Burns Night To Support Historic Church By Marcella Peyre-Ferry

Burns Night, an evening of everything Scottish in honor of poet Robert Burns’ birthday, will take place on Saturday, Jan. 25, at Historic Beale Manor in Parkesburg. The Octorara Covenanter Presbyterian Foundation will host the event. The evening will begin at 6 p.m. with a social time to fiddle music by Tom Knapp, founder of local Celtic band Fire in the Glen. Piper Thompson McConnell will also provide music throughout the evening and will lead the haggis ceremony. Haggis, a traditional Scottish dish made from a sheep’s stomach, will be part of the evening meal. It will be carried in as part of a procession that is accompanied by a reading of Burns’ “Address to the Haggis. “People love (the ceremony). It’s kind

of a grand thing, said Donna McCool, treasurer and event committee co-chair for the Octorara Covenanter Presbyterian Foundation. A full dinner will include a selection of Scottish foods, as well as haggis. After dinner, Clayton Margerum will present Burns’ narrative poem “Tam o’Shanter. There will also be toasts and readings of Burns’ works. As the evening draws to a close, the entire group will join in singing Burns’ songs, ending with the classic “Auld Lang Syne. Visitors are encouraged to get into the spirit of the evening by wearing their tartans, but it is not required. The third annual Burns Night is a fundraising event to help maintain and preserve historic Octorara Covenanter Presbyterian Church. Crisis Housing To Open In Paradise

By Francine Fulton

By Ann Mead Ash

On a chilly morning in November 2019, Adam Nagle, director of The Factory Ministries in Paradise, posed a question to a group of community members preparing to tour the crisis housing facility still under construction in the basement of the Together Community Center. “If you have a mother, a 12-year-old girl, and a 16-year-old boy, and they are facing homelessness, where can you send them for help that they can keep the family together? asked Nagle. Local Wedding Spotlights

The spirit of Christmas was evident during the 2019 holiday season as local charities, churches and other organizations took part in charitable community service projects. Oxford Presbyterian Church (OPC) once again provided the ingredients for Christmas dinners for families in need in Oxford and the surrounding community, a tradition that goes back 60 years. As part of the annual effort, food boxes were given to 137 families. For two months prior to the distribution, congregation members, local schools and Cub Scout Pack 213 collected canned goods to fill the boxes. Additionally, local merchants provided financial support. The Chester County Food Bank donated all of the turkeys to See Holiday Cheer pg 4

ARRIVING LATE?

Thanks to the efforts of local individuals and organizations, veterans who reside at the Coatesville Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Center had some extra holiday cheer this Christmas. The 10th annual Christmas Gift Wrapping Extravaganza, organized by David’s Drive 831 (DD831), was held on Dec. 13 at the VA’s Great Hall. During the event, approximately 200 volunteers wrapped 1,000 boxes that were distributed to veterans in need. The boxes were filled with various necessities, such as shampoo, toothbrushes and reusable water bottles, as well as puzzle books, CDs and snacks. The collection of items was valued at $28,000, according to David Turner Sr., DD831 founder and president. The Turner family started DD831 following the sudden passing of David Turner Jr. from a suspected cardiac arrhythmia in December 2009. David worked at the Coatesville VA and had a desire to help veterans in need. “David’s wish was to help veterans that needed assistance at the VA when he worked here. He never had the chance to help them, so when he passed, we decided to continue his wish of helping veterans,” Turner said. “It’s a community organization, and David guides us through.” As part of a separate effort that is in its third year, Hellertown resident Andrea Feher organized a gift drive via Facebook - collecting hundreds of gifts for the 72 veterans in the Community Living Center and Hospice at the Coatesville VA. The gifts were delivered on Dec. 3 during a luncheon event. Feher worked closely with the VA staff in the long-term residential care units to find out what the veterans would like to receive. She then reached out to

