He will also talk about the law enforcement team that tracked down the paintings and the perpetrators. PROGRAM ON AGING

State Sen. Andy Dinniman (left) recently welcomed Donna and Matt Imbierowicz in Harrisburg after sponsoring a Senate resolution officially designating November 2019 as Carbon Monoxide Awareness Month in Pennsylvania.

Donna and Matt Imbierowicz of Coatesville, founders of the Carly Imbierowicz Foundation, recently presented 102 carbon monoxide detectors to the Cochranville Fire Department. The donation was part of the family’s ongoing effort to warn the public about the dangers of carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning. The donation was made on Nov. 22, the fifth anniversary of the date that Carly Marie Imbierowicz and her friend Daulton Pointek passed away from carbon monoxide poisoning in the vehicle they drove on the way home from a movie. A broken exhaust pipe allowed deadly carbon monoxide gas to enter the car through the passenger air vents. Both Carly and Daulton were students at Octorara Area High School. Donna explained that members of the fire company members will

distribute the CO detectors to those in need. “We are trying to get (detectors) in homes where people may not be able to afford them. I needed to decide how to get them out, and the best way was through the fire company, Donna said, noting that the detectors were donated by First Alert and True Value. “The (fire company members) were the first ones on the scene of Carly’s accident. It was important for us to donate them on that date, she noted. Accepting the donation on behalf of the fire company were Doug Lapp, president; Doug B. Lapp, captain; and Mike Harris, deputy chief. In addition, Donna and Matt recently traveled to Harrisburg to meet with state Sen. Andy Dinniman, who sponsored Senate Resolution 265, which officially designated November 2019 as Carbon Monoxide Awareness Month in Pennsylvania. “My husband and I make a tradition See CO Awareness pg 5

Resolve To Make A Difference In 2020 By Francine Fulton

With the arrival of the new year, many people have made resolutions to make positive changes in their lives. Representatives from local nonprofit organizations hope that people will resolve to become volunteers in 2020, giving the most valuable gift of all - the gift of time. The Volunteer English Program (VEP) in Chester County is seeking tutors to provide weekly, one-to-one

English language instruction for adult immigrants or refugees living in Chester County. A three-day, nine-hour tutor training workshop will be held at St. Francis-inthe-Fields Episcopal Church, 689 Sugartown Road, Malvern, on Thursday, Jan. 9; Monday, Jan. 13; and Tuesday, Jan. 14, from 9 a.m. to noon each day. Participants will be asked to pay a workshop fee for materials and refreshments. According to Terri Potrako, VEP executive director, tutors are asked to See Volunteers pg 3

Annual Consignment Sale To Support Peru Mission Fund By Dayna M. Reidenouer

The one thing that stays the same at the annual Nuts ‘N’ Bolts Consignment Sale hosted by the mission team at Middle Octorara Presbyterian Church (MOPC) is that it is always different, and the organizers never know what to expect. Last year’s event featured items from 18 vendors. One woman donated her late husband’s tools, said Dan Henry, who organizes the sale with his wife, Boni Henry. “Folks have been encouraged to bring ‘nuts and bolts’ types of items that they no longer need and would like to sell, Boni explained, listing tools See Consignment Sale pg 6

Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) will kick off its 100-year anniversary celebration in 2020 by bringing together volunteers to make 6,500 comforters on one day - Saturday, Jan. 18 - during an event known as The Great Winter Warm-up. Locally, the MCC East Coast office has set an additional goal of collecting 5,000 comforters during January, so events are scheduled before and after Jan. 18. The region has many MCC supporters who donate comforters throughout the year, including members of the Plain community, which spurred the added challenge. The Great Winter Warm-up January events will jump-start MCC’s supply of comforters, which are sent to people in crisis around the world each year. In 2018, MCC sent more than 53,000 comforters as a practical message of love and compassion in the name of Christ. East Coast supporters generated nearly 30,000 of those comforters for MCC’s ministries. During The Great Winter

Today, MCC provides humanitarian relief, encourages sustainable development and strengthens peace-building initiatives in more than 50 countries. Comforters and blankets have been part of MCC’s relief resources ever since the end of World War II.

