like the celebration of Halloween has sort of shifted and changed over the years.

Still just as popular as ever, Halloween is a bit less scary and a little more family-oriented, community-driven and playful. It’s unclear if events like the Manheim Township Halloween Carnival are a result of that evolution or a cause of it.

“Halloween is pretty much a

Lancaster Flute Ensemble to present concert

The Apostles Academy of Arts & Sciences at Church of the Apostles United Church of Christ, 1850 Marietta Ave., Lancaster, will present a concert titled “Characters” by the Lancaster Flute Ensemble on Sunday, Oct. 20, at 3 p.m. as part of its monthly concert series.

The Lancaster Flute Ensemble, formed in 2016, currently has more than 20 members from Lancaster, York, Elizabethtown, Ephrata, Lititz, Reading and Lebanon and regularly rehearses at Church of the Apostles. The group got its start when three enthusiasts met at a flute camp in the Poconos. Wanting to continue the musical camaraderie at home,

they decided to form an ensemble in the Lancaster area. Welcoming players with diverse musical backgrounds, the ensemble works together to make playing a joyful experience.

The group features a variety of flutes, including piccolos, C flutes, alto and bass flutes and contrabass flutes. The group even incorporates a cello to enrich the sound. The repertoire spans classical, popular, sacred and folk music, with original arrangements by founding member Ray-Michael Kauffman.

As part of its outreach to the greater Lancaster area, the academy offers a variety of cultural programs, including concerts, music and art lessons, and support for local scholarship initiatives. Most recently, the academy contributed to STEAM programs in partnership with the Hempfield Foundation.

the North Museum of Nature and Science is home to all sorts of interesting exhibits, like a live animal room, a dinosaur hall, rock and mineral collections, a planetarium, a nature gallery, an art gallery and an ornithology collection. It’s a wonderful space to uncover things you didn’t know.

“The North Museum is committed to the community,” said Downs.

“We are committed to being an educational resource for everyone in the community. Science is ever changing. We’re not constrained to a fixed number of topics. It can be anything and everything. It’s living.”

The North Museum hosts more than 35,000 visitors annually, the majority of whom come from within a 100-mile radius of Lancaster.

The North Museum has become a popular destination for field trips and bus trips alike.

“It’s genuinely inquisitive people,” said Downs. “They are people who are passionate about the museum because we have been doing it for so long. When parents bring kids to the museum, it’s an opportunity to explore together. It’s not just mom and dad bringing kids and letting them roam around the museum.”

“For me, the best thing is when I hear the noise of the kids,” Downs continued. “I hear kids teaching each other, discovering things and having a great time. It reminds me of why I do it. I’m with an organization that preserves the past, looks to the future, and we sell education and fun.”

The North Museum, which was established in 1953, employs nine full-time staffers and 12 part-timers. The facility is funded through donations, sponsorships, government grants, admission fees and paid programming.

“I like to call us the Little Museum Who Could,” said Downs. “There is no shortage of big ideas and big accomplishments here. We continue to change and evolve. There’s always something new and fresh to see with us. We partner with so many different organizations throughout the community. We also help bridge the gap between education and industry.”

“We really try to create

major holiday,” said Manheim Township recreation director Matt Stopa. “But it’s less stress compared to holidays like Thanksgiving and Christmas. It’s all around more fun. That’s why I think it’s as popular as ever. There are two kinds of Halloweens - the Disney, family-fun kind and the more scary kind. We’re going for the more family-oriented fun, festive atmosphere. It’s something different for families to do together in October.”

Sponsored by the municipality’s Recreation and Park Planning Department, the eighth annual Manheim Township Halloween Carnival will be presented on Saturday, Oct. 26, from 1 to 4 p.m., inside and outside at the Overlook Activities Center, 301 Golf Drive, Lancaster. The event, which will be held rain or shine, will feature games, food, fun, costumes and community spirit.

The Manheim Township Halloween Carnival is free to attend, but some activities require fees.

“It’s not a nighttime thing,” said Stopa. “It’s designed to be a Halloween, fall, autumn kind of event. That’s the atmosphere we’re trying to push for. The ultimate goal is to provide a fun and festive experience for the families who attend. It’ll be a different approach to recreation.”

The highlight of the event promises to be the Trunk or Treat portion sponsored by the Manheim Township Police Department. Children will be afforded an opportunity to select candy, goodies and prizes from more than 40 decorated vehicle trunks sponsored by local businesses and organizations.

In addition, the Halloween Carnival will stage a costume contest and parade beginning at 1:30 p.m. Prizes will be awarded for contestants age 4 and under, ages 5 to 8, and ages 9 to 12, as well as for group entries.

There will also be 12 carnival-style games, four food trucks, a haunted expedition, balloon animals, photo opportunities and entertainment. The ambiance of the event will be influenced by hay bales and decorated corn.

“My favorite part is

Sports Hall of Fame to induct new members

all the different games,” said Stopa. “We’ve pretty much added a new game every year, and they’re custom-made. It’s a unique event, and it’s an experience. Not every municipality does an event like this.”

More than 2,000 family members and community members from Manheim Township and beyond are expected to attend.

“I would certainly hope that people are enjoying it and that they’re returning,” said Stopa. “People come from all different areas of Lancaster County, and that’s pretty cool to see.”