her donation network to supply the blankets, jackets, scarves, gift cards and personal care items that were requested. The effort began a few years ago when Feher was actively looking for a charity to support for the holidays and learned about the Coatesville VA. After contacting the VA, Feher listed the needed items on the Hellertown and Doylestown Community Facebook pages. She noted that the community members are so eager to participate each year that they begin making inquiries about the project in October and November. Feher stated, “(People ask), ‘What are we doing this year? Do we have a list yet?’” In addition, Transportation Management Association of Chester County (TMACC), a nonprofit corporation that oversees transportation needs among organizations and municipalities within Chester County, delivered hundreds of gifts for veterans at the Coatesville VA on Dec. 17. The gift items included coffee makers, blenders, microwaves, slow cookers and toaster ovens. The Coatesville VA is a major stop along the Coatesville Link bus route, and the event is the result of the partnership between TMACC and the VA. This year marks the seventh year that TMACC has held a donation drive in the community to help provide gifts for veterans. The donations were coordinated through Tim Phelps, TMACC executive director, through the Foundation for the Improvement of Transportation (FIT). Ten donation boxes were distributed throughout FIT membership locations, allowing all FIT members to donate. Betty Shaw, executive administrator at TMACC, also leads TMACC’s annual gift delivery effort. Shaw does not just collect from FIT; donations come in

Award from pg 1 By Francine Fulton

The Chester County Youth Center recently received a state Program of the Year award for its dog treat-making initiative, which allows youth center residents to earn community service hours through a hands-on service project. The organic homemade treats made by the youths are donated to the Brandywine Valley SPCA in West Chester. The Pennsylvania Juvenile Detention Centers and Alternative Programs (JDCAP) award was presented in December to Kristi Washington the caseworker at the youth center, who developed the program. “This is an annual award,” she explained. “Every detention center can nominate one of their programs.” The dog treat program runs up to six times a year for Chester County Youth Center residents. The program begins with baking the all-natural dog treats from scratch. “I have recipe that I got from one of the former probation officers. It’s only four ingredients organic peanut butter, whole wheat flour, milk and baking powder - so it’s easy for the kids,” said Washington. “They mix everything by hand. I have a rolling pin and they roll it out like cookie dough, and we have dog bone cutouts. I take (the treats) back to the kitchen and bake them. We bag them up and put four or five to a bag.” Each treat-making session also includes a lesson about rescue shelters and their importance in the community. “The majority of (the youths) like dogs or have a dog and know about the SPCA,” said Washington, noting that the sessions also offer lessons about accurate measuring and baking. “Some of the boys and girls actually bake, but others have no idea and have never made cookies. So, it teaches them that as well.” Washington delivers the treats personally to the SPCA, where staff members always express their appreciation for the donation. “The one time they sent me a picture of one of their puppies eating the homemade dog treat,” she said, noting that plans call for one of the SPCA staff members to visit the youths at the center along with adoptable dogs. Participants in the youth

