Therapy Dog Provides Hope And Comfort By Francine Fulton
When Lara Dushkewich and her husband, Tom, rescued Freddie, a boxer/beagle mix, from a North Carolina shelter, she never expected that Freddie would become a therapy dog bringing hope and comfort to senior citizens and to victims of domestic violence. Lara learned about Freddie’s natural calming tendencies while visiting her grandmother in a nursing home. “The first week I had him when he was about a year old, I brought him to see my grandmother, who was recovering from an illness at the nursing home, Lara recalled. “He walked right in and had an instant connection with my grandmother. My grandmother went through the
various stages of ability - (using a) cane, a walker, a wheelchair and then (becoming) bedridden. Through all of that, he was gentle and he didn’t need treats to get him to sit and stay. He learned through his engagement with my grandmother. He was not adopted to be a therapy dog, but he became one. Freddie, now 11, who was certified in 2014 through Therapy Dogs International, regularly visits the Domestic Violence Center of Chester County (DVCCC), where Lara is a board member and an active volunteer who has been certified to meet with clients. Freddie is also a frequent visitor to The Hickman, a senior living community in West Chester. On Dec. 4, DVCCC marked Freddie’s 200th official visit as a therapy dog to the facility. To celebrate the day, the staff
members and shelter residents presented him with a special liver muffin cake. According to Melissa Baxter, DVCCC’s chief operating officer, Freddie is a welcome visitor who is loved by children and adults alike. “Freddie’s many visits to DVCCC over the years have brought comfort to scores of survivors of domestic violence and their children, she said. “Freddie’s kind and gentle manner just draws people in. The love he shares and comfort he provides is heartwarming and, I believe, healing. It was an honor to share this special milestone with Freddie and Lara. Lara said that bringing Freddie to the organization is very rewarding. “(I enjoy) seeing the smiles that he brings when he walks into the room, the children that run up to him, the survivor See Therapy Dog pg 3
Freddie, accompanied by his owners, Lara and Tom Dushkewich, recently made his 200th visit as a therapy dog to the Domestic Violence Center of Chester County.

GED Classes from pg 1 By Francine Fulton
Chester County Opportunities Industrialization Center (OIC) recently revamped its General Educational Development (GED) program and welcomes new students to take part in GED prep classes. Both daytime and evening classes are offered. Additionally, the Exton location of Chester County OIC hired two new teachers in August - Dr. Steven Kincaid and Kristie Anderson - to head the GED program. Kincaid and Anderson both have extensive career experience in the private sector and have significant math skills that benefit students preparing for the GED math exam. Both are also experienced GED instructors. “The GED is a high school equivalency degree,” Kincaid explained. “In 2014, GED was sold to the private sector. The GED now has several other companies that provide high school certificates. We have two authorized in the state of Pennsylvania - GED and the High School Equivalency Test (HiSet). The HiSet exam is put out by the same people (who administer) the SAT.”

