Spreading A Pandemic Of Love By Ann Mead Ash

Looking back at the abrupt changes he dealt with last March when COVID-19 restrictions temporarily closed the state, Spencer Browne, now a rising senior at The Stone School in Lancaster, was philosophical. “When something as shocking as a pandemic happens, there are many different ways to (react),” noted Spencer. “I think it consumes a lot of people and they are stuck in shock about the world being so different they can’t do anything … but we saw it as an opportunity to help people who are in that stasis.” Spencer, along with his family, which consists of his parents, Jen and Sean Browne, and his brother, Jayden, home from college in Minnesota, joined forces with volunteers Michelle Simon and Deb Miller and fellow students

Jayna Ribner and Henry Willis to form the Lancaster chapter of Pandemic of Love. The grassroots, nonprofit organization connects those in need with those who have something to give. It has more than 650 volunteers nationally and, as of late June, had matched nearly 190,000 donors with those in need for $25.1 million in transactions. Pandemic of Love was founded in Florida by Shelly Tyglielski. “She started it for her community,” said Jen, who noted that the idea spread quickly and soon became a global network. Jen shared the story of the nonprofit’s founding with her family, and by late May, she had contacted Tyglielski through www.pandemic oflove.com. By early June, all the Lancaster volunteers had been trained via an online forum, and the Lancaster County chapter was ready to let the public know of its existence.

Jen lauded Spencer and Jayna and their expertise in social media for helping to get the word out. “I really credit the young volunteers with making this as successful as it’s been,” said Jen. “They know how to tag the right people. We are fortunate to have young volunteers who know what they’re doing.” Thanks to the volunteers’ hard work, by early July, the Lancaster Chapter had matched 30 donors with recipients. “What was shocking in the beginning is that I had so many donors who were interested,” recalled Jen, noting that at one point she had more donors than people in need. “I was so impressed with that,” she said. Jen explained that Pandemic of Love focuses on putting together the puzzle pieces of donors and recipients. “We look at what someone wants to give and try to connect people who are a good fit See Pandemic Of Love pg 3

Planning A Successful Food Truck Event COBYS To Offer Free Online Educational Classes When the Mountville Fire Company (MFC) reluctantly canceled its annual carnival in May, it turned to food trucks to make up the lost revenue. “Food - that’s what a lot of people come (to the carnival) for,” related Peter Taraborelli, MFC public information officer and firefighter. Due to the short notice and the safety guidelines in place at the time, the food truck event included primarily carnival vendors and was operated as a drive-through. Still, the turnout was

encouraging. “We wound up having a successful event. We raised $13,000,” Taraborelli said. The 2019 carnival generated $18,000, so MFC opted to host a second food truck event in July to make up the shortfall. “We wanted to capitalize on the fact that people were still bored, stuck local, still not going on vacation,” Taraborelli said. “We had time to plan, so we wanted to make sure we brought in some local favorites that people were asking about.” Unfortunately, rain on the first night and high heat and humidity on the second negatively impacted the proceeds from the July event. However, MFC is considering making a food truck fundraiser a regular part of its schedule beginning fall 2021. “People really do love food truck events,” Taraborelli remarked. “Lancaster County seems to be the mecca for some unique food trucks.” See Food Truck Event pg 4

Mountville Fire Company has held two food truck fundraisers this year, with the first one having a drive-through format. Food truck events can be fun neighborhood activities if organized and promoted well.

Local families now have an opportunity to receive support and educational services all without leaving their homes thanks to online programming being offered by the Family Life Education Department at COBYS Family Services, Lancaster. Among the virtual programs being offered is a kinship support program, which is taking place on Wednesdays from 7 to 8 p.m. through Aug. 19. The program is open to kinship caregivers - those who are raising a relative’s child. During the sessions, grandparents, aunts and uncles and others who have taken on the new role of caregiver can talk about topics specific to kinship care and network with other people in similar situations. “We are doing everything virtually to break down time barriers. These families are overwhelmed because they are taking care of children they were not expecting to take care of lovingly and open-armed,” said Abby Keiser, director of Family Life Services. “We are able to provide the services; they don’t have to bring their children to a building. They can even be in pajamas.” See COBYS pg 3

Abby Keiser, director, recently announced that the Family Life Education Department at COBYS Family Services, Lancaster, is offering free online support classes.

During the month of August, Keiser is offering free, individual online behavior consultations. To receive a free 30-minute video consultation, individuals may email education@cobys.org. “(We can) help them with specific behavior issues. For instance, if a child is having anxiety about going back to school, we can give them strategic skills to decrease their (fears),” stated Keiser. “If a child is showing aggressive behavior, (we try to) change that from negative to positive through reward charts. When you are kind, you get a sticker. They are more apt to be kind to get stickers.” Keiser emphasized that the program focuses on behavior management. “It is educational from a behavior management perspective. It’s not therapy,” she said. To register for any of the online support groups, readers may email education@cobys.org or leave a message at 717 -435-8139. “Anyone can be part of it, but they have to register because they get a Zoom invite,” Keiser said, adding that callers should leave a message since COBYS staff members are working remotely. Messages are checked on a regular basis. The free sessions are funded through Lancaster County Children and Youth Agency and Lancaster County Drug and Alcohol Agency.

