MTHS Key Club nurtures hearts for service
BY JEFF FALK
Extracurricular activities provide students with an opportunity to apply what they’ve learned in the classroom. By introducing service to the equation, Key Club allows its student members to take that educational piece to the next level.
At Manheim Township High School (MTHS), Key Club is a vibrant, compassionate and stimulating club.
“Service is important, and we’re part of a community,” said Beth Krebs, who’s been MTHS’ Key Club adviser for two years.
“Service keeps us in the human realm. It’s not just about me, me, me. In order to make change, you have to know how and you have to have action with it. You’re working toward solutions. You can be a positive change agent for the future. It starts with service and self-reflection.”
A service organization, MTHS’ Key Club, which meets from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. on one Wednesday each month at the high school, is made up of 170 girls
and boys in grades nine through 12 and is affiliated with the Lititz Kiwanis Club and Key Club International. The Key Club is one of 65 extracurricular clubs at MTHS and one of just 13 MTHS clubs that is required to follow academic eligibility standards.
Members of MTHS Key Club donate at least seven and a half hours of community service per semester, or 15 service hours each year, and the students can view volunteer opportunities and track their hours in Schoology, an online program. Upon their graduation from MTHS, some Key Club members join the collegiate equivalent, Circle K.
“Our Key Club members are from all sections of the school community,” said Krebs. “They are students who want to make a difference, not only in their school community but also the local community and beyond. They see the value in service and connecting to the world. They’re really looking to build a better world. These students want to be actively involved in any way they
can. It’s broader than our high school or Manheim Township itself.”
As part of their service involvement, MTHS Key Club members volunteer at fundraisers, local fairs, carnivals, fun runs, events and the concession stands at school sporting events; as ball runners at athletic contests; and by picking up trash along local roadways, assisting teachers and helping other local service organizations.
“My favorite part is when students come back from volunteering and they tell me about being there, what they saw and what they learned,” said Krebs. “I get emails from the places where they volunteered, and they mention the students by name. I like the little ‘aha’ moments they have and watching them change and grow. We all need these positive moments.”
“Key Club means a lot to me,” said Gabbie Reedy, MTHS Key Club’s vice president. “It means a family of people who all share similar interests with me. I love serving and making
the world a better place, and Key Club helps me do that. I will forever be grateful to Key Club for giving me some of my best friends ever.”
Formed in 1925, Key Club International is one of the oldest scholastic service organizations in the country. There are nearly 230,000 students involved with Key Club across the country.
The Key Club at MTHS was founded on Nov. 7, 1946.
“We try to do as much as we can,” said Krebs. “There are so many things going on for our students. It helps build the community within our club, as well as a sense of belonging. I think that’s the biggest thing, feeling like you’re part of a bigger community.”
“I think overall, extracurricular activities take your education and apply it,” she continued. “It’s problem solving. It brings that extra level to the curriculum. It takes it past the four walls of the school. Students have to see that their actions have impact, and they’re making connections in the community.”

Todd Hostetter turned a hobby into a passion, and from that process grew knowledge. Now Hostetter wants to pass that knowledge on to others.
A published historian, a collector of Lancaster County tools and a volunteer at Landis Valley Village & Farm Museum, Hostetter is an expert in the ways of local craftsmen, planemakers - a tool used in the making of window sashes, door and wood trim and wood moldings - and, to a degree, Lancaster County history from the late 1700s to the mid1800s. His areas of expertise will be the focus of Hostetter’s upcoming presentation at the Manheim Township Public Library (MTPL).
“I’ve always been a teacher, and it’s just great to be able to share this information,” said Hostetter. “I’ve always actively been imparting knowledge. Being able to speak is easy for me, and it’s evolved. I’m a collector and I’m getting interested in different planemakers. You’re doing more recording and all of a sudden, you’ve got all this information. It doesn’t really cost anything to share this information.”
Hostetter will address a gathering of local history enthusiasts on Saturday, Nov. 2, at MTPL, 595 Granite Run Drive, Lancaster. The hourlong presentation, which is free to attend and does not require

Registration now open for Santa Run and Walk 5K
BY CATHY MOLITORIS
It’s only October, but Nancy Husser is already thinking about Santa. More specifically, she’s focused on the Santa Run and Walk, a 5K organized by the Manheim Lions Club. The race, which encourages participants to dress in Santa costumes or other holiday garb, will take place on Saturday, Dec. 7. It will begin in Manheim Square at 8:30 a.m.
“The Santa 5K is a fun event,” Husser said. “We start with Christmas music in the square all morning until the start of the race. The 5K course takes you through the west side of Manheim. We do encourage residents to come out and cheer the participants on.”
The course is relatively
flat, she shared, with a hill around the 2-mile mark. Both walkers and runners are encouraged to participate. “We have a range of participants from (ages) 6 to 76,” Husser said. “We will have bananas, water and chocolate milk for all finishers. Plus, this year we will have cash prizes for the top three overall male and female runners as well as medals for various age groups.”
The first Santa Run began nine years ago, coordinated by Reenie Ober, who at that time was the executive director of the Manheim Downtown Development Group. “She organized the first Santa 5K, and then the Manheim Lions Club has been sponsoring it every year since then,” Husser said.
Whether people are participating or attending as
spectators, the Santa Run will offer an entertaining experience, she said. “It is just a lot of fun to do something on a December morning and then to visit all the shops in town, have breakfast and just enjoy Manheim in general,” Husser shared. “It is just a fun community event in Manheim, and it just gets you into the Christmas spirit. Just come out and feel the Christmas spirit.”
The cost of registration for the race will increase after Friday, Nov. 1. People age 15 and older who register before Friday, Nov. 15, may receive a Santa suit or a quarter-zip pullover, and youths age 14 and younger may receive a long-sleeve T-shirt and a Santa hat if registration is received before that date. Race-day registration will

registration, will include a show-and-tell session and a question-and-answer period near the conclusion.
The event is being sponsored by the Manheim Township Historical Society.
“It’s designed to educate people about some history they probably aren’t aware of,” said Hostetter. “You’ll learn about carpenters 50 years ago, 100 years ago,
200 years ago. The tools these guys use today are totally different than the ones used in the 1800s. I give some perspective on what a planemaker is. I introduce some of the collections at Landis Valley.”

what I know and what I’ve learned. I like giving people a perspective on what tools were like in the 1800s. It’s come a long way.”
Manheim Township, Lancaster County and their residents played important roles in the evolution of tools in the United States.
“In this time frame (beginning in the 1700s), Lancaster was the largest inland city (in the country),” said Hostetter. “You had rapid growth in the mid-1800s, and things were changing. Hostetter gave several similar educational presentations at venues across Lancaster County in 2023, many in association with local historical societies.
“I’m a craftsman,” said Hostetter. “I have a full workshop. I have my own tool collection, and I also have my own useable tools. I’ve made some small tools and I’m also a woodworker, so that gives me an appreciation for how hard it was to build these tools.”
“I think a lot of people are already interested in history,” he added. “I think there’s a diverse group of interested parties who will show up. They just have

Music presentation set for All Saints’ Sunday
Grace Lutheran Church, 517 N. Queen St., Lancaster, will present a performance of John Rutter’s “Requiem” on Sunday, Nov. 3, at 10:30 a.m. As part of the church’s All Saints’ Sunday celebration, the church’s Senior
Choir will sing the piece, accompanied by a small instrumental ensemble. Written in 1985, Rutter’s “Requiem” was dedicated to the memory of the composer’s father, who had died the previous year. Rutter was inspired by Faure’s “Requiem.”
