Providing Furniture, Household Goods To People In Need

Veterans, families displaced by natural disasters, people transitioning from homelessness and those who have completed rehabilitation programs are just some of those who have benefited from the services of the Community Warehouse Project (CWP) of Chester County.

Founded in November of 2017 by Chester County resident Glenda Brion, CEO and executive director, CWP is a nonprofit service organization that collects and redistributes donated furniture and other household items to families and individuals who are referred to the agency by local social service organizations.

“Most of our families and veterans have been homeless before they get to us. They work with housing agencies like Housing Authority (of Chester County) or (Chester County) Human Services or Home of the Sparrow. (The housing agencies) help with housing and they bring them to us for the furniture,” Brion explained. “The beauty of this is that all of those agencies were struggling on their own in the past to try and find things for their clients. We take that off of their shoulders.”

CWP stores an assortment of donated furniture and household items in two warehouse spaces donated by EKahn Development Corporation. “When we were doing it initially, people came in and shopped, and they were responsible for taking their own stuff home because we didn’t have anyone to deliver it,” Brion said. “When we stopped having them come in (because of the pandemic), we had to get the furniture to them. (Chester) County supplied some funding for us to pay a mover. We now deliver everything, which is so much better because so many people had a really hard time getting

transportation to pick up the stuff.”

In addition to furniture, recipients receive pots and pans; linens, including towels, curtains, sheets and comforters; silverware; and small appliances like toasters.

According to its 2022 year-end report, CWP served more than 1,100 Chester County residents, which includes 424 households, 74 veterans and 509 children. In addition, 650 beds were distributed in

2022. “We serve an average of six to 10 families a week,” Brion noted.

Brion said that she is pleased by how much CWP has grown. “I didn’t know what to expect, and it has all happened organically. We needed more (furniture), and we were able to get more,” she said. “We have been able to serve any client that comes to us. We have been able to help them with 95% of what they ask for.”

“One of the things that makes me

very proud of what we do here is that not only is (the furniture) going to help people, but we are saving it from the landfill. It is pretty awesome,” she added.

CWP is currently in need of donations, especially microwaves and vacuum cleaners. For donation information, visit www. communitywarehouseproject.com or www.facebook.com/CWPCC or call 484-473-4360.

Chester County 4-H continues to offer clubs for youths that give them a chance to explore their interests.

The next scheduled program is the Windy Hollow 4-H Horse Club, where children and youths ages 8 to 18 will learn facts about horse science and general horse knowledge. The club will meet on the first Saturday of the month beginning in February from 3:30 to 5 p.m. The meetings on Feb. 4, March 4, and April 1 will be held at the Romano 4-H Center, 1841 Horseshoe Pike (Route 322), in Honey Brook. The remaining meetings on May 6, June 3, and July 1 will be held at Line It Up Farm in Coatesville.

“If socioeconomically or where they are located doesn’t lend for (horse) ownership, it a great opportunity for them to have that experience,” said 4-H Extension education Audrey Reith. “We hope that it leads to a lifelong interest.”

The first several club meetings will focus on horse safety guidelines, identifying and locating 30 external parts of the horse and making model horse tack, among other activities. “We will discuss markings and color patterns on a horse,” Reith said. “We will learn about bridles and saddles, and they will make bridles for a model horse.”

In subsequent meetings, Amy Pippin from Line It Up Farm will bring a horse for hands-on activities. Children will learn how to approach the horse, grooming techniques, how to clean a horse’s hooves and how to properly tie, saddle, bridle, unsaddle and unbridle a horse.

Reith said that the Windy Hollow 4-H Club is a longstanding club in the county, but is being revitalized to attract new members. “Amy has been a longtime volunteer, and she is restarting the club with children new to equine programs,” said Reith. “This gives kids an opportunity they may never get.”

Reith noted that each child will be given personalized attention when meeting a live horse. “Every child is gradually introduced to make sure they feel safe and secure,” she said. “When they do meet the horse, it’s their choice to lead it or learn to groom it.”

Another club that is currently meeting at the 4-H Center is the Cloverbuds, a program for children ages 5 to 7. Upcoming meetings will take place from 1 to 3 p.m. on Feb. 4 and Saturdays, Feb. 18 and March 4 and 18.

On Dec. 17, West Chester University (WCU) recognized three individuals who have made a significant impact on the university and its students.

At the 9 a.m. commencement ceremony for students in all colleges within the Graduate School, the university awarded an honorary Doctor of Public Service to West Chester Gary Smith, president and CEO of the Chester County Economic Development Council (CCEDC).

