Service dog etiquette Never engage an animal at work BY FRANCINE FULTON
When a youngster or even an adult sees a dog in a retail store or other public location, his or her first instinct is usually to approach the animal and pet it. However, that dog may be a working service animal, so people should not touch it or talk to it. “A general rule of thumb is not
to engage with a service animal,” said Christina Billy, director of client services for Canine Partners for Life (CPL), a nonprofit organization that provides service dogs for individuals who have physical and cognitive disabilities. “Some people don’t mind having a conversation with people about their animal, but it is important to address See Service dog pg 5

For those struggling with the death of a loved one, GriefShare can help. GriefShare is a free in-person support group program for anyone who is grieving the loss of a spouse, parent, child of any age, friend, sibling, co-worker or relative. Locally, the program is offered on Tuesdays at 6:30 p.m. at Gateway Church, 160 Cowan Road, Parkesburg, and it is facilitated by
Paul and Twila Ranck. Meetings began on Jan. 16 and will run through April 9. People can attend GriefShare at any time because each meeting is self-contained. At each of the GriefShare sessions, which are designed for people age 15 and older, attendees watch a 30-minute video on a grief-related topic that features real-life stories of people who have experienced loss. “ We watch the video, and each video is on a certain topic, but they are all related to grief See GriefShare pg 2

embers of Chester County 4-H recently joined the Philadelphia Chapter of the American Sewing Guild (ASG) for a Community Service Day of Sewing, during which participants made pillowcases for hospitalized children. The Day of Sewing was held simultaneously at three locations, including in west Philadelphia and at St. James Lutheran Church in Pottstown. The local event took place at the Chester County 4-H Penn State Extension office, located in the Chester County Government Services Center in West Chester. From 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Jan. 6, 4-H members and club leaders were invited to join guild members in making pillowcases, which will be distributed through the Ryan’s Case For Smiles organization. “The group finished 85 pillowcases on (Jan. 6) and will have over 100 total completed by the end of the week,” reported Toni Stuetz,
Extension educator. To prepare for the Day of Sewing, ASG club members created precut pieces of fabric. During the event, attendees had to form pillowcase cuffs and then sew the pieces together. “ You want it to be sturdy, so we finish the seams on the side and the bottom, so they don’t fray,” explained ASG member Barb Leech, adding that the pillowcases were created in fun fabrics designed for children and donated by club members. Those interested in making pillowcases for the charity may visit www.caseforsmiles.org for instructions. “The charity (formerly known as ConKerr Cancer) was started by a woman whose son passed away from cancer. It has gone through several name changes, but they are still doing the same thing,” Leech explained. The ASG is a national nonprofit organization that has a mission to “advance sewing as an art and a life skill.” Group members also use their sewing skills to

nology have enabled group members to continue communication after the meetings if they choose. “The neat thing is that the group among itself get each other’s phone numbers and text message back and forth. That is great to see happen,” Paul said. “This last group that we had formed a text group and they asked us to join in. We had a caring group there.” He added that some support group members will also meet outside of the meetings. “They go for lunch or dinner. We have been invited to some of (those gatherings),” said Paul. The topic for the meeting on Jan. 23 will be “Your Grief Journey.” In this session attendees will learn what to expect along the journey of grief. The program also emphasizes that everyone’s grief journey is different and suggests that people not compare their grief experiences with those of others. Future topics will include “Loneliness and Sadness” on Jan. 30,

and experiences people go through,” Paul explained. “Then we have a time where we gather around and share together mostly about what is in the video. Or (we ask attendees), ‘How is life going?’or‘What are you facing and how can we help?’” All participants are provided with a free workbook, which corresponds to the video. “The workbook has an outline of the video where people can write notes,” Paul said. “Some people go back after the session and go through it. There is also a daily devotional that you can go through until the next week comes around. There is lot of helpful information in the workbook.” People are welcome to repeat the sessions. “We often have people that repeat the 13-week session, or they will come back for one they might have missed or want to refresh a certain video that may want to hear again,” said Paul. “We’ve had some who have attended at least three sessions. It depends who you are and what you are going through.” Paul noted that people go through various stages in grief as time passes, which is another reason to repeat the GriefShare program. “What you hear this time might be different from the next time because you are in a different stage,” Paul said. “Sometimes the fog is so thick you can’t hear anything the first time or you don’t get much (out of a specific session) the first time you attend.” The Rancks have been facilitating GriefShare sessions since 2002, and they have seen how changes in tech-