Kincaid announced that the GED program in Exton has already had an exciting success to report. Recently, a student in the program achieved the first perfect score on a portion of the GED exam ever recorded in the history of Chester County OIC. The student did not miss a single question in the science portion of the GED science test. “There are four parts to the GED - social studies, English/language arts, science and math,” Kincaid said. “All of her other test (scores) were also extremely high. She missed a perfect score on the math section by only two questions. She was here (for classes) for about two and half months, and we were just so pleased and excited about her performance.” Additional programming has been added for GED students. OIC now offers distance learning instruction to benefit students who cannot attend regular classroom sessions or who have an interest in supplementing their classroom instruction. The Exton program also offers new on-site assessment capabilities that allow students to keep track of their academic progress
The three incoming members of Chester County’s Board of Commissioners, Marian Moskowitz, Josh Maxwell and Michelle Kichline, took their official oaths of office, administered by President Judge Jacqueline C. Cody, on Jan. 2. Moskowitz was elected chair, and Maxwell was elected vice chair. The votes of the threemember board for chair and vice chair were unanimous. In anticipation of their official start on Jan. 6, the commissioners announced their plans to support and enhance the change in leadership, including the creation of a transition team
designed to ensure a seamless process and to encourage the review of county procedures and practices. West Chester University president Christopher Fiorentino will chair the transition team, and the vice chair is David Thornburgh, president and CEO of the Committee of Seventy, the civic leadership organization that advances good government in the City of Philadelphia and across Pennsylvania. In addition to the three county commissioners, the official swearing-in included elected row officers Deb Ryan as district attorney, Fredda Maddox as
through periodic testing. In addition, students have access to “ready” tests that alert them as soon as they have progressed to the point that they are likely to pass the GED test. When students have passed the GED exam, OIC offers employment counseling through its partner CareerLink, which is located at the same facility where the students attend class. Experienced employment counselors advise students about area job opportunities and work with them on resume preparation and interviewing skills. Kincaid noted that GED students range in age and come from various backgrounds. “Older people who have been (living) without a GED make up about 10% of our clientele. Within the past four or five years, many students have dropped out to work because of family problems. They make up 40 to 50%,” he noted. “The biggest and fastest growing number of our (students) are legal immigrants from other counties who have a high school diploma or even an advanced degree from their home country that America does not recognize. Even if they have master’s degree sheriff, Chris Pielli as recorder of deeds, Debbie Bookman as prothonotary and Michele Vaughn as register of wills, as well as Magisterial District Judges Martin Goch and James Kovaleski. The ceremonial swearing-in of all elected officials, judges and magisterial district judges took place on Jan. 4 at 11 a.m. in West Chester University’s Emilie K. Asplundh Concert Hall in West Chester. Children at the Domestic Violence Center of Chester County enjoy visiting with Freddie, 11, a registered therapy dog. Freddie also visits The Hickman, a senior living community in West Chester.
State Sen. Andy Dinniman recently honored three Chester County residents upon celebrating their 100th birthdays. The celebration was hosted at Surrey Services for Seniors. Dinniman presented the attending centenarians with special Senate certificates honoring their lives. Throughout the event, they shared their experiences. Irene West, a lifelong native of the Chester area, was married for 55 years. She worked as a home decorating consultant and was a champion-level shuffleboard player. West still has a large collection of trophies from her competitive years. The Rev. Dr. Theodore “Ted” Horvath, born in Ohio, has dedicated much of his life to writing, editing, and reading. He served as an ordained clergyman and has recently delved into genealogy, learning that his late wife was a descendant

A registration fee has been set and may be paid on race day. Those who register by Friday, Jan. 17, will pay a discounted fee. Advance registrants may pick up their race packets on Jan. 17 from 4 to 7 p.m. at Dick’s Sporting Goods in The Shoppes at Belmont, Fruitville Pike, Lancaster. A total of 234 runners and hikers registered for the 2019 Polar Bear 5K, Kanaskie reported. Scores of volunteers also were on hand to oversee the event, and 47 well-behaved dogs either ran or walked with their owners. The Polar Bear 5K is the Sierra Club - Lancaster Group’s major fundraiser. The group uses the proceeds to support local efforts to end global warming, which is credited as the reason polar bears and other creatures are at risk of extinction. The funds will help finance the group’s popular “green project” grant program, which has awarded grants of up to $500 to 44 Lancaster County

Not only is he present, he truly is giving of his love.” Lara said that Freddie is affected by loss and grieved at her grandmother’s passing. “The last week that my grandmother was alive, she was in hospice,” Lara recalled. “We were sitting on the floor in her room, and I turned to Freddie and said, ‘I think it’s time for us to say goodbye.’ He put his paws on her bed and kissed her goodbye on her nose.” Freddie will continue his therapy dog work as long as possible. Because of the energy it takes, Lara limits Freddie’s visits to about three hours of “touch time” weekly. “He will do this until he shows me he does not want to do this anymore,” Lara said. “He had a herniated disc in 2018, and last summer after two surgeries he beat cancer. At 11, he is still feisty and still wants to go and do his work.” Freddie resides with Lara and Tom and his six rescue dog siblings, including one therapy dog in training. Since then, it has expanded into a partnership with other organizations and churches; this year, more than 500 volunteers will support 22 service projects, three community events, and 40 sites. During the week of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, it holds a brunch to support scholarship fundraising. It also holds volunteer projects, such as blanket-making sessions for children in area hospitals.

The Connelly Foundation awarded a $25,000 two-year grant to the Friends Association for Care & Protection of Children for programs to help Chester County families gain housing stability and financial security. The grant will support the work of Friends Association’s case managers to assist families by building on their existing strengths and helping them to access resources and services that they need to move out of poverty and reach their true potentials. Case managers assist families with accessing benefits, locating appropriate housing solutions and increasing their incomes. The $25,000 grant will be used for direct expenses in support of four programs - Emergency Family Shelter, Homeless Prevention, Housing Stability Case Management and Outreach to Homeless Families. The goal of all of the programs is to apply a holistic approach to programming, to ensure that people’s lives are transformed and the impact of this work is felt for generations to come. Since its founding in 1955, the Connelly Foundation has been a grantmaking organization awarding grants to nonprofits in the Philadelphia area that demonstrate outstanding performance in meeting community needs. The mission of the Connelly Foundation is to create access for those in need and opportunity for those with vision. Last year, Friends Association partnered with 92 families, supplied 7,655 nights of secure shelter and prevented homelessness for 58 families in Chester County.

