Making a resolution to volunteer BY FRANCINE FULTON

Unlike a typical resolution that can quickly be forgotten, a commitment to volunteer in the new year is a decision that can make a lasting impact in the community. Many local nonprofit organizations are in need of volunteers who are

willing to help them continue their important work. Among the agencies in need of volunteers is Compeer Chester County, which pairs people living with mental health conditions with volunteer friends from the community. A Compeer volunteer is asked to make a commitment to meet with his or her friend for See Volunteer pg 2

There was no shortage of good news that was shared in the Community Courier in 2023. Readers were introduced to charitable people in the community, and they learned about special events and activities by nonprofit organizations. In 2023, readers met Chester County resident Natanya Sortland who, despite her fear of heights and visual impairment, annually takes part in Eye Drop, a fundraiser for VisionCorps where

participants rappel 10 stories down from the roof of the Holiday Inn in downtown Lancaster to raise funds for the organization. A team of Chester County residents joined Sortland for Eye Drop 2023 during which S o r t l a n d d re s s e d a s L a d y L i b e r t y to s y m b o l i z e h o w VisionCorps has given her the freedom to live a normal life despite being visually impaired Another local woman who was spotlighted in 2023 was 2nd Lt. hristiana residents and library patrons now have a place to rest and read thanks to the efforts of Sawyer Johnson, who built and installed two benches at the Moores Memorial Library in Christiana as part of his Eagle Scout service project. Sawyer, a member of Atglen Boy Scout Troop 20, completed the construction work on a weekend last October, along with the help of family members, friends and fellow troop members. “The library told me that a week or two after the benches were installed, they were used on (Halloween),” Sawyer shared. “Parents were able to sit down and watch their kids trick-or-treat, so the benches are already being used.”

a minimum of four hours each month for one year. “We are still in need of both male and female volunteers, as we have a waitlist for both,” said Donna Kueny, program manager. According to Compeer, a person with mental health challenges can benefit from time spent with a friend, which has been shown to increase self-esteem and reduce loneliness. Compeer volunteers, who receive training, may choose their friends based on shared interests and geographic location. Compeer volunteers and friends may meet for coffee or dinner or attend a sporting event. With the end of the pandemic, Compeer Chester County has returned to offering group events during the year. “We have returned to in-person events, and in 2023, we had a pizza and bowling party, a summer picnic and a holiday luncheon,” noted Kueny. The Adult Tutoring Program of Chester County Opportunities Industrialization Center (OIC), headquartered at the Chester County Library in Exton, is currently seeking volunteer tutors to help individuals from other countries with their English language skills. Tutors are required to commit to working with a student three hours per week , which is usually covered in two 90-minute sessions. “Tutor pairs can work face-to-face in the library or other public locations or virtually via Zoom, based on the needs of those involved,” explained Debbie Rikess, program coordinator. Rikess explained that the majority of students on the OIC waiting list are English as a Second Language (ESL) learners. Others are GED/ A dult B asic Education students. “When a student comes into the program,

Rescue (LDAR) has a mission to rescue and find permanent homes for homeless, abused or unwanted animals. Most animals are cared for in foster homes until their forever families can be found while some dogs reside at the LDAR shelter in Avondale. “We can always use fosters for our dogs and cats. This allows us to rescue even more animals,” said volunteer Lisa Newton, who is in charge of the LDAR cat rescue program. “Other ways people can help us is to collect food and supplies for the rescue through church or activity organizations.” Items needed by the rescue include dog food, cat food, cat litter, flea and tick medications, kitten formula, dog treats, toys, blankets and cleaning supplies. She added that volunteer dog walkers are also needed at the LDAR kennel. For more details, visit www .luckydawganimalrescue .com or email luckydawg ar@gmail.com.