My thought is to use my life’s journey to illustrate the life of obedience which includes moments of victory, moments of defeat, moments of loss, and moments of joy. Doug Myer began his management career with WDAC Radio Company in 1999 and currently oversees all operations. Reading is a popular pastime, and self-proclaimed book nerds and those who look forward to the next book club gathering can rejoice knowing that a good story isn’t the only benefit associated with this activity. In fact, there are numerous health benefits to cracking a book. For one thing, reading slows cognitive decline. Natural aging results in a decline in memory and brain function over time, but according to research published in the journal Neurology, reading may help slow that process and keep minds sharp. Reading also improves concentration and focus. Technology draws a lot of attention, and those fast processing times and almost instant gratification can shorten attention spans. Reading requires undivided attention and focus, which can improve one’s ability to concentrate. Those who are looking for a sense of accomplishment may read anything from a newspaper article to a novel. Finishing this task, helps people check off measurable goals, and the mental boost they receive may enhance their mood.
Additionally, as long as a person borrows books from a library or a friend, reading is free. It’s possible to educate oneself, travel to far-off lands or even solve mysteries without making a major financial investment. Reading also has the power to enhance literacy and intelligence, as frequent reading introduces the reader to new vocabulary and information. Also, a study of 1,890 identical twins in the United Kingdom found that the twins who had early reading skills seemingly had more positive results for higher intelligence later in life. Relaxation is also a common benefit of reading. A 2009 study by Sussex University researchers showed that reading may reduce stress by as much as 68%. Furthermore, if people read paper books rather than e-books before bedtime, this activity takes a person away from screens. Screens can contribute to losing 20 minutes of sleep on average, according to research published in Pediatrics. There are many reasons to curl up with a good book, as reading is beneficial to both mind and body.
Maintaining physical and mental health requires a multi-faceted approach. Eating well, exercising and reducing stress are part of a healthy regimen, but those are not the only components of a healthy lifestyle. Hobbies can have a positive effect on overall health. Hobbies can seem like ways to simply pass the time or alleviate boredom, but in fact, they can be very beneficial to one’s health. According to a study published in Aging Clinical and Experimental Research, participation in leisure activities positively influences self-perceived well-being and depressive symptoms. Participation in activities that bring out one’s creative side can lead to an increased sense of well-being that is good for long-term health. It also can reduce levels of cortisol, which is known as the stress hormone and can negatively affect energy, mood and sleep. While most leisure activities regularly engaged in can have positive effects on health, those that focus on a combination of physical and mental stimulation are most beneficial. People looking to change their daily routines may want to focus on these health-boosting hobbies. - Dancing: Laugh, sweat and learn some footwork in a dance class. It can make exercise fun for those who find traditional exercise does not
keep their attention. - Kayaking: There’s something serene about being on the water away from the hustle of life on land. Kayaking strengthens the body, but the calm of taking in the water and scenery nourishes the mind. Experts agree that outdoor hobbies add another benefit since sunlight helps the body release chemicals that trigger more positive thoughts. - Gardening: Gardening is physical, requires planning, involves spending time outdoors, and yields tangible results through thriving plants. These are all factors that promote good health. - Fostering animals: Fostering animals offers the animals an opportunity to spend time in domestic settings before being adopted by permanent owners. For the person fostering the animals, having a dog involves going out on walks and play sessions in the backyard. A sense of purpose comes from helping out animals in need, and this hobby also taps into physical wellness. - Volunteering: Being a presence in one’s community can foster social engagement and boost emotional health. It also can keep a person physically active. Various hobbies can be good for the mind and body, which makes it worth anyone’s effort to make more time for recreation and leisure.