Strategies For Achieving Goals January is a great time to set professional and personal goals. Setting goals can have a greater impact than people may know. Studies examining the importance of setting goals are few and far between, and some have even been revealed as fallacies after being accepted as authentic for years. But a 1979 study that asked newly minted Harvard MBA graduates about setting goals found that 13% had set goals. When interviewers followed up with survey participants a decade later, they found that the 13% who had set goals were earning, on average, twice as much as the 84% of participants who had set no

Warm-up events, volunteers are invited to help knot comforters as they celebrate MCC’s centennial. Participants will work together to combine handmade comforter tops, warm batting and sturdy backing fabric into warm, durable and beautiful comforters. The squares of fabric that make up the comforter tops have already been sewn together. Events have been scheduled at four locations in Lancaster County. Volunteers may gather on Thursday, Jan. 16, and Monday, Jan. 20, from 1 to 8 p.m. at Erisman Mennonite Church, 8 S. Erisman Road, Manheim. A light supper will be provided. More details are available by contacting Janet Runion Patton at 717-9264008 or jcpatton99@gmail.com. Helpers may also participate on Jan. 18 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at Material Resources Center, 517 W. Trout Run Road, Ephrata. A light lunch will be provided. More information is available from Betsy Kennel, who may be reached at 717-733-2847 or BetsyKennel@mcc.org.

others for support, insight, and motivation can be a great way to achieve goals, no matter what those goals are. 2. Individuals should set goals big and small. No goal is too small, and no big goal should be considered beyond reach. In fact, achieving small goals can provide motivation and inspiration along the way to realizing larger goals. Individuals should devise a onemonth plan, a six-month plan, and a 12-month plan for the year ahead. The one-year plan can serve as the big goal, while the one- and six-month plans can serve as small motivators and great ways to track progress en

route to achieving a larger goal. 3. People should write down why they are setting goals. People set goals for various reasons, and writing down the reasons they are pursuing their goals can serve as inspiration when challenges arise. For example, if someone aspires to change careers to spend more time with their family, writing that down can provide motivation to keep looking for opportunities when a job search stalls or feels fruitless. A new year is a great time to set goals. A handful of strategies can help people set their goals and keep them on track toward achieving them.

specific goals at all. While there is no universal formula for success, successful people often cite the importance of setting goals and how doing so was integral to their success. The following are some strategies that may help people achieve their goals in the years ahead. 1. People should make it a group effort. A 2013 study from a University of Connecticut researcher found that there is a high level of correlation between users’ exercise activities and their participation in these digital health communities. Such communities served as motivating factors for people aiming to live healthier lives. Relying on

Tutors from pg 1 to students already enrolled in VEP’s one-on-one tutoring program during which student-tutor pairs meet three hours a week at mutually convenient locations. Conversation Groups are also open to those who are on a waiting list to be matched with a VEP tutor, as well as those who are not currently active students. Most of the Conversation Groups attract six to eight participants each week, while the Easttown group gets up to 16 attendees. “They are meeting with people who speak several different languages; the common bond is English,” Potrako said. “The best way to learn English is to immerse yourself in the language.” Potrako reported that one student, Jenny, a recent immigrant from Colombia who is the mother of two young children, is utilizing many of VEP’s services. Jenny is a college graduate and former insurance and HR manager in her native country, but she hopes to master the English language in order to re-enter the workforce here. “Jenny is so excited to learn English that, in addition to meeting with her VEP tutor twice a week for one-to-one lessons, she also attends three different tutor-facilitated Conversation

Groups every week, totaling six hours or more of weekly English language immersion,” Potrako stated. “These groups give her the chance to converse with other new English language learners from all over the world as they practice their emerging language skills. “ For more details, including the group leaders’ contact information, readers may visit www.volunteerenglish.org and choose Students and then Conversation Group Opportunities. The Volunteer English Program (VEP) of Chester County, which offers free English language instruction to adult immigrants and refugees, recently named seven Conversation Group leaders as its 2019 Hamilton Tutors of the Year. Conversation Groups are weekly meetings held at local libraries where VEP students and community members come together to practice their English conversation skills under the guidance of the leaders. The honorees are Pierre Amy, Phoenixville Library group co-leader; John Argeseanu, Phoenixville Library group leader; Pattie Littlewood, Easttown Library group leader; Jane Palestini, West Chester Library group leader; Dr. Susan Jacques Pierson, Tredyffrin Library group leader; Karen Smith, Downingtown Library group leader; and Arlene Stevenson, group leader at the Central Presbyterian Church (CPC) in Downingtown. The Hamilton Award was established in 2013 to honor VEP’s founder, June Hamilton, and recognize tutors who “go above and beyond in fully embracing the VEP mission and

