As 2023 begins and people make New Year’s resolutions, area nonprofit organizations hope that local residents will resolve to donate their time and talent as a way to make a positive difference in the community.
Compeer Chester County, a nonprofit organization that pairs people
living with mental health challenges with volunteer friends from the community, is in need of volunteers.
Participants are asked to meet with their friends for four hours each month for at least one year.
Compeer volunteers are paired with individuals of the same gender and geographical area who share common interests. “We need both

“Wow” was the word that Parkesburg Lions Club president Robin McKenna used when describing the entries in this year’s Lions Club annual Holiday Decorating Contest.
“There were a lot of wonderfully decorated houses in Parkesburg this year, which made judging very
difficult,” said McKenna, noting that judging took place on Dec. 16. “The criteria used to judge were creativity, attractiveness, theme and design.”
The first-place winners were Todd and Debby Allen. Their display included a lighted walkway; an illuminated manger scene; snowflakes projected onto the house; and figures that lit up, including angels, a
toy soldier and Santa Claus.
“The beautifully decorated twin homes were made to look as one,” McKenna explained. “The judges loved the Nativity scene, and (the home) had the perfect amount of lights and decorations. The couple were thrilled to win, and said that Todd’s family have loved decorating their home for years and were winners years ago. “

Decorating Contest
The home of the Streett family, which featured decorated trees and illuminated figurines, earned second place. “The colorful assortment of trees catches your eye for sure,” McKenna said.
“Lights could even be seen in the backyard. (The display) was quite lovely.”
Third place was awarded to Casey and Chris Wyatt, whose home was lit by spotlights. A tree in the front yard was also decorated with lights and ornaments.
“(This home was) a classic beauty with red lights under the house overhang, (which gave) it a glow,” McKenna commented. “The judges loved the grapevine reindeer in front as well.”
Two honorable mentions were given, one to the Mellinger home decorated all in white, and the other to Steve Kroninger. “(The Kroniger) home had many different decorations, including the tiniest seesaw, Scooby-Doo (and other characters),” McKenna noted.
McKenna said that club members wanted to thank the Parkesburg community for its participation in this year’s contest. “It really is fun to see the festive holiday lights and decorations of our town. We plan to do the contest again next year,” McKenna said.
The Parkesburg Lions Club, which has a motto of “We Serve,” is always looking for new members. The club meets on the second and fourth Thursdays of the month at 6:30 p.m. at the Parkesburg Baptist Church, 103 West St., Parkesburg.
Information about the club and activities can be found by searching for “Parkesburg Lions Club - New and Improved” on Facebook. For more information, email parkesburg lions@gmail.com or send a message on the Facebook page.

Phase one, which included modifications to the gymnatorium of the former Paradise Elementary School, was completed in early 2022. Now, a pre-bid meeting for contractors interested in bidding on phase two has been set for Thursday, Jan. 5, at 2 p.m. at The Factory. Phase two will include addressing the need for Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA) compliant bathrooms, repositioning the stairs that lead from the entry to the loft, and raising the ceiling height in the kitchen.
Phases two and three of the project will be funded by separate Redevelopment Authority Community Development Block Grants (CDBG). Nagle explained that the winning contractor will need to comply with prevailing wage requirements and be familiar with paperwork and regulations included with that qualification. Depending
on the bid received, alternate items the contractor might bid on include a separate ADA-compliant bathroom and a chairlift to make the gymnatorium stage more accessible. Bids must be received by Thursday, Jan. 26, with work completed by May of 2023.
According to Nagle, phase three will focus on the front entryway of the 1927 building, which features white columns associated with schools constructed in that time period. Although the building has been recognized for its historical significance, it has false windows in the front. “(Phase three) will clean up the front entry to make it accessible and safe,” said Nagle, who added that a bricked-in archway on the east side of the building will be reopened to create an ADA-accessible entrance. Nagle said that there is an identical bricked-in entrance on the west side and that he has been told originally one entrance was for boys and the other was for girls.
After working with CityScapes Commercial Roofing of New Holland on a previous contract, Nagle said the organization is hoping to work once again with an area contractor. “We had a phenomenal relationship with CityScapes,” reported Nagle. “We were able to do some cool things with CityScapes because they captured the heart of our mission and what we’re about.”
Contractors who would like to know more about the bid process may call 717-687-9594. Readers who would like to know more about The Factory may visit www.thefactory ministries.com or search for “The Factory Ministries” on Facebook.
Church Donates Books To Library
The Episcopal Church of the Ascension in Parkesburg recently donated four books to the Free Library of Parkesburg, part of the Chester County Library System. The books are “Badger’s Parting Gifts” by Susan Varley, “The Tenth Good Thing About Barney” by Judith Viorst, “Nana Upstairs, Nana Downstairs” by Tomie dePaula, and “Grandpa’s Tent” by Mary Davila and Sarah Kinney Gaventa.
The books were chosen to help parents and children talk about death. The church decided to make the donation after a neighbor died, leaving behind his wife and two young children. The books are available for checkout at the Parkesburg Free Library.

