Decorating Contest Winners Announced BY FRANCINE FULTON

On the evening of Dec. 17, members of the Parkesburg Lions Club set out to determine the winners of the club’s annual holiday decorating contest. “This year had more contenders than years prior, so the decision was not an easy one,” said Lion Robin

McKenna, noting that each winning group was given a wooden sign to be posted in its yard notifying others of its win along with a cash prize. First place was awarded to the Uhland family, whose home included numerous holiday lights, illuminated candy canes surrounding the property, Santa on the roof and a “falling” reindeer. Christiana Lions Collecting Items For Tornado Victims BY FRANCINE FULTON

ust a few weeks before Christmas, a devastating tornado impacted western Kentucky. As the area recovers from the loss of life and catastrophic damage, a local effort is underway to help residents of those communities. The Christiana Lions Club is currently collecting items to benefit the tornado victims, and the public is encouraged to participate. Nonperishable food will be collected by Lions Club members on Friday, Jan. 14, from 4 to 8 p.m. and on Saturday, Jan. 15, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Dutch-Way Farm Market, 365 Route 41, Gap. Lion Ed Baylor, assistant to Jim Groff, Pennsylvania Lions disaster relief coordinator, explained that shoppers will be offered a list of

heavy-duty trash bags; flashlights; batteries; and work gloves. The Pennsylvania Lions Disaster Relief Team was provided with the list of needed items from Lion district governor Gary Logan from Hopkinsville, Ky. “As of this time, (these) are items that they are in dire need of and we have put out a plea to all 17 districts for help in getting the items listed to be shipped to Kentucky,” said Baylor. The nonperishable food and the donations collected at the Lions clubhouse will be boxed up and brought over to Lowe’s of Morgantown on Friday, Jan. 21, at 9 a.m. With assistance from Lowe’s employees, club members will load the boxes onto a tractor-trailer. “We hope that people and organizations will help,” said Baylor. “(In the past) people have been very generous.”

As part of the national Wreaths Across America (WAA) program held each December, wreaths are placed on the graves of veterans to honor them for their service. Wreath-laying ceremonies are held at locations throughout the country, as well as at Arlington National Cemetery.

Because of the number of wreaths needed, the Boy Scouts placed some of them on the graves in advance of the ceremony. “The board of the cemetery marked all of the graves that were veterans with flags,” explained DAR member Nancy Drummond. “Everybody was invited to lay a wreath and instructed on how to do that - so many inches from the stone and to tip it back. (We were also instructed to say), ‘Thank you for service,’ and state (the name of the veteran) aloud.” DAR members and the community were invited to sponsor the cost of the wreaths. “We were able to get enough donations to cover every veteran’s grave,” Drummond noted. “People could order wreaths from WAA and indicate which cemetery they would like to receive the wreaths. If they did not indicate a specific cemetery, the wreaths went to Arlington National Cemetery.” This is the first time that the Chester County DAR has held a WAA ceremony at the BirminghamLafayette Cemetery. “A number of years ago our chapter started doing this at Paoli Battlefield. As part of the Adopt a Soldier Project sponsored by the Parkesburg Lions Club, more than 230 boxes filled with gifts and personal care items were mailed out to soldiers in Egypt and Kuwait this holiday season. Past Lions district governor Nancy Gauthier, chair of the Pennsylvania Lions Adopt a Soldier Project, collected the boxes at her home in Parkesburg. Lions Club members, including Gauthier’s husband, Dave, prepared the boxes for shipping. Other Lions Club members who contributed to the effort included Helen Leibig, Robin McKenna, Ruth Taylor, Jane Rice and Jill Scott.

The Mellinger home was awarded second place. “This house was beautifully decorated with classic white lights and included touches of red (poinsettias),” noted McKenna. The home’s surrounding fence was also strung with lighted garland. Third place went to the Entress family. “Their house had lots of lights along with a variety of character stakes as well,” McKenna said. The home also included large Christmas ornaments suspended from the front porch and a lighted walkway. Honorable mention was given to Impact Church for its outdoor Nativity, as well as for lights and ornaments that were placed on trees outside the church. Accepting the award on behalf of the church was pastor Mike Bailey. Photos of all of the winners can be found on the club’s Facebook page, which can be found by searching for “Parkesburg Lions Club.” “Our residents provided many festive and beautifully decorated homes for the community to enjoy,” McKenna said. “It really does add to the beauty of the season, and (their) efforts are appreciated.” McKenna announced that the Parkesburg Lions Club has several ongoing community service projects, and the public is invited to contribute. “We collect eyeglasses that get recycled into new glasses. These can be dropped off at a variety of ots 728 L

local eye doctor’s offices, at Walmart and at the Parkesburg Library,” she noted. The library is located at 105 West St., Parkesburg, and Walmart is located at 100 Commons Drive, Parkesburg. The Lions Club is also participating in the Trex Recycling Challenge program. Groups that collect more than 500 pounds of plastic refuse in a six-month span can earn a highperformance composite bench for their community. “We are continually collecting plastics to be used to earn benches through Trex. These benches will become part of our community as we earn them,” McKenna stated. Receptacles are located at Fulton Bank, 100 W. First Ave., Parkesburg, and the Parkesburg Library. Plastic items that can be donated include plastic grocery bags, newspaper sleeves, empty ice bags and bread bags and the plastic that is used to wrap a case of bottled water. A complete list of plastics that will be accepted is available on the club’s Facebook page in a post dated May 30, 2021. The Parkesburg Lions Club, which has a motto of “We Serve,” is always looking for new members. The club meets on the second and fourth Thursdays of the month at 6:30 p.m. at the Parkesburg Baptist Church, 103 West St., Parkesburg.