promoting the organization throughout the Chester County community.” “ While many of our tutors embody the spirit of this award, these seven individuals, in addition to serving as one-to-one tutors, have collectively donated nearly 500 hours of their time this past year to lead the regional Conversation Groups,” said Terri Potrako, VEP’s executive director. “Their dedication has enabled VEP to extend our engagement within the community beyond one-to-one instruction.” VEP currently offers six Conversation Groups that are free and open to the public. Meeting locations and times include the following: Easttown Library, 720 First Ave., Berwyn, Wednesdays, 10 to 11 a.m.; Phoenixville Library, 183 Second Ave., Phoenixville, Saturdays, 10 to 11:30 a.m.; Tredyffrin Library, 582 Upper Gulph Road, Wayne, Wednesdays, 7:15 to 8:45 p.m.; Downingtown Library, 122 Wallace Ave., Downingtown, Tuesdays, noon to 1 p.m.; CPC, 100 W. system, cause permanent brain damage or damage the heart, leading to life-threatening cardiac complications or death. Signs and symptoms include a dull headache, weakness or fatigue, dizziness, nausea or vomiting, shortness of breath, confusion, blurred vision and loss of consciousness. Residents are advised to take precautions against CO poisoning by installing carbon monoxide detectors along with smoke detectors in sleeping areas in their homes and checking their batteries twice a year. People should make a habit of opening the garage door before starting their cars, and they should never leave a car running with the door closed. Homeowners should not run generators in an enclosed space, such as the basement or garage; they should only be used outside away from doors and windows. Other precautions include ensuring that all fuel-burning appliances and engines, like space heaters, furnaces, charcoal

grills, fireplaces, portable generators, water heaters and woodburning stoves, are properly vented; keeping fireplaces in good condition by cleaning the chimney and flue every year; and

keeping vents and chimneys unblocked For more information about CO awareness and the foundation, readers may visit www.cmiawareness.org.

previously stored in sheds, garages, and basements; hunting clothes and supplies; yardwork and landscaping tools; small equipment; antiques; books; games; and puzzles as ideas of items to consign. Firearms will not be accepted. “This year, we are emphasizing collections such as baseball cards, old Sports Illustrated magazines, vintage jewelry, books, old toys, Hummel plates, coins, and a Park City pewter collection including a carousel,” she said. “I tell people I have no clue if (their item) will sell; just bring it and try it,” Dan added. The Hummel plates that will be offered in the sale were collected by MOPC member Joan Probst, who liked the images of children and animals. Probst was careful to retain the paperwork guaranteeing the plates’ authenticity, and she may even have some of the original packaging. Probst started her collection nearly five decades ago. “They were back when my kids were small, and my baby’s 50,” she related. The sale will be held on Saturday, Jan. 11, from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. at MOPC, 1199 Valley Road, Quarryville. Saturday, Jan. 18, has been set as the snow date. In contrast with craft shows, vendors do not need to be present at the event, although they are welcome to attend. “One year, a guy was here tying flies,” Boni recalled. Dan related that when Dick Keene brought in a collection of hunting decoys, he stayed for the day. “He had a good time talking to people,” Dan said. Items may be dropped off at MOPC between 4 and 8 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 10. Readers may also contact Boni at 717-4051113 or bohphen@outlook.com to schedule an alternate drop-off time. Boni would like potential consignors to contact her regardless so that she and Dan can plan effectively to accommodate everyone. When items are sold, the consignor will receive 80% of the sale price. The other 20% will go to the Peru Mission Fund. Items may also be donated to the consignment sale, with all of the proceeds going to the Peru Mission Fund. MOPC tries to send mission teams to Tamshiyacu, Peru, at least once a year to work with a sister congregation there. The teams also provide money for medical supplies, and they have contributed to water sanitation efforts in the rural village. The Henrys expressed their hope that community members will support the Nuts ‘N’ Bolts Consignment Sale by contributing items and by shopping. “It’s fun - something to do in January,” Boni said. “It’ll cure your cabin fever,” Dan added. For more information about the Nuts ‘N’ Bolts Consignment Sale, readers may contact Boni at the aforementioned phone number and email address or call MOPC at 717-786-3402.