center’s Evening Reporting Center (ERC) have also delivered the treats made by the center’s residents to the SPCA, where they learned first-hand about volunteer opportunities and how the organization relies on community donations like the dog treats. Washington explained that ERC is a program for youths who attend structured sessions at the center on weekday evenings. “ERC is for those kids who are involved with juvenile probation. It’s like an after-school program but located in the same building,” she noted. “They do their homework here and eat dinner here, and they do a lot of community service.” The Chester County Youth Center provides specialized programs for youths who are receiving services from the Chester County Juvenile Probation Department; the Chester County Department of Children, Youth and Families; and the Chester County Court of Common Pleas. “We’re a juvenile detention center and shelter. We have the kids stay here, but we are a holding facility and they are not here long,” Washington pointed out. She said that staff members are always looking for community service activities that the youths can enjoy. “A lot of the staff have dogs, and we are big dog people,” Washington said. “The dog treat program has been extremely beneficial for the youth center residents as well as the youths that attend our Evening Reporting Center,” said Gary Blair, director of the Chester County Youth Center. “Not only do they earn valuable and appreciated community service hours, but they benefit from working together as a team and acquiring cooking life skills. “We are very pleased about this youth center award and are proud that Kristi and staff at the youth center are being recognized for the work they are doing,” he added. Pictured on front: Kristi Washington (center), a caseworker for the Chester County Youth Center, received a state Program of the Year award for the youth center’s dog treat-making program. Approximately 75 community and church members, along with friends and Bethany Christian School’s sixth-, seventh- and eighth-grade classes, volunteered on the morning of Dec. 13 to help move, sort and count the food items. About 35 people came out later that evening to pack and organize the boxes for distribution. In spite of rainy weather on Dec. 14, volunteers handed out boxes or delivered them to the homes of families between 9 a.m. and noon. Pat’s Pizza donated pizza for the volunteers that day. The Christmas Food Box committee included Andy Arthur, Ila Barlow, Bev Hartgrove and project leader Lisa Koza. Ozzie Perez assisted with Spanish translation. OPC sexton Clyde Prigg, members of Oxford Area High School Helping Hands and Boy Scout Troop 44 also provided assistance. Neighborhood Services Center provided the names of the recipients, who were interviewed for eligibility. As part of another local effort, state Rep. Christina Sappey held a charitable item donation drive on Nov. 22 at Willowdale Town Center in Kennett Square to benefit local families during the holiday season. Pet-related items were also collected for the Brandywine SPCA. More than 100 local residents contributed items on the day of the drive. Hundreds of children across southern Chester County received a new coat during the annual Warm Wishes coat distribution held at La Comunidad Hispana (LCH) on Dec. 10. While the holiday tradition is more than 10 years old, this is only the second year that the event took place at the health center’s newest location at 105 Vineyard Way, West Grove. The West Grove location currently houses LCH’s Women’s Health Center and Dental Center. LCH pediatrics will soon move to the location as the service expands into integrated health, mental health and social services for children in southern Chester County. A total of 293 coats were given away during the event thanks to Concordville Nissan and Concordville Subaru, which donated 300 coats through Auto Dealers CARing for Kids Foundation’s Driving Away the Cold program, as well as to event sponsor UnitedHealthcare. LCH’s Closet of Caring now includes additional sizes of coats for when families come for service in the winter months and need coats for their children. Community members are welcome to continue to donate new coats, hats, gloves and scarves to keep the closet full throughout the winter. As community members suggested different area ministries, Nagle pointed out that a 16year-old boy cannot be housed in most shelters with women and children due to liability issues. “LanCo MyHome (formerly Lancaster County Homeless Coalition) stepped in with The Factory (to create) a twopart program,” said Nagle. “The first part is family crisis housing,” he said, gesturing around to the several drywalled but unfinished rooms that have been built. “It is not a shelter, but a housing opportunity to provide long-term solutions.” The family crisis housing center offers four rooms. Two of the rooms each offer occupancy for three people; a door between the rooms can be opened to accommodate a family of up to six. The other two similar rooms can accommodate four in each room and a family of eight with the door open. In addition, there is a shared kitchen, bathroom, and open common area. Kristen Vieldhouse will serve as director of crisis housing to oversee the program. “The idea is to keep the family together, so the 16-year-old stays with the family rather than going into foster care,”

stated Nagle. “There are challenges, but we’re willing to step into that.” Nagle explained that the family could be enrolled in programming that will seek to have them in more permanent housing in 30 to 90 days. “We want it to be like an apartment, so they will cook their own meals and do their own grocery shopping (as they) prepare themselves for permanency.” In addition to the crisis housing, The Factory hopes to open a safe parking lot on the grounds by spring. “A family that ends up homeless in a car statistically doesn’t easily overcome that for a lot of reasons,” said Nagle. “This is not a transient parking lot,” he stated. “It’s a lot where people connected to the community come here to engage in services (and) find relationship and safety.” Nagle explained that those using the lot will check in at night and out again in the morning. They will be able to enter The Factory at certain hours for food and showers. He noted that 35 area students are currently coded as homeless. “They will connect with Kristen and the team to try to move them out of the car and into (permanent housing),” said

Nagle, who added the organization is working with Paradise Township to settle some issues before opening. “We hope to be (fully) open and running by the spring,” Nagle shared. Through Jared Erb, Pequea Valley School District career readiness coordinator, The Factory was able to enlist Pequea Valley High School students to help complete the crisis housing facility. “The drywall in this space was done by ninth-grade students,” said Nagle. “They were here puttying, taping, and sanding.” When that was completed, a professional painter came in to teach the students how to paint walls, trim, and edges. The drop ceiling was hung and the doors were installed before Christmas 2019. An area HVAC installer gave The Factory a discount on completing that work. The Factory Ministries’ hope was to have the first room in the crisis housing area open during January. Readers who would like to learn more about The Factory Ministries, which is located at 3293 Lincoln Highway East, Paradise, may visit www.the factoryministries.com or call 717-687-9594.