five ounces of starch, and three ounces of vegetable a day,” said board member Marie Glass, who handles intakes of new clients and cancellations, and who has been involved with the program for more than a decade. She noted that meals are available for recipients who need to follow a customized diet, including those on lowsodium, diabetic, low vitamin K, vegetarian, and gluten-free diets, as well as soft diets, puree diets, and others. Hot meals may include ham and pineapple gravy, a shrimp dish, Southwest stuffed peppers, meatloaf and brown gravy, or chicken breast and gravy, while cold meals may include a turkey and cheddar sandwich, chicken Caesar salad, Cobb salad, or an egg and olive sandwich. Glass noted that salads are usually served twice a week in lieu of a sandwich. Currently, the Paradise organization could use a few volunteer drivers. “It’s a total of three hours a month,” said Glass, who noted that a driver who is scheduled for a particular day is busy for about 90 minutes. “We use 10 volunteers per week for a two-week rotation,” she said. According to board member Debbie Groff, who has served
the program for more than 10 years and currently oversees financial aspects, people from all areas of the community help with the program and many have been volunteering to deliver meals for several years. “They are amazing,” she said, adding, “We could always use more volunteers because people’s schedules change, but it has been a lot of community support to make it work. It’s nice to have extras and substitute (drivers).” Glass added that for as many as a third of the Meals on Wheels clients, the driver may be the only interaction that person has on a given day. The Paradise area extends almost to Lampeter-Stasburg High School, and Glass noted it would be nice to have a driver from that area. The delivery range also includes Georgetown, Kinzers, White Horse, west to the intersection of routes 896 and 30, and north beyond the village of Intercourse. Drivers pick up meals at 9 a.m. and deliver on one of two routes from 9:15 to 10:30 a.m. The program allows many senior residents as well as others recovering from illnesses to remain in their own homes. Those wishing to help or observe a route may call 717-940-4640.

Base Ball from pg 1 Levante Brewing Company, 208 Carter Drive, West Chester. Prospective players are invited to attend, as well as those interested in serving as umpires, historians and scorekeepers. According to team member Rick Stratton, teams follow the rules and customs established in 1864 by dressing in historically similar attire and using periodappropriate equipment, including handmade wooden bats and hand-stitched balls made exclusively for vintage play. In vintage base ball, players are called ballists and the batter is called the striker. Unlike modern baseball, players do not wear gloves in the field. Stratton pointed out that the baseball used in vintage play is slightly bigger and softer than a modern baseball. In addition, only one baseball is used during the entire game. The games have one umpire, and all pitching is underhand. Team members do wear cleats, but all modern-day logos are covered with black tape. Stratton said that scorekeeping is not as detailed as it is in modern baseball. “Traditionally in the 1860s, only runs scored and outs created were accounted for each striker (batter),” he explained. “Our players like to know their stats, so we use more of a modern method to keep score. We do not go to the level of detail of counting pitches or assigning errors to fielders.” The current club consists of individuals of all ages and backgrounds. Some have no prior experience playing competitive baseball, while others have college-level experience. Men and women 18 years or older are invited to participate as players.
“In 2013, the club started with about seven full-time members and several walk-ons from other clubs who were willing to fill in as needed,” Stratton noted. “Today, we have about 15 active members but rarely do we ever feel like we have too many players.” Home matches are played at East Goshen Park, and games are free for spectators to attend. Games are played on an open expanse of grass in the park. Canvas bags or sacks filled with rubber chips are used for bases. For the upcoming season, the group will also play games in neighboring states, and, for the first time, the club will travel to Wisconsin in June to participate in a festival with other vintage base ball clubs from around the country. “We routinely travel to Long Island, the eastern shore of Maryland, New Jersey, Gettysburg and points in between,” said Stratton. “In 2016, the club traveled to the St. Louis area for a weekend festival. The 2020 trip to Wisconsin will be our furthest trip yet.” Team players are asked to pay a fee to participate. Full- and part-time memberships are offered. “(Having additional) players is always the top priority. Some of our players retired this past year, and a few have become busy with other pursuits,” Stratton noted. “Extra players mean we have somebody who can umpire. A full-time umpire would help us create a consistent atmosphere of authenticity.” For more information, readers may email brandywinebbc @gmail.com or visit www.brandy winebbc.org or www.facebook .com/BrandywineBBC.

Trees must be free of decorations, lights, plastic bags, and hardware, including nails in the trunk. The park mulching program is for Christmas trees only. No other yard waste will be accepted.

