As the new year begins, it is a good opportunity to reflect one last time on 2022, a year that featured positive news stories that filled the pages of the Community Courier newspaper.
Local pet rescues were highlighted in 2022, specifically those with inspirational stories. Readers learned about a little kitten named Drizzle, who was dumped in the trash and found by a good samaritan who turned him over to Lucky Dawg Animal Rescue (LDAR). LDAR volunteers cared for Drizzle, who weighed only 2.5 ounces when he was found, which included feeding him by hand every four hours for several weeks. Today, Drizzle has found a permanent, loving home and is thriving with his new owners.
Another pet that readers met in 2022 was Cider, the 3-year-old black Labrador retriever that is the Octorara Area School District’s
facility dog. Cider, who was trained by Susquehanna Service Dogs (SSD), works on a daily basis with the elementary school students, who are able to read to him and share their lessons with him.
One of the most notable events in 2022 was the Parkesburg Sesquicentennial, a three-day celebration held in May. Activities included a parade, musical entertainment, fireworks, Victorian dancing and the crowning of a sesquicentennial queen, king and court. The anniversary marked the incorporation of the borough of Parkesburg, which was originally known as Fountain Inn, named after a tavern built in 1734.
Community service organizations were active again in 2022. The Parkesburg Lions Club held its annual Adopt a Soldier Project, which provided boxes of snacks, toiletries and other items for men and women serving in the military overseas. The Christiana Lions Club spearheaded a collection of supplies
for flood victims in eastern Kentucky as well as for tornado victims in western Kentucky. The supplies, including generators, flashlights, bottled water and more, were delivered directly by tractor-trailer and distributed by members of Lions Clubs in the affected areas.
A new organization that formed in 2022 was Everybody Plays! The all-volunteer group is looking to renovate the playground at Minch Park in Parkesburg so that it is accessible to children of all abilities. Plans call for the playground’s main structure to be fully wheelchair accessible.
2022 also saw the opening of two important buildings in the area. The Atglen Public Library relocated to 121 Main St., across from the borough hall. With the relocation, the library has more than doubled its size, which allows for additional programming, a snack area, a meeting room and exhibition space to hold art shows.

In the spring of 2022, Jess Steck opened a Little Free Library (LFL) filled with books to share at the family home in Atglen. Now the Stecks’ LFL was one of 150 LFLs that were chosen to receive copies of the “Good Morning America” (GMA) Book Club pick for December 2022, “The Light Pirate” by Lily Brooks-Dalton.
The Book Club pick was announced on the Dec. 6, 2022, episode of GMA, which included information about the LFL organization. The segment also featured an appearance by the author.
Jess explained that each month, owners of the LFLs, called stewards, can apply to win two copies of the newest GMA Book Club pick. “The LFL organization has a Facebook page for all the stewards,” said Jess. “They have a partnership with ‘Good Morning America,’ and they give books to 150 libraries a month. I enter every month and finally won.”
Winners have their library location featured on a special online map. “They have a full map of where they gave the books throughout the United States,” Jess explained, noting that the LFL organization also offers an app so that readers can find LFL locations near them. Library stewards can also

Participants at Challenger Clubs - monthly Bible studies for individuals age 15 and up with physical or intellectual disabilities – do not always express their enjoyment of the experience verbally. “A grandmother told me recently that her grandson, who (shows little emotion) around his family, is so excited to attend,” said Meghan Martin, disability ministries assistant, Handi-Vangelism Ministries International (HVMI), which oversees the clubs. “There are so many smiles.”
HVMI has run Challenger Clubs at several Ephrata-area churches, including New Joy and Highpoint, along with the HVMI offices at 300 W. Chestnut St., Ephrata, and private residences, for several years. Now, the organization has expanded to the area south of Route 30 with a new club, which began serving residents of the greater Paradise area in October 2022. The Challenger Club at Calvary Monument Bible Church, 1660 Mine Road, Paradise, meets the second Tuesday of each month at 6:30 p.m. The club will continue to meet through April.
Martin said each club meeting begins with worship, followed by a Bible lesson and often a skit to enhance understanding of the lesson, and a memory verse. During small group time, participants work on a booklet, which can be taken home at the end of the year, focused on life application of the lesson. Martin shared that the lessons are structured to be more palatable to participants. “We write our own curriculum, and we are able to write in a way that we know has been successful in the past,” she said. “Parents can see the growth in their kids when they see them understanding and answering questions. It’s a different aspect that parents don’t always see.” Martin noted that parents may drop their children at the club or they are welcome to stay. “The respite
piece is something we like to offer,” she pointed out.
According to Martin, volunteers are needed to work with HVMI staff aiding participants at each meeting. “(Volunteers) may help with small group time or take part in the skit,” she said.
The Bible clubs are an extension of HVMI’s summer program, which provides uniquely designed camping experiences for individuals with disabilities. “A lot of places provide fun activities for adults with disabilities, but our goal is to focus on a Bible lesson,” explained Martin, who added that many participants enjoy
the club so much they cannot wait to return. “We have a girl who just moved (to the Paradise area) with her family, and she has come to every meeting,” said Martin. “She was walking out the door after the last meeting, and she said to her mother, ‘What’s the date for the next one so I can put it on my calendar?’” reported Martin.
Readers who would like to learn more about HVMI may visit www.hvmi.org. Individuals who want to know more about volunteering or participation in a club may call 717-859-4777 or email mmartin@hvmi.org.

Benchmark FCU Provides Holiday Gifts
Staff members at Benchmark Federal Credit Union (FCU) had an opportunity to “adopt” a child in need for the holidays by purchasing the gifts on a child’s wish list.
Benchmark FCU partnered with Family Service of Chester County to receive wish lists for 22 local children, and employees were able to purchase the gifts on the children’s lists. Benchmark FCU president and CEO Daniel J. Machon Jr. and Mark Pizzi, Benchmark FCU’s chief commercial operating officer, delivered the gifts in person on Dec. 23.
As the only federal credit union to exclusively serve Chester County, Benchmark FCU supports more than 20 community events and organizations each year.