At the 3 p.m. commencement ceremony for students in the College of Education

and Social Work, the College of Arts and Humanities, and the Wells School of Music, WCU president Chris Fiorentino presented individual President’s Medallions to Richard and Jeanette Merion. He noted that it is awarded for outstanding leadership and exceptional service to the university.

Smith earned his Bachelor of Arts in 1974 and his Master of Science in urban and regional planning in 1986,

billion in project financing while nurturing thousands of businesses through their growth cycles and shaping communities through his passion and advocacy for smart economic growth.

At the CCEDC, Smith has pioneered award-winning programs. During his tenure, the CCEDC has created 165,000 new jobs, engaged more than 100,000 individuals in workforce development programs, and helped thousands of businesses establish roots and grow in Chester County. Today, the CCEDC employs 35 economic development professionals.

In addition to his work with the CCEDC, Smith was executive director of the Business and Industry Chamber for Chester County and established the first county-wide Chamber of Commerce for Business and Industry. He also founded and directed the

Southeastern Economic Development Company of Pennsylvania. He has served on local, regional, and national boards.

The Gary W. Smith Entrepreneurial Leadership Endowment has been established to support the operation, mission, and efforts of the Cottrell Entrepreneurship Center in honor of Smith and his past and continued enduring efforts to foster an entrepreneurial spirit in his role with the CCEDC. In addition to operational support, funds will also be used to award at least one minimum $1,000 scholarship annually to a promising student who exemplifies Smith’s entrepreneurial spirit.

Richard and Jeanette’s support is visible throughout the WCU campus, chiefly in the Merion Science Center. The

Merions also named The Bridge, a collaborative space in the new Sciences and Engineering Center and The Commons. It has now been named The Leadership Bridge in honor of future leaders in the sciences and engineering.

The Merions created the Richard and Jeanette Merion Endowed Scholarship, which benefits students majoring in physics, chemistry, biology, and nursing, with preference to those enrolled in WCU’s ROTC program. Richard retired from the U.S. Army as a brigadier general following 32 years in the active military and

reserves. Jeanette is a former U.S. Army staff sergeant and is active with the American Legion. She also volunteers with the West Chester Senior Center and the Chester County Pops Orchestra. Together, they are active with the Marine Corps League, local VFWs, American Legions, and community businesses, and they garner support for the WCU ROTC cadets and student veterans, as well as the USO.

Jeanette and Richard have been previously honored by WCU for their giving. Jeanette is a former member of the advisory board of WCU’s Visiting Artist Series, and she and Richard are former Presidential Gala committee members.

Richard, who earned his bachelor’s degree in science education from West Chester in 1959, is president emeritus of the WCU Alumni Association (WCUAA) and was recognized with the Distinguished Alumni Award in 1995 and the WCUAA Service Award in 2015. While in the military, he earned a master’s degree in public health from the University of Michigan, and he returned to WCU to complete a master’s degree in biology in 1969. In 2009, West Chester University awarded an honorary Doctor of Public Service to Richard and the status of Honorary Alumna to Jeanette.

Roman Appointed To Direct WDB

Jeannette Roman has been named director of Chester County’s Workforce Development Board (WDB) by Commissioners Marian Moskowitz, Josh Maxwell, and Michelle Kichline. Roman has worked for the WDB since 2010, most recently as the acting director.

The Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA), the backbone of WDBs, became law in 2014 with a mission of keeping the nation’s jobs pipeline filled with qualified and diverse workers - all while helping businesses and improving the quality of life for workers. Among the goals of WIOA are to increase access to education, training, and employment, particularly for those with barriers to

employment, and to reduce welfare dependency and increase economic self-sufficiency. Out of the 67 counties in Pennsylvania, Chester County is one of 23 that have WDBs.

Roman was raised in Chester County and now lives in the Coatesville area with her four children.

Rural Development Grants Available

U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Rural Development will accept grant applications for the Distance Learning and Telemedicine (DLT) program to help people in rural and tribal communities access remote education and health care resources. The DLT program helps fund real-time, interactive distance learning and telemedicine services in rural and tribal areas to increase access to education, training, and health care resources that are otherwise limited or unavailable.

For instance, the DLT program gives students the opportunity to participate in classes that may be in places that are too far to access. DLT funds can also help connect rural people virtually to medical professionals without leaving their home.

USDA plans to make $64

million available in fiscal year 2023. Of this amount, $12 million is intended for projects that provide substance use disorder treatment services to people in rural areas.