Park Improvements from pg 1 State Rep. Dan Williams recently announced that a $40,000 grant has been awarded to Parkesburg Borough to be used for improvments at Minch Park. Prior to the awarding of the grant, Williams spoke with members of Parkesburg’s newly created Parks and Recreation Commission this summer about a growing list of projects for Minch Park. The grant, awarded by the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources through its Community Conservation Partnerships Program, will go toward the renovation of a comfort station and pedestrian walkways in the park, as well as establishing ADA

access and funding landscaping work, project signage and other related site improvements. The Community Conservation Partnerships Program assists local governments, recreation organizations and conservation organizations with funding for projects related to conservation, parks and recreation, including conservation of open space, river conservation and river access, as well as the planning, acquisition and development of public parks. More information can be found by visiting www.dcnr.pa.gov and choosing Communities and then Grants. Road, Gordonville, each Wednesday at 9 a.m. from October through the end of the school year to pack the bags of food to be sent home on weekends with children who attend Salisbury or Paradise elementary schools. Lifeways for Kids provides sustainable, supplemental food for area students. Currently, the program serves 54 students at Paradise Elementary and 36 at Salisbury Elementary. Lapp and Kurtz, a retired nurse, work to keep the food they provide at a certain nutritional standard. Many of the items included in the pack come from the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank and others from local grocery stores. Regularly included items may be macaroni and cheese, microwavable meals, soup, noodle dishes, juice, applesauce, granola bars, crackers and cheese, popcorn, and hot chocolate. Recently, the program has expanded to include more than food. “In the fall at the end of October, we give out hygiene kits containing a new towel, a hairbrush, a bar of soap, a container of shampoo, toothpaste, and a toothbrush,” said Lapp. Gesturing to a nearby table stacked high

with colorful blankets, she added, “At Christmas, we give a fuzzy blanket and a pair of sweatpants (to children in need).” Working closely with PVSD social workers and nurses, the program also supplies a closet at each school with clothing that the nurse tells Lifeways is needed, such as underwear and socks. As the program coordinates with the PVSD social workers, Lifeways will be helping the district to reach out to the 30 students in the school district who are considered homeless. “When social workers (prepare to visit a home), they can pull items the children need from that closet,” said Lapp, who noted that at one school, a room is being made available to hold clothing and bedding. “We will work alongside them because the programs are similar, and we can brainstorm together,” she said. Volunteers who pack the food spend about an hour a week putting packs together and preparing for the next week’s work. “It does not take long to pack,” said Lapp, who noted that individuals who would like to volunteer may just come to Ridgeview Mennonite at See Feeding Children pg 9

Program Brings Support To Expecting Moms A group of moms-to-be met at La Comunidad Hispana (LCH) in December as part of the Centering Pregnancy program. The recent meeting was the current cohort’s second session, the 16- to 18-week appointment. The women, currently in their first trimester, enjoyed holiday music and crafts. LCH kicked off Centering Pregnancy in July 2019 and is currently providing this model of group prenatal care to approximately 25 women. The social component of the prenatal visit is intertwined with the two-hour group health appointment, which includes vitals checks for mothers and babies, consultations with the women’s health team, and informal presentations from LCH staff specialists in nutrition, mental health, and community resources. Teri Noone, LCH certified nurse midwife, co-facilitates the group appointments along

LOST BLACK DOG! Our baby girl, Paisley has been missing from our home since 7am 12/17/19. We have searched everywhere and are hopeful she may have been taken in by someone who may not realize she is missing. Paisley is about 40lbs with a black coat and white chest and paws. She is so loving, yet very timid. We would do anything to have her home. Please call Laura Cresta if spotted or found. We are so desperate to have her back home. She makes our family whole, truly.