Social Justice Training Planned YWCA Lancaster will host the Racial Equity Institute, Part I (REI-I), formerly the Racial Justice Institute, at its offices, 110 N. Lime St., Lancaster, from Friday to Sunday, Jan. 17 to 19. This intensive two-and-a-half-day workshop represents YWCA Lancaster’s core social justice training program. It aims to give participants a common understanding of racism and related concepts. YWCA Lancaster views REI-I as a foundation for working toward dismantling institutional and systemic racism. YWCA Lancaster intends that participants leave the Racial Equity Institute experience equipped with a better understanding of the separate work, experiences, and responsibilities of people of color and white people. Workshop

Local residents are invited to register for the Racial Equity Institute, Part I, YWCA Lancaster’s core social justice training program. It will take place from Jan. 17 to 19. enrollees are introduced to a fundamental anti-racist, multicultural model that can lead to a tangible plan of action for themselves and/or their team. Workshop participants learn through multiple modalities, including journaling, workbooks, exercises, and toolkits. These tools can be used to study, question, and better understand the

history, context, and impact of racism on individuals and society. For more details, readers may contact David Nice, project manager, social justice, at dnice@ywcalancaster.org. There is a fee per participant. To register, readers may visit https://ywca lancaster.org/programs/social-Equity/REI/.

James and Teri Craft have a story to tell. The founders of The Novus Project and the authors of “Exposed: A Journey of Hope and Renewal,” they will share their story of how God brought healing and restoration to the tatters of their marriage when they speak at the one-day Restart Training Center Ministry (RTCM) marriage seminar and banquet. Pastor Jaime Santiago, executive director and founder of RTCM, learned of the Crafts because they are featured in The Conquer Series, a strategic program to help men overcome addictions to pornography; Santiago uses the program to help RTCM students gain victory. The seminar and banquet will be held at Yoder’s Banquet Facility, 14 S. Tower Road, New Holland, on Friday, Feb. 7. Seminar doors will open at 7:30 a.m. The seminar will include a continental breakfast and a cold buffet lunch, and it is scheduled to end at 3:30 p.m. The banquet dinner will be served at 6:30 p.m. Couples or individuals may register to attend the seminar or the banquet or both. A discount will be offered to those who register by Wednesday, Jan. 15. Table sponsorships are available as well. The Conquer Series was developed by Dr. Ted Roberts, a Foursquare minister. The Crafts became involved with the series after James was exposed for his sexual addiction while the couple was serving at a church in Hawaii. James thought he would take his secrets to his grave, and before they were exposed, Teri had no idea he was struggling. In trying to control his life, James said that God pointed out to him that he was not in control. He confessed to his wife and three daughters, and the family began packing to leave Hawaii. Packing, however, was only the beginning. The journey of healing began when James’ daughters came to him and hugged him, and the couple started to see God’s grace in the middle of the pain and anger. They began to focus on allowing God to restore their brokenness, putting their entire lives into rebuilding the family. The Conquer Series helped James understand what was happening in his mind and impacted his movement forward away from addiction. In 2014, Santiago worked with Petra Church in New Holland to bring Roberts to Lancaster County. Roberts taught a seminar at the church and then served as a speaker at a banquet for an addictions ministry Santiago was directing at the time. In his work at RTCM, Santiago strives to help individuals who have turned to addictions often to overcome a past trauma. The ministry aims to support clients in finding healing and developing healthy coping mechanisms. Santiago uses The Conquer Series with the clients at RTCM because he says Roberts’ book “Pure Desire” addresses the principles of sexual addiction. “I ask (clients) to tell me what a chapter was about, what (they) learned, how (they) can apply that in (their lives),” said Santiago. “That helps them (because it) starts transforming them from the inside out. I want them to devel-

op accountability. I use (the series) because it’s effective.” Santiago emphasized that the seminar can be useful for couples that are experiencing any kind of marital strife. “(They may ask) ‘Is it how we communicate? How we manage our finances? Childhood trauma that we haven’t addressed?’ It could be anger, verbal or physical abuse, or emotional abuse,” said Santiago. “There are all kinds of things that can be wrong in a marriage, and (the seminar) will address all of that. Our desire is to encourage and strengthen marriages.” Groups are welcome, and table