The Manheim Township Halloween Carnival, one of a handful of events sponsored by Manheim Township Recreation and Park Planning annually, is being held at the Overlook Activities Center for the second straight year, after the event outgrew its original home at Stauffer Park. The carnival requires the work of about 50 employees and volunteers, including members of the Manheim Township High School Key Club, to pull off.

“It began with 50 people at Stauffer Park, and it’s turned into something with a higher standard, and it’s brought more people with it,” said Stopa. “We put a lot of effort into it. We take a lot of time to think about how to make it better, and every year it does get better. I’m excited to see how it’s better this year.”

The Lancaster County Sports Hall of Fame banquet will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 23, at the Eden Resort, 222 Eden Road, Lancaster. The event will begin at 4:30 p.m., with dinner served at 6 p.m. The banquet will honor the 2024 inductees and award winners.

Receiving the J. Freeland Chryst Sports Achievement Award and induction into the Hall of Fame are the former Barbara Barr, who played basketball, tennis, and softball for McCaskey; Damien Henry, a member of the football, basketball, and track teams at McCaskey; Kyle Salyards, a swimmer for Hempfield; and Kris Wilson, who played football for McCaskey.

Pete Horn, McCaskey basketball coach and athletic director, will be honored as the 2024 George W. Kirchner Award recipient.

Other award winners are Dakota Nesbitt, named the Inspirational Athlete of the Year, and Ken Riley, the Volunteer of the Year. The 2024

Kieffer noted that organizers have put extra effort into the Faithful Give Sunday event this year. “I put more work into meeting with local pastors,” said Kieffer. “My prayer is that we would have more churches upholding these ministries on Sunday.” Kieffer added that a prayer guide will be available for those who wish to participate.

On Monday, Oct. 21, a breakfast will be held at Westminister Presbyterian Church, 2151 Oregon Pike, Lancaster, beginning at 7:30 a.m. There is no cost to attend the breakfast, but donations will be welcomed. Those who would like to attend the breakfast may register at https://

faithfulgive.org.

Last year, a celebratory picnic was held on the last day of the giving event, but this year, FaithfulGive is partnering with Blessings of Hope to hold a Giving Expo. The event will be held on Oct. 22 from 2 to 8 p.m. at the Wyndham Lancaster Resort and Convention Center, 2300 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster. Prizes for participating organizations will be given out at the Giving Expo. Prize categories are the Engaged Donor prize to benefit smaller organizations; the Show Me the Money prize for the largest unique donation; a prize package from Masterpiece Marketing, which will be awarded based on a written

submission; and the Just Keep Swimming award, which will be awarded by the board based on nominations by donors who submit a paragraph about why an organization has demonstrated wisdom, love, and persistent courage in challenging circumstances. Nominations for the Just Keep Swimming award are open at https:// faithfulgive.org/prizes/. Kieffer said that sponsorships have fully funded the 2024 prizes. “We have some non-cash prizes just to make it fun for the families (that attend),” said Kieffer.

Kieffer is hoping to build on last year’s success. “We really felt God opened people’s hearts (last year),” he said, noting that the team

worked well to deal with first-year hiccups. “(The team) had such a desire to serve one another and the community,” recalled Kieffer. “They worked through obstacles, and it was a pleasure.” Looking forward, he would like to top the 2023 event in both funds raised and service to participating ministries. “We are praying for $1 million this year,” he said, noting that last year checks were delivered to participants within a short time period. “This year, we promise to get them out for online donations within 30 days and 45 days for paper checks,” he stated.

Program to offer tutoring and tutor training

The University of Pennsylvania’s Graduate School of Education and tutoring company Thinkist have launched the Rural Pathways to Success Peer Tutor Program, which seeks to increase the number of students from rural districts who pursue further education after high school.

Supported by a grant from the U.S. Department of Education, the program offers high school students in grades 10 to 12 with at least a B average in their current math class the opportunity to receive training as peer tutors at no cost to families. The peer tutors engage in ongoing training while they assist middle and high school students who are struggling with math.

Registrations are also being accepted for students who would like to participate either as tutees or tutors during the spring session, which will run from Monday, March 3, to Sunday, June 1. The registration deadlines are Monday, Feb. 10, for tutors and Saturday, March 15, for tutees.

A limited number of spots are available. For more information, visit https:// pln.gse.upenn.edu/peer-tu tor-training-program.

Lancaster Catholic High School (LCHS) will hold a Day of Giving on Friday, Oct. 18. The 24-hour fundraising campaign will generate financial resources for the Lancaster Catholic Annual Fund, which fills the gap between revenue collected in tuition and the actual cost to educate the school’s students. This year’s Day of Giving fundraising goal is $300,000. Several donors have already given matching funds.

The program’s broader objective is to inspire students in rural areas of Pennsylvania to pursue further education and careers in teaching, fostering a cycle of educational motivation and achievement as well as building the teacher pipeline. Participants in the tutor training program not only gain tutoring experience, but they also earn college credits and a certificate upon completing the program.

For more details, visit https://tinyurl.com/ LCHSDayofGiving2024.

The fall session is scheduled to begin in mid-October, but youths who would like to receive tutoring may enroll through the end of October. The fall session will end on Friday, Jan. 17, 2025.