Athletes train hard with a goal of performing at their peak when competition begins. Exercise is beneficial for the body, but at times athletes may be in jeopardy of overdoing it in pursuit of doing their best. Johns Hopkins Medicine says many sports injuries can be prevented with proper precautions. To begin with, athletes should wear the right gear. Using the right equipment or gear and wearing supportive shoes can help prevent injury, as can using safety items like helmets and protective pads. Athletes should ensure that all equipment is properly fitted and replace items if they become damaged or worn out. Maintaining flexibility and strength is also important. The experts at the Mount Sinai health organization say it is extremely important to perform dynamic stretches before starting a physical activity, as cold muscles are more vulnerable to injury. Also, exercises that strengthen the muscles used for the sport are beneficial, particularly those that target the core. Core-strengthening exercises
improve balance and stability, which is essential in all sports. Athletes should learn the proper techniques for playing a sport or engaging in a physical activity like strength training. Poor form on the field or in the gym can put athletes at risk for injury, says the University of Rochester Medical Center. Listening to one’s body is another key to staying injury-free. Aches and pains in joints or muscles that do not improve in a day or two could be signs that a more serious condition is developing. Do not attempt to power through pain, which may cause serious issues and significant, long-term injuries. UConn Health Orthopedics and Sports Medicine says rest is a critical component of avoiding injury. One to two rest days should be built into the weekly exercise regimen. One option is to make a rest day a recovery day, instead. This choice means engaging in gentle exercise like walking, swimming or yoga. Athletes can reduce their injury risk by following some tried and true techniques.

hand at the Day of Sewing with her daughter, Megan, a 4-H Club member. Joann is also a member of the Materials Girls group. “When Megan was 28 months old, she was in the hospital for 21 days. (Receiving a pillowcase) meant a lot to her,” said Joann. “The kids get to pick their pillowcases out, so it’s super important to them and their well-being.” “I still have some of the pillowcases I got when I was in the hospital,” added Megan, who is now age 11. The pillowcases made during the Day of Sewing will be given to children’s hospitals and facilities with children’s wards, including Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP). “We will deliver them to a collection point like Steve’s Sewing in King of Prussia, and (Ryan’s Case For Smiles) will pick them up,” noted Leech. “American Sewing Guild does charity projects (that are) ongoing,” Leech added. “In the past, we have made pillows for surgical patients; we make items for NICUs like little development hearts that mothers wear next to them and put in the isolettes with the baby, so they get to know their smell; and (we make) cuddle pads to pick up the babies because they are so fragile.” To learn about the ASG Philadelphia chapter, visit www.sewing philadelphia.org or www.facebook .com/ASG.PhiladelphiaChapter. Dogs trained at CPL are matched with clients who have seizures and other physical disorders, including cardiac conditions, diabetes and narcolepsy, as well as those with mobility issues. “The task needs to be directly related to the disability. For example, the individual who has seizures (is paired with) a dog who can alert the person or a dog that can retrieve medication,” Billy said, noting that service dogs are not the same as animals that provide emotional support. “A support animal is not trained to do a task. They are providing emotional support to their owners. They do not have public access like other service animals.” CPL also provides therapy dogs that work in the community. “We also place facility dogs as courthouse companions,” said Billy. “They will actually interact with other people and work in a courthouse setting and

the individual and ask for permission.” Dogs trained at CPL, which is accredited through Assistant Dogs International, wear a soft vest or a harness to provide balance and support for mobility clients. “They are always working and always engaged in a task by providing balance and support,” said Billy. “If they get distracted, they can veer off to the side and make the person fall. If they are a medical alert dog, they can miss an episode. It’s never OK to assume you can pet a service animal.” Billy noted that not all dogs that are in the public with their owners are certified service animals. While some dogs may wear a scarf or vest, it is not a requirement. “It can be difficult to tell at times,” she stated. “The Americans With Disabilities Act defines a service animal as (one) that is task trained to provide some sort of service for an individual with a disability.”
work with victims of crime and (we place dogs) in a health care facility to help children relax in stressful situations. Their training is a little bit different.” Billy added that although CPL animals are trained and certified, they still get to engage in normal dog behavior. “One of the things we focus on is our dogs’ well-being. A lot of that comes down to meeting their needs. They need to be dogs at times,” she said. “When they get home, they can take off their equipment, run around and play and have play dates with other dogs, but they can redirect back to their handler. If their person needs help, they will be by their side no matter what they are doing. They have a lot of drive to work with their person.” For more information about Canine Partners for Life, which is located at 334 Faggs Manor Road, Cochranville, visit www.facebook .com/CaninePartnersforLife or www .k94life.org or call 610-869-4902.