Eligible applicants include state and local governmental entities, federally recognized tribes, nonprofits, and for-profit businesses. Applications must be submitted electronically through www.grants.gov by Monday, Jan. 30. For additional information, visit www.rd.usda .gov and look under Programs and Services for Telecommunications Programs and then click on Distance Learning and Telemedicine Grants.

USDA is offering priority points to projects that meet certain criteria. These extra points will increase the likelihood of funding. For more information, visit www.rd .usda.gov/priority-points.

Do’s And Don’ts Of Healthy Weight Loss

Maintaining a healthy weight is believed to promote long-term health, while being overweight or obese can be a risk factor for various conditions, including Type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. The World Health Organization reports that the worldwide obesity rate has tripled since 1975. In 2016, more than 1.9 billion adults were overweight. Of these, more than 650 million were obese.

Health issues related to obesity are largely preventable. Losing weight in a healthy manner is essential for safe and lasting results, and individuals aspiring to lose weight may consider the following guidelines on what to do and what not to do.

DO add lean protein

sources to your diet. Healthline indicates the body burns calories when digesting and metabolizing protein, so a high-protein diet can help to shed up to 80 to 100 calories per day. Protein also helps you to feel full, reducing the propensity to overeat.

DON’T get hung up on numbers early on. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention advises that even modest weight loss of 5% to 10% of your total body weight can produce health benefits, such as improvements in blood sugar levels, cholesterol and blood pressure. Start small and gradually build up.

DO eat at least four servings of vegetables and three servings of fruits daily. Pro-

duce contains an abundance of vital nutrients and is often fiber-rich and low in calories, which helps you to feel full.

DON’T overlook the impact of beverages on weight loss. The calories in sugary beverages, including some all-natural fruit juices, can add up quickly. Stick to water, tea or other unsweetened beverages to help with weight loss.

DO get moving more. The Mayo Clinic notes that while it is possible to lose weight without exercise, getting moving can help burn the excess calories you can’t cut through diet alone. Exercise boosts metabolism, benefits mood and strengthens muscles and the cardiovascular system, as well.

DON’T go shopping while hungry. If you do, you may make impulse buys that compromise healthy eating plans.

DO speak with a doctor if you are comparing diet and exercise plans. A health care professional can indicate if a

particular diet or fitness routine is acceptable for your age, goals and current health status.

DON’T forget to track eating. Most healthy diets involve some sort of caloriecounting, whether they actually require you to document your intake or use a formula to attribute “points” or

another measure related to what you eat. Writing or tracking the foods and beverages you consume will provide the most honest assessment of habits that could affect weight loss.

DO include foods you enjoy. Completely restricting access to occasional treats may cause you to

resent healthy eating, which can derail weight loss goals. The principle of moderation can apply to healthy weight loss as long as you account for the more calorie-dense foods. Losing weight in a healthy manner is achievable when you seek guidance and follow some time-tested techniques.

Strategies For Organization

When the new year arrives, many people focus on changes that can be implemented in the months to come. This time of year is a popular one to make resolutions to clean and organize homes and offices.

There are plenty of things that can use a little organizational attention. There’s no ideal way to get organized. Getting organized can be as simple as taking small steps that have lasting impact. Whatever works is a good approach, but the following are six strategies to help individuals clear the clutter.

First, utilize to-do lists. People tend to be less productive when they store all of their tasks in their brains. The first step to getting organized is to remove those plans from the head and put them down on paper or in some other tracking tool. A digital to-do

list manager, for example, enables people to see all their tasks, deadlines, and due dates in one place so they can get things done more efficiently. Consider carrying around a notepad or using the digital notes app on a phone to jot down thoughts and needs as they come up.

Second, it is a good strategy to corral one’s “smalls.” Smalls are keys, phones, chargers, wallets, headphones, and other accessories. When these items are grouped together, they are easier to find and allow one to stay on track. Invest in an attractive organizer and install it by the front door or another high-traffic area. It will cut down on trying to find those smaller items when running errands.

It is important to conquer clutter regularly. It is easy to put off cleaning and

organizing when clutter has gotten out of control. Instead, by cleaning up items on a daily or weekly basis, it is much easier to keep ahead of clutter. Combatting clutter should be treated like a daily job, including sorting mail and tossing unnecessary items, emptying waste pails, dusting the desk, deleting emails, and putting items back where they belong.

Another strategy is to categorize emails. Individuals can utilize the folder creation option from popular email providers to sort messages. Messages that need attention can then be dropped into categories of one’s choosing, such as school, health, and receipts. Then an individual will know which folder to go into when searching for what they need, eliminating the timeconsuming task of scrolling

through a full inbox.