She said that the virtual sessions enable COBYS to offer help on a broader scale, noting that anyone with a computer, phone or tablet can join in the Zoom meetings. “The pandemic has helped us understand how to be more efficient,” Keiser said. “This is better for the families because of their feelings of being overwhelmed. They don’t have to feed their children dinner before (the session) or get them dressed or drive to a building and figure out parking. They can opt to get information via Zoom.” A kinship seminar titled “Let’s Plan for School” will be offered on Saturday, Aug. 15, from 9:30 to 11 a.m. “We will talk about what school districts are doing and how to prepare your child for that,” Keiser said. “We will talk about what they do to organize their home space (for virtual learning), how to get their child ready, how to organize their schedule and have them think through everything.” In addition, video sessions for children can be found at www.cobys.org under the Family Life Education tab. One program by Barb Paynter, Family Life Education educator, features Wally and Molly, puppets that talk to children about current changes like why they must wear masks and why they have no playdates with their friends. The program is best suited for children ages 3 to 8.

been able to go back to work because their employer is not going to reopen, but also a lot of people (have) anxiety (that) is preventing them from going back,” she explained. Because there are only two chapters in the state, Jen and the other volunteers have fielded requests from tiny towns as well as from Philadelphia. They ask donors if they have a preference for keeping donations local. Spencer noted that Pandemic of Love is unusual because it is completely run by volunteers who do not actually handle the donations. “Pandemic of Love has no overhead costs,” he explained. “There’s no money involved in the matching process. People come to us and we document everything.”

for each other,” she said. “So if (someone can’t pay a) bill for $150 and we have someone who has $150 to give, I connect those and then they pay the bill directly.” In addition to utility bills, the organization has fielded requests for help with groceries, fuel, and medication. She said gift cards for those items are tremendously helpful. One recipient had a service dog that was ill and needed help with vet bills and to purchase special food. When a donor has food to give away, Jen turns to the caterer Scarlet Runner to help distribute it to the recipients. Even as the state has reopened, Jen said that many residents continue to be affected economically for a variety of reasons. “Some people have not

Food Truck Event from pg 1

Brandywine Medical & Kidney Specialists

While organizers cannot command good weather, folks who want to host food trucks whether one or a dozen - can take specific steps to make sure their event is beneficial to everyone involved. Danielle Landis is the event manager for New Holland eatery Lickity Split and the scheduler for its food truck. She is also a member of her homeowners association (HOA) team that arranges for food trucks to participate in popup events. “I’ve learned a lot about how to make it go well from both perspectives,” Landis said. Landis suggested that prospective food truck hosts

consider two things as they begin planning: Will the event be successful for the community itself, and what will make it a good event for the business? Hosts need to have some organizational skills, as a food truck event involves more than contacting a business and asking it to sell food on a residential street or in a parking lot. It is important to get an idea of what types of food will be of interest to neighborhood residents. For example, a dog treats vendor would not be relevant at an event in an apartment complex with a no-pets policy. Additionally, organizers need to make

sure to thoroughly spread the word. Yard signs, mailbox posters, Facebook groups and events, the NextDoor app, and local media are all ways to advertise a food truck event. With those plans at the ready, folks may reach out to vendors. The more specific the request, the better, Landis said, adding, “We have gotten a lot of messages from people who say, ‘Come out to our neighborhood. We have a lot of kids,’ (but that doesn’t tell us much).” Typically, a vendor needs to know the address where the event will be held, the number of houses or residents in an area, the desired dates and times, and what kinds of advertising will be used. It also helps to include a screenshot of the neighborhood with a pin where the truck will park so that vendors can see if the ground is level enough and if there is space for people to wait safely, Landis said. Other tips for hosting a food truck event: •Discuss the event with local officials - both municipal authorities and law enforcement - and obtain their support. •Always get permission from a property owner to park a truck. The Lickity Split truck will often

park in front of the contact person’s home. •Make sure the street or driveway is wide and straight so there is room for the truck. •Check for water/electric requirements. The majority of food trucks are self-contained, but some are not. •Provide a menu in advance so customers can plan ahead and build excitement for their order. •Consider offering preorders for safety. •Use duct tape or chalk to mark the ground so customers can stay 6 feet away from each other. •Ask customers to approach the window one at a time. •Masks should be worn by customers to protect food truck employees, who are required to wear masks. •Schedule enough people to help in areas like greeting guests, removing trash, and helping with parking. •Bring some fun to it. “This is such an awesome way for a community to build connection with each other,” Landis said. “My favorite part is seeing people engaging and connecting with each other, and that’s what people have been missing this summer. Food is always a great way to bring people together.”