Winter is in full swing in Pennsylvania, accompanied by freezing temperatures, snow, and ice. The U.S. Postal Service asks customers to help letter carriers deliver mail safely by clearing snow and ice from sidewalks, stairs, porches, street approach, and mailboxes. Delivery service may be delayed or curtailed whenever streets or walkways present hazardous conditions for letter carriers or when snow is plowed against mailboxes. Delivery of curtailed mail will be attempted the next delivery day. To do their part to keep letter carriers safe and to help them continue to offer consistent delivery service, customers

should heed the following tips: All customers should keep their mailbox or mail slot free of ice and snow. This includes the approach to and exit from the area, as well as sufficient space on both sides of curbside mailboxes. Customers receiving door delivery should ensure their sidewalks, steps, and porches are clear. Customers receiving curbside or rural delivery should remove snow piles, such as those left by snow plows, to keep access to their mailboxes clear for letter carriers. Customers should keep in mind that painted porches and steps are particularly hazardous. While salting or rubber-backed mats help make them less

slippery, customers should still clear the snow before a letter carrier arrives with the mail. In hazardous situations when delivery is suspended, customers should contact local postal officials to discuss ways to eliminate the hazard. Residents and businesses with blue collection boxes near their property are asked to keep them clear of snow and ice as well. According to the U.S. Postal Service, slips, trips, and falls are the leading cause of accidents among letter carriers. In addition to endangering the safety of the carrier, injuries to a letter carrier - or any visitor to a home - can result in costly liabilities to homeowners.

Eleven students from Lebanon Valley College (LVC), Annville, recently represented LVC at the annual simulated European Union (EU) parliamentary session in Washington, D.C. A culmination of the disciplinary perspectives course DSP 380: “EU Simulation, the trip was organized by the colleges and universities of the Mid-Atlantic European Union Simulation Consortium (MAEUSC). Local students included Ashlee Leamont of Parkesburg. Leamont is a graduate of Octorara Area High School. She is pursuing a Bachelor of Science in a selfdesigned area and French and Spanish. Each year the EU simulation conference addresses a different policy focus. This year, students debated two directives: one on the proposed Just Energy Transition Fund to help European countries that rely heavily on coal and other fossil fuels transition to clean energy by 2050; and another on digital privacy and services. Students began the fall semester by studying the history, culture, and current political environment of Portugal and Cyprus, the countries they were assigned to represent at the conference. Students also studied how the EU operates, as well as its history and current issues and tensions.

The Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania has announced George Swartz as Volunteer of the Year for 2020. Swartz was recently selected for the honor by the Friends of the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania’s board of directors from among the museum’s corps of more than 150 active volunteers. Swartz retired from globetrotting for a living following a 35-year career as a corporate pilot for Armstrong World Industries. He is now indulging his many interests, including world travel; amassing railroad memorabilia like lanterns, tools, and insulators; and creating model train layouts. Swartz had known that he wanted to be a private pilot since he toured the Lancaster Airport with his secondgrade class. He went on to graduate from the Piedmont Aerospace Institute, where he learned everything about aircraft, not just how to fly a plane. Swartz is proud of achieving more than 74,000 hours of flight safety. His knowledge of mechanical, electrical, instrumentation, and various other processes has served

him well not only in his career as a pilot but in building his own home and in his model train hobby. Swartz’s love for trains began at age 4, with American Flyer pieces, which he still collects. Swartz is a regular volunteer on the Pennsylvania Middle Division operating model train layout located in the museum’s second-floor gallery. “Volunteering at the museum is so much fun, and I love every moment of it,” Swartz said. “The camaraderie is terrific, and everyone - volunteers and staff - is so upbeat. I particularly enjoy interacting with our patrons and making amazing connections with people from all walks of life.” A native of Lancaster, Swartz currently resides in Lititz. He is the father of an adult son and an adult daughter, whom he readily helps with home renovation projects. Until recently, he and his KPETS therapy dog Sunny visited nursing home residents. One item on his bucket list is to learn more about the history and culture of Native Americans.