Driving along Cambridge Road in Gap between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Eve, one cannot miss the shape of Santa Claus in a helicopter outlined in colorful lights that is perched on the roof of the house at 193 Cambridge Road. Each year, on Thanksgiving night, the jolly old elf in his flying machine comes to light along with about 360 other characters and more than 45,000 lights when resident Norm Montgomery Jr. flips the switch.
Norm Jr. noted that his family had recently discussed how long they have been illuminating the home. “We have been trying to figure that out,” he said, stating that his sister believes the mass decorating began in 1984 - nearly 40 Christmases ago. Norm Jr. recalls that the first year there were about 10 large ornaments in front of the house, but with each consecutive Christmas, he has added more.
The layout, which starts with a pathway adjacent to the parking area and winds around the back to the opposite side, is designed by Norm Jr. with slight variations each year. Norm Jr. said it takes about six weeks to set up the walkway, which includes a variety of figures and characters related to Christmas. “We have Disney characters and penguins,” Norm Jr. said, standing in front of a choir of child-size carolers. The yard also features snowmen, bears, toy soldiers, reindeer,
candy canes, elves, angels, and two trains. A large lighted Nativity fills the front porch. A second scene lights the entrance to the path. Norm Jr. tries to have a live Santa present at least during the Saturday prior to Christmas.
He believes visitors started walking through - as opposed to just driving by - the display about 20 years ago, but, although attendance estimates run as high as 1,000 a year, that number was not tracked until 2022 when a registration book was added. Monetary donations are accepted to defray electric and other expenses.
list what books are available in their boxes. “LFL has an app, and you can mark that you were a recipient of the Book Club pick. If people pull up the app, they can locate the books in the libraries,” Jess added.
The LFL structure was created by Jess and her husband, Dan, who is a carpenter. Unlike other book-sharing boxes, the LFL at the Steck home is shaped like a vintage travel trailer. “We have done a lot of traveling with our RV, so we shaped it like a vintage trailer,” said Jess. “(Dan) built it, and I did all the painting.”
The trailer-shaped box is made of wood with a clear coating to protect it from the weather. It features a license plate on the back that says, “Read More,” along with little wheels and a trailer hitch. The box was decorated with Christmas lights for the holiday season.
Each book inside the box is stamped with an image of the trailer along with the LFL char-
ter number, which is registered at www.littlefreelibrary.org. It also bears the LFL motto, “Take a book. Share a book.”
Since the box’s installation, Jess reported that it has become very popular in the neighborhood. “There is at least one visitor a day, and on the weekend it picks up,” she said, noting that posts about the book box and its contents can be found on the “Octorara Community” Facebook page. “I have gotten so many donations from people on the Octorara page,” she noted.
Jess believes that LFLs provide a convenient way for people to share books, which promotes reading. “I’m not a keeper of books. If I like (a book), I’ll pass it on to a family member or put it in the box,” she said.
The Steck LFL is located at 745 Steelville Mill Road, Atglen. A listing of other local LFLs can be found at the aforementioned website and on the app, which can be downloaded from the App Store or at www.littlefreelibrary.org/app.

Christmas trees can also be put to good use in nature.
Victoria Laubach, executive director of the Green Valleys Watershed Association based in northern Chester County, recommends that homeowners place their trees in the yard, where they can be used as a shelter for birds as well as an outdoor feeding station. “You can put (the tree) up outside and hang bird feeders from it,” she said, noting that homeowners are reminded to remove all tinsel, ornaments and decorations from the tree before recycling it or placing it outdoors.
Items that can be placed on the tree include pinecones

Each year, Norm Jr. sets a goal of starting work on the display by Oct. 31. “I do 95% of the set up myself,” he said, adding that he counts on Norm Sr. for help with some strings of lights and extension cords.
Acquiring more decorations is on Norm Jr.’s Dec. 26 schedule, with yearly purchases ranging from a few pieces to more than 15. “I go out when everything is half off,” he said, adding that he discovered Santa’s chopper at a yard sale in Leola about a decade ago. For 2022, Norm Jr. added Christmas trees made of lights along the front fence. “I really like those (trees),” he said. “They are simple, but they look good.”

coated in peanut butter and then rolled in bird seed, as well as suet cakes, strings of popcorn and orange slices. These items can be replenished throughout the winter season.
Laubach said that tree branches can also be used to protect perennial gardens from “frost heaving,” which is when plants lift up or “heave” from the soil due to fluctuations in temperature.
“You can cut the branches and lay them on top of a perennial garden. It helps insulate the ground - like mulch - and keeps the perennials from heaving up out of the ground,” she explained.
“It’s an old technique, and it
is used for helping your perennial garden when the temperatures go from warm to freezing cold.”
She said that shredded trees can be used as mulch for gardens or garden paths. “They don’t generally make good firewood because they have a lot of sap and can spark a lot,” Laubach noted.
However, according to the Arbor Day Foundation, evergreens can be burned outdoors and the remaining ash can be spread on gardens. Wood ash contains nutrients to help the soil and can keep insects away.
Another tip offered by the foundation is to submerge trees in local ponds or lakes

found in area parks. With permission from the property owner or park officials, trees can become a haven for fish, protecting them from predators. Algae that grows on the trees underwater can also feed fish.
Further, the foundation suggests stripping needles from Christmas tree branches and storing them in small bags to use as air fresheners or sachets.
“All that work goes into growing the tree, and it has all these benefits. Just to see it go into the landfill is sad,” Laubach added.