From The Attic: The WCTU Coverlet
Submitted by Leona Baker, president of the Historical Society of Salisbury Township, with inputbyRitaWert
Several years ago, Bud Zimmerman, a wellknown businessman in the Gap/Christiana area, donated a coverlet once owned by his grandmother to the Historical Society of Salisbury Township. The design featured more than 50 hand-embroidered circles, each consisting of up to 35 hand-stitched names in a pie-shaped formation. The only thing Bud knew about the coverlet was that a Gap organization called the WCTU had created it in the late 19th or early 20th centuries. How Bud’s grandmother ended up with the coverlet was unknown.
The center circle of signatures contains the words “Gap WCTU ... Mrs. M. Coates, Pres.” While there may be a few in the community today who can remember what those letters stand for, research was needed to discover more about this coverlet and why it had been constructed.
The Women’s Christian Temperance Association (WCTU) was founded in 1873. Believing that women are morally superior, the organization operated on the premise that alcohol and other drugs were the cause of society’s larger problems. The goal was “to protect the morals of the family through total abstinence of ... (all addictive substances).” Within 10 years, there were more than a thousand local affiliates nationally, called “unions.”
Local chapters were largely autonomous but linked to state and national headquarters. The association grew to become the largest and
most influential women’s group in the 19th century. Very soon, branches had spread throughout the world.
Believing that social problems were interconnected, eventually the movement would embrace prison and labor law reform.
Member groups eventually added the right for women to vote in order “to protect the home and cure society’s ills.” It is believed that the prohibition of alcoholic beverage sales, enacted in 1919 as the 18th Amendment to the Constitution of the United States, was the direct outcome of WCTU lobbying. It prohibited the making, transport and sale of all alcoholic beverages in the United States.
According to Bud, the Gap chapter encouraged people of the township to pay to have their names embroidered on squares in the pie design of the coverlet. People paid 5 cents to have their name within the circle and 25 cents for their name to be on the perimeter of the circle. The squares eventually were joined together to form the coverlet. The finished project was then auctioned off, financing the local chapter’s participation in the national movement to promote abstinence from drinking alcohol and other reforms in the area

male and female volunteers from (all) areas of the county,” noted Donna Kueny, program manager. She noted that the pairs can share activities such as meeting for lunch or coffee.
To learn more, contact Kueny at 610-436-4445 or dkueny@mhp hope.org. More information, including a volunteer application, is also available at www.compeerchesco.org.
Lucky Dawg Animal Rescue (LDAR) is also in need of volunteers.
LDAR is a foster-based rescue, but it also has a property where dogs are temporarily housed until they find their forever homes. In addition, some cats rescued by the organization but not in foster care can be adopted from Petco, located in the Bradford Plaza, 680 Downingtown Pike, West Chester.
“(We need volunteers to help with) walking dogs at the kennel in Avondale and assisting with the cats at Petco,” said Mary Bauer, LDAR founder. “We are also always looking for fosters for cats and dogs.”
For details and to complete a volunteer application, visit www.lucky dawganimalrescue.com/volunteer.
The Volunteer English Program (VEP) in Chester County is seeking tutors to provide weekly, one-toone English language instruction for adult immigrants or refugees living in Chester County. Prospective tutors are invited to attend a virtual tutor training workshop on Tuesday, Jan. 24; Thursday, Jan. 26; and
frompg 1
Tuesday, Jan. 31, from 9 to 11 a.m. each morning. Complete details are available at www.volunteer english.org/tutors/tutor-training -workshop.
Tutors are asked to make a oneyear commitment to the program. Tutors and students may meet virtually or in person at libraries or local coffee shops. A teaching background or knowledge of another language is not necessary to become a tutor. For more information, visit www .volunteerenglish.org or www.face book.com/VolunteerEng or call Terri Potrako, VEP executive director, at 610-918-8222.
Another agency seeking volunteer tutors to help individuals from other countries with their English language skills is the Adult Tutoring Program of Chester County Opportunities Industrialization Center (OIC). No experience is necessary, but volunteers must have a bachelor’s degree.