Gov. Tom Wolf has officially declared January 2020 as Learn to Ski and Snowboard Month in Pennsylvania, with the Senate also making a proclamation. For the entire month, members of the Pennsylvania Ski Areas Association (SkiPA) are offering special discounts on learn-to-ski packages, in order to make it affordable and convenient for firsttimers to get started and hit the Pennsylvania slopes. First-timers can take advantage of a discount off an adult or child midweek learn-to-ski and snowboard package at any SkiPA resort. The 21-member resorts encompass all regions of the state. Marshall College and a founding member of the Lancaster Environmental Action Federation (LEAF), worked to promote the conservation of natural resources for the improvement of the environment of Lancaster County’s public parks and open spaces. In 2000, LEAF donated funds to the Lancaster County Department of Parks and Recreation for the creation of the nursery in memory of Moss. According to park officials, residents drop off about 1,500 Christmas trees each year, which produce 22 tons of mulch. The mulch is ideal for acid-loving plants such as rhododendrons and azaleas, as well as many deciduous ornamental trees and shrubs that require slightly acidic soil conditions. The mulch will be available to residents on a first-come, first-served basis after Tuesday, Jan. 7, near the tree drop-off site. Persons desiring free mulch should bring a pitchfork or shovel and a bag or a trailer to transport it home. For more information about the Christmas tree mulching program, residents may call the park office at 717-299-8215 on weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. To learn more about the Lancaster County Park System, readers may visit www.lancastercountyparks.org.

Making A Difference Every Day In The Field of Senior Care home, and they should be made to feel important and well cared for. Patience and understanding are key. Caring about how well our residents are treated is our main focus.” For Alicia Erdman, sales director for Legend Senior Living of Lititz, 80 W. Millport Road, something she enjoys about working in the senior care industry is the “satisfaction of knowing you were able to help a family and they no longer have to worry about their loved one’s overall safety.” Nurses are in high demand to fill various roles within senior care. Retirement communities offer positions for Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs), Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs), Registered Nurses (RNs), and Registered Nursing Assessment Coordinators. A license is required to work as an RN or LPN. A certification is needed to serve as a CNA, but some senior care employers will help staff members obtain the certification. “We (at QPRC) do provide this education as well as pay our staff to get the education,” noted Focht.
Personal care aides and medication technicians are also needed. A certification is required to serve as a med tech, with some employers providing and paying for the necessary training to staff members. “If you are serious, after 90 days (at Heatherwood), we will train and pay for the med tech certification, with the promise of a one-year employee commitment,” noted Miller. Other positions offered in the field of senior care include several roles within dining services for servers, cooks, dishwashers, prep cooks, dietary aides, and managers. Also needed are housekeepers, laundry aides and assistants, maintenance and renovations team members, activities aides, and receptionists. The field of senior care also includes home care professionals, who serve as caregivers, companions, and transportation providers to help seniors continue to live independently in their homes. Full-time, part-time, temporary, and PRN (as needed) employment opportunities are offered in the field of senior care. As facilities care for residents around the clock, employees are

The field of senior care offers employment opportunities for people with a variety of skills and talents. The senior care industry includes many different positions that are vital to ensuring that senior living communities provide the best possible care for residents as they age. Representatives from the industry note that working in the field of senior care can be a rewarding career choice for individuals with a passion for helping the senior population. “One of the many perks (of working in senior care) is having the opportunity to be part of something bigger and having the opportunity each and every day to affect people’s lives in a positive way,” explained Kim Focht, director of human resources at Quarryville Presbyterian Retirement Community (QPRC), 625 Robert Fulton Highway, Quarryville. “Our residents are our primary focus,” noted Kelly Miller, director of sales and marketing at Heatherwood Senior Living Community, 3180 Horseshoe Pike, Honey Brook. “This is their

needed for all shifts. Nursing jobs offer a variety of options and flexibility, allowing for people craft a work schedule that fits with their current season of life and family obligations. No matter which position they are interested in, one key attribute for senior care jobseekers to exhibit is dependability. “We’re looking for someone who is reliable and shares a passion for seniors,” explained Erdman. Other representatives from the senior care industry noted that displaying some longevity on a resume, without a lot of job hopping, is also a plus for those looking to get hired. Focht added that employers also look for individuals who have the ability to work independently and as part of a team. Experience in the industry is preferred, but not required. “Bring a positive, team-like attitude, and we will train you,” noted Miller. “These careers require a desire to make a difference in people’s lives. They are both physically and emotionally demanding, and - at the same time - endlessly rewarding,” said Focht.