group of 12 students will be supervised by a YGBW staff member, and a degreed teacher or educational specialist will be available for every two groups, ensuring a staff-to-student ratio of 1-to-8. After surveying more than 1,000 parents and guardians in Chester County, YGBW found that respondents want to ensure their children are provided with social opportunities and physical fitness, in addition to academic support. Given YGBW’s mission to support youth development, promote healthy living and encourage social responsibility, these are natural components of all YGBW programs and will be a focus of YGBW’s learning center programs. Registration opened on July 31 for families that have opted for a full virtual option through their school. As school districts make decisions and finalize their plans for the school year, YGBW is prepared to adapt its program to meet additional needs such as supporting those who do a mix of virtual and in-person learning and possibly offering learning centers at local schools. As school districts try to determine how to educate children safely in light of COVID-19, the YMCA of Greater Brandywine (YGBW) has announced that it will open learning centers with small staff-to-student ratios to support families when the school year begins. A provider of licensed child care, YGBW runs child care, preschool and prekindergarten programs, a state-licensed kindergarten program and several before- and after-school care programs. Since Chester County moved to the yellow phase of the state’s reopening plan in early June, YGBW has safely provided camp and child care to more than 1,000 children weekly using stable groups, as well as implementing health and safety guidelines recommended by the CDC, Department of Human Services, Chester County Health Department, American Academy of Pediatricians and Pennsylvania Board of Health. Just as YGBW has done with its child care and camp programs this summer, stable groups, where children are with the same small cohort of peers and staff daily to limit exposure to and the spread of COVID-19, will be implemented at YGBW learning centers. Each stable group will have a maximum of 12 students. YGBW ’s learning centers, available for students in kindergarten through sixth grade who are doing virtual learning, will provide full-day care from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Mondays through Fridays, with the option for care afterward until 6 p.m. Students will receive academic support, social enrichment, physical fitness activities and more. Wi-Fi will be provided with students bringing their own device and headphones. Students will have dedicated academic support to help them complete their schoolwork. Each

Virtual Garden Tour To Feature Local Inns

R061982

Inns, bed-and-breakfasts and boutique hotels across the country have recently launched an “Inn to Inn” virtual garden tour. Forty-two inns have pulled together to create a set of e-books that can be downloaded for free inspiration, a virtual pick-meup or an in-person discount. Arranged as a trio and dividing the participating inns into three regions, each book tells the story of the various gardens with hundreds of links to visuals and discounts. The regions include Northeast; Southern; and West, Midwest and Abroad, which includes Canada and Italy. A list local of properties participating in the Inn to Inn garden tour in the Northeast region are Wild Wisteria Bed and Breakfast, Chadds Ford; Historic Smithton Inn, Ephrata; Twin Pine Manor B&B, Ephrata; Carriage Corner Bed & Breakfast, Intercourse; King’s Cottage Bed and Breakfast, Lancaster; Brownstone Colonial Inn, Reinholds; and The Artist’s Inn and Gallery, Terre Hill. All of the participating properties are part of Still Inn Business, a preparedness campaign that launched this spring to help innkeepers stay visible in travel media and sustain industry optimism. The pro bono campaign has more than 300 members. For complete details, readers may visit www.prlog.org and search for “Inns Across the U.S. and Beyond Launch Virtual Garden Tour With Offline Discounts to Lure Travelers.”

The Giant Company announced on July 31 that more than $1 million was raised as part of its summer campaign in support of local Children’s Miracle Network (CMN) Hospitals. The campaign, which kicked off June 1, marks the highest fundraising effort for the organization in the history of the company. A partner of the nonprofit organization for almost 25 years, Giant has recently introduced several new ways for customers to support their local CMN Hospital beyond making a donation during checkout. Customers can now make donations by rounding up their purchase at self-checkout, donating CHOICE Rewards points and purchasing special reusable bags with a portion of each sale going to the charity. The company will continue raising funds for CMN Hospitals through the end of August. In March, to help provide assistance for the youngest members of the community during the coronavirus pandemic, Giant donated $250,000 to support COVID-19 mitigation efforts. Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP), Children’s National Hospital, Geisinger Janet Weis Children’s Hospital, Johns Hopkins Children’s Center and Penn State Children’s Hospital each received $50,000. The Giant Company is known as one of the top 15 fundraisers in the country for CMN Hospitals. Customers, team members and vendor partners have donated more than $48 million over the past 23 years in support of children’s health at local CMN Hospitals, including CHOP; Children’s National Medical Center in Washington, D.C.; Geisinger Janet Weis Children’s Hospital in Danville; Johns Hopkins Children’s Center in Baltimore; Penn State Children’s Hospital in Hershey; Pittsburgh Children’s Hospital; University of Virginia Children’s Hospital in Charlottesville, Va.; and WVU Medicine Children’s Hospital in Morgantown, W. Va.

The Atglen Public Library (APL) is participating in the PA Forward Star Library Program as part of the Pennsylvania Library Association’s 21st Century Literacies Initiative, PA Forward. This statewide initiative places the spotlight on Pennsylvania libraries and the important role that libraries have in the lives of citizens. APL will raise awareness of its programs and offerings that help Pennsylvania citizens improve their command of five types of literacy - basic, information, civic and social, health, and financial. These literacies are essential to students, parents, employees, consumers and citizens. As part of the program, logos on the libraries’ event flyers and marketing materials will identify which specific literacies the events support. PA Forward encourages all Pennsylvania libraries to use cohesive branding and marketing