A Tammany statue also enjoys a place of prestige across from Philadelphia City Hall. The edifice itself is topped by the image of Tamanend’s English “brother” Penn. Tammany also serves as a silent sentinel to the heroes of Gettysburg. New York’s 42nd Volunteer Infantry Regiment - the Tammany Regiment - fought heroically on the infamous Pennsylvania battlefield. The image of Tammany stands atop a monument to these men who helped defeat slavery. Tammany became a model of aspiration after the American Revolution. Patriotic Tammany societies proliferated around the nation. The Tammany Society’s constitution used in 1790 reads: “It shall connect in the indissoluble bonds of Patriots Friendship, American Brethren of known attachment to the Political Rights of Human Nature and the Liberties of this Country.”Yes, Tammany, like Columbia in an earlier United States, was viewed as a personification of the ideal of human liberty. James Gaffney brought Chief Tammany to American professional sports. In 1912, he purchased the National League’s Boston Rustlers, renaming the team the Boston Braves to honor Tammany. He added the Lenni Lenape’s image to the team’s uniforms. Babe Ruth played for the Boston Braves in 1935 and last played wearing the face of the patron saint of America on his sleeve. Tammany later

adorned Braves uniforms as the franchise moved to Milwaukee and then Atlanta. “ The American ideals of human right to ‘life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness’ spring chiefly from original American sources and were developed on American soil for untold centuries before Europeans arrived on this continent,” historian and biographer of early Americans Joseph White Norwood wrote in his 1938 book “The Tammany Legend.” “These ideals are therefore so distinctively native to the soil that they should be known as the first Americans knew them, by a name that completely symbolizes them. This name is Tamanend.” Information gathered for this article was gleaned from an essay by Kerry J. Byrne written in June 2023 and www.hiddencityphila.org.

Submitted by Leona Baker, Historical Society of Salisbury Township A Native American chief shaped 200 years of American history and was celebrated as the patron saint of the new nation. Tamanend, a 17th-century Lenni Lenape chief, was a friend and ally of English Quaker William Penn, who settled the region we know as Pennsylvania (Penn’s Woods) in 1682. First honored as a patron saint by Washington’s troops, Tamanend, also referred to as Tammany, soon became patron saint of the whole American army. “Tammany ... played a prominent role in the establishment of peaceful relations among the Native American tribes and the English settlers who established Pennsylvania,” reported www .DelawareTribe.org, the official website of the Delaware tribe of Native Americans. According to author Leon Nelson Nichols, John Adams wrote to future first lady Abigail about Tammany, saying, “The people here have sainted him and keep his day.” After inspiring American patriots in the 18th century, Tammany shaped American politics in the 19th century and was celebrated in American popular culture well into the 20th century, most notably on the uniforms of professional sports teams. “During the Revolutionary War ... stories of a patriotic and wise Indian chief ... circulated through the Colonies, (taking) a strong hold upon the minds of the soldiers,” Nichols wrote. The first original American opera, “Tammany: The Indian Chief,” was performed at John Street Theatre in Manhattan in 1794. Tammany appears in James Fenimore Cooper’s classic 1826 American novel, “The Last of the Mohicans.” A statue of Tammany keeps watch over the campus of the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md.

A groundbreaking ceremony was held in July by members of Freedom Life Church at a vacant property along Route 41 and Zook Road in West Sadsbury Township. The ceremony officially launched the construction of a new church facility. The building plans include an auditorium with 630 seats, a gymnasium, an indoor playground, six classrooms, a café and meeting spaces. The church hopes to move into the new facility next summer. The Parkesburg Lions C lub also held several events, including its annual Halloween Parade, holiday lighting contest and Christmas soldier project, collecting items for military personnel. The club also dedicated several benches in the community that it earned through the TREX recycling program.

May at the library. Sawyer obtained the sale items from a great-uncle, who had passed away and left a massive collection that included more than 4,000 DVDs and thousands of books. Sawyer raised $1,000 at the sale and obtained the rest of the money from family members and friends. Leftover books and DVDs were donated to other organizations. “Someone we knew offered to take them and distribute them among a variety of libraries and other places throughout several counties, so they found a home,” Steve noted. S aw ye r s a id t h at he learned a lot about construction while completing the project and credited his fellow Scouts for their hard work. “We ran into a speed bump when we were putting the first bench together, but (for the second bench) we found a way to make the holes in the lumber line up

and fit together perfectly,” he stated, adding, “When it comes to working on a project, our troop is good at getting the job done.” Saw yer, 15, who is a homeschooled student, has several more merit badges and rank requirements to complete before earning Eagle Scout, which is the highest rank in Boy Scouting. “ When I do my Eagle board of review with the Chester County Boy Scout Council, I have to present an Eagle binder of my project and everything I did,” he said. “I’m hoping to get Eagle before I turn 16.” scan this code for more local news townlively.com