When bringing new items into the home, follow the procedure of giving away or throwing out one item for each new item that is received or purchased. This can help to tame clutter.

“Mise en place” is French for “put in place.” It is used in the kitchen to refer to preparing and setting out all ingredients needed in a recipe. The same concept can be used elsewhere.

Clothing can be laid out on the dresser for the next day at work or school. The foyer of a home can be prepped with items one may need, like an umbrella, shoes, and paperwork. Backpacks can be organized so they are ready for the school day.

Establishment of a to-go bag at work for items that need to be brought home can also save time by keeping things organized.

The Fund For Women And Girls Awards Impact Grants

The Fund for Women and Girls has awarded $20,500 in grants to three nonprofit organizations serving the needs of women and girls throughout Chester County. Recipients include Black Women of Chester County in Action (BWCCA), Orion Communities and The Alliance for Health Equity.

For the fourth year in a row, the fund awarded “Moving Her Forward” Impact Grants; this grantmaking program was established to focus on swift responses to pressing needs in the community. Impact Grants are intended to support systems-level changes and leverage impact through collaborative funding with other foundations/donors. The needs identified in the fund’s 2022 “Blueprint Report: Lighting a Path,” its fourth comprehensive research report on the state of women and girls in Chester

County, are the focus of Impact Grant awards.

BWCCA received $3,000 to conduct its “Baker’s Dozen Listening Tour: Dessert for the Body and Soul,” a series of wellness programs for women of color (WOC) in Chester County.

The series, led by a trained Black therapist and professional baker, will bring WOC together for baking sessions and discussions of mental and physical wellness, gathering data on the needs of WOC in Chester County for future strategic program planning.

The fund awarded $10,000 to Orion Communities, supporting the cost of one 16-week “Gettin’ Ahead in a Just Gettin’ By World” program. The series provides life skills and resiliency training primarily to underserved women, preparing them with language to advocate for themselves in the larger world

and improve their economic and health outcomes. The fund joined with other partners to provide Orion with a total of $22,500 to complete a match challenge to fully fund the program this year.

The Alliance for Health Equity was awarded $7,500 to support the second cohort of its Nonprofit Justice and Equity Institute. Founded in 2021, the institute provides a cohortbased series of seven workshops targeted at the nonprofit sector to self-assess and become socially responsible for unintentional inequitable practices, programs and processes within their organization’s culture. The Alliance for Health Equity will use Cohort 2, comprised of Chester County nonprofit service providers, as a model for developing curricula for implementation beyond Chester County. Since 2020, the fund has

awarded $116,000 in Impact Grants for 21 projects throughout Chester County. More Impact Grants will be awarded throughout the new year as time-sensitive priorities arise. Last year’s recipients included: Community Warehouse Project, Chester County Food Bank, Domestic Violence Center of Chester County and ChesPenn Health Services. Last fiscal year, the fund awarded $239,680 in grants to 30 nonprofit organizations. See a full list of last year’s grantees at www.thefundcc.org.

To date, the fund has directed more than $4 million to 86 nonprofit organizations to strategically address persisting needs, including homelessness, domestic violence and women’s health.

Christmas Tree Disposal Tips

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) recently encouraged people to dispose of their Christmas trees promptly after the holiday season, as Christmas trees are large, combustible items that have the potential to result in serious fires. The longer Christmas trees remain in homes, the longer they present a risk. Fresh Christmas trees, which continue to dry out and become more flammable over time, are involved in a much larger share of reported Christmas tree fires than artificial trees.

To safely dispose of a Christmas tree, NFPA recommends using the local community’s recycling program, if possible. Trees should not be put in the garage or left outside.

NFPA also offered several tips for safely removing lighting and decorations to ensure that they remain in good condition. The gripping area on the plug should be used when unplugging electrical decorations. People should never pull the cord to unplug any device from an electrical outlet, as this can harm the wire and insulation of the cord, increasing the risk for shock or electrical fire. Light strings should be inspected for damage when packing them away, and people should throw out any sets that have loose connections, broken sockets, or cracked or bare wires. Each set of lights should be wrapped and placed in an individual plastic bag or wrapped around a piece of cardboard. Electrical decorations should be stored in a dry place away from children and pets to reduce the risk of damage.

For more information about winter fire safety in the home, visit www.nfpa.org, click on Seasonal Fire Causes under Public Education and select the “Put a Freeze on Winter Fires” campaign.