Church Sale Will Benefit Mission In Peru
BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALD
Middle Octorara Presbyterian Church, 1199 Spring Valley Road, Quarryville, is gearing up for its annual Nuts ‘N’ Bolts sale on Saturday, Jan. 14, from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. Local vendors will sell items from power tools to dollhouses at the
event, which will serve as a fundraiser for Middle Octorara Presbyterian’s humanitarian efforts in Peru. This year will mark the ninth annual Nuts ‘N’ Bolts sale at the church, a tradition that was started by church member Boni Henry. When the sale first began,
ERAP Eligibility Guidelines Updated
On Dec. 12, Chester County’s Emergency Rental Assistance Program (ERAP) released new eligibility guidelines to support individuals and families facing courtordered eviction, a utility shutoff, or a need for security deposits to secure permanent affordable housing. Since the start of ERAP, Chester County has allocated more than $30.5 million for nearly 3,000 households in need of emergency rental and utility assistance, with $13 million remaining to support individuals and families who meet the new guidelines.
Chester County’s ERAP program was introduced in January 2021, funded by the U.S. Department of the Treasury and the Pennsylvania Department of Human Services, to help cover emergency rental and utility bills for those who were severely impacted by the pandemic. Chester County’s Department of Community Development partners with four organizations - Human Services Inc., Friends Association, Brandywine Valley Active Aging, and Oxford Area Neighborhood Services - to administer and allocate the local funds.
To access Chester County’s ERAP, call 211 or 866-964-7922 and follow prompts 2, 2 and 2; text your zip code to 898-211; email info@211sepa.org; or speak with an agent at https://211sepa.org.

its primary goal was to vend items that would appeal to conventionally masculine interests such as sporting equipment and power tools.
“I remember thinking that there were all of these things for women to go to, but we needed something more geared towards men and their interests,” said Henry, who’s spent much of her life in close proximity to men and their hobbies. Henry had no sisters growing up; she played with the neighborhood boys and later had three sons of her own.
The first sale was a success and received positive feedback from the community. As the Nuts ‘N’ Bolts sale grew each year, it came to include items beyond snow blowers and screwdrivers; attendees of the event can now peruse anything from birdhouses to vintage collectibles. “It isn’t exclusive,” said Henry. “There’s something for everyone, and the whole family will enjoy it.”
Twenty percent of the profits made by vendors will benefit Middle Octorara Presbyterian’s Peru Fund, which is used for the church’s various projects to improve the living conditions of those residing in the village of Tamshiyacu. These projects include sending medical supplies, completing construction and repair jobs and installing equipment to help residents of the village meet their basic needs. “Every year there are so many wonderful people who participate in the sale and end up donating all of their proceeds to the fund,” said Henry. “The people buying items at the sale are always very generous as well.” To become a vendor, call Henry at 717405-1113 or send an email to bohphen@outlook.com.
Middle Octorara Presbyterian first became involved with mission trips to Peru in 2005 and sent a group of volunteers to Tamshiyacu every year until 2019. Groups from the church helped to construct a building that serves as a school, church and pastor’s residence and installed a water tank to provide locals with fresh drinking water. Although the COVID-19 pandemic has prevented volunteers from continuing their annual trips in recent years, the church continues to send money and supplies to the village. The church hopes to resume sending volunteers this coming summer.
